WHEN Henry Marsh slid into depression after a failed student love affair, he decided the best way to cure himself was to help others by becoming a hospital porter. The experience inspired him to become one of the world’s most eminent brain surgeons.![]()

Enlarge / Cutting edge at the time, we swear.
Doom (1993): Doom’s success lay not only with its addicting gameplay and technical innovations, such as its introduction of a portable game engine, but also in its innovative digital distribution. Note the prominent “shareware” advertisement on the top front of the game packaging. This groundbreaking game earned a spot in the inaugural class of the World Video Game Hall of Fame.
In the early 1990s, the video game industry was still dominated by that Italian-American plumber named Mario. The gaming giant Nintendo was not just restricting the number of third-party titles that could be released for its NES and SNES consoles, but it was also enforcing a strict moral code for its games. The SNES port of the wildly popular (and gratuitously violent) arcade game Mortal Kombat, for instance, replaced blood with sweat and substituted the game’s notorious fatalities with decidedly less violent “finishing moves.” Many game designers felt suffocated by Nintendo’s sanitized ecosystem and began returning to the wild west of video game development, the personal computer, to create exciting new games that challenged graphical and moral boundaries. Then, in 1993, a space marine blasted his way through hordes of invading demons, blazing a new path for games in the process. id Software’s Doom was a seminal release in video game history, influencing the form, feel, and perception of so many first-person shooters that followed.
Doom’s story begins with id Software, and id Software’s story begins with a company called Softdisk. Softdisk created disk magazines, which were electronic publications distributed on 5.25” floppy disks that provided readers with an interactive experience using graphics, games, music, and puzzles. In the late 1980s, computer programmer John Romero was working at Softdisk, creating games that would be included alongside magazine articles. One such game was Dangerous Dave (1988), which Romero created to accompany an article about the GraBASIC programming language. Dangerous Dave was a simple game heavily inspired by Super Mario Bros. in which players collected gold cups and defeated monsters.

Harvey Weinstein, the ultimate impresario of the Oscars campaign, has again reshaped the Academy Awards — though in a way that he could hardly have anticipated while at the zenith of his power and influence.
The allegations of sexual assault and harassment against Weinstein sparked a #MeToo movement that has removed others touched by the taint of misconduct from Oscar contention this year.
James Franco, whose acclaimed portrayal of Tommy Wiseau in The Disaster Artist, was bypassed for a Best Actor nod — he won at the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards — amid allegations of sexual misconduct and exploitation. Similarly Wiseau, who believed the 2004 cult classic that inspired the film was such a masterpiece that he screened The Room in the window for Oscar consideration, will see his Academy Awards dreams dashed.
SonyKevin Spacey’s performance as John Paul Getty was erased from All the Money in the World after actor Anthony Rapp accused the Academy Award-winning actor of making sexual advances when he was 14 years old. At the time, Spacey said he was “beyond horrified” by Rapp’s account, though some 14 others subsequently have come forward with allegations.
Spacey’s eventual replacement in the role, Christopher Plummer, this morning received a nomination for best supporting actor, making director Ridley Scott, the film’s producers and Sony’s risky and expensive decision to reshoot the film a good one.
Kate Winslet may well have been overlooked for her award-winning performance in Wonder Wheel — perhaps because of its association with director Woody Allen. The Oscar-winning director is facing renewed allegations by daughter Dylan Farrow that he molested her in an attic when she was 7, a charge he has repeatedly denied.
A growing list of actors, most recently Colin Firth, have expressed regret for working with Allen.
Critical darling Wind River was similarly snubbed, despite writer-director Taylor Sheridan’s steps to wrest his film from Weinstein’s control. The Weinstein Company had acquired the film last August, but Sheridan and the producers took it back, refusing to allow the profits from a movie — which deals with sexual violence against women on a tribal reservation — to flow to Weinstein.
Weinstein has repeatedly denied sexual misconduct. He was expelled from the Academy’s membership in October after an emergency meeting.

Choosing the right baby monitor is probably more important and more of a challenge than new parents expect. If you think that most baby monitors are more or less alike, then think again, friend.
My wife and I have been through no fewer than four different monitors so far, and our first child is just a little over four years old at the time of this writing. So think of this article as both a review and a PSA; if I can save you any time and heartache, then my own mild, but frequent frustrations will have been worth it.
At the most basic level, a decent baby monitor has to let you see and hear your little one even when you are not in the room. Most current units can do that, albeit with varying amounts of success. From limited image quality to limited range of view, and from poor sound clarity to limited range between the camera unit and the parent unit, the degree to which a monitor system fulfills its goals can be all over the spectrum, and unfortunately, often price plays a role. The pricier units tend to have better image and sound quality and better range, e.g.
Most people will consider $ 230 rather expensive, and $ 230 happens to be the price of the Netgear Arlo Baby monitoring system. But don’t worry too much, because this system fits within my premise: With that elevated price tag comes elevated quality in the basic realms of image and sound clarity. And a host of extra features also come along for the ride.
But first, those basics.
Image quality? Try 1080p high definition video. That’s the same image quality that was blowing people’s minds just a few years back in $ 1,000-plus TV sets; now it’s available on your baby’s monitor. And you’ll enjoy that image quality via your smartphone, tablet, or computer, because rather than use a dedicated parent unit, the Arlo Baby monitor connects right to your chosen device via an easy-to-use app.
After dark or lights out in the nursery? No problem. The camera has advanced night vision capabilities enhanced by built-in, near-invisible infrared LEDs that won’t disturb a resting child at all but will allow your Arlo Baby camera to see in the darkness. The sound quality is also superb headed your way, as will be your own voice projected out of its built-in speaker as you talk (or sing or coo) to your child.
But hey, lots of modern baby monitors let you use a phone or tablet to monitor the kid, and plenty of them have good video and sound quality. So let’s talk about the extras.
First, don’t discount the value of a monitor that looks more like a charming bunny than a miniature version of Big Brother. (There are also cat kitten and puppy options if you have a preference.)
Kids will welcome having an Arlo Baby close by their crib or bed. And parents will welcome all the data said monitor sends back. This thing can display a room’s temperature and humidity level in real time and can track changes over time. It has a music player option that can soothe a child to sleep. It has optional sound and motion alerts that inform you if your child is crying, moving, or if someone else has entered the room. And perhaps best of all, the Arlo Baby monitor uses a built-in rechargeable battery instead of a wall outlet, so you can move the system around the room, around the house, or around the globe as needed.
And yes, by the way, we do have an Arlo Baby in our house. The struggle was real, but it had a happy ending.

Panda Green Energy Group/Handout via REUTERS
BEIJING/HONG KONG (Reuters) – In a country where you can find everything from chopsticks to slippers designed to look like pandas, one Chinese energy company is going a step further by building 100 solar farms shaped like the bears along the route of the ambitious Belt and Road initiative.
Panda Green Energy Group has already connected one such 50-megawatt (MW) plant to the grid in the northern province of Shanxi, the first step in a public relations stunt that emphasizes the cuddly side of the world’s No.2 economy.
Built with darker crystalline silicon and lighter-colored thin film solar cells, the plant resembles a cartoon giant panda from the air.
“The plant required an investment of 350 million yuan ($ 52 million), and it would require investment of $ 3 billion for 100 such plants,” Panda Green Energy’s Chief Executive Li Yuan told Reuters.
Li did not say where the longer-term investment would come from.
The Hong Kong-based firm is currently in talks with Canada, Australia, Germany and Italy to launch more panda-shaped power stations.
The Belt and Road initiative is a plan to emulate the ancient Silk Road by opening new trade corridors across the globe using roads, power lines, ports and energy pipelines.
A 100-MW panda power plant would be expected to generate 3.2 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy over 25 years, according to the company, capable of supplying power to over 10,000 households annually.
Panda Green Energy is currently constructing its second panda power plant in Shanxi, which accounts for a quarter of China’s coal reserves.
Utilization of one panda solar power plant will save the equivalent of a total 1.06 million tonnes of coal and cut emissions of greenhouse gases by 2.74 million tonnes in 25 years, the company said.
The firm has been investing in and running solar power plants in China’s major solar hubs such as Xinjiang and Qinghai province, as well as some solar projects in Britain.
Shanxi aims to install 12 gigawatts of solar capacity by 2020 versus 1.13 GW installed in 2015.

At their destinations, the teams each erected a huge pyramid of wood and cotton that could be seen from 30 miles away. For 23 days straight, cloud, fog and mist prevented them from measuring a single angle, and they were forced to return to Quito no closer to their goal. The French Geodesic Mission to the Equator left France in 1735 to determine — enfin! — whether the Earth was squeezed at the Equator, as followers of René Descartes believed, or flattened at the poles, as English upstart Isaac Newton maintained.

How? By measuring the length of a degree of latitude at the equator and comparing the result to a measurement already taken in Europe. If a degree at the equator was longer than one in Europe, Newton would be vindicated; shorter and Descartes’ supporters could crack open the Champagne. Akin to an 18th-century U.S.-Soviet space race, the expedition had political connotations aplenty, but the mission was about far more than solving a riddle; it also had military implications. It’s easier to conquer the world, after all, with accurate maps.
[The Frenchmen were] deskbound mathematicians who hadn’t the faintest clue what leadership meant.
Dr. Larrie D. Ferreiro, author and historian
Three French scientists — Pierre Bouguer, Louis Godin and Charles-Marie de La Condamine — were up against it from the moment they set off, according to Dr. Larrie D. Ferreiro in Measure of the Earth: The Enlightenment Expedition That Reshaped Our World. The Frenchmen were “deskbound mathematicians who hadn’t the faintest clue what leadership meant,” he says. Because Quito was under Spanish control, they were accompanied by two experienced but young (19 and 22, initially) Spanish naval officers who, as luck would have it, turned out to be the glue that held the whole thing together.
In a sign of things to come, it took the team 13 months just to reach Quito. After Godin spent a large chunk of the expedition’s funds on a diamond for a prostitute in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti), the French scientists had a huge bust-up at Manta, in modern-day Ecuador. There, La Condamine and Bouguer disembarked and continued on foot … before also splitting up. By the time the three factions arrived, they had burned through almost all of the expedition’s funds. If La Condamine hadn’t bailed out the expedition with his own money, the mission might never have gotten off the ground.
Over the next several years, everything that could go wrong did. They faced huge challenges in making measurements — scientists would have to climb 50 volcanoes and measure 50 angles to complete their calculations — but in Ferreiro’s assessment, the biggest setbacks were “self-inflicted wounds,” not scientific challenges. The gravest faux pas? When the expedition’s surgeon, Jean Seniergues, emboldened by a few too many glasses of aguardiente while in Cuenca in 1739, had the audacity to join his local lover in the very public setting of a bullfight … while she was sitting with her father. The situation escalated rapidly, with weapons drawn, insults hurled and a crowd of irate locals surrounding Seniergues, jabbing him with pikes and lances while shouting “Kill the French foreigners!” A week later, he died from his wounds, but the diplomatic fallout could have been far worse.

In spite of everything, the scientists were indeed able to ascertain that a degree of latitude at the equator measures 68.7 miles — we know they were accurate to within 50 yards, amazingly — confirming Newton’s theory and forever changing the way we see and think about the world. In 1743, the members of the expedition dispersed. Bouguer, who traveled via the Caribbean, was the first to make it back to France; Godin ended up taking a job in Lima, where he played a major role in rebuilding the city after the disastrous earthquake of 1746; and La Condamine returned via the Amazon, in the process penning one of the first scientific accounts of the world’s greatest river.
As well as reshaping the Earth, the expedition did a lot to mold a continent. Bouguer, La Condamine and both Spanish officers wrote books about their experiences, providing Europeans with some of the first observations of South America from a nonmilitary, nonreligious perspective.
Their writings painted a picture of South Americans as a brave and proud people that, ironically, half a century later, “filtered back to South America and acted as one of many catalysts that led to the independence wars that started in 1809,” observes Ferreiro. The great libertador Simón Bolívar even paid homage to two of the explorers in My Vision on Chimborazo. “I strove bravely forward in the footsteps of La Condamine and Humboldt, and nothing could hold me back,” he wrote.

In the viral Atlantic article, “My Family’s Slave,” author Alex Tizon tells his account of Eudocia Tomas Pulido, who was to Tizon’s family both “Lola” and slave. Behind the heart-wrenching storytelling is a reality we must face: the oppressive class structures and culture that brought forth Eudocia’s enslavement and trafficking, and the need to change them in order to address the root of modern day slavery within the Filipino community.
The use of underpaid and overworked katulong, utusan, and kasambahay—the kind of servitude Eudocia was forced to perform—is common practice among many Filipino families. It is an unjust practice that stems from a violent history of colonization and exploitation of the Filipino people. In the Philippines, thousands of Filipinos are brought to the cities, suburbs, and wealthy households in the countryside as domestic help. These domestic helpers are very often young women who must face exploitative conditions. No matter their destination, they are undoubtedly a product of the massive landlessness and joblessness brought about by feudalism in the Philippines.
