It’s one step forward and three steps back for Beth, Ruby and Annie on Good Girls, and in Sunday’s episode, Max certainly doesn’t help their cause. The women are lucky to be alive after Beth’s attempted murder of their mob boss, but to wheel-and-deal him so soon after? That’s one risky play. Let’s see how it all pans out.

As we saw last week, Beth is skimming 10 percent off the top of Rio’s cash. Ruby thinks it’s a dangerous ploy, but Beth is tired of Rio calling the shots. After all, he stole from them first, she reasons. He’s just way scarier and, you know, armed and dangerous.

We check in with Max, who’s going all Beautiful Mind, trying to track the mystery behind Lucy’s disappearance. Dead center on his bulletin board is a note that reads: “Mrs. Boland.” (Though, I’m not sure what asteroids, a satellite launch and a plane crash have to do with it, but he wrote those down, too.) Based on the state of his house, the destroyed look on his face and the handgun he now possesses, it doesn’t look like Max is in a good place.

Stan gets a wad of cash from Krystal for working a private party with her. He’s shocked she’s pulling in that much dough until he witnesses a screaming match she gets into with a rich guy who accuses her of emptying his wife’s jewelry box.  Shady, indeed, but at least she’s sharing the (stolen) profits?

The ladies meet with Max to clear up a few things, but he’s got his gun inside a paper bag, demanding to know where Lucy is. Beth tells him about Rio and the van. “What do we do about this guy?” he asks, but of course, the women don’t have an answer. Max doesn’t want to go to the cops; he wants to kill him. “I’ve got nothing left to lose,” he says. Poor guy. Max then mentions a cousin who’s a former Navy SEAL and can do the job for $ 30k. Uh, I guess it’s nice to have options?

At the next cash hand-off, Rio tells the women he feels they’re robbing him blind. Beth plays it cool, but Rio is adamant: He doesn’t trust his partners. How much longer can Beth get away with this?

Good Girls Season 3 AnnieThe trio then goes to see JT at the loan office. Annie spills that the money’s for a hit man hire, which ruins their chances of getting the advance. Annie then suggests they rob her convenience store, but Beth and Ruby want no part of it. JT, however, is intrigued by how easy she says it would be (“Lionel Richie-easy!”), so he’s all in.

The job takes longer than it’s supposed to, and when Beth and Ruby go inside to investigate, another man is holding JT at gunpoint. He asks the women to call the cops, but after Beth claims to have no service, JT takes off running and the man accidentally shoots Ruby in the knee. Annie wraps up the leg with a tourniquet, sponges, ice scrapers, and other convenience store odds and ends. It looks super janky, as if the leg is wrapped in literal garbage and cellophane, but according to a paramedic, Annie saved the leg and maybe even Ruby’s life. And you know what? Annie really needed a win!

Ruby and the women then go to Plan B: They decide to let “tampon boy” take his shot at Rio, but the kid can barely hold his gun, let alone fire it. Beth takes him to school, and after a bit of practice, Max gets in touch with his inner Rambo, dainty earmuffs and all.

Beth introduces Max to Rio as “her ink guy,” but all of that John Nash/Sylvester Stallone realness goes up in smoke. Instead, he apologizes for raising his (non-existent) ink prices, screwing Beth over in the process. Even after she eggs him on, Max can’t muster up the chutzpah. “It wouldn’t have made you feel better,” she tells him afterward. “It just makes you feel nothing.”

Stan decides he’s in on Krystal’s game. He delivers a plan for how they’ll dupe rich, horny guys out of their most prized possessions. Looks like Stan is baking a few “egg rolls” of his own…

When the Boland family returns home later that night, they find that every single item in their house has been hijacked. On the counter is a note for “Elizabeth.” It reads: “Don’t ever steal from me again.”

Will the ladies ever get a leg up on Rio? And am I the only one who wants to see more of JT? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!

Crowdfunding is big business for healthcare. GoFundMe alone has raised more than $ 5 billion in the last eight years, with one out of every three campaigns raising money to cover healthcare costs, according to GoFundMe’s CEO. Often, these campaigns are for the uninsured or underinsured, and help provide legitimate medical care. But other times, people are raising funds to pay for questionable treatments, according to a brief report in JAMA today.

Brain injury specialist Ford Vox and a team of three medical ethicists searched GoFundMe and three lesser-used crowdfunding sites (YouCaring, CrowdRise, and FundRazr) for campaigns involving questionable treatments: those that don’t do much at all, and others that do something potentially dangerous.

They focused on five treatments that were showing up a lot in their results, searching the sites systematically for US- and Canada-based campaigns from the last three years that were specifically for those five. They found 1,059 campaigns that fit the bill, with the collective goal of raising more than $ 27 million, and hitting about a quarter of that target.

“The most unethical sham”: Lindsey Graham rails at Kavanaugh FBI probe demands (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/the-most-unethical-sham-lindsey-graham-rails-at-kavanaugh-fbi-probe-demands-video/ https://briefnews.eu/the-most-unethical-sham-lindsey-graham-rails-at-kavanaugh-fbi-probe-demands-video/#respond Fri, 28 Sep 2018 00:48:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-most-unethical-sham-lindsey-graham-rails-at-kavanaugh-fbi-probe-demands-video/ SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh snubbed the question whether he would want the FBI to conduct an investigation into the sexual misconduct allegations against him. His most fiery defense came from Lindsey Graham.

Kavanaugh has faced a tough grilling by Sen. Richard J. Durbin (D-Illinois) on whether he would personally favor an FBI probe into the allegations of sexual misconduct put forward by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, who testified before him, and others.

Referring to Kavanaugh’s opening statement that he would welcome any kind of investigation, Durbin suggested the judge should ask the White House counsel Donald McGahn to “suspend the hearing until the FBI completes the investigation.” That, according to Durbin, would allow to “finally put to rest these charges if they are false or approve them if they are not,” and is “the only way to answer some of these question.”

Before Kavanaugh had time to respond to Durbin’s suggestion, however, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley interjected, reminding Durbin that it was the committee that was in charge of running the hearing and “not the White House, not Don McGahn, not even you as a nominee,” referring to Kavanaugh.

Kavanaugh, who showed a faint smile during the chairman’s rebuke, refused to directly answer the question, reiterating that he is innocent and welcomes “whatever the committee wants to do because I’m telling the truth.” When pressed, he said it was a “phony” question to ask whether he personally saw the FBI probe necessary.

“They don’t reach conclusions, you reach conclusions,” Kavanaugh said, adding that what the FBI would essentially do was “ask question and type out the report.”

Durbin, apparently unsatisfied with the answer, proceeded to demand a definite “yes” or “no” response from Kavanaugh. Later throughout the hearing, several more Democrats would do the same, but Kavanaugh wouldn’t answer.

Then came a thunderous rebuke by Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina), who scolded Democrats for “the most unethical sham” since he has been in politics.

“If you wanted an FBI investigation, you could have come to us! What you want to do is destroy this guy’s life, hold this seat and hope you win in 2020.”

He specifically refereed to the statement by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who said back in July that he would “fight this nomination with everything I’ve got.”

“If you really wanted to know the truth, you sure as hell wouldn’t have done what you have done to this guy,” Graham said, arguing that Ford has been “as much a victim” as Kavanaugh.

The bickering over the prospect of an FBI probe comes a day after US President Donald Trump said that he would not order one as “there was nothing to investigate.”

“They didn’t know location, year. They didn’t know anything,” Trump said at his Wednesday press conference, adding that the results of the probe, whatever they might turn out to be, were “not going to change the Democrats’ minds.”

“They destroyed a man’s reputation and they want to do more,” he said.

EastEnders spoilers: Max and Rainie’s sham marriage EXPOSED in shock Vincent Hubbard twist https://briefnews.eu/eastenders-spoilers-max-and-rainies-sham-marriage-exposed-in-shock-vincent-hubbard-twist/ https://briefnews.eu/eastenders-spoilers-max-and-rainies-sham-marriage-exposed-in-shock-vincent-hubbard-twist/#respond Sun, 29 Apr 2018 01:01:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/eastenders-spoilers-max-and-rainies-sham-marriage-exposed-in-shock-vincent-hubbard-twist/

While many viewers believed he had finally managed to move on from his split with Tanya (played by Jo Joyner) and the death of his daughter Abi (Lorna Fitzgerald), there was much more than met the eye.

In the latest episode, it appeared that the pair were looking to take Abi’s baby home after it transpired the baby had been placed in care.

The pair seemed as though they were keen to set up their own family together with the orphan.

However, after a meeting with a social worker, Rainie (Tanya Franks) was caught out by Jack Branning (Scott Maslen).

He came in unannounced at the end of the discussion, unaware Max (Jake Wood) and Rainie were pretending his house was their own.

Jack was furious but waited for the social worker to leave before raging at Rainie.

He snapped: “I don’t want you anywhere near Abi.”

In new spoiler photos released ahead of this week’s programme, Max and Rainie seem to be hitting the rocks.

The cracks are starting to appear in their sham marriage, especially with the added pressure of them sleeping rough in Maximum Motors.

Fed up of being homeless, Rainie pinches the keys for the Hubbard’s so they can sneakily move in.

But how long will they go unnoticed for?

Vincent (Richard Blackwood) was last seen being bundled into one of villain Aidan Maguire’s (Patrick Bergin) cars.

After a short drive, one of the henchmen held a gun to his head.

The show ended without revealing if the weapon was fired or not – so Vincent could still be alive and also be the one to find Max and Rainie in his home.

It comes as actor Jake revealed Max’s storyline is heading in a new direction.

Speaking to the Sun at the BT Sport Industry Awards 2018, he said: “He’s just got married so there’s a little bit of lightness.

“There’ll be twists and turns long the way.”

He added: “They’ve given Max a different storyline going in a different direction in the next six to eight months.

“It’s brilliant what they’ve come up with and I’m just having great fun doing it.”

  • The fact that he disagrees with Trump’s trade agenda and is still willing to join makes him the perfect candidate.
  • Kudlow won’t be able to dissuade Trump from doing what he wants, but Kudlow will get what he wants either way. He’ll be relevant again.

Larry Kudlow will join the White House to serve as an economic adviser to the  Trump administration, and based on his career and Trump’s personality, there couldn’t be a better pick.

Last month, the drug company Allergan made news for a deal in which it gave six of its patents to a Native American tribe in order to avoid a patent review process called inter partes review, or IPR.

The six patents protect the blockbuster drug Restasis, a treatment for dry eyes which earns $ 1.5 billion in annual revenue. Generic drug companies have challenged the Restasis patents, through both IPRs and federal court litigation. Allergan agreed to pay the St. Regis Mohawk tribe $ 15 million annually as long as the patents are alive, because the company believes that the tribe will be immune to IPR under a legal principle known as sovereign immunity.

Allergan’s tactic has come under fire from the tech sector, from Congress, and perhaps soon, from a federal judge.

What a sham! Jaffa Cakes SHRINK as shameless McVities reduces size of packet from 12 to 10 https://briefnews.eu/what-a-sham-jaffa-cakes-shrink-as-shameless-mcvities-reduces-size-of-packet-from-12-to-10/ https://briefnews.eu/what-a-sham-jaffa-cakes-shrink-as-shameless-mcvities-reduces-size-of-packet-from-12-to-10/#respond Wed, 27 Sep 2017 08:00:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/what-a-sham-jaffa-cakes-shrink-as-shameless-mcvities-reduces-size-of-packet-from-12-to-10/

The new smaller packs weigh 122 grams rather than 150 grams as before.

McVities, the makers of the snacks, have cut the recommended retail price from £1.15 to 99p to reflect the changed size.

Twin packs, which now have 20 cakes rather than 24, are now £1.89 rather than £2.19.

This is unlike other companies who have also slashed the size of their food but declined to change the price.

McVities, which is owned by Turkish group Pladis, said in a statement: “These changes represent the same price per cake, however, pricing ultimately remains at the sole discretion of retailers.

“There is no change in the size, shape or weight of individual cakes in the McVitie’s Jaffa Cake range.”

It is not clear why, if price is not the driver of this decision, McVitie’s have reduced the size of Jaffa Cakes.

But for whatever reason, they are just the latest in a long line of producers to slash sizes.

The Office for National Statistics revealed in July as many as 2,529 products had shrunk in size over the past five years, but were being sold for the same price.

Everything from confectionary to orange juice and even toilet roll had shrunk.

Consumers reacted angrily to the Jaffa Cakes news this morning, sharing their feelings on Twitter.

One wrote: “The news of @McVities making the packs of Jaffa cakes smaller has ruined my day; whoever made this decision should be ashamed #jaffascam”.

Another fumed: “It takes a lot to outrage me, but just read that @McVities have skunk a packet of Jaffa Cakes from 12 to 10 for same price!#jaffacakegate”.

Many compared the reduction in size to the shrinking of Toblerone late last year.

The iconic chocolate bar is distinctive in its peaking pyramid-like shapes filled with chunks of nougat.

But makers Mondelez International decided in November 2016 to widen the gap between the triangular pieces, thereby narrowing the amount of chocolate.

Trump’s bid for public input on national monuments may be a sham https://briefnews.eu/trumps-bid-for-public-input-on-national-monuments-may-be-a-sham/ https://briefnews.eu/trumps-bid-for-public-input-on-national-monuments-may-be-a-sham/#respond Tue, 23 May 2017 07:38:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trumps-bid-for-public-input-on-national-monuments-may-be-a-sham/ Bears Ears National MonumentBureau of Land Management/Flickr

In late April, field biologist Stanley Smith was catching up on emails at his desk in the College of Sciences at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, when he noticed a shocking note.

It came from the Bureau of Land Management, an agency within the Department of the Interior, and informed Smith that the public lands advisory council in southern Nevada that he’s served on for years was suspended. Across the country, other regional advisors got similar notices.

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke had called for a review of more than 200 independent groups that advise his department on various issues, such as whether a historical site or natural feature should be designated a national monument.

The day before Smith received his notification, President Trump signed an executive order asking the Interior to review 21 sites recently designated as national monuments.

The review would cover patches of wilderness that received the distinction after 1996, like Mojave Trails in California and Bears Ears in Utah, and would assess whether public opinion was adequately taken into account prior to elevating their status.

The monument order itself was controversial. But the months-long suspension of the advisory groups means that while Zinke’s team is reconsidering the bounds — and even existence — of some national monuments, the teams specifically set up to provide local input will be out of commission.

Called Resource Advisory Councils (RACs), the groups consist of representatives from varied backgrounds, such as oil and gas, ranching, tribal government, and academia.

Mike Quigley, an Arizona RAC member who works for a conservation group, said suspending the advisory councils now “calls into question the administration’s sincerity in seeking public input.”

Cascade-Siskiyou National MonumentBureau of Land Management Oregon and Washington/Flickr

Sandra Zellmer, a law professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln who specializes in public lands, is more blunt. She says the administration clearly “wants to talk more about economics and energy development and production than about sustainability.”

To wit, Zinke has said he’d consider expanding oil and gas exploration, as well as uranium mining, on federal lands. However, a recent report from a group of legal scholars suggests any attempt by Trump to alter a national monument designation will face court challenges — as only Congress has the power to make such a change.

President Clinton and his Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt created Resource Advisory Councils in their current form in 1995. According to Zellmer, the move signaled a recognition of the importance of public input in making land-management decisions.

Consisting of 10 to 15 members, the councils meet several times a year to discuss activities affecting public lands, like recreation, conservation, and energy exploration. Some RACs are specifically set up to advise on temporary projects, like the creation of a national monument.

Each council has seats reserved for representatives who can advocate for everything from history to energy to grazing. For those involved, the RACs represent a rare space where interests like industry and conservation sit down together to work on recommendations. According to members, that leads to a wide array of views about how public lands should be managed.

“The process requires an openness to people’s ideas,” says Bob Schneider, the cofounder of a conservation organization and a member of the Central California RAC. “It’s a body with a lot of mutual respect for people’s concerns and people’s values. You don’t get to find that so often in government.”

Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monumentblmcalifornia/Flickr

In 2015, Barack Obama named northern California’s Berryessa Snow Mountain, known for the diverse array of species it hosts, a national monument. Schneider, who advised on that declaration, says the decision-making process engaged anglers, businesses, mountain bikers, farmers, and other parties.

And that sort of broad consensus is exactly what the Interior says it seeks.

“In the case of significant public land use, we feel the public — the people that those monuments affect — should be considered,” said Zinke in a briefing previewing Trump’s executive order.

Bobby McEnaney, who works for the Natural Resources Defense Council on renewable energy in the West, says the Trump administration is sending mixed signals with the simultaneous reviews of national monument designations and the RACs.

“They say they really value that locals know best,” McEnaney says. “But the one formal apparatus that’s designed to specifically solicit local input on an institutional level is the one they’re deciding to suspend right now.”

Without another option, some RAC members are contemplating submitting input on national monuments currently under review — such as the hotly debated Bears Ears, an area near a uranium mine that’s sacred to multiple Native American tribes — through the public comment process. (The window to comment on Bears Ears ends this Friday, while input can be given on other sites under consideration until early July.) But members say that process elicits a flood of responses compared to what one RAC members calls the “meaningful and efficient” recommendations proffered by the councils.

“The RACs are an imperfect product by far, but so is democracy,” McEnaney says. “It’s a democratic process. It involves a lot of different interests.”

A psychologist explains why self-esteem is a ‘sham’ https://briefnews.eu/a-psychologist-explains-why-self-esteem-is-a-sham/ https://briefnews.eu/a-psychologist-explains-why-self-esteem-is-a-sham/#respond Thu, 11 May 2017 22:04:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-psychologist-explains-why-self-esteem-is-a-sham/ A couple takes a selfie on the glass sightseeing platform on Shilin Gorge in Beijing, China, May 27,Kim Kyung-Hoon/Reuters

In her new book, “Insight,” psychologist Tasha Eurich argues that most of us don’t see ourselves accurately, and explains why that’s a big problem.

Perhaps the biggest bombshell she drops along the way is this: Self-esteem doesn’t necessarily make you more successful. In fact, thinking highly of yourself — despite having obvious character flaws — can hurt your chances of personal and professional success.

This is hardly a new idea. Eurich cites a growing body of research on the potential perils of self-esteem, including a paper published by Roy Baumeister and his colleagues more than two decades ago.

Unfortunately, it’s taking a while for these scientific findings to seep into public consciousness.

“Most of us who have been born between 1950 and now have grown up in a world where self-esteem is a prized and valued quality,” Eurich said when she visited the Business Insider office in May.

But research suggests a different story.

A 2003 review of more than 15,000 studies, published by Baumeister and his colleagues, found that students with higher self-esteem don’t perform better in school, and professionals with higher self-esteem don’t have stronger relationships with their coworkers. Even military cadets with higher self-esteem don’t turn out to be more effective leaders.

In fact, the 2003 review found that self-esteem was linked to some destructive behaviors, including violence and aggression, cheating, and drug use.

In the book, Eurich shares a hypothesis about why we’re still obsessed with “the sham that is self-esteem”: “It’s far easier to feel wonderful and special than to become wonderful and special.”

Eurich told us that there’s a different — and more productive — way to look at self-esteem. Instead of seeing it as a cause of success, we can see it as a “result of excellent performance.”

Eurich told us: “Instead of puffing yourself up and saying you’re great and you’re perfect and that should help you be successful, what’s even better is to work hard to be successful, to see those improvements and those successes, and to use that as a way to drive you positively in the future.”

Or, as Baumeister and his co-authors put it in the 2003 review, “Using self-esteem as a reward rather than an entitlement seems most appropriate to us.”

In other words, the alternative to building yourself up isn’t tearing yourself down. Eurich told us:

“Another way I like to think about this self-esteem idea is instead thinking about self-acceptance. What self-acceptance means is I see myself clearly: I see the good, I see the bad, and I might even see the ugly.

“But in spite of that knowledge, I appreciate who I am, I know that I’m in charge and in control of what I want to work on. And I like the person that I am.”

It might seem like semantics, but that re-framing is crucial. As Eurich told us, it’s a “very small change that can have a big impact.”
