Sunday’s 44th annual People’s Choice Awards gave viewers what they wanted (what they really, really wanted). And we’re not just talking about the Shadowhunters fandom, whose frustration over their favorite show’s untimely cancellation has never been more validated.

Though the annual viewer-voted ceremony is often a mixed bag, this year’s installment — the first to be broadcast on E! — moved things right along with surprisingly memorable wins, wonderfully awkward encounters and, thanks to Female Artist of 2018 Nicki Minaj, one highly tweet-able sexual advance. (Two if you count her follow-up mention of Kim Kardashian’s butt.)

From the show’s cheeky beginning — in which a tuxedo-clad Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly claimed that the PCA stage was designed by the architects of the Louvre — to that final stirring speech from lawyer Bryan Stevenson (“More hope, more mercy and more justice!”), it was truly an evening of highs. Plus, on what other award show could you watch Taran Killam act visibly confused while Katherine McNamara speaks directly to her “angels” in the Shadowhunters community?

Warning: This article contains spoilers of a most sexy nature from Monday’s Shadowhunters. If you haven’t watched, return from whence you came.

The final minutes of Monday’s Shadowhunters introduced a curious new pairing — and we have a feeling you might have some feelings about their feelings. You feel?

Jace and Maia, having spent most of the hour at each other’s throats as they clashed over the Inquisitor’s new arrest-innocent-Downworlders policy, ended the hour at each other’s… well, it’s not clear how far they went, but if you’re willing to start undressing in the middle of a back alley, there’s a good chance you’re willing to do a lot more.

So, let’s talk: How do we feel about this naughty turn of events? My gut tells me that Maia and Jace are just sort of “helping” each other while they wait for the true objects of their affection — aka Simon and Clary, respectively — to become available. But is any relationship ever that simple on this show? Did Maia really mean it when she told Jace that their encounter doesn’t mean anything, or was she also lying to herself?

And if they are just helping each other out through times of loneliness, how do we think Clary and Simon will feel about that? I’m genuinely unsure how I should be processing this, so please drop a comment with your take below.

* Jace was appointed the new head of the New York Institute, a title he almost immediately passed along to Alec.

* A bottle of whisky and a night of reminiscing with Dot nearly led Magnus into temptation, but he was delivered from cheating by his feelings for Alec: “I’ve always been a one-soul-at-a-time kind of guy.” (In other news, can we get a flashback from Magnus’ sexy times with Freddie Mercury?!)

* Simon’s daylighting ability has turned him into something of a vampire rockstar; he’s not into the idea of being a leader, but he doesn’t mind the affect its having on attendance at his concerts.

Harry Shum Jr. was never considered for the role of Valentine on Shadowhunters, but Monday’s episode (Freeform, 8/7c) does make for a pretty solid audition tape.

Following last week‘s 11th-hour switcheroo, Magnus and Valentine are now inhabiting each other’s bodies, creating a multi-layer challenge for the characters — as well as the actors.

“He’s a hard one to crack,” Shum tells TVLine of Valentine’s portrayer Alan Van Sprang. “He has a lot of nuances, all these little movements and smiles. I just tried to capture that without being too blatant or hokey about it, since [Valentine] is trying to hide those characteristics, trying to fool people as much as he can.”

Of course, there’s one thing Azazel didn’t consider when putting Valentine in Magnus’ body: “Valentine doesn’t really know Magnus that well, other than him being a ‘filthy warlock,’ as he says,” explains Shum. “He knows he’s a little flamboyant, but he doesn’t know much about his personal life,” including that Alec is his boyfriend. As Shum points out, it’s much harder to fool “someone he’s been intimate with.”

Despite being kept apart for most of the hour — “Valentine” remains in Shadowhunter custody, while “Magnus” roams freely about the city — the two do share a scene together, which Shum calls “really fun” for a number of reasons.

“I’ve never really gotten to act with [Van Sprang] before, so to do it this way for the first time — playing each other — made it even more interesting,” Shum says. “He’s such a great actor, and it was so cool to see what he did with it, seeing how he lifted those little hand movements and other things I’ve contributed to the character.”

And although it’ll probably end up on the cutting room floor, Shum is really hoping that his ad-libbed line at least makes it to the Season 2 blooper reel: “We looked at each other in this very serious moment, and I told him, ‘Magnus, you’ve never looked better.’”

While filming Monday’s Shadowhunters finale (Freeform, 8/7c), star Katherine McNamara says she remembers turning to the directors and asking, “How are we going to shoot this in eight days?”

“The finale is insane,” she tells TVLine. “Valentine has kidnapped Simon, and Clary’s first instinct is to rescue him — but that would be playing right into Valentine’s plan, since Clary is the key to activating the Soul Sword and killing all of the Downworlders. And just to make this even worse, the Downworlders are all trying to kill Clary, so just getting to Simon will be a difficult task.”

Speaking of Simon, McNamara says she’s fully aware of the show’s current ‘shipping climate, though she urges naysayers to enjoy Clary and Simon’s relationship as part of her character’s overall story.

“These characters all have such long journeys ahead of them,” she reminds us. “There’s so much content from the books, plus new things the writers are adding in. It’s more about the journey. We can’t just jump straight to the relationships that people want to see. Clary and Simon are both at a point where they’re fortified in the shadow world, and they’ve grown so much in doing that. They’ve gained confidence in their powers and in themselves, so they’re able to see each other in a different light for the first time.”

As for the level of ass kicking in the finale, even though Clary has “become a lot more careful since losing her mother,” McNamara still promises an action-packed hour.

“She doesn’t want to put anyone at risk if she doesn’t have to, but now that she’s Valentine’s weapon, she has a responsibility to more people than just herself,” McNamara explains. “It’s great to finally see Clary and Jace working as a team again, along with Alec and Izzy. They’re back to being that Shadowhunter squad, if you will.”

McNamara also promises an “intense … emotional, gut-wrenching” cliffhanger to leave fans guessing until the show returns for Season 2B: “What, did you think we were going to tie things up in a nice little bow?”
