Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis continues to praise his own politicking after flying dozens of migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard last week, but immigration experts say the stunt was dehumanizing to the migrants at the center of the controversy and minimized the oft-harrowing journeys endured by asylum-seekers.
DeSantis in the last week has faced criticism and compliments for the decision, in which Florida chartered two planes to fly about 50 undocumented migrants from San Antonio, Texas, to the Massachusetts island.
The GOP lawmaker's office later clarified that the move was part of Florida's "relocation program to transport illegal immigrants to sanctuary destinations" — the most recent effort by GOP leaders to highlight what they call a crisis at the US Southern border.
Immigration advocates have uniformly rebuked the stunt, accusing DeSantis of prioritizing politics — and specifically, his aims for higher office — over the real lives of the Venezuelan and Colombian migrants caught in the crossfire.
"We all know this is sheer political theater," Vicki Gaubeca, director of Southern Border Communities Coalition, told Insider. "Florida is not on the US-Mexico border, so the migrants were transported to Martha's Vineyard from Texas on Floridians' dime."
She added that, instead of "caring about human beings fleeing political or economical disasters and providing a humane, orderly solution," DeSantis, along with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, "chose to lay bare their cruelty, add another layer of suffering and make the problem worse."
During a weekend speech at a Republican rally in Wisconsin, DeSantis doubled down on the move, saying that the migrants he sent to Martha's Vineyard had "hit the jackpot to be in the wealthiest sanctuary jurisdiction in the world."
It's carefully-chosen language on DeSantis' part but doesn't represent the reality for most migrants, according to immigration experts.
"Migrants being transported under false pretenses, away from their intended home communities, with the families and friends willing to receive them, to an island with no immigration courts or ICE field offices where migrants can check-in, can hardly be considered 'hitting the jackpot,'" Nicole Ramos, Al Otro Lado's Border Rights Project director, said in a statement to Insider.
"It looks more like a different shade of family separation to me," Ramos continued.
The migrants who landed in Martha's Vineyard last week were given misleading brochures promising cash assistance and job placement services before touching down on the island, according to lawyers for the migrants. Some of the asylum seekers also told NPR that a woman, who solely identified herself as "Perla," promised they would receive work permits in Boston after arriving.
The migrants on Tuesday filed a federal class action lawsuit against DeSantis, claiming that the incident was a "premeditated, fraudulent, and illegal scheme."

The governor's ongoing rhetoric, including his "jackpot" remark, could have longterm, harmful repercussions for migrants, according to Pedro Rios, director of the American Friends Service Committee's US/Mexico Border Program.
"By suggesting that the migrants he flew to Martha's Vineyard have a hit a 'jackpot,' he minimizes the harrowing experiences migrants have faced in their home countries and what they've encountered along dangerous routes," Rios told Insider.
He added: "This has the effect of dehumanizing them, which makes it easier for DeSantis' supporters to be intolerant of people in vulnerable conditions and easier to deny migrants and asylum seekers basic rights and protections."
Many migrants face danger and even the threat of death during their immigration experience, only to be met with further animosity once they reach the US, Rios said, which can have significant impacts on a person's mental health.
Earlier this week, an asylum seeker died by suicide in a New York City homeless shelter, Mayor Eric Adams announced on Monday. While there were few details released about the incident, Adams said at a press conference that the woman's death highlights the traumatizing experiences many migrants face.
"All local and state jurisdictions have the obligation to welcome migrants and asylum seekers with measures that uplift their dignity, that prioritize their emotional, mental, and physical integrity," Rios said.

Drag Race‘s dirty dozen came together for a virtual reunion on Friday, and while they didn’t directly address the biggest scandal of Season 12, the queens still served a few slices of shady pie.
Crystal Methyd, Gigi Goode, Jaida Essence Hall, Jackie Cox, Heidi N Closet, Widow Von’Du, Jan, Brita, Aiden Zhane, Nicky Doll, Rock M. Sakura and Dahlia Sin kicked things off with a group number, “The Shady Bunch,” led by… oh, like I even need to say. “We were 13 queens competing all together,” they sang, followed by a record-scratch moment, courtesy of Ms. Jaida: “Well, technically only 12.”
The second indirect reference to Sherry Pie came during the too-brief reading segment, with Brita delivering this surprisingly savage line to Dahlia: “You sure do talk a big game for someone who came in 13th place on a 12-person season!”
Keep scrolling for a recap of the biggest make-ups, throw-downs and Ru-velations from the 90-minute therapy session, led by a mysterious luchador with a striking resemblance to RuPaul:
HEIDI MAKES GOODE | The first uncomfortable Season 12 moment addressed (directly) in the reunion was Heidi and Gigi’s awkward exchange after the Frozen-themed runway challenge. “I completely regret the way that it came out,” Gigi said. “It was meant to be constructive. It definitely came out really wrong, but in the moment, I just wanted you to excel in the areas that others wanted you to excel in. … The most important thing is, look at you now. You’ve [had] such a glow-up. Look at you now!” Not that this was much of a feud to squash, but Heidi “100-percent” accepted Gigi’s apology.
TRAPPED WITH ‘N CLOSET’ | As much as Heidi appreciates the many alternative names Ru came up for her during the season — from Heidi Aphrodite to Heidi Almighty — she says her fans have dubbed themselves “Closet Cases,” so she’ll have to keep the “N Closet” in her name for a little while longer. The host’s Ru-sponse? “Well, just let me say that, um, that is… a mistake.”
DOLL’S NOT PLAYING | Remember when all of the queens said Nicky should be sent home, but rather than defend herself, she also picked herself? Yeah, she regrets that. “I feel very stupid now, because I feel like, rewatching the episode and watching it as a viewer, I should have backed up my role way more,” she said. “It’s a lot of emotions when you’re being named one after the other. I let the stress get the most of me.” And things got super awkward when Ru asked the queens if they regret choosing Nicky. Brita played it safe, saying “we all did an amazing job” and “we had to pick someone,” while Heidi straight up told Ru, “I said her name and I’d probably say it again.”
AIDEN, UNFILTERED | Though Aiden clarified that she didn’t consider the other queens’ treatment of her to have been “bullying,” she did acknowledge that she was “terrified” to compete this season, and that “fear is like blood to a shark.” The self-proclaimed “bedroom queen” also found herself defending the nap heard ’round the workroom, explaining, “It wasn’t a matter of me being lazy or me not giving a f–k.” She simply felt the garment was done. After Aiden called out Brita (“She came in with expectations of herself, and she felt she wasn’t living up to that”), Brita admitted that she let the competition get to her, adding that she didn’t like the person she saw while watching the season. She also tried to say that she loves Aiden “when it comes down to it,” but Widow called shenanigans immediately. And I can’t say she’s wrong.
DAHLIA’S ORIGINAL SIN | When asked why she angrily stormed off after being eliminated, Dahlia surprised the entire assemblage of queens by saying the could think of a few girls who deserved to be go home over her. In fact, she named them: “Crystal, I definitely thought you should have been in the bottom,” the Broc-ally declared. “Crystal, Nicky and Widow — the bottom.”
ROCK ON A ROLL | Speaking of emotional exits, Ru also had Rock walk the queens through her own tearful outburst. “When you called my name, I thought I was going to be in the top,” she sad. “So it was like a steady incline on a roller coaster, and it fell so hard.” Crystal called it “the hardest elimination” to watch because “you could hear her crying backstage and it broke all of our hearts.” Fortunately, Rock says she’s now a much more confident queen than she was during the competition.
TEARS OF A JAN | Dressed in a bathrobe patterned with that face, Jan admitted that her own emotional breakdown wasn’t entirely over her best friend Brita’s elimination. “When you said my name, I was like, ‘Here we go, this is it!’” Jan told Ru. “I definitely did cry and was upset about Brita leaving, but the girls were right. I was definitely more upset because I’m a singer, so If I didn’t win this challenge … why am I here?”
PAIR OF QUEENS | As for the rumors of a romantic relationship between Gigi and Crystal, the queens played relatively coy at the reunion. “Ru, you know just as well as I do that that mullet can really do something to ya,” Gigi said, to which Crystal added, “I think that there’s always a little bit of fact in the fiction.”

Benjamin Green, an airman in the South Pacific during World War II, saw firsthand how tropical rays left soldiers with blistering sunburns. So he concocted a red gel thick enough to block the sun’s rays — red veterinary petrolatum, aka “red vet pet” — and distributed it to Army Air Corps members to slather on.
It failed to catch on; the red goo was sticky, messy and left glaring stains. But Green refused to give up. Bent over his stove, he mixed cocoa butter and jasmine, testing batches until he had what would turn into Coppertone, the first consumer suntan product that promised a sun-kissed look. It hit the market just as fashion and medicine were celebrating a “healthy glow,” and the public lapped it up. Soon, though, the image of bronze bombshells was linked to rising skin cancer rates, and advertising quickly shifted from “suntanning” to “sun protection,” and sales picked up again. Now, years later, the sunblock market is under assault: Are we soaking up hidden risks?
Medicine couldn’t make suntanning chic — that took French fashion designer Coco Chanel.
There was a time that snow-white complexions symbolized privilege — otherwise you looked like “you were out working,” says Sarah Angleton, a historical fiction writer. But after the Industrial Revolution, it was “the workers [who] were the people cooped inside,” and the rich could afford to luxuriate in the sun. Then, in the late 1800s, the medical world got on board: In 1890, for example, Scottish medical missionary Theobold Palm observed that exposure to sunlight prevented rickets, a disease caused by a lack of vitamin D. And American physician John Harvey Kellogg began promoting the incandescent light bath, which he (incorrectly) thought could treat everything from typhoid to diabetes. Niels Ryberg Finsen, a Faroese-Danish physician, won the Nobel Prize for discovering that light radiation could treat lupus.
But medicine couldn’t make suntanning chic — that took French fashion designer Coco Chanel. When she stepped off a cruise in the 1920s, fans took note of her tawny glow, associating it with the jet set, and the look became an overnight hit. By the 1950s, the sunscreen market had soared to $ 9.2 million, and in 1959, Coppertone introduced its iconic beach girl in pigtails, bronzed except for her pale bottom, a glimpse of which was revealed by her playful puppy tugging on her swimsuit. “Don’t be a paleface!” the slogan exhorted.
But it didn’t take long before science uncovered tanning’s darker side. A 1979 British Journal of Cancer study detected a heightened risk of melanoma for people who live closer to the equator — due to more intense sunlight exposure — in England and North America. And the FDA published a report warning that excessive sun exposure could lead to skin cancer. Marketeers, however, were slow to catch on, and it wasn’t until the ’80s, following an explosion of health studies, that “sunscreen” began to replace “suntan lotion.” The product improved, too. Until the 1980s, sunscreen protected against only UVB rays. But mounting evidence that UVA rays could also contribute to cancer led to the introduction of so-called sunscreens that offer “broad-spectrum protection” against both UVA and UVB. Even the Coppertone girl smartened up, covering her now noticeably pale skin with a T-shirt. Driven by consumer anxiety, sunscreen sales in the U.S. rocketed from $ 18 million in 1972 to $ 500 million in 1996.
Recently, sunscreen has again increasingly come under fire. As the “villainization of chemicals” like BPA and phthalates in plastics over the past decade has spread, these and other ingredients in sunscreen have been subjected to rigorous scrutiny. In 2008, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a paper that found benzophenone-3 — a UV absorber — in 97 percent of the urine samples analyzed, followed by another paper linking exposure to high levels of benzophenone-3 in the pregnant women studied with decreased birth weight for newborn girls and increased birth weight for newborn boys. A 2012 Environmental Science and Technology study suggests an association between benzophenone and endometriosis, a painful, chronic disease. As with BPA, some scientists are concerned that if these ingredients penetrate the skin, “they could act as endocrine disruptors,” says Kerry Hanson, a chemist at the University of California, Riverside. Endocrine disruptors may be linked to breast and other cancers, as well as cognitive and sexual development problems. Amid growing concerns, the Environmental Working Group, a sunscreen watchdog, has started releasing an annual guide that measures various products’ safety and effectiveness.
But because ingredients like zinc oxide and benzophenone act as crucial filters that block skin cancer-causing UV rays, most doctors — as well as the FDA — continue to recommend broad-spectrum sunscreens with an SPF of at least 15. Among their biggest concerns, in fact, is that folks don’t apply enough or often enough to get maximum protection. So while the heated debate continues, it’s probably best to keep your sunscreen close at hand.

Indigo plants have been used to dye fabric for thousands of years. Unlike other dyes, indigo does not end up chemically linked to textile fibers; rather, it adsorbs to the surface of the threads. This allows the fibers’ white cores to show through to various degrees after abrasion. Hence that impossible-to-replicate look of perfectly worn-in jeans.
But indigo plants yield only a small amount of the dye. It’s not nearly enough to keep pace with the enormous demand that Levi Strauss unleashed when he invented blue jeans in the 1870s. Now, after over a century of relying on a lot of toxic chemicals to make a synthetic version, researchers have engineered bacteria that will make it.
The demand for blue dye was handled by one of Strauss’ fellow Bavarians—Adolph von Baeyer, of aspirin fame. He found a way to make a synthetic version of indigo, for which he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1905.

Snapchat’s Evan Spiegel doesn’t appear to believe in Facebook’s famous motto of “move fast and break things.”
The Snap CEO recently threw shade at Mark Zuckerberg’s early mantra, which has seeped out of the tech industry and into pop culture through TV shows like HBO’s “Silicon Valley.”
“One of the things that happens when you’re an innovator is there’s actually no benefit to being really, really fast,” Spiegel said in an interview with Wired’s Jessi Hempel published on Tuesday. “You’re the one creating the new stuff, so there’s no one who’s racing you. It’s actually very important that you are slow and deliberate.”
Spiegel critiquing the ideology that underpins Facebook’s business strategy shouldn’t come as a surprise, given that the two companies are in fierce competition for ad dollars and user attention.
And Snapchat’s actions back up his words. While Facebook constantly tests new features and tweaks with small subsets of its user base, Snapchat has historically preferred to develop new features internally before releasing them to users.

Spiegel’s seen the move-fast mentality from workers that Los Angeles-based Snap hires from Silicon Valley, he told Wired.
“It’s like, why?” he said. “That just doesn’t make sense.”
