With six stragglers still uncoupled atop Monday’s season finale of Are You the One?, the entire group was desperate to figure out the final three combinations and snag what remained of that $ 750,000 grand prize. “We have to do this,” Basit declared. “Not only for love, not only for money, but for the queer community.” (But no pressure or anything!) Though the remaining six thought they had their pairings figured out ahead of the final challenge — Kylie and Amber, Kari and Max, and Remy and Justin — they would soon be blindsided by reality. Once again, Basit reaffirmed his position as the show’s voice of reason by admitting, “I don’t trust these six people to know what’s best for them.” Following a promising date, Kylie and Amber entered the Truth Booth with confidence… only to discover that they weren’t, in fact, a match. (Don’t worry, Max was right there to tell everyone “I told you so!” as if he didn’t spend the entire season chasing after the wrong person.) At this point, the group was more desperate than ever, prompting the six remaining singles to sit down and brainstorm. Following the world’s least romantic round of speed dating, Justin was “hopeful and confident” in his compatibility with Amber, at least enough to take her into the Boom Boom Room while everybody else enjoyed a group skinny dip. (Well, almost everybody else. As always, voice-of-reason Basit pointed out, “That doesn’t look sanitary at all.”) Despite the contestants’ best efforts, lingering doubts about the three couples remained ahead of the final light beam ceremony. Max chose to stand with Kari, though his rationale (“I have to follow my heart”) was a little ridiculous, given that he’s obviously still not over Justin; Amber chose to stand with Remy, admitting that she just doesn’t think she can trust Justin in a relationship setting; and Justin chose to stand with… Kylie? Sure, why not. Much to everyone’s surprise, however, these last-minute mashups were right on the money. The hour ended with eight beams of light appearing for all eight couples — Danny and Kai, Max and Kari, Amber and Remy, Basit and Jonathan, Nour and Jasmine, Justin and Kylie, Paige and Jenna, and Brandon and Aasha (remember them?) — and a well-deserved celebratory dance party. OK, time to reflect: What did you think of AYTO‘s first all-fluid cast? And which of this season’s matches surprised you the most? Drop a comment with all of your thoughts on Monday’s finale.

When students did complain –about groping, harassing comments, even rape– administrators failed to act, hinting instead at unpleasant consequences for the complainants.
The plaintiffs are seeking $ 70 million in damages and want the New Hampshire ivy to adopt policies that would prevent a repeat of such abuse. Lawyer Deborah Marcuse explained the suit, filed Thursday, was a last-ditch effort to make Dartmouth a place where women can “be safe and able to, as they say, put their heads down and do science.”
The professors, Todd Heatherton, William Kelley and Paul Whalen, allegedly turned the psychology department into a “21st Century Animal House,” complete with a hot tub, nonstop drinking, vulgar comments (including a contest to staff the “hottest lab”), and a bacchanalian atmosphere punctuated with unwanted sexual conduct, from groping to rape.
By 2002, at least one student had complained Heatherton groped her, and further harassment and discrimination complaints were lodged against him and Whalen in 2005. By then, Heatherton chaired the department, which had just brought in the largest peer-reviewed grant in Dartmouth’s history. The school, needless to say, did nothing. Ironically, much of Heatherton’s psychological research focuses on the neurological mechanisms underlying self-control.
Each woman believed she was the only victim of the most serious harassment, according to plaintiff Annemarie Brown.
I assumed it was just me. The men who were involved in perpetuating these events were incredibly good at what they did.
The professors implied severe repercussions should the women complain, according to Brown, who claims Whalen told her early on that the last student to speak up had “got what was coming to her” and been “iced out” of the field. “We were forced into a code of silence,” she said.
The spell was only broken during a March 2017 academic conference after Heatherton drunkenly groped and came on to plaintiff Sasha Brietzke, in full view of several other students who’d endured similar advances. These women met with the Director of Graduate Studies and Department Chairman, but the administrators actually encouraged the women to continue working with their harassers so as to avoid academic probation or even expulsion and took no action, according to the suit.
I stand in righteous fury beside fellow women in science in filing a lawsuit against Dartmouth. We want our voices to be heard. We demand to be taken seriously. We demand change. Thread (1/10)https://t.co/LkBlpem3Xx#metooSTEM#MeToo

Plaintiff Andrea Courtney, a doctoral student harassed by Kelley, explained “this was an open secret. A lot of this behavior was happening to everyone, and nobody in a position of power stood up to do anything about it.” Frustrated with Dartmouth’s inaction, the victims filed Title IX complaints against the school, which finally placed the professors on administrative leave three months later. During the interim, perhaps feeling he had nothing to lose, Kelley allegedly raped one of the plaintiffs.
While the school did conduct a protracted internal investigation beginning in late 2017, the lawsuit alleges this was for appearances only, and administrators ultimately allowed Kelley and Whalen to resign and Heatherton to retire with their reputations intact earlier this year. They are no longer allowed on campus but have not been punished further.
The lawsuit is separate from a New Hampshire Attorney General’s investigation into sexual misconduct by the three professors that began last October.

One combat soldier and one security observer from the Military Police’s Border Crossings Unit are accused of violating orders and sexually harassing women during their searches at the Qalandiya checkpoint next to Ramallah.
According to the allegations, the pair touched Palestinian women’s private parts during their frisking and sometimes forced them to strip. The two IDF servicemen also allegedly stole cash from Palestinians at the checkpoint.
After being apprehended last week and following the initial investigation by the military police unit, Jaffa Military Court extended their detentions until next Friday. Their misconduct, the court believes, amongst other offenses, could constitute racism.
“The allegations recount theft by a public servant, looting and abuse of power based on racist motives in addition to sexual offenses,” Judge Ihsan Halabi noted, extending the duo’s custody, Ynet reports.
While one of the soldiers denies the charges against him, Military Advocate General Captain Ariella Segal noted that “serious suspicions” in the case remain, requiring “additional” investigations. “The soldiers carried out acts without authority and contrary to correct procedure in strip-searching a number of women,” she stressed.
One of the main crossings into the West Bank, the Qalandiya checkpoint is often viewed as the hotspot of tension between the IDF and Palestinians. Those using the checkpoint often complain about being harshly interrogated while passing through the crossing.

Tensions between the neighbors have reached an all-time high, following Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital back in December. Clashes near Qalandiya checkpoint have been making headlines for months, ever since the Palestinians organized their Great March of Return protests, calling for an end to the 12-year-long Israeli blockade of Gaza. Over 180 Palestinians have been killed and thousands of others injured since the outbreak of the Gaza border protests on March 30, which demand the right of return for refugees.

A grand jury in Pennsylvania released a 1,300-word report Tuesday detailing allegations that the Roman Catholic Church spent decades covering up sexual abuse claims against 300 “predator priests” who are said to have targeted nearly 1,000 children.
The report covers 70 years of alleged abuse and the lengths that church officials went to cover up the accusations, using what investigators described in the report as a “a playbook for concealing the truth.”See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Facebook is no stranger to blunders and it just added another to its running list. The Guardian reports that the company asked some of its users to take a survey over the weekend, with questions delving into what should or shouldn’t be allowed on the site and who should police content. Among these questions was one that read, “There are a wide range of topics and behaviors that appear on Facebook. In thinking about an ideal world where you could set Facebook’s policies, how would you handle the following: a private message in which an adult man asks a 14 year old girl for sexual pictures.” Survey takers could respond that such content should be allowed and they wouldn’t mind seeing it, that it should be allowed but they wouldn’t want to see it, that it shouldn’t be allowed or no preference.
In a follow-up question, Facebook then asked users for their thoughts on who should decide the rules regarding such content. Response options included Facebook on its own, Facebook with advice from external experts, external experts on their own or Facebook users. In neither question did the survey acknowledge a role for law enforcement or that in many places, such actions would be illegal.

Facebook has since stopped running the surveys and Guy Rosen, Facebook’s VP of product, said they were “a mistake.” Writing on Twitter, Rosen said, “We run surveys to understand how the community thinks about how we set policies. But this kind of activity is and will always be completely unacceptable on FB. We regularly work with authorities if identified. It shouldn’t have been part of this survey. That was a mistake.”
Though it appears that Facebook was pretty quick to remove the questions, there’s no reason they should ever have been there in the first place. And it’s mind-boggling to think that anyone would have considered them to be appropriate queries to begin with. In a statement to the Guardian, Facebook said, “We understand this survey refers to offensive content that is already prohibited on Facebook and that we have no intention of allowing so have stopped the survey. We have prohibited child grooming on Facebook since our earliest days; we have no intention of changing this and we regularly work with the police to ensure that anyone found acting in such a way is brought to justice.”

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said today more needs to be done to address the concerns of the #metoo movement than not sexually harassing women.
“We need a world where women don’t get sexually harassed, full stop, period, but what’s important: That’s not enough, not enough,” she said onstage at the Castro Theater in San Francisco. “We need a world where women, and women of color particularly, get equal opportunity. It is not enough not to harass us. It’s necessary, but not sufficient.”
Sandberg continued to say she’s worried about the potential unintended consequences of #MeToo, and talked about #MentorHer, an initiative began last month by her nonprofit organization LeanIn.org.
Men occupy the majority of management positions, and a LeanIn.org and SurveyMonkey survey conducted in January found that twice as many male managers now feel uncomfortable working alone with a woman, a trend that could have a negative impact on women’s careers.
“Senior men are 3.5 times more likely to hesitate to have a work dinner with a junior woman than a junior man, 5 times more likely to hesitate to travel with a junior woman than a junior man. And that is a problem because I remember when I published Lean In 5 years ago, one of the most common responses I got from senior men was ‘You’re right, I take the man out for drinks, not the woman; I spend time with the man, not the woman; and that is the informal and formal mentoring time that women are not getting.’”
The result, she said, leads to a disproportionate number of men in leadership roles compared to women.
Men and women deserve equal access to that informal mentorship from managers, so if you don’t have dinner with junior woman, don’t have dinners with junior men either, Sandberg suggested. She brought the same message to a Morgan Stanley conference for investors and people in the tech and telecom industries earlier this week.
Well-known leaders in tech who have taken the #MentorHer pledge include Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner, and Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky.
Policy changes can positively affect trends of sexual harassment and inequality, but so can culture, she said, and that’s a good thing, because “the good news is when it’s cultural, it means you can change it.”
“Culture does change, and culture has to change, it has to,” she said pointing to studies that have found that more diverse organizations produce better results. “I’m sure with every movement and every movement towards a following there are lifting, inspiring moments and moments when it feels impossible. But we have no choice but to change.”
In the home, more needs to be done as well, she said, since women in heterosexual relationships traditionally do 30-40 percent more of the child rearing and chores around the house.
“If you want to know what’s holding women back in the workplace, that’s a big chunk of it too, right? Because women have two jobs and men have one,” Sandberg said.
This is less of a problem for gay or lesbian couples, who tend to share chores more evenly.
“As a woman, you’re much better off with a woman,” she said.
Sandberg spoke today with Recode editor Kara Swisher at Lesbians Who Tech, a conference attended by more than 5,000 people in San Francisco’s Castro District.
