The Fosters sisters Callie and Mariana officially made the move to L.A. with Tuesday’s debut of the spinoff Good Trouble, during which their hottie housemate probably steamed up your TV screen.
After moving into their new communal living digs, Callie hit it off with fellow resident Gael (played by Tommy Martinez), an artist and graphic designer at Mariana’s tech job. The two bonded over art… and then bonded in bed! There’s just one problem: When Callie first met Gael poolside in the middle of the night, she wasn’t aware that he was the guy Mariana’s crushing on. Still, Callie decided honesty was the best policy and confessed to her sis that she had sex with the lusciously locked fella. Mariana was shocked, but an even bigger surprise awaited the girls as the hour came to a close: the sight of Gael in his room, hooking up… with a guy! “I forgive you,” a wide-eyed Mariana declared to Callie.
Below, executive producer Joanna Johnson talks about the significance of the twist and building a different kind of TV love triangle.
TVLINE | In the premiere, we learned that Gael is bisexual. Why was it important for you to include that?
In The Fosters, we talked a lot about sexuality. Obviously, at the helm of this family were the two moms, and our LGBTQ audience is really important to us. We wanted to make sure that that was an aspect going into [Good Trouble], and especially because we were taking our two straight girls into the show. We were like, “What is something that we haven’t really explored in the LGBTQ community?” Bisexuality is something we hadn’t really explored, especially on a man, because I think that people are comfortable with women being bisexual. I think they believe it, they can see it. But I think people really don’t get it in men. Across the board, I think a lot of people don’t believe you can be bisexual, and so that’s really hard on people that are bisexual, because they feel like there’s not really a place for them. Gay people think, “Oh, you’re really straight, and you’re just playing.” Or straight people think, “Oh, you’re really gay, but you just don’t want to come out.” There are just a lot of interesting issues. So we wanted to show this gorgeous, very-comfortable-in-his-sexuality guy, who is bisexual, and also explore how that’s hard for him in ways, too.
TVLINE | Gael is seeing somebody else (played by Switched at Birth‘s Michael Galante) in addition to being interested in Callie. This is a very different kind of love triangle than we usually see on TV. What are you excited to explore with that? And is there anything you can tease about how that’s going to evolve in the upcoming episodes?
What we wanted to show is that these are both really viable relationships, and with equal investment in [both of] them… They’re not ready for any kind of commitment, and they don’t want to be exclusive. But I think the most interesting thing is, What do you do when you actually live in the same building, in a communal living space, with someone that you’re intimately involved with, that you’re not exclusive with? You have to run into the other people that they’re dating, and does that make that other person feel that, “Oh, well, she can just go upstairs and go to his loft anytime she wants, but I don’t live with them. So I have to make a plan to come over,” and does that give [Callie] an advantage? That’s kind of what we center on in this love triangle. We don’t want to make it all about, “He’s bisexual.” It’s really about a real love triangle.
TVLINE | Gael’s bisexuality, even though it’s very much about him, does also impact Callie. How is she processing this information in Episode 2?
I think everybody has to check their unconscious bias. We all, especially progressive people, want to feel like, “Hey, I’m open to everything, and I understand,” and Callie did have a relationship with Aaron, who was transgender. So Callie has an open mind and really sees the person… But she has to just check herself and say, “Am I uncomfortable? Would I feel the same way if I’d seen him with a girl? Is it more threatening for me? Do I feel like, ‘Oh, there’s something I can’t give him?’ Like, Bryan can give him something that I can’t give him?” I think that’s what everybody who dates a bisexual person who isn’t bisexual themselves struggles with: How do I give that person everything if they like both sexes?

Boxer Amir Khan has taken a somewhat bizarre route on his latest barrage of insults to fellow Brit Kell Brook, telling the Sheffield native to open up about rumors of him being gay.
It seems inevitable that Khan and Brook will meet inside the squared circle before long, and in advance of the match-up between the two domestic rivals, Olympic silver medalist Khan has opened up by throwing insults before they throw down in the ring.
In an interview with English tabloid The Sun, Khan brought up allegations regarding Brook’s sexuality in a presumed attempt to get a verbal one-up on his rival ahead of a potential fight next year.
“There’s talks about [Brook] being gay,” Khan said. “I mean, if you are a real man, come out and say ‘yeah, you know, I’m gay’ and it is what it is. Come out and tell the truth. Speak out about it. Don’t be afraid.”
“If he is a confident man he needs to come out and tell the world who he really is, because people wanna know about him. People wanna know who is this Kell Brook,” he added.
Doubling down on the claims, Khan said that he suspected that a knife attack suffered by Brook four years ago was related to his sexuality.

Brook was attacked in Tenerife four years ago by man wielding a machete and was left requiring 32 metal staples in a significant wound on his thigh.
“Tell us what happened when you got stabbed,” he said. “I mean, was it because tried it on with some poor guy? He tried to get it on with some poor guy. I mean these are things that have been told from his own camp.
“I mean I wasn’t there to see it but I’ve been told and he’s living a crazy life. So maybe that’s why he’s dying for this fight against me, because he knows he needs that quick payday. Let’s see,” Khan said.
According to The Sun, Brook declined a riposte to Khan’s comments preferring instead to punish his opponent in the ring, he said.
Brook holds a record of 38-2 and has rebounded with two wins in his last two fights after successive defeats to Gennady Golovkin and Errol Spence Jr. Meanwhile, Khan owns a 33-4 record but hasn’t been defeated since a May 2016 reverse to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
In January of this year Khan and Brook came face to face in the ring after Khan’s first-round win against Phil Lo Greco in Liverpool. Brook, who was part of the fight’s commentary team, entered the ring after the fight and squared off with Khan, who promised to “fight and beat” his rival.

These eye-opening facts, which fly in the face of most conventional wisdom regarding who “cheats” and why, are just some of the norm-shattering ideas put forth in Untrue: Why Nearly Everything We Believe About Women, Lust, and Infidelity Is Wrong and How the New Science Can Set Us Free (out this week from Little, Brown), in which cultural critic and social researcher Wednesday Martin delves into the increasingly female-dominated field of sex research, and comes up with some game-changing conclusions. Here’s a taste.
From “The ‘Infidelity Workaround’
Alicia Walker—an assistant professor of sociology at Missouri State University—does research that forces us to rethink not only female sexuality but our most cherished and basic beliefs about what women do and are, what they want and how they behave, and the role that context plays. In her extensive review of the sociological and psychological studies on female infidelity, and her own study of forty-six female users of the Ashley Madison website before its infamous hack and shutdown in 2015 (“Life is short. Have an affair,” the company’s tagline suggested), Walker explodes several of our most dearly held notions about fe- male infidelity: that women cheat only when they are unhappy in their marriages; that unlike men, they seek emotional connection, not sexual gratification, from affairs; and that like Diane Lane’s character in Unfaithful, who literally falls and skins her knee, thus attracting the attention of the man with whom she has tryst after hot tryst, women “just” stumble into affairs. For Walker’s cohort, this was no case of having one too many at the holiday party and then somehow sleeping with a coworker. “These women weren’t just falling into it or seeking out companionship,” Walker told me flatly when we spoke on the phone one morning after she had bustled her daughter off to school.
Walker, who has blonde hair, favors red lipstick, and speaks with a touch of a Southern drawl, is well aware that her findings demolish certain familiar stereotypes. She is also conscious of the profound discomfort this might cause and more than once told me she hoped that readers of the book she wrote based on her study of female infidelity, The Secret Life of the Cheating Wife, would not shoot the messenger as they took in just how different women who commit in- fidelity are from our comforting clichés about them. But her email signature includes a quote from the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, one she lives: “My goal is to contribute to preventing people from being able to utter all kinds of nonsense about the social world.” Walker wanted me to know that the women she interviewed were funny, smart, and insightful, and most of all, they struck her as very normal. They worked quiet jobs and enjoyed being mothers, having friendly conversations with neighbors, and, in some cases, going to church.
They were also dead set on having affairs.
“The women I studied went on the [Ashley Madison] site. Created a profile. Checked back in for responses. Vetted candidates. And then met them in person. Then they ‘auditioned’ them. This was a very intentional process,” Walker emphasized. They undertook it, they told Walker, because they wanted to find partners. For sex. Most of Walker’s study participants, who ranged in age from twenty-four to sixty-five, reported being in sexless or orgasm-less marriages and told Walker they simply wanted and needed what they couldn’t get at home. But perhaps most surprisingly, the majority of women in Walker’s sample reported that they were otherwise happily partnered or married, and that these affairs were a way for them to remain in their primary relationships. They were not looking for an exit strategy or a new husband. They did not seek emotional connection or companionship. They wanted a solution to a dilemma: they felt unable or were unwilling to end their sexless or sexually unsatisfying partnerships or marriages, but they also wanted great sex. After years of sexual deprivation and dissatisfaction and struggling to stay monogamous, the women, who described themselves as otherwise unremarkable, decided to do something about it. Erica (forty-six and married) said, “One day I had just had it. I really wish I could remember what exactly caused me to search online for ‘someone’ because that is not like me at all.” Regina, thirty-eight and also married, added, “I tried very hard to just ride it out. I held out as long as I could. Once I gave in, I wondered what took me so long.” “[A] lack of sex drove me crazy,” forty-seven-year-old Tiffany told Walker simply. “I finally decided [after many years of no sex] that I deserved to have my needs met,” fifty-three-year-old Georgie said…
Walker notes that these women were rather creatively inventing a space in which they could get their needs met while avoiding the stigma, inconvenience, financial strain, and emotional pain of divorce. She calls their strategy an “infidelity workaround,” a way to have your cake and eat it too. Of course the women of Walker’s sample were taking considerable risks. Should their husbands find out, the marriages they were trying to preserve would surely end (because women who used Ashley Madison were not required to provide as much information as male users were, they were not affected by the hack of 2015). They also knew they were likely to be shamed and shunned in their communities if they were caught. And on the site itself, they were often subjected to male rage and retaliation for ending a liaison, or even for not messaging back after an invitation to do so. “You’re a fat cow no one would fu*k anyway” one man wrote to a woman (who had not posted a photo) when she didn’t respond to his online overture. Men sometimes also left information on the “feedback” section of the women’s profiles, falsely suggesting they had slept with them and rating the experience unfavorably, as “payback” for the women not responding to them. Slut-shaming apparently exists even where men and women come together to cheat. Such consequences for simply being on the site and exercising the right not to connect with male users who desire it were common, the women told Walker.
But the participants in her study wanted sex badly enough that they willingly took these chances. They had run the calculus and considered the options: cheat for sexual satisfaction and accept the risk it entailed; don’t cheat and continue to live without satisfying sex, or any sex at all; be openly non-monogamous and risk almost certain stigma in their communities and blowback from their husbands, including, possibly, divorce; initiate divorce, thus, in the words of one woman, “dismantling my life and breaking my husband’s heart as well as my own.” Divorce could mean custody issues, financial hardship, and the loss of social and family support. In Walker’s formulation, “These women were unwilling to toss the dice a second time on marriage and risk ending up with a lesser hand than the one they currently held.” They efficiently pursued what they wanted and confounded our received script that women don’t care about or need sex the way men do, and that women who have affairs fall in love and inevitably “destroy their marriages” because “women who have affairs want emotional connection, not sex.” As Walker says, “These women enjoyed the time spent with outside partners but were not left pining for them to ride in on a white horse and sweep them away into the sunset.” Walker’s study subjects challenge just about all our received notions of female sexuality, fidelity, and motivation.

Wildling is Fritz Böhm’s first feature film, and it’s such an assured debut, darkly mystical and elegant. This nighttime fairy tale tells the story of Anna (Bel Powley), a young woman who’s spent much of her life locked in a room like Rapunzel, with only “Daddy” (Lord of the Rings’ Brad Dourif, in an equally untrustworthy role) as company.
Daddy treats Anna with tenderness, warning her against “the wildling” that stalks the woods surrounding their remote fairy tale tower. He seems loving and protective – but he’s also keeping Anna in seclusion. We watch her grow from toddlerhood to young womanhood in the confines of the same tiny room – and all the while we keep seeing Daddy inject a mysterious substance into Anna’s tummy. These opening scenes are disorienting, diving right into the narrative instead of offering any tidy context, immediately eliciting intrigue and perplexity from the audience. The context comes later, as Wildling’s story grows clearer but never less strange.
Eventually, circumstances arise that free Anna, and she makes her way to a nearby small town, baffled by everything she sees, this grand, scary world outside the four walls she’s always known. The town’s sheriff (Liv Tyler as Ellen) takes Anna under her temporary custody, horrified by the girl’s tragic history. Ellen learns that Daddy was injecting Anna with hormones to keep her from arriving at sexual maturity, and under the safety of Ellen’s roof, Anna is finally allowed to reach puberty, at the same time growing closer to Ellen’s teen brother Ray (Collin Kelly-Sordelet).
Anna’s story grows much twistier at this point, and we spend the rest of the film watching this wide-eyed young woman navigate the precarious territory of sexual adolescence, with a darkly supernatural element complicating matters. Powley has a childlike, otherworldly quality about her beauty, and her movements are delicate and vulnerable as a newborn fawn’s. She and Tyler make a lovely duo, with Tyler’s innate warmth surrounding Powley, this protective aura around a girl who has been through so much, and who both needs and deserves the love of a mother figure after her abject treatment from Daddy.
As much as this is a beautiful story about the importance of sisterhood in the journey from child to woman, it’s also a really cool monster movie that goes to some very weird and creepy places. The creature effects are pretty great, and The Wildling never shies away from gore, violence or sex – but it’s all presented in such a deliberate, graceful way, never exploitative of this tricky subject matter.
It’s a lovely film to look at, with lush, macabre cinematography from Get Out’s Toby Oliver. Almost every shot feels like something out of Germany’s Black Forest, the birthplace of fairy tales, wild and gorgeous and dangerous. Paul Haslinger’s score is unnerving, as is the sound design, all culminating in a film that always feels fabled, a strange, beautiful tableau in which we become lost and can never be too comfortable. It goes to some unsuspecting places, but never loses the heart of an intimate, coming-of-age story that just so happens to feature monsters.
Wildling is, at its center, a story about the fear fathers have of their daughters’ sexuality, and the great and ultimately misguided lengths they will go to in order to keep their little girls little forever. (In a very weird way, it would make an interesting double feature with SXSW’s headliner comedy Blockers for that reason.) Liv Tyler’s Ellen is a beacon of reason here, the wise and loving matriarch who understands that Anna must be able to reach womanhood regardless of the complications that might come with that growth. It’s a really smart approach to an ageless tale, and putting aside all deeper meaning, Wildling works on its surface as a cool and spooky monster movie with great performances and some extremely effective gore.
Wildling hits theaters on April 13, 2018.

Stewie Griffin is finally sitting down for a long-overdue therapy session.
The Wound, directed by John Trengove and co-written by Thando Mgqolozana, Malusi Bengu, and Trevgove (in isiXhosa with subtitles), stars Touré as a man who returns to the Eastern Cape bush yearly to perform the role of a caregiver in the weeks-long initiation of younger boys, as they prove themselves worthy of manhood in the wilderness while their wound heals, and as their stamina is tested. Touré’s character’s motives for participating are, however, not what they seem: his character, Xolani, is closeted, and returns annually to rekindle a continued affair with another initiator, the married-with-children Vija (Bongile Mantsai). But then Xolani’s initiate Kwanda (who himself is from a privileged background, questions the whole rite of passage, and happens to be gay) uncovers their secret. He becomes frustrated by their repression, and as CNN describes, “tradition, class and toxic masculinity clash” and rise “to an inevitable boil.”
Touré, who’d started receiving hate mail following a social media campaign against the film, told CNN that the individuals behind the abuse “don’t know what it’s about, or who made it, they’re just really mad that it exists…People were mad that a specific passage was being mentioned, but underneath it was the whole idea that the queerness made it even more perverse.” He continued to say, “There’s nothing I’m more proud of than being Xhosa…Sometimes I feel like there’s a demonization of the culture. On the other hand, the culture is very patriarchal.”
