On Monday, a Los Angeles Superior Court Judge approved a $ 119.5 million settlement between Southern California Gas (SoCalGas) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB). SoCalGas was responsible for the Aliso Canyon Natural Gas Storage Facility when one of the 115 storage wells at the site started leaking methane dramatically.

Stanching the leak took nearly five months, and in that time 109,000 metric tons of methane was spewed into the atmosphere.

Methane is an extremely potent greenhouse gas, capable of trapping more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide, although methane is shorter-lived. In addition to the headaches and nosebleeds suffered by the people living in the nearby Porter Ranch neighborhood, researchers later concluded that the leak had doubled the methane emissions rate of the whole Los Angeles Basin.

The settlement announced Monday was hailed as a victory by Young America’s Foundation (YAF) and the Berkeley College Republicans, who sued the university in 2017 over what they argued were unconstitutional practices restricting conservatives’ freedom of speech.

“This is a landmark free speech victory for all students at UC Berkeley,” Harmeet Dhillon, the attorney representing YAF, said on Monday. “We wanted a settlement that doesn’t benefit just conservative students, but all students.”

The university will no longer be able to “tax” speech on campus it considers disfavored or unpopular, Dhillon said, according to Reuters.

YAF and the College Republicans complained that the university’s policies and practices amounted to a “heckler’s veto” that allowed protesters to silence conservative speakers like Ben Shapiro. The security fee charged by the school for an event featuring Shapiro was three times the amount paid by the hosts of the liberal-leaning Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Under the settlement, there will no longer be a security fee for student events, unless students are handling money or serving alcohol. The university will also pay $ 70,000 to the plaintiffs as legal expenses.

Berkeley commented on the settlement by calling its new fee schedule consistent with treatment of all student groups, and the changes to its event policy “non-substantive.”

The policy challenged by YAF enabled the university to “work effectively with the Berkeley College Republicans as they hosted numerous events featuring prominent conservative speakers without incident or interruption,” UC Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof said in a statement.

Dhillon and YAF were more enthusiastic, however.

“YAF’s landmark victory for free expression — long squelched by Berkeley’s scheming administrators who weaponized flawed policies to target conservatives — shows that the battle for freedom undertaken by YAF on campuses nationwide is a necessary one,” said the group’s spokesman Spencer Brown.

Attorneys across the US have already reached out to say that they plan to use the settlement as a model for their free-speech lawsuits against other academic institutions, said Dhillon, who was named 2018 Republican Lawyer of the Year last month by the Republican National Lawyers’ Association.

“I hope it opens the door to student groups, advocacy groups, and lawyers all over the country to increase liberty on our campuses, where much of our future is shaped,” she added.

UC Berkeley made headlines in February 2017, when protests against the appearance of then-Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos turned into a riot, causing millions of dollars in property damage and forcing the event to be canceled.

Today, South Carolina energy company SCANA and its potential purchaser Dominion Energy reached a settlement with class-action litigants to offer a significant energy bill rate cut in exchange for the litigants dropping a lawsuit over $ 2 billion in energy bill fees. Attorneys for the class-action members told The Post and Courier that they will accept the deal if it’s approved.

SCANA was a 55 percent owner of the VC Summer nuclear power plant expansion, and when reactor maker Westinghouse went bankrupt early last year, the owners of the plant found themselves in a very bad position.

Stakeholders opted not to continue construction on Summer, unlike in Georgia, where a similar reactor construction project from Westinghouse found the public support to fulfill construction. Meanwhile, SCANA and its public-facing utility, South Carolina Electric and Gas (SCG&E) still found themselves on the hook after massive cost overruns. Customer energy bills subsidized the billions of dollars of construction that would ultimately go nowhere.

After 11 years of controversy, Samsung has apologized for creating an unsafe work environment that resulted in a number of former employees contracting leukemia and other cancers, according to the Associated Press. The company has vowed to compensate ill workers by 2028, per Reuters. The announcement comes weeks after Samsung reached a final settlement with Banolim, a group representing ex-Samsung workers and their families.

In a news conference held in Seoul, South Korea, Samsung’s president of its device solutions division Kinam Kim admitted that Samsung failed to “sufficiently manage health threats” in its semiconductor and liquid crystal display manufacturing facilities. Sharps, a Korean activist organization, has documented more than 200 individual cases of workers suffering from illness after working at a Samsung plant. Around 70 of those workers died, according to the company.

The apology and compensation promise mark the end of the company’s more than decade-long standoff with its former employees. The controversy started in 2007 when taxi driver Hwang Sang-gi refused to accept a settlement from the company for the death of his 23-year-old daughter, who died from leukemia after working at a Samsung plant. Samsung admitted to failing to respond to issues in its plants in 2014 and launch a fund that will pay out 100 billion won ($ 85.8 million) to compensate employees exposed to dangerous working conditions in 2015.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission’s lawsuit against and subsequent settlement with Elon Musk is overshadowing solid progress at Tesla’s California factory, according to one Wall Street analyst who recently toured the production plant.
