The 41-year-old had been serving a life sentence for the 1999 murder of his former girlfriend Hae Min Lee. In 2014, his case attracted international interest after it was chronicled by former Baltimore Sun reporter Sarah Koenig in the first season of the hit podcast Serial.

Koenig spent more than a year investigating the specifics of Syed’s case, focusing in particular on the conduct of his lawyer, Cristina Gutierrez. In 2019, Maryland’s highest court found Gutierrez had failed to properly investigate an alibi witness but voted against granting Syed’s request for a retrial. However, prosecutors recently recommended that a judge grant him a new trial, noting the state had lost “confidence in the integrity of the conviction.” With Monday’s decision, the state has 30 days to decide whether to move forward with a new trial or drop the case entirely.

“This is not a podcast for me,” said Young Lee, the brother of Hae Min Lee, during Monday’s hearing. He said his family felt “betrayed” and “blindsided” by the state’s motion to vacate Syed’s conviction. “Whenever I think it's over, and it’s ended, it always comes back,” he added.

Following the decision, Serialannounced it would air a new episode on Tuesday morning. In the years since its widely successful first season, Serial has produced a series of spinoffs, including S-Town and The Trojan Horse Affair. More broadly, it’s safe to say the true crime genre and podcasting more generally have never been more popular – even if the series was never quite able to replicate the success of its first season.

Erika Peña, 26, told relatives that she knew Ortiz for roughly four months, and that she agreed to accompany him to his house in Laredo, Texas, on September 14 after he offered her $ 500 for sex, Peña’s aunt, Marcela Rodriguez, told the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.

The northern Russian town of Petrozavodsk has been plunged into panic with rumors of a serial killer, after two young women were found dead less than a day apart. Police have arrested a potential suspect.

20-year-old fourth-year medicine student Lyudmila Serebryakova stepped outside her halls of residence in a well-lit part of town on Wednesday night.

The attack was sudden and brutal – stab wounds to the stomach and neck. Serebryakova, described as a “popular student from a good family”, who left her relatives behind in her small village to study, died before the ambulance arrived.

In the aftermath, a panic. Some eyewitnesses told local that they saw a man in camouflage gear waiting outside the dorms.

Word spread quickly that the assailant may have been Daniil, reportedly a former boyfriend Serebryakova ditched after he went away for his army service. But her current partner, Dmitry, told local outlet Gubernia Daily, that Daniil is still serving, and in any case the two men are best friends, and there is no grudge.

Her family say they do not have enough money to even organize the funeral, and have appealed for financial help online.

While police continued to investigate any personal motivations for the potential murder, and categorically deny that a killer was on the loose, a second attack occurred.

This time even more brazen – in broad daylight. Once again a woman was stabbed several times, in a woodland enclosure, underneath a traffic bridge. Police say that the second victim, who has not been named yet, died on the spot. Eyewitnesses claimed that she was still breathing when medics got to her, but having suffered massive blood loss, was dead soon after.

Passers-by alleged that they saw a man dressed all in black getting away from the crime scene. But how could a man get away unnoticed in a city of only 250,000?

Local outlet Runa posted CCTV footage of a man dressed all in black scuttling towards a busy intersection, before getting into the front seat of a taxi. Perhaps, this was the alleged murderer?

All police were placed on  high alert, and a manhunt was launched. But it wasn’t the men uniform who made the arrest.

“I saw a man running down the street, who seemed either disturbed or drunk,” Nikita Zhiglov, a local resident, told Gubernia Daily. “I began following him, and soon another man joined me. We caught up with him and pinned him down. His hands were covered in blood, so asked ‘Why?’ He said he cut them on a bottle. Then the police arrived, handcuffed him and took him away.”

The moment of the arrest was captured in amateur footage, and shows a man dressed in jeans – not the same outfit as on the CCTV camera – being bundled into a police vehicle.

A local source told the media unverified information that the detainee was born in 1989, and attempted an attack on a woman days earlier.

But it remains unclear if the cops have got the right man, or if the stabber still walks free among the inhabitants of Petrozavodsk.

New BBC drama Bodyguard has swept the nation with its gripping first two episodes, which aired Sunday and Monday night respectively.

The central plot of Line of Duty writer Jed Mercurio’s show is the complex relationship between Home Secretary Julia and her new personal protection officer and bodyguard David Budd.

The pair’s electric chemistry has had viewers glued to screens throughout, so it may surprise many to learn the actors were once in such a risqué film together called Complicity.

Richard, 32, was only 13 years old at the time, and played a young version of murderer Andy.

Conversely Keeley, who is now 42, was 24 when she filmed a completely naked sex scene as Yvonne with Jonny Lee Miller, who played lead Cameron Colley.

Pictures of the scene show Keeley writhing on top of her co-star, as her longer blonde locks feel across her face.

Viewers can even see the actress’s full frontal body when she enters what appears to be Cameron’s bedroom.

Teasing her romantic partner, Yvonne tilts her head suggestively before teasing her curves in front of the tattooed hunk.

The pair can then be seen sharing a steamy bubble bath together.

The little-known film introduced Keeley and Richard in 2000, but it turns out the English and Scottish actors didn’t even remember the occasion.

In a report from The Sun, Keeley said recently: “It was quite a funny moment when I realised I’d worked with Richard when he was a child.”

Bodyguard is a six-part drama set in Westminster Houses of Parliament, following a series of horrific terror attacks.

A new theory is now circling Julia is hiding a terrible secret about orchestrating the incidents in a bid to set in motion a new leadership challenge to become the next Prime Minister.

David suffers from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and secretly blames his charge for her controversial actions within the government, but his complex feelings have led to the pair entering into their own sexual relationship.

Some fans believe David’s decisions are all leading to an almighty conclusion which will see the character either kill or injure the Home Secretary in an attempt to remove her from power.

Sharing her enthusiasm, for the intense role, Keeley also told The Daily Mail she owes the opportunity to executive producer Jed.

She revealed: “It was Jed casting me in Line Of Duty that gave me a great platform for other roles.

“And this was very good timing because I’d just finished The Durrells, so to do something like Bodyguard which is the complete opposite is brilliant.”

Bodyguard continues Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.

One of the memorable aspects of the David Fincher-produced serial killer drama Mindhunter is the incredible performance of Cameron Britton. Britton plays real-life serial killer Ed Kemper, and his work on the show is chilling and attention-grabbing. In a new Mindhunter video, Britton shows us his transformation into the character.

I love Netflix’s Mindhunter for many reasons (it’s impeccably directed; has great writing and pacing; it’s an inherently fascinating show), but one of the biggest standouts of season 1 was the performance of Cameron Britton. I was completely unaware of Britton’s work, and watching him play serial killer Edmund Kemper on the show was something of a revelation. He fully embodied the character, and found a way to perfectly balance both humor and creepiness. This new Mindhunter video features Britton getting into character, and it’s pretty damn great.

The real Edmund Kemper (who is still alive, and is currently incarcerated in the California Medical Facility), killed 10 people, including his grandparents and his mother. Yet one of the most remarkable things about Britton’s performance is the way he makes Kemper sort-of likable. FBI profiler Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff), the main character of Mindhunter, comes to like Ed – and so does the audience, by extension. But in the last episode, Holden (and the audience) see what a mistake that is, as Kemper’s genial attitude gives way to something terrifying.

Deadline asked Britton about trying to approach the character from a place of empathy, and Britton replied that it wasn’t easy:

“As actors, we’re supposed to never judge our characters, but I had a lot of trouble doing that. I found that the way to make him empathetic to audiences was to play him as someone who’s pretending they’re empathetic. I think the Kemper character wears a mask constantly. He’s sort of practiced this character he’s invented. It’s sort of a character within a character that wants you to feel sorry for him.”

In regards to Britton’s performance, producer and director David Fincher said:

“One of the things that was critical [came to me] when we did a read-through of the first three episodes…‘Make sure Cameron doesn’t talk to anyone. He can’t fraternize [with anyone]. I don’t want this to be a social thing. He has to literally come from Pluto and be in the show.’ He can’t be indoctrinated into what anyone else is up to. It has to be that this guy shows up, he’s got all the time in the world — 13 life sentences — and he’s going to tell you what you want to know. During the read-through, it was [clear] that if we can get that on film, we’re going to be fine.”

Serial, the podcast that became a cultural phenomenon, has slightly faded from view since its 2014 debut. But the subject of the first season of the podcast, Adnan Syed, is still awaiting a new trail. Syed’s story will now get the HBO treatment courtesy of a new documentary series – The Case Against Adnan Syed.

In 1999, 18-year-old Baltimore County high school student Hae Min Lee was murdered. Her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed was eventually convicted of the crime, despite a wealth of evidence and speculation that might prove his innocence. You’re likely familiar with this story, because it was the subject of the first season of the hugely popular podcast Serial. The podcast, hosted by Sarah Koenig, was such a watershed moment that it actually lead a judge to grant Adnan Syed a post-conviction relief, setting aside the original conviction and calling for a new trial. Now, as Syed awaits his new trail, the story of his case and possibly wrongful conviction will be the subject of a new HBO documentary series,The Case Against Adnan Syed.

Here’s the breakdown of the show directly from HBO:

In production since 2015, THE CASE AGAINST ADNAN SYED closely re-examines the events leading up to Hae Min Lee’s disappearance, from high school romance, forbidden love and cultural conflict, to the aftermath of her disappearance, the original police investigation and the present day, when Syed awaits a new trial. Presenting new discoveries, as well as groundbreaking revelations that challenge the state’s case, and featuring exclusive access to Syed, the defense team, the Syed family, friends and teachers of Hae Min Lee and Adnan Syed, and members of City of Baltimore law enforcement, the series traces how the rush to justice and Syed’s conviction in 2000 raised more questions than answers about what happened to Hae Min Lee, underscoring the instability of memory and conflicting eyewitnesses.

This sounds fascinating overall. The series might also serve as a stark reminder that while the rest of the world has seemingly moved on from the first season of Serial, the story still continues on for the people directly involved. Syed has already served 18 years in jail for a crime he might not have committed, and now he awaits a new trail. Director Amy Berg “has been closely following [Syed’s family and his lawyers] efforts to obtain justice, with the outcome still to be determined — and possibly shaped by the investigation pursued within the series itself.”

As a somewhat trivial side-note, the series will feature music from Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, which is great news for soundtrack fans.

There’s no date yet set for the debut of the four-part documentary.
