Serbia has expelled six Croatian football fans who were caught stealing from a gas station near Belgrade while traveling to a game in Bulgaria, also slapping them with three-year entry bans.

The Hajduk Split fans were arrested last week for stealing beer, cigarettes and toys from the station near Belgrade while part of a group making their way to watch a UEFA Europa League qualification game against Slavia Sofia, AP reports.

Serbian media also showed pictures of the fan group’s name, Torcida, written on a wall at the gas station along with a ‘U’ sign associated with the World War II pro-Nazi “Ustasha” fighters.

Police detained 28 fans as they were returning from the game. A further 14 supporters received 15-day jail terms and one-year entry bans, while others were fined for smaller offenses, according to AP.

Row between Serbia & Kosovo slowing European clocks by 6 minutes https://briefnews.eu/row-between-serbia-kosovo-slowing-european-clocks-by-6-minutes/ https://briefnews.eu/row-between-serbia-kosovo-slowing-european-clocks-by-6-minutes/#respond Tue, 13 Mar 2018 20:05:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/row-between-serbia-kosovo-slowing-european-clocks-by-6-minutes/

Millions of clocks across Europe are running more than six minutes late because of diplomatic tensions between Serbia and Kosovo. The situation is so bad it is literally impacting the European electrical grid.

Unlike normal wall clocks and watches, which keep time using quartz crystals, electric clocks use the frequency of the power grid to keep time. Europe’s huge interconnected network, which spans from Spain to Turkey and from Poland to The Netherlands, is run at a frequency of 50 Hz, or 50 cycles per second.

Supply and demand can cause the frequency to rise and fall fractionally, but it always averages out to 50 Hz. If you’re really interested you can actually watch the grid frequency live on Swissgrid’s website.

Clocks that rely on the mains for power take advantage of this regularity to keep themselves accurate. However, since January, clocks across Europe have lost a staggering six minutes and it’s all because of a political dispute between the two Balkan countries, which is having a knock-on effect throughout the entire interconnected 25-country network.

“The power deviations are originating from the control area called Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro (SMM block) and specifically Kosovo and Serbia,” the European Network of Transmission System Operators (ENTSO-E) said in a press release that revealed the problem earlier this month.

The dispute centers around a disagreement between Serbia and Kosovo over who has to pay for the upkeep of a power plant in Kosovo. It has caused the average grid frequency to fall to 49.996 Hz, which may not sound like much but it is enough to make the clocks lose more than six minutes over the last eight weeks.

“The political disagreements opposing the Serbian and Kosovar authorities have led to the observed electricity impact. If no solution can be found at political level, a deviation risk could remain,” ENTSO-E concluded. It remains unclear who will pay for the loss of power, which amounts to more than 113-gigawatt hours.

Row between Serbia & Kosovo slowing European clocks by 6 minutes https://briefnews.eu/row-between-serbia-kosovo-slowing-european-clocks-by-6-minutes-2/ https://briefnews.eu/row-between-serbia-kosovo-slowing-european-clocks-by-6-minutes-2/#respond Tue, 13 Mar 2018 20:05:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/row-between-serbia-kosovo-slowing-european-clocks-by-6-minutes-2/

Dragic leads Serbia to first Euro title https://briefnews.eu/dragic-leads-serbia-to-first-euro-title/ https://briefnews.eu/dragic-leads-serbia-to-first-euro-title/#respond Mon, 18 Sep 2017 00:38:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dragic-leads-serbia-to-first-euro-title/ SLOVENIA won its first European basketball championship on Sunday, defeating Serbia 93-85 in Istanbul behind 35 points by Goran Dragic.

Dragic, the Miami Heat guard who was voted MVP of the tournament after the game, watched the final four minutes from the bench due to cramp. He had been visibly tiring, missing all three shots and the one free throw he took in the final quarter.

With Dragic out, Serbia briefly took the lead at 79-78, and again at 82-80 with 3:37 to go. But Slovenia, which had upset pre-tournament favourite Spain 92-72 in the semi-finals, refused to fold.

It went on a 12-0 run, during which guard Klemen Prepelic scored the go-ahead basket, 84-82, with 2:20 to go. After a balanced first quarter, which ended with Serbia 22-20 ahead, Dragic scored 20 of Slovenia’s 36 points in the second quarter to help give it a 56-47 halftime lead.

“We gave them a lot of transition points. They brought the NBA speed on the floor,” Serbia coach Aleksandar Djordjevic said.

“We are an up-tempo team … the importance of the game shouldn’t change what we do,” said Slovenia’s Serb coach, Igor Kokoskov.

Djordjevic responded by taking out his 2.21-meter (7-foot-3) centre Boban Marjanovic of the Detroit Pistons in favour of more mobile players, who managed to slow down the pace in the third quarter at the 16,000-seat Sinan Erdem arena. Dragic still managed to score nine points and Slovenia stayed ahead, 71-67, but lost young star Luka Doncic with a sprained ankle.

Bogdan Bogdanovic, who is set to join the Sacramento Kings next season, led Serbia with 22 points.

Kokoskov, also the assistant coach for the Utah Jazz, gave a nod to his boss – coach Quin Snyder: “He is my dear friend, my boss. He told me ‘Be prepared for the press conference and say something deep and smart.’ Well, I can’t say anything.”

Dragic may be a nine-year NBA veteran but Kokoskov, the first European to be a full-time assistant coach in the league, has spent 17 seasons there, after a brief stint at college level.

He and Dragic worked together at the Phoenix Suns for four seasons (2008-11 and 2012-13) Earlier, Spain defeated Russia 93-85 to take third place, with 51 points coming from the Gasol brothers, Pau (26) and Marc (25). Alexey Shved led Russia with 18.

Serbia limits sale of land to foreigners https://briefnews.eu/serbia-limits-sale-of-land-to-foreigners/ https://briefnews.eu/serbia-limits-sale-of-land-to-foreigners/#respond Tue, 29 Aug 2017 11:03:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/serbia-limits-sale-of-land-to-foreigners/

Serbia has passed a law restricting EU citizens from buying arable land in the country. The government said it wants to protect local farmers and prevent foreigners from taking over natural resources.

The law requires EU citizens to live in Serbia for at least ten years before purchasing land; with plot sizes limited to two hectares. They should farm land as a lessee for at least three years before buying it, and a seller must first offer it to the state. The rules prohibit the sale of land close to military facilities and in national parks.

Foreign companies can buy farmland through local subsidiaries.

“Without the restrictions, we would be the only country to open land sales before becoming a member’’ of the EU; Agriculture Minister Nedimovic was cited as saying by Bloomberg. He added it was in the “national interest’’ to keep agricultural land locally owned, citing measures by other countries that are already members or seeking to join.

The restrictions come just days before Serbia is to open the market under the 2008 Stabilization and Association Agreement signed with the EU. The deal was inked when Serbs thought they would join the bloc within several years. President Aleksandar Vucic is looking to prepare the country for EU entry by 2020.

Serbia is the only country that has started liberalizing the agricultural land market and permitting sales to foreigners before joining the European Union.

Other countries opened up land sales after they joined the EU, while many even had a transition period of a few years. For example, Croatia managed to get a seven year grace period and Poland 12 years.

EU officials have repeatedly claimed foreign investment should not be viewed with suspicion while it did not open the door for EU citizens to buy land without any limitations but could bring new technology and know-how, helping to improve the competitiveness of Serbia’s agriculture.

However, farmers were raising concerns and calling for restrictions. In 2014, residents of the Serbian village of Kula made a formal complaint against a UAE company, Al Rawafed Agriculture, which was trying to acquire land. Kula residents wanted the contract revoked, saying they would lose their livelihoods otherwise.

Canada closes out 1st weekend of World League volleyball with loss to Serbia https://briefnews.eu/canada-closes-out-1st-weekend-of-world-league-volleyball-with-loss-to-serbia/ https://briefnews.eu/canada-closes-out-1st-weekend-of-world-league-volleyball-with-loss-to-serbia/#respond Sun, 04 Jun 2017 22:02:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canada-closes-out-1st-weekend-of-world-league-volleyball-with-loss-to-serbia/

The Canadian men’s volleyball team closed out their first weekend of FIVB World League action this season with a 3-1 loss to Serbia on Sunday.

Canada fell behind 2-0, but took the third set before Serbia eventually secured the win in the fourth.

Canada’s record stands at 2-1 after the first phase of the preliminary round.

This is the Canadians’ first international action under Stephane Antiga, who was hired as head coach in December, and first since they finished fifth at last summer’s Rio Olympics — their first appearance in 24 years.

Canada upset the United States in their second match of the weekend on Saturday, and kicked off the season on Friday with a win over Belgium.

The FIVB World League is the premier annual men’s volleyball tournament with a total of 36 participating teams in 2017.

The 36 teams have been split into three groups of 12 teams and will play the preliminary round in a pool format over three weeks, before the best teams gather for the finals in each group.

Due to their strong play last season, Canada has been promoted to the top tier in this year’s event, known as Group 1.

The preliminary round continues for Canada with a series of matches in Bulgaria from June 9-11.

Serbia warns of new Balkan war if Albania unites with Kosovo https://briefnews.eu/serbia-warns-of-new-balkan-war-if-albania-unites-with-kosovo/ https://briefnews.eu/serbia-warns-of-new-balkan-war-if-albania-unites-with-kosovo/#respond Sat, 22 Apr 2017 18:27:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/serbia-warns-of-new-balkan-war-if-albania-unites-with-kosovo/

A senior Serbian government official warned that another war may break out in the Balkans if Albania tries to establish a union with the breakaway region of Kosovo, urging the West to denounce the plan.

Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic said that the mooted unification between Albania and Kosovo “will remain only wishful thinking,” and called on the EU to react. “If I said that all Serbs should live in one state, I would be hanged from a flagpole in Brussels,” Vucic added.

Earlier this week, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said an interview with Politico he cannot rule out a union between Albania and the breakaway province of Kosovo – formerly part of Yugoslavia – if the country’s EU membership bid is off the agenda.

Such an alliance with Kosovo was not his own wish “but a possible alternative to the closed door of the European Union,” Rama said.

“There is a lack of understanding, or a lack of vision in not realizing that this region needs Europe, but Europe needs this region too,” the prime minister said.

Responding to Rama’s remarks, Aleksandar Vulin, a Serbian government minister, said he expects the EU and NATO to dismiss such statements, otherwise another war in the Balkans may break out. Vulin said that a new war in the turbulent Balkans would also involve Macedonia and Montenegro – countries with sizeable ethnic-Albanian diasporas.

Serbia remains wary of a union between Kosovo and Albania, fearing it would trigger a new upheaval in the region which slid into bloody ethnic war in the 1990s as Yugoslavia was torn apart.

In 1999, NATO bombed Yugoslavia in response to what the alliance said was ethnic cleansing of the Muslim population of Kosovo. The province seceded from Serbia in 2008, but its political status and the formal declaration of independence remain questionable under international law.

Most EU member states welcome the secession of Kosovo, but Russia reacted with condemnation, saying the unilateral action creates upheaval in the Balkans. Serbia, for its part, does not recognize Kosovo as an independent entity as well.

Kosovo is now split into seven administrative districts and 38 municipalities, following the 2013 Brussels Agreement which sought to form new Serb-populated municipalities. The Albanian-controlled government sits in Pristina, with the Serbian minority occupying Mitrovica and adjacent municipalities.
