The Best Title Sequences of 2021

In a year that felt very much like a run-on of 2020, many of us found solace and joy in screen-based arts and entertainment. Art of the Title’s eighth annual list of the year’s top 10 title sequences celebrates the cream of the crop of motion-based graphic design from among film, television, festivals and conferences. This year, the panel chose its top titles from among work completed not just in 2021 but also 2019 and 2020 as many studios pushed release dates back, hoping for an ease in pandemic restrictions.

As with 2020, we reached out to our community to pull in new voices and to expand the team that calls the shots for the Top 10 Title Sequences of the Year.

Chosen by Art of the Title’s panel of experts

The panel for 2021 includes: Dan Boland, art director, The Price Is Right; Briar Levit, designer and educator; Dorca Musseb, director and animator; Norman Wong, director and photographer; Aleysa Young, director; plus Art of the Title’s Editor-in-Chief Lola Landekic and founder Ian Albinson.

The list below includes title sequences that were painstakingly modeled, animated, painted, composited, illustrated, torn and pasted, shot, acted and typeset by teams large and small all around the world, with budgets modest and mighty, in state-of-the-art facilities and in home studios. So sit back, relax and enjoy some of the most interesting and innovative work to hit screens in 2021.

10. The Politician

CATEGORY: TV
Created by Elastic

Netflix’s The Politician is a new comedy-drama-sometimes-musical from the team behind Glee. It’s an appropriately off-the-wall look at American politics and governance in the vein of Alexander Payne’s Election (1999), a satire that explores the state of play through the microcosm of high school. Enter Payton Hobart (Ben Platt), a young politician who will stop at nothing to become president… of his Santa Barbara, California high school. Does he actually want to lead his classmates to something greater or is this just…

Final Destination: The Title Sequences (2000) https://briefnews.eu/final-destination-the-title-sequences-2000/ https://briefnews.eu/final-destination-the-title-sequences-2000/#respond Fri, 02 Sep 2022 18:16:03 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/final-destination-the-title-sequences-2000/ Final Destination: The Title Sequences

For most successful horror film franchises, the river to box-office gold runs crimson with the blood of gleefully slaughtered teens. Nowhere is this more evident than in the Final Destination series, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2020. Over a ten-year period and five films (with a reboot on the way), the franchise raked in over $ 650 million at the box office for New Line Cinema, with a total kill count of 496; pretty decent numbers for a series lacking a corporeal villain. In the Final Destination universe, there’s no Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, or Ghostface – instead, the teen-murdering Big Bad is Death itself.

The standard Final Destination plot is repeated like a 12-bar blues pattern, with some variations. A stereotypical all-American teenage protagonist has a premonition of a disaster, usually involving a large-scale mechanical or infrastructural malfunction, and manages to escape with a group of bystanders only to watch, helplessly, as the disaster occurs and kills many others. The group realizes they’ve somehow cheated “death’s design” – but not for long, as the survivors get picked off one by one in increasingly complex death sequences. In the words of the mortician Bludworth, played by a scene-chewing Tony Todd in three of the films: “Disrespecting the design could initiate a horrifying fury that would terrorize even the Grim Reaper – and you don’t even want to fuck with that mack daddy.”

This franchise also bears another distinctive feature: its title sequences. For each Final Destination movie, the title sequence serves as a premonition and small taste of the carnage to come, using symbolism, editing and sound to create an ominous sense of doom and inevitability. As the franchise moved into its fourth and fifth films (and into 3D), the title sequences became increasingly striking and creative vehicles for fan service: high-concept mini-movies providing visual callbacks to the most gruesome deaths, designed to get the audience riled up and hungry for bloodshed. This is the title sequence at its finest: evolving meta-narrative devices that display an awareness of audience expectations, providing reverent nods to the history and possibilities of genre cinema.

Final Destination (2001)

The first film in the FD franchise was conceived as an X-Files episode script by Jeffrey Reddick, featuring Dana Scully’s brother as the hapless character who has the initial premonitions of a plane crash. Reddick worked the script into a feature film and passed it on to X-Files writers Glen Morgan and James Wong, who rewrote the script with Wong attached to direct.

Alex Browning (Canadian heartthrob Devon Sawa) is seated on a plane, embarking on a class trip to Paris when he has a horrifying premonition: shortly after takeoff, Flight 180 will explode. He snaps awake…

The human genome sequence, first published in 2001, has some important information missing. The latest version of it, called GRCh38, has a monstrous 3.1 gigabases of information—but that’s still not enough. A letter published in Nature Genetics this week finds that the reference genome is missing a colossal 10 percent of the genetic information found in the genomes of hundreds of people with African ancestry—information that also appears in other human populations.

Get the reference

The “human genome” is in fact assembled from the genomes of just a handful of people, with the majority of GRCh38 coming from just one person. It’s not a snapshot of what’s in human DNA so much as a kind of template and roadmap, giving a sense of what’s in there and allowing comparisons between individuals and the “reference genome.”

We’ve known this is a limitation and have been making constant additions to the reference genome, which has improved its ability to represent the huge range of variation that’s present in modern humans. But because its source is so limited, write the authors of this week’s letter, so is its usefulness: “In recent years, a growing number of researchers have emphasized the importance of capturing and representing sequencing data from diverse populations.”
