  • Instagram is launching Direct, a standalone, messaging-focused app.
  • The service essentially takes the main Instagram app’s messaging features and packs them into a separate experience, which will seamlessly communicate with the main, feed-oriented app.
  • Direct is now in testing in just a few countries, and it’s unclear if and when it will see a broader rollout.

Instagram is spinning out its Direct messaging feature into its own separate app, The Verge first reported.

The new standalone app is reportedly just a test, for now, and will start rolling out today for iOS and Android users in six test countries: Chile, Israel, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, and Uruguay.

The new app’s structure feels a lot like Snapchat: When users open it, the camera pane will open, emphasising the app’s focus on creating new material (photos and videos) to share. The camera itself is identical to Instagram’s, but there are four new, exclusive filters.

An account and settings option will live to the camera’s left, while swiping the other way will present you with the list of chats, exactly as it works on Instagram’s main app now.

When users install the new Direct app, Instagram will automatically stop displaying chats; a swipe to the left will present you with a swift animation that brings you straight into Direct, while doing the same from Direct’s inbox will send you back to Instagram.

The move feels strikingly similar to what parent company Facebook did when it separated the messaging experience outside the social network’s main app three years ago.

“We want Instagram to be a place for all of your moments, and private sharing with close friends is an important part of that,” Hemal Shah, an Instagram product manager, told The Verge.

“Direct has grown within Instagram over the past four years, but we can make it even better if it stands on its own. We can push the boundaries to create the fastest and most creative space for private sharing when Direct is a camera-first, standalone app.”

Facebook Messenger, which started its journey with 500 million users and a wave of 1-star reviews, now sits at 1.3 billion users, and ratings have improved up to a 3-star average.

As a messaging-first experience, Direct becomes Facebook’s third service of its kind, beyond the aforementioned Messenger and WhatsApp.

In the past few years, WhatsApp has remained a relatively unchanged, bare-bones messaging app, while Messenger has become much more, transforming into a platform of its own: Bots, payment options, phone calls, and even games have now found a home in Messenger.

Instagram calls Direct a camera-first messaging service, but it’s still unclear what path it is going to take (if it gets out of this experimental phase at all).

The idea of the scheme is to allow partners to vent their arguments and views in neutral territory without racking up hefty lawyer fees.

Couples will check in to a hotel and stay in separate rooms while they settle their affairs and seal their divorce, then officially split three months later.

The single catch is that the idea only works for couples who are friends or are on good terms with each other.

The Divorce Hotel’s creator David Leckie says a couple got de-hitched at an undisclosed hotel in York last month and believes the idea will take off.

Mr Leckie said the anonymous pair mediated terms of their divorce while watching a rugby match together and having a “last supper” before saying their final goodbyes.

He said: “If couples want to use the Divorce Hotel they obviously can’t be wanting to throw furniture at each other. Both have got to want a positive outcome for each other – people have got to want to move on in an amicable fashion.”

The trained mediator and counsellor brought the concept to Britain in March following its success in the US.

He believes there is a demand for “divorcing in a positive manner” – but admits English law does not make it easy and tends to encourage “the blame game”.

At Divorce Hotel, which uses a host of undisclosed venues, couples will already arrive with their affairs in order and willing to get down to the legal separating straight away.

Mr Leckie, who has worked in the field for 25 years, says the idea of the couple being in the hotel helps them mediate terms without distractions of other family members.

He said: “This is really good for people who want to divorce efficiently, effectively and non-acrimoniously. Divorce can turn the most loving relationship into the most hurtful.”

Over the weekend couples will work with a mediator and lawyer to an agreed budget – coasting between £6,000 and £10,000 depending on the complexities.

The paperwork is usually finalised over the weekend and be sent to the courts, with the divorce coming through three months later.

The couple who attended the Britain’s first ever Divorce Hotel and wished to remain anonymous said they came away happy from the experience.

They had been happily married for 24 years and had adult children, but had grown apart and wished to separate – but remain friends.

The wife said: “I don’t feel sad. The whole process means closure to the marriage – but not closure to the relationship.”

The couple’s experience at Divorce Hotel was a highly positive one as they spent one afternoon watching the rugby together and a final meal as husband and wife.

The husband added: “It was the first meal of our new relationship. I feel our new relationship with be a positive one.”

Fifteen couples have since asked to seek his help at the hotel and is looking to roll out the divorce carpet across the UK.

With almost half of British marriages ending in divorce, David believes many couples wish to separate in a civil, non-judgemental way – sharing the spirit of Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay’s Chris Martin who described their separation as “conscious uncoupling.”
