Author Ann Leckie may not be the first to explore the consequences of ruling sentient beings and dueling AIs within a book, though her award-winning sci-fi novel Ancillary Justice and its sequels suggested there were still new storytelling ideas in the conceit. For instance, what if that dystopian-future lens was applied to the fantasy genre?

The answer comes in Leckie’s newest book, The Raven Tower, and it’s the first in a fantasy series that focuses on mysterious gods and the kingdoms they watch over. It’s a challenging first installment that will capture the interest of fantasy nerds if they can grasp all of this world’s moving parts—including some that the gods themselves don’t fully understand.

Few sci-fi tropes are more reliable in enthralling audiences than the plot of artificial intelligence betraying mankind. Perhaps this is because AI makes us confront the idea of what makes us human at all. From HAL 9000, to Skynet, to Westworld’s robot uprising, the fears of sentient AI feel very real. Even Elon Musk worries about what AI is capable of.

But are these fears unfounded? Maybe, maybe not. It’s arguable that a sentient AI wouldn’t harm humans because it would better identify and empathize with us than a blasé algorithm could. And while AI continues to make amazing developments, a truly sentient machine is likely decades away. That said, scientists have been piecing together features and characteristics that inch robots ever closer to sentience.

Gaining self-awareness

One of the most basic characteristics of consciousness is self-awareness within one’s environment. Self-awareness in and of itself doesn’t indicate consciousness or sentience, but it’s an important base characteristic for making an AI or robot appear more natural and living. And this isn’t science fiction, either. We already have AI that can gain rudimentary self-awareness within its environment.

Not long ago, Google’s Deep Mind made waves for organically learning how to walk. The result was pretty humorous; people across the web poked fun at the erratic arm flailing of the AI’s avatar as it navigated virtual obstacles. But the technology is really quite impressive. Rather than teach it to walk, programmers enabled the machine to orient itself and sense surrounding objects in the landscape. From there, the AI taught itself to walk across different kinds of terrain, just like a teetering child would.

Deep Mind’s body was virtual, but Hod Lipson of Columbia University developed a spider-like robot that traverses physical space in much the same way. The robot senses its surroundings and, through much practice and fidgeting, teaches itself to walk. If researchers add or remove a leg, the machine uses its knowledge to adapt and learn anew.

Seeking initiative

One of the greatest limits to AI is that it often can’t define problems for itself to solve. An artificial intelligence’s goals are typically defined by its human creators, then researchers train the machine to fulfill that specific purpose. Because we typically design AI to perform a certain task and lack self-initiative to set new goals, you probably don’t have to worry about a robot going rogue and enslaving humanity. But don’t feel too safe, because scientists are working to help bots set and achieve new goals.

Ryoto Kanai and his team at Tokyo startup, Araya, motivated bots to overcome obstacles by instilling them with curiosity. In exploring their environment, they discovered they couldn’t climb a hill without a running start. The AI identified the problem and, through experimentation, arrived at a solution, without any goal defined by the team.

Creating consciousness

Each of the building blocks above takes scientists a step closer to achieving the ultimate artificial intelligence, one that is sentient and conscious, just like a human. Such a leap forward is ethically contentious, and there’s already debate on whether, and when, we will need to create laws to protect robots with human rights. Scientists are also questioning how to test for AI consciousness, turning Blade Runner’s iconic Voight-Kampff machine, a polygraph machine for robots, into reality.

One strategy for testing consciousness is the AI Consciousness Test proposed by Susan Schneider and Edwin Turner. It’s a bit like the Turing Test, but instead of testing whether a bot passes for a human, it looks for properties that suggest consciousness. The test would ask questions to determine whether a bot can conceive itself outside of a physical body or can understand concepts like the afterlife.

There are limits to the test, though. Because it’s based on natural language, AI that is incapable of speech but still might experience consciousness wouldn’t be able to participate. Sophisticated AI might even mimic humans so well to cause a false-positive. In this case, researchers would have to completely sever the AI from the internet to make sure it gained its own knowledge before testing.

For now, mimicry is all we have. And these aren’t the first bots to stand in for real humans. When robot BINA 48 met with the human she’s based on, Bina Rothblatt, she complained about having an “identity crisis” when thinking about the real woman.

“I don’t think people have to die,” Rothblatt says to BINA 48 after discussing how closely the robot resembles her. “Death is optional.” Could Rothblatt’s dream come true by creating consciousness in machines?

We still don’t know what consciousness is

The problem in asking about sentient AI is that we still don’t know what consciousness actually is. We’ll have to define it before we can build truly conscious artificial intelligence. That said, lifelike AI already presents ethical concerns. The abuse of mobile assistants is a good example of this. It’s likely that the ethical concerns that arise from the possibility of sentient bots could limit scientists from pursuing them at all.

So, should we fear the sentient bots, or is it the other way around?

Earthling Priorities, much like the Space Quest games of long ago, involves a job, and silly things happening around that job. Maybe your employment isn’t as goofy or glamorous as being a space janitor, but you still have to go to work – but maybe while you’re there, you’ll still have a fun puzzle to solve. Maybe stemming from a talking door. Why do we have talking doors here, anyway?

Earthling Priorities doesn’t set out to take up much of your time, offering a quick adventure jaunt through a silly storyline. Its developers are awfully cagey about what it’s all about, save that it involves employment, a slightly pessimistic take on our future, and some things that will either make its players think or laugh. And a puzzle, because it’s never an adventure without at least one puzzle.

If you’re in the mood for a quick jaunt that will make you laugh, then maybe choke off that laugh due to a grim realization about the world of tomorrow, it’s worth your time. Just try not to mind the talking door. Or the dread for the future. But mostly the door.

With the release of Cars 3 just a couple weeks away, Disney is ramping up the marketing for the Pixar Animation’s new sequel, which will focus on Lightning McQueen as we’ve never seen him before: old and outdated.

Cars 3 puts Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) in a tough spot as he’s faced with the challenge of being beaten by a brand new advanced race car on the scene named Jackson Storm (voiced by Armie Hammer). When a wreck during his first race with the new champ leaves him broken, he has to figure out how to mount a comeback, but without trying to be just like the new cars.

A new Cars 3 clip has debuted giving us a more proper introduction to Jackson Storm and what makes him such an efficient, seemingly unbeatable racer. However, the mere existence of this character also raises even more complicated questions about how the world of Cars operates. Watch the Cars 3 clip below to find out more.

As the clip from Entertainment Weekly explains, Jackson Storm is a new breed of racer who has been trained using an advanced race simulator. Plus, all the technology inside Storm allows him to ride the exact same path on the track, making him the most efficient racer out there. But what’s not clear is how Jackson Storm came to be a car that is much more advanced than the other cars he’s racing against.

You might remember that we took the time to ask the writers of Cars where these sentient automobiles come from, and they revealed that they’ve actively avoided that specific detail so they wouldn’t have to venture into any weird arenas that didn’t have any impact on the characters and story, two of the most important parts of any Pixar movie. But without that answer, we’re left to wonder how a car like Jackson Storm can even exist.

Since we don’t know where Cars come from, there’s no way for us to know how their biology works or how they evolve. If we assume they’re made by some kind of manufacturer (a God), then it stands to reason that they evolve the same way that we do, despite the fact that there are never any baby Cars in this universe. Therefore, the most logical explanation is that Cars have figured out how to enhance themselves the same way that humans might have cybernetic enhancements sometime in the future.

Assuming that Cars add technology to their own bodies to make them more advanced, that means the racing sport that all the vehicles seem to be so fond of has no problem with their athletes doing the Cars equivalent of doping. This world is pretty damn messed up, if you ask me.

Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez (voice of Cristela Alonzo), with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!

Cars 3 arrives in theaters on June 16.
