The purchase is part of a plan to send two Saudi astronauts to the International Space Station.

  • Saudi Arabia plans to send its first female astronaut into space, Axiom confirmed to Insider.
  • The country bought two seats on a SpaceX ship as part of a plan to send Saudi astronauts to the ISS.
  • The astronauts will be the first from the nation to travel to space with a private company.

Saudi Arabia plans to send its first female astronaut to the International Space Station on board a SpaceX ship, Axiom, the company that made the deal, confirmed to Insider.

A representative for Axiom Space said the company was collaborating with the Saudi Space Commission to train two astronauts and prepare them to conduct research in space.

The purchase is part of a larger plan to send two Saudi astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS), three anonymous sources confirmed to Reuters.

The sources added that the deal with Houston-based Axiom Space, a private company, was signed earlier this year.

"Space belongs to all of humanity, which is one of the reasons Axiom Space is pleased to welcome our new partnership with the Saudi Space Commission to train and fly Saudi astronauts, including the first female Saudi astronaut," Michael Suffredini, Axiom Space's CEO, said at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Paris.

The two seats are on board a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, which will travel to the ISS, where the Saudi astronauts are expected to stay for about a week, per Reuters.

The astronauts will be the first from the nation to travel to space with a private company. The mission will be the second space trip arranged by Axiom, according to Reuters' sources.

Axiom operates missions to and from the ISS and is also building the first commercial destination in space, Axiom Station, according to its website. The company launched the first private astronaut mission to the ISS in April. The four-man civilian crew also traveled on a SpaceX Crew Dragon spaceship, per NASA.

Private space companies such as Axiom are infringing on a uniquely diplomatic position between the US and other nations, which was traditionally controlled by NASA, Reuters reported.

Earlier this month, Axiom announced it had signed a deal with Turkey's government to send the first Turkish astronaut to space.

Russian cosmonauts were also set to fly to the ISS with SpaceX under a new NASA deal with Russia's space agency, Reuters reported.

SpaceX and the Saudi Space Commission did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment made outside normal working hours.

On Friday afternoon, senior officials at NASA joined a teleconference to speak with reporters about the current plan to launch the Artemis I mission from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This will be the third attempt to get the massive Space Launch System rocket off the ground and boost the Orion spacecraft into lunar orbit for an approximately 40-day uncrewed test flight before returning to Earth.

The rocket is ready, officials said. During fueling tests and launch attempts NASA has been bedeviled by hydrogen propellant leaks, as the tiny molecule is difficult to handle and constrain at super-chilled temperatures. However, following a longer-than-expected, but ultimately successful propellant loading test on Wednesday, NASA engineers expressed confidence in their revamped fueling procedures.

NASA has also reached an accord with US Space Force officials to extend the battery life for the rocket’s onboard flight termination system. This left only weather as a potential constraint to a planned launch attempt for Tuesday, September 27, at 11:37 am EST (15:37 UTC). The problem is that weather now poses a significant threat to the schedule due to a tropical depression that will likely track toward Florida in the coming days. There is an 80 percent chance of unacceptable weather during the launch window.

Liz Cheney says Mike Pence was ‘essentially the president’ on January 6 as Trump refused to send reprieve https://briefnews.eu/liz-cheney-says-mike-pence-was-essentially-the-president-on-january-6-as-trump-refused-to-send-reprieve/ https://briefnews.eu/liz-cheney-says-mike-pence-was-essentially-the-president-on-january-6-as-trump-refused-to-send-reprieve/#respond Tue, 20 Sep 2022 02:39:47 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/liz-cheney-says-mike-pence-was-essentially-the-president-on-january-6-as-trump-refused-to-send-reprieve/ Donald Trump Mike Pence
Then-US President Donald Trump arrives with then- Vice President Mike Pence for a Make America Great Again rally at Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City, Michigan on November 2, 2020.

  • Liz Cheney in a searing Monday speech skewered Trump and members of the Republican Party.
  • Cheney suggested that Mike Pence was "essentially" the acting president on January 6, 2021.
  • "White House staff knew it, and so did every Republican and Democratic leader in Washington," she said.

GOP Rep. Liz Cheney delivered a searing indictment of former President Donald Trump and members of the Republican Party on Monday in one of her first speeches since her primary defeat last month.

Cheney this week gave the Walter Berns Constitution Day lecture at AEI, a center-right economic think tank in Washington DC, warning that America's freedom is in a perilous position and urging the country to hold Trump accountable for his role in the January 6 Capitol riot.

Cheney, as the top Republican on the House Select Committee investigating the insurrection, has long been one of the few outspoken GOP critics of Trump — a stance that ultimately cost her her congressional seat after Trump spent months propping up her Republican challenger.

But Cheney on Monday did not dwell on her political woes, opting instead to further rebuke Trump's actions, or lack thereof, on January 6, 2021.

"I hope you all heard the testimony in our select committee hearings of Pat Cipollone, corroborated by Cassidy Hutchinson and others on President Trump's White House staff," she said. "Testimony that President Trump was the only person who refused to respond to desperate calls for help, even from his own congressional allies. He refused to come to their aid."

Several witnesses, including Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the committee that they were puzzled by Trump's inaction as rioters stormed the US capitol on January 6.

In her speech on Monday, Cheney suggested that Trump's second-in-command, Mike Pence, stepped into his superior's role.

"If you watched our hearings closely, you understand that Vice President Mike Pence was essentially the president for most of that day," she said. "White House staff knew it, and so did every other Republican and Democratic leader in Washington."

After Trump assailed Pence on Twitter for refusing to reject Electoral College votes for President Joe Biden, rioters throughout the Capitol began chanting "hang Mike Pence." Hutchinson testified earlier this summer that Trump defended the insurrectionists' call for violence, saying that "Mike deserves it."

In his recent autobiography,  "So Help Me God," Pence wrote that he was not afraid, during the events of January 6, but angry.

"I was angry at what I saw, how it desecrated the seat of our democracy and dishonored the patriotism of millions of our supporters, who would never do such a thing here or anywhere else," Pence wrote.

According to "The Divider," a new book by Peter Baker of The New York Times and Susan Glasser of The New Yorker, Trump has said he would not pick Pence to be his running mate if he launches a 2024 campaign.

"It would be totally inappropriate" to pick Pence as his running mate, Trump said, according to the book. "Mike committed political suicide," the former told Glasser and Baker.

In her speech, Cheney also urged people to rewatch testimony from the committee's summer hearings and listen to what several of Trump's former officials said about the then-president's post-2020 actions while under oath.

"How could Trump's refusal to act, his betrayal or our Republic, of our Constitution, of our principles, come with no cost?" she said.

RELATED STORIES

Nothing could’ve prepared the remaining Amazing Race teams for this.

Wednesday’s two-hour showdown turned up the heat like never before, introducing the series’ first-ever mega leg, which kept teams on their toes with double the detours, roadblocks and distance. While everyone had his or her limits pushed to the max on this brutal Indian adventure, not one, but two Yields were used, launching some teams to the top and devastating another. Which duos got blood on their hands, and who ultimately was eliminated? Let’s take it from the top.

AND THEY’RE OFF | The teams’ next destination: Hyderabad, India. Hung and Chee tell us they’re done helping DeAngelo and Gary, but the footballers are still banking on the security of the alliance. Meanwhile, Eswar and Aparna, who were born in India before moving to the United States as children, are feeling pretty confident about possibly having the advantage on this one. The brother/sister combo find their clue first and learn they must smog-test three rickshaws before moving on. Not only must teams flag the rickshaws off the street, but they must also enter the vehicle’s details and test its emissions in hopes of getting approval from a smog technician.

DETOUR | Eswar and Aparna finish first and must then choose between delivering food orders or cracking a number puzzle. Since the siblings are both software engineers, they choose numbers, and are followed by Will and James, and the footballers. “This challenge was meant for us,” says Aparna, but is she speaking too soon?

On their way to the detour, Riley and Maddison vent their frustration about DeAngelo. “There’s been a lot of mutual help in our alliance with Chee, Hung and the boyfriends. Whereas with DeAngelo, there’s been a lot of take, take, take… they’ve almost been withholding information that could potentially help us.” Like Chee and Hung, these two seem over it, and refuse to help the footballers going forward.

As the volleyballers make their way to the detour, the footballers finish up and… how in holy hell are Kaylynn and Haley lost again! How is it possible that every. single. taxi driver they snag, regardless of what country they’re in, has no idea where to go? It’s been a rough Race for these two.

The boyfriends crack the code first and retrieve the next clue. At the next marker, teams have the option to use their Yields, and the guys pull the trigger on the sisters, who are still aimlessly driving in circles somewhere. (Was this a waste of a Yield? Why not pull the trigger on a bigger threat like, say, the footballers?)

Amazing Race Season 32 Episode 9 AparnaROADBLOCK | Teams must use an augmented reality interface to travel through a digital world and find three distinctive turbans. Then, they must find real men who are wearing the same headdresses. Eswar and Aparna and Gary and DeAngelo begin the roadblock, while the Blonde Bandits join Hung and Chee (who change detours) on the food-delivery task.

The two pairs of athletes destroy the roadblock and are off, but Hung and Chee make their deliveries and catch up to the pack. The first hour ends with the sisters finding out about their 20-minute delay, and since it’s a mega leg, we’re rolling right on through to: another detour!

DETOUR | This clue cannot be any more vague: “This or That.” Okaaay. For “This,” racers must push a cart of bracelets to a nearby store, and find the same set that a bride is wearing.

Eswar and Aparna select “That,” which requires teams to make molds of dentures, and then polish another pair to fit into a patient’s mouth. (Real talk: This is all kinds of gross, and I’d be OUT of there, ASAP!) While Chee and Hung bite down on “That,” the footballers and the boyfriends continue their search for needles in a haystack.

Riley and Maddison pull ahead, arriving at a palace where they hop a horse and carriage with some local socialites. At the leg’s second Yield op, they target Kaylynn and Haley, hoping to give their struggling alliance members, Hung and Chee, extra time.

ROADBLOCK | Teams must recreate place settings — including a fancy, folded napkin — on the palace’s 108-foot-long dining table. The items must be arranged down to the centimeter in order to pass the task. The volleyballers and the boyfriends decide not to reveal the ruler tip to Gary. “Now is when the Final 3 alliance with the beards, and Hung and Chee is going to start coming more towards the front,” says James. “The Mine 5, as of today, is officially dead.”

The sisters finally finish their dentures, and on the way out, one tells the camera, “If someone else Yields us, I’ll f–king slaughter them!” Welp…

PIT STOP | Riley and Maddison are the first to finish this super-ultra-mega-leg and land on Phil’s mat, winning a trip for two on a seven-day Caribbean cruise! Will and James clock in second, while Gary and DeAngelo place third. Despite their streak of luck this season, it has, indeed, run out: Kaylynn and Haley arrive last, and are eliminated from the race.

The sisters are finally gone! Will you miss them? And what are your thoughts on Gary and DeAngelo? Sound off in the Comments below!

“Look where you’re going,” the host declared as the passenger cart began to move with Andi still looking down the lens of the camera.

As he focussed on the direction he was driving, the vehicle began to sway from left to right, with Susanna speechless to what she was seeing.

“Does he know where the brakes are?” she asked, before going on to exclaim: “Oh my goodness,” whilst cupping her hands around her eyes to look away.

In the distance, the competition presenter could be heard voicing concern as the automobile continued to stay upright.

Piers Morgan reveals how he would solve Brexit – ‘Call EU’s BLUFF and send FARAGE’ https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-reveals-how-he-would-solve-brexit-call-eus-bluff-and-send-farage/ https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-reveals-how-he-would-solve-brexit-call-eus-bluff-and-send-farage/#respond Mon, 20 May 2019 18:47:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-reveals-how-he-would-solve-brexit-call-eus-bluff-and-send-farage/

The Good Morning Britain host grew increasingly frustrated with Remainer guest Kevin Maguire’s claims that parts of Brexit were “undeliverable”. Mr Morgan blasted back: “This is what the Remoaners always say. It’s undeliverable because we have a Remainer Prime Minister and a three-quarter Remain parliament.

“That’s why it’s undeliverable.”

The TV veteran went on to explain what he would do if it fell to him to deliver Brexit.

He said: “If I was Boris Johnson and I won the election to run the party and the country, I would immediately go straight to no deal.

“I’d call everyone’s bluff.

“No deal – bang. That’s where we’re going, we’re leaving.

“Then you watch. You watch what happens when you actually negotiate hardball.”

He added that he would send Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage “straight over” to the EU to conduct the negotiations.

Meanwhile, Theresa May is set to begin discussions with senior ministers on her proposed new “bold offer” to MPs in a final attempt to get her Brexit deal through Parliament.

The weekly meeting of the Cabinet on Tuesday is expected to sign off on a package of measures to be included in the forthcoming Withdrawal Agreement Bill (WAB) aimed at winning cross-party support.

However, there was widespread scepticism at Westminster that it will fare any better than her three previous failed attempts to get the Commons to pass the deal.

Following the collapse last week of cross-party talks with Labour aimed at reaching a common approach, Jeremy Corbyn said he had not yet seen anything new that would persuade him to support it.

It comes at the start of what looks likely to be another torrid week for the Prime Minister with the Conservatives braced for a hammering at the hands of Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party in the European elections on Thursday.

One weekend poll put them in a humiliating fifth place behind the Greens, with the results likely to exacerbate frustration in the party at the failure to leave the EU in March as planned.

Labour – which has been criticised for facing both ways on a second referendum – is also expecting a difficult result with the same poll showing them in third place behind the Liberal Democrats.

A Government source said the Withdrawal Agreement Bill – which is needed to ratify the deal with Brussels – would include new measures on protecting workers’ rights, an issue where agreement with Labour was said to have been close.

However, the source made clear the package would not just be aimed at Labour MPs but would seek to secure the widest possible support across the Commons.

It is expected to include provisions on future trade arrangements with the EU, on environmental protection, and on Northern Ireland, including the use of technology to avoid the need for border controls with the Republic.

Ministers will also consider whether to put any of the alternative approaches to indicative votes in the Commons to establish which, if any, can command a majority.

Coronation Street spoilers: Devastating news to send shockwaves through Weatherfield https://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-spoilers-devastating-news-to-send-shockwaves-through-weatherfield/ https://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-spoilers-devastating-news-to-send-shockwaves-through-weatherfield/#respond Mon, 12 Nov 2018 03:11:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/coronation-street-spoilers-devastating-news-to-send-shockwaves-through-weatherfield/

Abi Franklin (played by Sally Carman) is going to relapse in an upcoming episode of Coronation Street after being accused of sabotaging Michelle Connor’s (Kym Marsh) car.

The mechanic will turn to her vices – drink and drugs – to cope with the situation, but it leads to heartache.

When word gets out to local authorities that she has fallen back into her old habits, Abi is refused contact with her twins (Charlie and Lexi).

The mother-of-three is going to be told contact with the twins has been suspended due to her drug relapse.

The news will destroy Abi, as she has worked incredibly hard to straighten out her life and get off the booze and drugs.

Actress Sally Carman, who plays the recovering addict, said the news will come as a “blow” to the Weatherfield resident.

She said: “That’s a different kind of blow because it’s that thing where someone can’t quite believe their luck so they think that something will go wrong.

“It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy and that’s what has happened with her. When she gets that news she is devastated but she knows it is coming.”

With the twins temporarily out of reach, Abi will try her best to prevent her oldest child Seb (Harry Visinoni) from getting into trouble.

This week, Abi will find Seb trashing the flower shop after she tells him she plans to put the twins up for adoption.

Desperate to protect Seb, Abi will stop him in his track, but the commotion is heard by Ken Barlow (William Roache), who spots her and assumes she is responsible for the damage.

However, when the police arrive Seb runs into the back room, while Abi grabs a hand full of cash from the till to distract the officers.

She is arrested on the spot, but actress Sally says her character does not fear jail or punishment at that moment.

“After everything that has gone on, she is so down anyway so she is not bothered,” Sally explained.

“Part of her feels like she deserves it for being such a bad mother and doing what she has done because she doesn’t think much of herself.

“But the fact that she has saved her son from being arrested is keeping her on the right side of it.”

Speaking about her character’s need to look after Seb, she added: “With Seb, the best she can do for him is to protect him from a life like hers so this is her way of doing that.

“She doesn’t want him to go down because she has been to prison herself.”

The TV star concluded: “She can handle it and she does not want that for her son so she feels she is doing the right thing.”

Coronation Street continues tonight on ITV at 7.30pm and 8.30pm.

A US senator has proposed a privacy law that could issue steep fines to companies and send their top executives to prison for up to 20 years if they violate Americans’ privacy.

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore. announced a discussion draft of his Consumer Data Protection Act yesterday. The bill would establish new privacy rules that major companies must follow and establish fines and prison sentences big enough to make even the largest companies take notice.

Consumers would have the right to opt out of systems that share their data with third parties. Companies that don’t follow the proposed law could be fined up to 4 percent of annual revenue on their first offense. The FTC currently is unable to fine first-time corporate offenders, and “fines for subsequent violations of the law are tiny, and not a credible deterrent,” Wyden’s bill summary says.

While the Pentagon still has little clue about the composition of the so-called migrant caravans heading to the US from Central America via Mexico, the US Northern Command is willing to throw in more power to achieve their objective.

“I can tell you 5,239 is not the top line,” General Terrence O’Shaughnessy, Commander of US Northern Command told reporters on Tuesday. “What I can confirm is that there will be additional force over and above the 5,239.”

“The magnitude of that difference I don’t have an answer for now because we don’t know what that answer is,” the general added.

Operation Faithful Patriot commenced on Monday with the deployment of US military personnel to the southwestern border to help roughly 2,000 National Guardsmen protect American national security. The combined US government effort to stop migrant caravans from piercing the border includes fortifying the 2,000-mile stretch with razor wire fence, all while ensuring mass mobility of soldiers along the perimeter. Helicopters, planes, and drones are being deployed as part of the mission.

On Tuesday, “a little over 1,000” US soldiers were already in place in Texas, Gen. O’Shaughnessy said, noting that their presence will be beefed up to 1,800 in the coming days. “What you’ll also see over the upcoming days is we’re going to have similar movements to Arizona and California,” which will bring the number to over 5,200 troops.

The US soldiers which are being positioned with weapons, the general said, will undergo special training about the permitted use of force against illegals, noting that the rules for the interaction will be “consistent with CBP.”

“There could be incidental interaction between our military members and migrants or other personnel that might be in that area,” he told reporters. “The US military personnel … are going to have very clear guidance that we’ve given them, it’s the standard rules for the use of force.”

Currently, two caravans of migrants, including many families and unaccompanied minors, are making their way toward the United States. About 3,500 are being tracked in southern Mexico, while another group of roughly 3,000 is being formed at the Mexican-Guatemalan border.

‘This is an invasion, our military is waiting for you,’ Trump warns ‘migrant caravan’

President Donald Trump, who made the fight against illegals one of the highlights of his political career, on Monday called the migrant wave “an invasion,” stressing that US troops are anticipating their arrival.
