Senators press Twitter CEO to address whistleblower claims https://briefnews.eu/senators-press-twitter-ceo-to-address-whistleblower-claims/ https://briefnews.eu/senators-press-twitter-ceo-to-address-whistleblower-claims/#respond Tue, 13 Sep 2022 01:52:39 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/senators-press-twitter-ceo-to-address-whistleblower-claims/ The leaders of the Senate Judiciary Committee are pushing Twitter’s CEO Parag Agrawal to address allegations made by the company’s former head of security in a lengthy whistleblower complaint. In a new letter to Agrawal reported by CNN, the leaders of the committee pressed the CEO to address claims that Twitter’s security practices could harm national security, as well as other issues raised in Peiter “Mudge” Zatko’s complaint.

Up to now, Twitter has declined to address the majority of Zatko’s claims in any kind of detail, though the company’s lawyers attempted to portray him as a disgruntled former employee during a hearing in a Delaware court last week. The letter comes the day before Zatko is scheduled to appear at a Judiciary Committee hearing to publicly testify about his experience as Twitter’s head of security.

Agrawal was also “extended an invitation” to appear at the hearing, according to the letter, though he apparently declined the offer. A Twitter spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

In addition to national security concerns, Zatko also raised significant concerns regarding Twitter’s ability to counter misinformation and its handling of basic internal security. Zatko also alleges that Twitter misled the Federal Trade Commission and other regulatory agencies.

“These allegations raise serious concerns given Twitter’s significant role in the U.S. communications landscape and its global reach,” Senators Dick Durbin and Chuck Grassley write in the letter. It asks Agrawal to respond by September 26th.

The letter is sure to increase the pressure on Twitter, which is also in the midst of a messy legal battle with Elon Musk, who has been trying to get out of his $ 44 billion deal to buy the company. Last week, a judge said that Musk could add Zatko’s whistleblower complaint to his legal case.

  • A bipartisan group of 44 former US senators put together a letter to the current US Senate, saying the nation is “at an inflection point in which the foundational principles of our democracy and our national security interests are at stake.”
  • The senators addressed the letter to their colleagues and warned of an imminent and troubling intersection of national and international challenges, spurred in part by President Donald Trump’s turbulent first years in office.
  • They say that the Senate must stand up and help the nation face the tough times ahead.

A bipartisan group of former senators wrote an open letter in The Washington Post calling for the current Senate to be “steadfast and zealous guardians of our democracy.”

“As former members of the US Senate, Democrats and Republicans, it is our shared view that we are entering a dangerous period, and we feel an obligation to speak up about serious challenges to the rule of law, the Constitution, our governing institutions and our national security,” they wrote.

  • Senators from across party lines on Wednesday announced with a “high level of confidence” that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was “complicit” in the brutal killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in October.
  • Bipartisan senators introduced a measure calling for the crown prince to be “held accountable” for a number of human rights abuses, and put him at the helm of the “abhorrent” plot to execute Khashoggi.
  • Though the resolution is non-binding, the senators are hoping to spur the government and the international community to punish the crown prince.
  • The move pins lawmakers against Trump, who has doubled down on his defense of the Saudi crown prince this month, and said the US-Saudi relationship is “paramount” in his decision making.

Senators from across party lines on Wednesday announced with a “high level of confidence” that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was “complicit” in the brutal killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in October.

Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Ed Markey (D-MA), Todd Young (R-IN), and Chris Coons (D-DE) introduced a measure calling for the crown prince to be “held accountable” for a lengthy list of human rights abuses, including the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, the jailing of Saudi activists without charge, the ruthless detention and extortion of his critics.

US senators seek to stop weapons sales to Saudi Arabia over Yemen war, Khashoggi murder https://briefnews.eu/us-senators-seek-to-stop-weapons-sales-to-saudi-arabia-over-yemen-war-khashoggi-murder/ https://briefnews.eu/us-senators-seek-to-stop-weapons-sales-to-saudi-arabia-over-yemen-war-khashoggi-murder/#respond Thu, 15 Nov 2018 23:36:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-senators-seek-to-stop-weapons-sales-to-saudi-arabia-over-yemen-war-khashoggi-murder/ A newly proposed bill in the US Senate would suspend the sale of weapons to Saudi Arabia and block refueling of Saudi warplanes bombing Yemen, as punishment for the death of a Washington Post columnist.

A group of senators on the Foreign Relations Committee, led by Bob Menendez (D-New Jersey) and Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) introduced the “Saudi Arabia Accountability and Yemen Act of 2018.” It was sponsored by three Democrats and two Republicans.

Menendez, who is the top Democrat on the committee, said that sanctions against 17 Saudi nationals introduced earlier on Thursday by the Trump administration were “not enough” to ensure a credible investigation of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and pressure Riyadh into ending the war in Yemen.

“This legislation is an important way to hold Saudi Arabia accountable for various acts in Yemen as well as the death of Jamal Khashoggi,” said Graham.

“We are putting teeth behind these demands with regular oversight, sanctions and suspension of weapons sales and refueling support,” Menendez said.

The US currently supplies Saudi Arabia with billions of dollars’ worth of tanks, airplanes and ammunition, and offers in-flight refueling and other logistical support to the Saudi-led coalition operating in Yemen. Riyadh has waged war on its southern neighbor since March 2015, to overthrow the Houthi-led government, which Saudi Arabia accuses of being a proxy of Iran.

The bill introduced by Menendez and Graham would also impose US sanctions on anyone blocking humanitarian aid deliveries to Yemen, but also on anyone providing support to the Houthis.

Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist who lived in Turkey and was an outspoken critic of the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2. Turkey quickly accused the Saudis of murdering Khashoggi, which Riyadh spent weeks denying until it eventually blamed it on a “fight” inside the consulate.

Earlier on Thursday, the Senate voted 77-21 to kill a proposal by Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) to block US arms sales to Bahrain, another member of the Saudi coalition. Menendez led the opposition to Paul’s proposal, arguing that Bahrain is a “critical ally” of the US and hosts the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet, and that the sale of multiple rocket launchers and missile systems had nothing to do with the war in Yemen.

Senators call for FTC investigation into ads in children’s apps https://briefnews.eu/senators-call-for-ftc-investigation-into-ads-in-childrens-apps/ https://briefnews.eu/senators-call-for-ftc-investigation-into-ads-in-childrens-apps/#respond Tue, 13 Nov 2018 19:01:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/senators-call-for-ftc-investigation-into-ads-in-childrens-apps/

Last month, a study published in the Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics described just how prevalent advertising is in apps geared towards children, and its findings have now led three Senators to ask the FTC to investigate. Senators Ed Markey (D-MA), Tom Udall (D-NM) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) sent a letter to the commission today, citing the study’s findings and urging the FTC to act.

“The FTC has a statutory obligation to protect consumers from unfair and deceptive advertising practices. That responsibility is all the more urgent when the potential victims of such practices are children,” they wrote. “As parents increasingly permit kids to engage in online games and apps for entertainment and fun, it is imperative to ensure that these playtime options are compliant with existing laws.”

The study assessed 135 kids apps geared towards kids five years old or younger, and it found that 95 percent had at least one type of advertising. In one app, for example, players trying to treat sick animals are told that they can get more effective medicines if they watch an ad. In another, a character encourages players to put on clothing that has to be unlocked by an in-app purchase. The Senators said that the “manipulative nature” of these sorts of ads concerned them, as did the fact that over 93 percent of the apps billed as educational included advertising. They also took issue with apps characterized as free but required in-app purchases to fully enjoy.

Advertising isn’t the only issue that’s been brought up when it comes to apps for kids. In the past, such apps have been found to be improperly collecting children’s data, listening to what kids watch and serving up porn ads.

The lawmakers said that the examples included in the study “appear to constitute unfair and deceptive practices under Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act.” They asked the FTC to look into the study’s findings and requested a response to their letter by December 4th.

Ottawa Senators demand newspaper take down secret video of players https://briefnews.eu/ottawa-senators-demand-newspaper-take-down-secret-video-of-players/ https://briefnews.eu/ottawa-senators-demand-newspaper-take-down-secret-video-of-players/#respond Wed, 07 Nov 2018 21:20:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ottawa-senators-demand-newspaper-take-down-secret-video-of-players/

The Ottawa Senators are demanding that a major newspaper take down a secretly recorded video showing several players badmouthing the team's coaching staff.

In a letter to the Ottawa Citizen, lawyers for the team say the paper posted the video to its website knowing that it was secretly recorded by the driver of the Uber vehicle the players were riding in while on the road in Phoenix, Ariz.

The letter addressed to the newspaper's editor-in-chief says the video clearly violates the players' privacy and does not involve a matter of "genuine public interest."

The lawyers demand that the Citizen remove the video from its site, noting that YouTube has already done so on the grounds that it was recorded without the players' knowledge.

Senators chief operating officer Nicolas Ruszkowski says the team wants to ensure that people's reputations are not "impaired by voyeuristic journalism."

Neither the Ottawa Citizen nor parent company Postmedia Network Inc. immediately responded to a request for comment.

Senators players caught trash-talking team on video recording https://briefnews.eu/senators-players-caught-trash-talking-team-on-video-recording/ https://briefnews.eu/senators-players-caught-trash-talking-team-on-video-recording/#respond Tue, 06 Nov 2018 07:09:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/senators-players-caught-trash-talking-team-on-video-recording/

Ottawa Senators players who were caught on tape joking about and criticizing their team's defence in a video posted online are apologizing for their comments.

The Senators released a statement Monday night from Thomas Chabot, Dylan DeMelo, Matt Duchene, Alex Formenton, Chris Tierney, Chris Wideman and Colin White, who were shown talking about Ottawa’s ineffective penalty kill and mocking one of their coaches in a recording that apparently came from a camera mounted on the dash of an Uber driver’s van or SUV.

The players mocked assistant coach Martin Raymond, who handles the team's penalty-killing unit, in the five-minute clip that was recorded in Phoenix during Ottawa's west-coast road trip at the end of October.

"We want to apologize publicly to Marty Raymond, our teammates and coaches for our comments in Phoenix, Arizona on October 29," read the statement emailed to The Canadian Press.

"Our private conversation was recorded without our knowledge or consent. We're passionate about our team, and focusing on growing together. We are grateful for the support of our fans and organization. This is an important learning experience, and we will do better."

The Uber driver is heard asking what team the players play for near the beginning of the video and Wideman, seated in the passenger seat, replies: "Ottawa. If you can tell we're really pleased with our …." A player seated in the middle row of the vehicle finishes his sentence: "with our PK."

Duchene later adds that he "[hasn't] paid attention in three weeks" in Raymond's meetings.

"Here's the other thing, too. We don't change anything ever. So why do we even have a meeting?" he says in the clip.

The Senators are currently 29th in the league in penalty killing at 68.8 per cent.

Head coach Guy Boucher said in the same statement that the team has "every confidence in Marty Raymond's coaching, in the effort and determination of our team; and in the sincerity of our players' apology."

"We are now treating this as a team matter, and will be making no further comment to the media," Boucher added.

A Postmedia story Monday said the video was posted elsewhere online over the weekend and has since been deleted.

Uber Canada releases statement

Uber Canada's general manager Rob Khazzam said on his verified Twitter account on Monday night that "a video released by the media today of several Uber passengers being filmed without their consent while having a private discussion … is a clear violation of our terms of service."

"Filming or recording passengers without their consent is totally unacceptable and if reported/detected we will investigate," he added.

The video recording is the latest scandal for a team that's been riddled with them lately.

Negative headlines dogged the Senators last season, including a threat by owner Eugene Melnyk to move the team if ticket sales didn't improve. And in May, the wife of former captain Erik Karlsson filed an order of protection against Mike Hoffman's fiancee, claiming she had posted over 1,000 "negative and derogatory" comments about her on social media. Both Karlsson and Hoffman were traded in the off-season.

The Senators are 5-6-3 through their first 14 games this year.

US senators cry foul over Riyadh's 'insulting' Khashoggi story, say crown prince involved in death https://briefnews.eu/us-senators-cry-foul-over-riyadhs-insulting-khashoggi-story-say-crown-prince-involved-in-death/ https://briefnews.eu/us-senators-cry-foul-over-riyadhs-insulting-khashoggi-story-say-crown-prince-involved-in-death/#respond Sun, 21 Oct 2018 21:11:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-senators-cry-foul-over-riyadhs-insulting-khashoggi-story-say-crown-prince-involved-in-death/ US senators are speaking out against Saudi Arabia’s account of what happened to journalist Jamal Khashoggi, saying they believe the crown prince is responsible and calling Riyadh’s version of events “insulting.”

Speaking to CNN’s “State of the Union” program on Sunday, Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) didn’t hold back in saying who he believes is behind the Washington Post journalist’s death – Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.

“Do I think he did it? Yes, I think he did it,” Corker said.

“If he’s gone forth and murdered his journalist, he’s now crossed the line and there has to be a punishment and a price paid for that,” he continued, adding that he would like to see a “collective” response from Western countries if his hunch turns out to be true.

Meanwhile, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) is far from believing Riyadh’s claim that Khashoggi died in a “fistfight” in the Saudi embassy in Istanbul and that the crown prince had nothing to do with it.

“It’s insulting to anyone who’s analyzing this with any kind of intelligent background to think that a fistfight led to a dismemberment with a bone saw,” he told Fox News Sunday.

The senators’ comments come after their colleague Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said last week that the Saudi crown prince “had this guy murdered.”

“Nothing happens in Saudi Arabia without MbS [Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman] knowing it,” he said in an interview with Fox News.

“I’ve been their biggest defender on the floor of the United States Senate,” Graham said. “This guy is a wrecking ball. He had this guy murdered in a consulate in Turkey and to expect me to ignore it. I feel used and abused.”

Days later, Graham also took to Twitter to express his skepticism. “To say that I am skeptical of the new Saudi narrative about Mr. Khashoggi is an understatement,” he wrote.

US President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that he is also dissatisfied with the information that has been provided by Saudi Arabia, after initially having cut Riyadh a bit more slack. However, he still seems unwilling to scrap the $ 450 billion arms deal between the two countries, previously saying that it would be “very hurtful” to the US if it was canceled, citing the money and jobs it is bringing to the country.

Across the pond, European countries are equally speaking out, with the European Union, Germany, and France all calling for an in-depth probe into the death of the Washington Post journalist on Saturday. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas also stated that Berlin should not approve arms sales to Saudi Arabia until investigations are completed.

Khashoggi, who was a vocal critic of the Saudi royal family, was last seen when he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to get documents for his upcoming marriage. Turkey has claimed that a Saudi assassination squad killed him, while Riyadh said he died in a “fistfight” but has since stated that it doesn’t know what happened to him or where his body is.
