The new-look Reid Carruthers team is finding success in a hurry.

Carruthers, teaming up with longtime Winnipeg rival Mike McEwen, is off to the men's final of the Elite 10 after beating John Epping of Toronto on Saturday night in semifinal action.

The game went to a shootout and McEwen delivered the winning shot.

Carruthers will face Brad Gushue of St. John's in the men's final on Sunday. Gushue beat Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., in the other semi.

The women's final will be an all-European contest between Anna Hasselborg of Sweden and Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland.

Hasselborg downed Ottawa's Rachel Homan, while Tirinzoni knocked off Winnipeg's Jennifer Jones in the semifinals.

Originally a men's invitational, the Grand Slam series added a women's division to the Elite 10 this season.

The tournament uses a unique format.

Points are scored in match play by either counting two or more rocks (with the hammer) or stealing at least one rock (without the hammer).

Teams earn three points for a regulation win, two points for a shootout win and one point for a shootout loss. The top six teams overall, regardless of pools, qualified for the weekend playoffs.

The Elite 10 has three additional unique rules: Stopwatches are banned, tick shots cannot be performed on guards sitting on the centre line until the fifth rock of play and teams have four minutes of thinking time per end.

A Mario Mandzukic goal in the 109th minute sealed an extra time victory for Croatia after an early Kieran Trippier free kick was canceled out in the second half by Ivan Perisic during normal time.

“We gave it everything, I know we’re gonna look back and say we could have done this and what but at the end of the day ot was small margins in a big game and it didn’t go our way today,” said striker Kane, currently the tournament’s top scorer with six goals. 

Kane had lead England to their first World Cup semi-final since the Italia ’90 tournament 28 years ago, and in doing so scored record amount of goals. Trippier’s set piece on five minutes was England’s 12th at Russia 2018, more than any other Three Lions side.

England will now play Belgium on July 10th in the third place playoff match, a game that could see Kane extend his personal goal tally, but is not the game he would have initially wanted to have played in.

“It’s not something I’m really thinking about at the moment to be honest, it’s not the game we wanted to be in,” Kane admitted.

“It is what it is, we’ll try and play that game with as much pride and try and finish on a high, but we’re still gonna be hurting of course in that game, in three or four days time we’re still gonna be thinking about this one and what could have been, you know.

“Yeah of course [I want to play]. I think everyone will want to play but the gaffer will make a decision but yeah we’re extremely proud of what we’ve achieved and we know we’ve restored some pride in the short back home as well.

“So we can hold our heads up high but of course we know it’s an opportunity that on another day we could have done even more,” he added. 

Tottenham Hotspur striker Kane paid tribute to Croatia, led by Real Madrid’s Luka Madrid in the center midfield, and conceded that the “small margins” that make such a big difference didn’t go his side’s way not he night. 

“We had a good spell we went one nil up and we had a couple of chances we’re we could have got another. Second half, fair play to Croatia they came out and put the pressure on and we were under the cosh for a little while,” the 24-year-old skipper said.

“But we handled it well, but unfortunately we conceded at the wrong time, after that I thought we again picked it up again and done well.

“But it’s small margins, in extra time we get a corner cleared off the line. These are the things that you need to go your way in the big games and unfortunately for us it didn’t.”

In Gareth Southgate, England have a manager who has brought new vigor to the national team setup, and who has managed to transform a side who crashed out to minnows Iceland at Euro 2016 into World Cup semifinalists.

Kane revealed the plan is to “build on foundations” set in place buy the 47-year-old manager, who is still a rookie on the international stage.

“The gaffer had a little word and said we should all be proud of ourselves. Nothing he is going to say is going to make us feel any better,” Kane said. 

“To be proud and hold our head up high we’ve come a long way, especially from two years ago. You can hear the fans singing out there after the defeat it’s a proud feeling you know and all we can do is try and build on it.”

“We’ve built a good foundation after the last couple of years with the manager and it’s important that we carry that on, we’ve shown that we can do well in these tournaments and the aim now is not to wait another 20-odd years to get in another big semi-final, to come again and try and achieve our dream.”

Tesla’s electric semi truck, the Semi, impressed observers when it was unveiled in November. CEO Elon Musk had hinted that the truck’s specs would top analyst expectations and delivered with a truck that’s fast (it can accelerate from 0-60 mph in five seconds without a trailer attached), efficient (it boasts 500 miles of range per charge), and stylish.

The Semi won’t go into production until 2019, but what appear to be prototypes of the truck have popped up near Tesla’s headquarters in California. And on Wednesday, Musk posted a picture of the Semi in an Instagram post before it set out to make its first delivery.

According to Musk, the trucks were making their “first production cargo trip,” transporting battery packs from Tesla’s Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada to the company’s car-assembly factory in Fremont.

Since November, a number of major companies have ordered Semis, including Pepsi, Walmart, and Anheuser-Busch. But while big-name customers could quicken Tesla’s entrance into the trucking industry, they’ll likely put more pressure on Tesla to hit production deadlines than the over 400,000 Model 3 reservation holders.

Semi customers will also expect Tesla to hit the impressive specs the company announced in November. The most important feature is the truck’s 500-mile range per charge, which some competitors have claimed is impossible and analysts have said will rely on improvements in battery technology between now and 2019.

The Semi will be able to accelerate from 0-60 mph in five seconds without a trailer and in 20 seconds while carrying 80,000 pounds of cargo. The cabin features a unique design made possible by the lack of a diesel engine. Drivers will be positioned in the center of the vehicle to increase visibility and have enough room to stand in the cabin.

Like Tesla’s consumer cars, the Semi will have the company’s Autopilot software, which will allow the truck to brake and stay in its lane without driver input. Musk envisions Semis eventually moving in semi-autonomous convoys, which would save fuel costs by reducing wind resistance for some of the trucks.

The numbers behind Tesla Inc’s long-distance Semi electric trucks are close to making sense for haulers looking at a shift away from diesel that may save them tens of thousands of dollars a year, according to an executive with DHL. Jim Monkmeyer, president, Transportation at DHL Supply Chain, was among the first to order the trucks Silicon Valley billionaire Elon Musk’s company is expected to begin churning out in 2019.

Monkmeyer says the 10 trucks ordered are a test run and that he is still years away from switching the majority of his fleet of trucks to electric. But he is taking heed of a major shift away from diesel and the money it could save DHL. He says he could potentially pay off the difference between the purchase price of a Tesla Semi and a traditional diesel truck in less than two years, thanks to savings on maintenance and fuel.

“We are estimating that we could have pay back within a year-and-a-half based on energy usage as well as lower maintenance cost,” Monkmeyer told Reuters in an interview from his office in Columbus, Ohio.

“The maintenance savings can be enormous as well. Just because the engines are much simpler in terms of the number of parts and the complexities of the parts.”

The payback benefit is one of the keys to the success of the new generation of electric trucks and DHL, a unit of Germany’s Deutsche Post, has a history in the area, having already introduced 5,000 of its own electric “scooter” vans for local deliveries. The two-year timeline also chimes with assurances being given by Daimler AG’s van unit to customers interested in its forthcoming electric Sprinter van that the total cost of ownership will be the same as the cost to own and operate a conventional van over a few years.

COMMON THREADS

Monkmeyer says he does not expect to buy just Tesla electric trucks, but the in-depth discussions on price and feasibility that DHL is running on the trucks are in line with several small and large international haulers who spoke to Reuters.

A truck runs around 65,000-100,000 miles a year, and Tesla has promised a 20-percent saving on the per-mile operating costs truckers pay now, estimating its new Semi will cost $ 1.26 per mile compared to what it says are industry standards of around $ 1.51 for diesel trucks. Analysts, however, say the figures continue to evolve; the $ 1.51 cost assumes prices for diesel fuel and that fuel economy costs remain static. They also say fuel efficiency for diesel trucks is expected to advance further, with a compounding improvement in the high single digits by 2020, potentially limiting the cost savings advantage suggested by Tesla.

“The problem is they (Tesla) are aiming at a moving target, and even with that the electric (trucks) would be lower cost (in terms of operation) but it wouldn’t be quite as big a difference,” Jefferies analyst Stephen Volkmann said.

Monkmeyer says the company is still mapping out costs, but believes the two trucks already look like they will be “close enough” to make the switch feasible. Still, he says larger concerns loom around Tesla’s charging infrastructure and how haulers plan to switch from pumps in depots to swift “megacharging” of electric vehicles.

“The biggest issue is going to be how is that grid provided and how is it supported and how quickly can we get a network out there for use nationwide, throughout North America, throughout the world,” he says.

If the fully electric Tesla Semi lives up to the company’s claims, it will be far quicker than any other normal-production tractor-trailer on the market, capable of accelerating to 60 mph in just five seconds with no load or in just 20 seconds—the same as an empty diesel semi—when pulling a trailer that increases the gross weight to 80,000 pounds.

The Semi was recently caught by YouTube user Brandon Camargo in action on a residential street in Santa Clara, California, not far from Tesla’s headquarters. Only tire roar and a fair amount of motor whine are heard—a whisper compared to the decibel levels emitted by today’s turbo-diesel semis. The Tesla Semi also looks to be quick—as it should be, given that it isn’t pulling any sort of load.

The Semi will need to be more than just quick and quiet, however. It will need to deliver reliability, too, at the level that fleet managers demand. And it potentially will have a lot of competition in the EV realm, as nearly every major commercial truckmaker is working on an electric-powertrain project—including traditionally diesel-centric Cummins.

There are also some reality checks on which Tesla still has to pass muster. The Semi will require a new Megacharger system just to get the massive battery pack—capacity not yet disclosed—charged up for each haul. As battery experts have pointed out, Tesla has made some claims with both the Semi and Roadster, which it showed together in November, that don’t quite compute given the current state of battery technology. So the Semi may be relying on some other energy-storage innovations to reach its claimed driving range of up to 500 miles when loaded.

Orders are coming in quickly, including some high-profile ones from PepsiCo, UPS, and Walmart, among others. By some tallies, more than 375 orders have already been publicly announced by various companies. Perhaps Tesla will indicate the number of orders during its next financial-results update on February 7.

Tesla has a history of production kinks and delayed deliveries. If it can bring this truck to market, on time, starting in 2019, and in all the ways that fleets expect, it could help spur an entirely new wave of innovation in the commercial-truck industry—in much the same way the Model S has stoked interest in electric cars.

A couple of months after Tesla announced its all-electric semi-truck, someone has spotted a prototype driving around the streets of Santa Clara, California, captured it on video, and uploaded the video to YouTube.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk made some ambitious promises when he unveiled the Semi back in November. It’s supposed to have a range of up to 500 miles and the ability to haul a full 40-ton trailer. It should reach 65 miles per hour with a full trailer in 20 seconds.

Most impressive of all, Tesla has said that the 500-mile version of the truck will cost $ 180,000. That’s more than the average conventional diesel truck, but it’s a lot less than the $ 300,000 to $ 400,000 some experts estimated it would cost before the price was announced.

Tesla is now taking Semi pre-orders from some European countries, as Norwegian food distribution company Asko has ordered 10 of the electric semi-trucks, Electrek reports. 

Asko has already integrated a European electric truck into its fleet, but the company believes Tesla’s Semi has more advanced features.

“We have an electric truck today from a Dutch company, which we have had for almost two years,” CEO Tore Bekken told E24, Electrek first reported. “So, we think that Tesla is the one who has come the furthest with the technology so far. Therefore, we choose to book ten trucks from them.”

While some had doubts about Tesla’s ability to break into the trucking industry before it introduced the Semi, early orders indicate Tesla may beat expectations.

The electric trucks have impressive features, including a 500-mile range per charge and the ability to travel 400 miles on a 30-minute charge, impact resistant glass, an innovative cabin design, and the ability to go from 0-60 mph in five seconds without any cargo and in 20 seconds while carrying 80,000 pounds of cargo. But Tesla will ultimately be judged on the number of clients who buy and use the trucks over the long term.

These are the companies who have placed orders for the Tesla Semi so far:

  • Walmart: One of the first major companies to reserve the trucks, the retailer has made aggressive investments in technology in recent years as part of its effort to compete with Amazon.
  • Pepsi: Pepsi previously had the largest Semi order, reserving 100 trucks in December.
  • Anheuser-Busch: The brewer announced it ordered 40 Semis in December.
  • Sysco: The food distributor has reserved 50 Semis.
  • UPS: The delivery company placed the largest Semi order to date, reserving 125 trucks on Tuesday.
  • DHL: The transportation and logistics company has reserved 10 Semis to add to its fleet.
  • Meijer: Based in Michigan, the grocery chain has ordered four of the electric trucks.
  • Ryder: The transportation company reserved an unspecified number of Semis in November.
  • J.B. Hunt: The trucking company is set to purchase “multiple” Semis, but hasn’t revealed the exact number.
  • Asko: The Norwegian food distribution company has ordered 10 Semis.
  • Flexport: Ryan Peterson, the freight company’s CEO, announced the company has ordered one Semi.
  • JK Moving: The independent moving company has reserved four Semis.
  • Loblaw: After ordering 25 Semis, the Canadian supermarket chain announced plans to make its trucking fleet 100% electric by 2030.
  • Fercam: Based in Italy, the trucking company has reserved a single Semi.
  • Girteka Logistics: Not to be outdone by Fercam, the European transportation company also announced its plans to invest in one of Tesla’s electric trucks.
  • Fortigo Freight Services: The Canadian logistics company reserved one Semi.
  • Best Transportation: The shipping company also ordered one Semi.
  • Mecca & Son Trucking: According to Jalopnik, this trucking company has reserved one Semi.
