In September, Amazon started investigating reports that some of its employees in the US and China have been leaking data to third-party sellers in exchange for money. Now, the e-commerce giant has notified affected customers that an employee shared their email addresses with a third-party seller. Amazon told The Wall Street Journal that it already fired that particular employee and booted the seller who received the email addresses off the platform. More importantly, it said no other customer information other than those addresses were disclosed.

Amazon didn’t clarify whether that former employee was the sole culprit or if they just happened to be the only one caught out of many. It also didn’t specify where they’re from and didn’t reveal the real scope of the issue. Based on WSJ’s previous report, though, sellers have paid Amazon personnel as much as $ 2,000 for customers’ email addresses. By knowing customers’ personal accounts, the sellers can directly (and maybe even repeatedly) ask them to change or pull negative reviews, since “Verified Purchase” reviews affect products’ placement on search results pages. In some instances, they reportedly bribed the employees to pull negative reviews. Seeing as several third-party sellers can list the exact same items, placement is crucial in making a sale.

The company is now asking customers to give it a heads-up if they receive unsolicited emails from sellers, who could offer them free or discounted goods if they go back and change their reviews or give the listing a higher rating. By urging customers to do so, those sellers are also contributing to Amazon’s fake review problem, which it has been grappling with for years.

“We have reprinted six times for a total of seven to meet extraordinary demand — that will put one million books in print before we’ve even gone on sale,” a Simon & Schuster spokesperson said to CNN “Reliable Sources” host Brian Stelter.

Three days after Elon Musk tweeted that he had “funding secured” to take Tesla private, we still don’t know who, if anyone, has agreed to provide the billions of dollars needed to buy out the company. But plaintiffs’ lawyers aren’t waiting any longer for Musk to provide more details.

On Friday, stock trader Kalman Isaacs filed a class-action lawsuit arguing that Musk’s Tuesday tweets constituted securities fraud. The lawsuit, first reported by Reuters, appears to be the first one claiming that Musk’s Tuesday tweets violated federal securities law.

At the time of Musk’s tweet, Isaacs was short at least 3,000 shares of Tesla stock. That means that, at some point prior to Musk’s tweet, Isaacs had borrowed Tesla shares and sold them, betting that the price would fall and he would eventually be able to buy them back at a discount, pocketing the difference.

For the first time, Amazon is cutting the prices of third-party seller items at its own expense to be more competitive with other online sites, a move first spotted by the WSJ. Such items are labelled as “Discount provided by Amazon,” marking a new policy that even many of the retailers aren’t aware of. “I do not know if this is new or if I just never noticed it before,” wrote reseller Rock Creek Gifts on Amazon’s seller forum. The discounts are less than 10 percent, and appear to only be applied for sellers that use Amazon’s fulfillment service.

Amazon rolled out the discounts just in time for the holidays in an apparent effort to be competitive with rivals like Wal-Mart on goods it doesn’t directly sell itself. “This item is sold by a third-party seller. The discount is provided by Amazon,” the offer states. “This is a limited time discount.”

Sellers have noted that the discount does not impact what they are paid on products, so Amazon is eating the entire reduction itself. “We actually have a couple of products where Amazon is doing just that and it’s great,” notes one seller. “One example is a product price at $ 78.50 [discounted to $ 74.90]. We still get the full proceeds from $ 78.50 sale less the fees.”

The resellers are puzzled, however, as to how Amazon is selecting products to discount, and some note that it’s not necessarily a good thing. Many have arrangements with other resellers, including Wal-Mart, that require them to maintain price parity on products sold on Amazon and elsewhere. The deal might also anger big brands which try to exert tight control over pricing.

The majority of resellers seem thrilled with it, though, and it should be a boon to consumers seeking hard-to-find items that Amazon doesn’t stock itself. Anyway, affected resellers with price-matching agreements can opt out of the discounts, Amazon told the WSJ. Either way, it’s a canny move by the retailer — given the same price, many consumers will usually opt for Amazon, given its generous return and shipping policies.

For anyone who is in any doubt how popular the SNES Classic Mini, new information this week how well it’s doing.

New NPD results are in and reveal just how fruitful it can be for Nintendo to have a better level of stock in its release month.

NPD analyst Mat Piscatella has confirmed that the Super Nintendo was the highest selling hardware platform in September.

To put that into perspective, it means that the little retro console with limited stock managed to beat the Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One in the United States.

“SNES Classic was the overall top unit selling hardware platform in the period,” Piscatella revealed.

“PS4 led all HW platforms in consumer spend during Sept 2017, while Switch sold the most units amongst the current generation consoles.

“HW spending in Sept 2017 grew 34% versus YA to $ 316m. Spending growth was driven by Switch, SNES Classic and PlayStation 4.

“Sony’s PlayStation 4 remains the best selling hardware platform year to date.”

And its likely it could have done even better if Nintendo had more stock available for the September release.

However, while September was a big week for the SNES Mini, it’s unlikely to do the same in October.

On launch day the SNES Classic Mini was only available to buy from UK-based websites at Argos, John Lewis and Asda Direct.

Following on from that there was a dry spell of around a week and a half where they was no stock available from British websites.

And stock has been hard to come by for those hoping to buy a SNES Classic Mini in recent weeks.

The problem has been felt in both North America and the UK, with a limited supply being found at different times, from different retailers.

But there have been a few new updates this week which will have fans hoping that more regular stock announcements will be arriving soon.

SNES Classic Mini stock returned to the GAME website on Friday, however it all sold out fast again.

The new units appeared on the GAME website just after 4.30pm BST, however stock all sold out in around 20 minutes.

This is the third time since launch that the GAME website has had the Super Nintendo available to order.

They seem to be the best stocked UK website for the SNES Classic Mini at the moment, so make sure you keep an eye in case more stock does become available.

The next big Classic console to be launched by Nintendo could be the Game Boy, with more revealed through recent patents.

It’s game over for an Alabama man who claims his patent on “Carpenter Bee Traps” is being infringed by competing products on eBay.

Robert Blazer filed his lawsuit in 2015, saying that his US Patent No. 8,375,624 was being infringed by a variety of products being sold on eBay. Blazer believed the online sales platform should have to pay him damages for infringing his patent. A patent can be infringed when someone sells or “offers to sell” a patented invention.

At first, Blazer went through eBay’s official channels for reporting infringement, filing a “Notice of Claimed Infringement,” or NOCI. At that point, his patent hadn’t even been issued yet and was still a pending application, so eBay told him to get back in touch if his patent was granted.
