Aaron Finch and Mitch Marsh’s sloppy dismissals at the MCG on Saturday have resulted in calls for both to be axed.
However, the Sheffield Shield’s mid-season hiatus has made it impossible for anybody outside the Test XI to truly demand selection.
Every Test, ODI, T20I, and BBL match live. SIGN UP NOW!
That sentiment applies to Australia’s fourth Test against India at the SCG but also the two-Test series against Sri Lanka that starts in Brisbane on January 24.
Matthew Renshaw, among the leading candidates to replace Finch at the top of the order, currently can’t get a game for the Brisbane Heat.
Marnus Labuschagne, a middle-order option who made his Test debut earlier this year, is also on drinks duty for the Heat.
Even for those playing in the BBL, it’s near-impossible to make a compelling case for a Test call-up.
Peter Handscomb’s polished knock of 70 for Melbourne Stars was an impressive response to being dropped, and the Test squad member may yet return for the series finale.
But the challenge posed by India’s attack at the SCG can hardly be compared to that of the Sydney Sixers in a Twenty20.

FIVE THINGS WE LEARNED: Cummins puts top-order to shame to stake claim on all-rounder status
“Because there’s no Shield cricket being played at the moment due to the Big Bash League, it’s hard to pick someone who’s in form in the longer form,” former selector Mark Waugh wrote exclusively for Fox Sports.
“There’s no possible replacement really jumping out of the pack that’s not already in the Aussie Test squad. They’re still probably the best batsmen in the country.”
Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft’s suspensions are also obviously making life harder for Trevor Hohns’ panel.
Ricky Ponting, who nominated former Test keeper Matthew Wade as an in-form old hand capable of shoring up an inexperienced order, highlighted how the BBL is making life hard for Test aspirants and selectors.
“No-one’s played any Sheffield Shield cricket over the last few weeks to try to put up a case to get into the side,” Ponting told cricket.com.au.
“Some of our Shield players might get on a bit of a run … then Big Bash starts and they’re put on ice for another seven or eight weeks.”
That scenario has frustrated coaches, selectors and players in recent years but it’s unlikely to change given the commercial success that is the BBL.
Shane Warne and Steve Waugh headline the greats to have recently criticised Cricket Australia (CA) for devaluing the Shield, which was one of many topics covered in The Ethics Centre’s independent review.

Albert Einstein is supposed to have said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Almost every Test match in the Ashes has told the same story: England’s bowlers looked ineffective, the batsmen didn’t go on to get big hundreds and Australia’s did.
But it was hardly unpredictable. Even from my own perspective, there has hardly been a single mishap that I didn’t put in writing before it happened, whether it has been the lack of genuine pace in the bowling attack or James Vince’s unsuitability to batting at No 3 in a Test side.
Vince’s selection was a punt that his game would flourish in Australian conditions that didn’t pay off – but what else could we expect? He averaged 19 in his first Test stint and averaged 30 in county cricket.
Look at the selection policy over the last two or three years. England drop people too easily. England went to South Africa and won there. We came back and thrashed Sri Lanka. I played in those series but didn’t play well against Sri Lanka and got dropped. Vince didn’t play well and neither did Alex Hales so they got dropped too. Suddenly, you’re not really going anywhere and there doesn’t seem to be a selection plan. You start to wonder what they are looking for.
Sometimes it seems we are going round and round, hoping to find the next Joe Root or Alastair Cook and that is a risky form of selection.
Players have come and gone so often that it suggests selectors lack a belief in the players they are picking. If you pick someone and you know they’re a good player then an early struggle isn’t the end of the world.
When the selectors have that conviction in that a player, all the criticism bounces off because they’ve been backed and they’re going to play.
The constant criticism of some players could be very quickly shut down if they received more uncompromising backing from the ECB. We select as if we’ve got an embarrassment of riches – but we don’t.
It has been a difficult tour for Joe Root, leading England in Australia for the first time with the odds stacked against him. He didn’t get the big hundred people said he had to but I thought he played pretty well. He still led the averages for England (378 runs at 47.25) and contributed well. When you consider that only Alastair Cook went on for England and made that big score, Root did okay.
But the Yorkshireman will now know that a captain is only as good as the bowling attack he has and that comes back to selection. How Mark Wood didn’t get a game I just don’t know. Even if they were concerned about his injury problems, it would have been worth picking him just for 15 overs a day of genuine fast bowling: England had none of that in their side.
This tour highlighted England’s spin problem once again too. At Sydney, Mason Crane’s 1/193 off 48 overs represented the worst ever figures for an England debutant – but it’s not entirely his fault. I feel sorry for him.
He’s not ready. He hardly gets a game for Hampshire so how can he be expected to come into a huge Test match and rip through the Australian batting line-up that has been so prolific in this series?
He should have been bowling for the Lions, learning his trade, while England had someone like Jack Leach as their second spinner in the main squad.

Mason Crane was given a baptism of fire by Australia in Sydney
Leach is criticised for only taking wickets because Somerset’s home ground is so conducive to spin. But the new toss rule in county cricket is designed to encourage pitches which favour spinners.
I’m in Sri Lanka at the moment where there are five spinners at every net session who would probably end up on the Ashes tour – yet when one of our own starts taking wickets we look for reasons to doubt him and he can’t get a game for England. If county cricket is not going to be the breeding ground for young talent, then it’s going to be a guessing game at international level.
Unless we make big changes in the way we look at the game in England, Einstein’s insanity will continue.

NSW’s Andrew Fifita.
LEGENDS were made and stars faded in State of Origin Game 1 at Suncorp Stadium.
The Blues cruised to a 28-4 victory thanks to a brilliant display of attacking rugby league.
Andrew Fifita was superb, taking Man of the Match honours, but he wasn’t alone in starring.
One Blues star dominated every column of the stats sheet, while another produced record breaking numbers.
Not everyone enjoyed the night though. Several Queensland players are facing a nervous wait ahead of Origin II. The Maroons have long used the “pick and stick” method, but is it time for a new era?
Here are our player ratings for Game 1.
NEW SOUTH WALES
1. JAMES TEDESCO: Mistake-free all night under the high ball. Set up second try and was strong in attack. Stopped a certain try to Matt Gillett. Led the Blues with 193 metres, two line breaks and scored a try himself. Brilliant. Rating 9.5/10
2. BLAKE FERGUSON: Looked to have injured his shoulder in the opening period. Failed to combine with Josh Dugan a couple of times. Rating 6/10
3. JOSH DUGAN: Looked exactly like he hadn’t played since the Anzac Test and made several errors. One moment of brilliance prevented a certain try to Aidan Guerra. Rating: 6/10
4. JARRYD HAYNE: Showed moments of brilliance in attack and scored his ninth Origin try. Was shown up in defence at times and will have to work at it. Rating: 7.5/10
5. BRETT MORRIS: Some nice breaks in the first half and was mistake-free. Looked to hurt his knee at one point and faded out of the game from then on. Rating: 6.5/10
6. JAMES MALONEY: As polished a performance as we have ever seen from him at Origin level. Had a hand in most tries and stepped up well when Pearce went down. Rating 8/10
7. MITCHELL PEARCE: Failed to execute a couple of times on the final play. Backed up well to claim second try. Unfortunately went off concussed in 50th minute. Looked more settled in the Origin environment than years past. Rating: 6.5/10
8. AARON WOODS: Excelled in opening 20 minutes, but then had a long wait until the 58th until he got a second stint. Did nothing wrong. Rating 7/10
9. NATHAN PEATS: Gave great service out of dummy half. Good defence, covered most ground ever recorded in Origin – 8.1km. Also made 53 tackles. Rating: 8/10
10. ANDREW FIFITA: Showed he was a big game player. Bent the line with every run. Queensland could not contain him. Earned Man of the Match award. Rating: 9/10
11. JOSH JACKSON: Unheralded. Does the hard work that doesn’t get noticed. Restricted to 44 minutes in the rotation and just seven runs. But was a rock in defence. Rating 7/10
12. BOYD CORDNER: Captaincy hasn’t hurt the man. 151 metres, 31 tackles. Actions spoke loud. Rating: 7.5/10
13. TYSON FRIZELL: Didn’t have the impact of last year, but 32 tackles helped hold the middle together. Rating: 6.5/10
INTERCHANGE
14. DAVID KLEMMER: Added impact off the bench, keeping NSW rolling forward when Woods and Fifita came off. 172 metres gained. Rating: 8/10
15. WADE GRAHAM: Superb off the bench with one linebreak assist and played his part in two tries. Rating 7.5/10
16. JAKE TRBOJEVIC: Impressive debut highlighted by teaming up with Tedesco for a try-saving tackle. Rating: 7/10
17. JACK BIRD: Switched to the halves after Pearce’s injury with immediate effect. His strong run and quick play-the-ball gave Tedesco a platform to cross. Rating: 7/10

QUEENSLAND
1. DARIUS BOYD — A lacklustre performance will surely make the drums beat louder for the return of Billy Slater. Rating: 6/10
2. COREY OATES — Used his height to full advantage to score the Maroons’ first try. Answered every question Mitchell Pearce’s kicking game asked of him. Rating: 7.5/10
3. WILL CHAMBERS — Contained in attack. Delivered the hit on Mitchell Pearce which ended the NSW half-back’s night. Rating: 5/10
4. JUSTIN O’NEILL — Tough night at the office with little influence in attack and a defensive lapse leading to Jarryd Hayne’s try. Rating: 4/10
5. DANE GAGAI — Showed spark in the first half but increasingly found it difficult as the Blues began to boss the game. Rating: 6.5/10
6. ANTHONY MILFORD — Answered any doubts about his ability on the big stage by showcasing his footwork and passing before friendly fire ended his night early in the second half. Rating: 7/10
7. COOPER CRONK — A sublime kick to set up their only try underpinned a typically strong performance. Rating: 7.5/10

13. JOSH McGUIRE — His hardworking defensive efforts filled the brief and he finished with more than 100m. Rating: 7/10
INTERCHANGE:
14. MICHAEL MORGAN — Came off the bench in his usual solid supporting role. Rating: 6/10
15. SAM THAIDAY — Struggled to have a major impact off the bench. Rating: 5/10
16. AIDAN GUERRA — Denied a try by Dugan’s desperation but, otherwise, had little sway over the game off the bench. Rating: 6/10

Mitchell Swepson has a strong ally.
THE big day is here. Australia has copped a lot of flak from India in the lead-up to the first Test in Pune. Former India superstar Harbhajan Singh has already called the series as a whitewash in the home side’s favour after naming Australia’s squad the “weakest side to tour India”. The first ball will be bowled at 3pm (AEDT). Follow our live coverage from the match at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune below.
Warne picks controversial XI

Shane Warne gave his pick for the first Test against India, and it included a number of interesting selections.
The 145-Test veteran snubbed the option of a third specialist pacemen in his hypothetical side, picking Nathan Lyon and debutant Mitchell Swepson for the dusty Pune wicket.
Warne included all-rounder Mitch Marsh in his XI to partner Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood as a third seam option. Despite only scoring two half-centuries in his 31 innings for Australia, Marsh’s handy record against spin has brought him back into favour for selection over recent debutant Hilton Cartwright.
Warne’s spin-heavy unit included all-rounder Glenn Maxwell at number five, obviously included to combat India’s tweakers. Shaun Marsh also got the nod from the former leggie, placing him at the top of the order over the in form Matt Renshaw.

Test legend Michael Slater said earlier on Thursday that Warne had conned selectors into picking Swepson for the India Tour by being outspoken with his support for the 23-year-old.
Slater said the Australian selectors appear confused about how best to use its stock of leg-spinners across all three forms of the game after Adam Zampa’s impressive display against Sri Lanka in the Twenty20 International series.
“They’ve been confused with their spinners,” Slater told Sky Sports Radio’s Big Sports Breakfast.
“Last season they had (Cameron) Boyce in the one-dayers and it was Zampa in the T20s and then it was the other way around and now Swepson is over there right now.
“Warney was making a lot of noise before hand and I reckon Warney conned the selectors. They’ve got three young leggies running around and I think they’re confused who should be playing what and when.”
IPL teammates to square off in Pune
The pitbull.Source:News Corp Australia
Bonds established during the Indian Premier League will be tested in 36C heat on Thursday, when Australia’s first Test against India starts in Pune. Battles for the Border-Gavaskar trophy are often tense affairs; some five players were slapped with misconduct fines during the most recent series in 2014-15.
In that regard, it wouldn’t be a surprise if there are any spats in the contest that starts at 3pm AEDT on Thursday.
However, the lead up to the much-anticipated series has been devoid of barbs or bombshells.
The closest Australia came to stirring the pot was Steve Smith last week publicly giving teammates a licence to “get into a battle verbally” during the four-Test series if it suited them to do so.
India batsman Ajinkya Rahane’s suggestion “Australian players play mind games” and that India are out “to dominate them in every aspect” is as hostile as the hosts have been during the past week.
Those comments came before India skipper Virat Kohli suggested every cricketer in the world should admire Mitchell Starc – and after countless Australians detailed their respect for Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin.
The IPL may well have a lot to do with it.
Smith, Ashwin, Rahane, Mitch Marsh, Peter Handscomb and Usman Khawaja all played with Pune last year.
The top-ranked Test bowler in the world Ashwin refused to bowl offspin to Smith in the nets, instead sending down legbreaks.
But Handscomb and Rahane talked tactics after striking up a bond during the Twenty20 competition.
“I got along well with him and had a really good chat about batting in India and how he went about playing spin,” Handscomb said.
“I haven’t seen him yet (since landing in Pune for the first Test). “He’s a good man … I dare say I’ll catch up with him at some stage. “It was good to … get around a few of the Indian lads and just discuss how they play cricket in India because it’s so different to anywhere else in the world.” Kohli was effusive in his praise for Starc, but also spoke at length about how close he is to many Australian players.
“I’m really good friends with all these guys off the field, I know them really well,” Kohli said.
“We get along really well and on the field we’re professional enough to understand it’s going to be a competition.” Kolhi has a history of run-ins with Australians, having rowed with Smith in a T20 and Test at Adelaide Oval.
