Tesla’s Model 3 design studio is now open for everyone in left-hand drive European countries, and that means it’s now taking orders from the public in those markets. The automaker started displaying the new vehicle in European showrooms in November 2018, hinting at its impending release. While it began taking orders from reservation holders in December, only those who plunked down a $ 1,000 reservation fee were given access to the design studio. Now, anybody can visit Tesla’s website and go through the customization process to see how much the set-up they want will cost.
Model 3 configurator is now open to left-hand drive countries in Europe. Design your Model 3
— Tesla (@Tesla) January 4, 2019
Based on the design studio options, Tesla is only taking orders for the Long Range Battery and Performance versions of Model 3 for now — the more affordable Mid-Range Battery vehicle is nowhere to be found. The car’s pricing varies per region, so how much interested customers will have to earmark for the purchase depends on their location. In France, for instance, a basic Long Range Battery version without Enhanced Autopilot is priced at €53,500 (US$ 61,000), whereas it costs €59,600 (US$ 68,000) in Italy. The same model will set Americans back $ 42,950 after savings.
Interested customers in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland can take the customization process for a spin right here. While we can’t see an option for the country, Tesla has also started taking orders from the public in China, according to Electrek.

Our question this week: Should children be allowed to select their own gender? Let us know by email or in the comments below.
In 2011, The Toronto Star reported on a controversial baby, Storm Stocker-Witterick. Storm’s parents had decided not to reveal the sex of their child and to let Storm determine which gender she or he wanted to identify with. The public outcry in response to the story was overwhelming. Angry letters came pouring in; drivers rolled down their windows to shout “Boy!” at the Stocker-Wittericks as they walked down the street. When The Star revisited the family more than five years later, it found that the young Storm now confidently identified herself as a “she.”
The story of baby Storm raises an issue that many still find controversial, and that is the subject of this week’s Third Rail With OZY question: Should children be allowed to select their own gender?
A recent study found that allowing transgender children to socially transition was beneficial to their mental health …
In Storm’s native Canada, accommodating a child’s gender identity or gender expression is now protected by the nation’s human rights code. It remains a raging debate in Canada’s neighbor to the south, with many arguing that children should not be afforded that option. For example, according to a recent statement issued by the American College of Pediatricians, a socially conservative advocacy group of pediatricians and other health care professionals, “[a] person’s belief that he or she is something they are not is, at best, a sign of confused thinking.”
Such self-knowledge is not confused thinking, says Morgane Oger, chair of the Trans Alliance and founder of the Morgane Oger Foundation, and there are several recent research studies to support the benefits of allowing transgender children to socially transition (like adopting changes to appearance, name and pronouns) at an early age. A recent study in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, for example, found that allowing transgender children to socially transition was beneficial to their mental health, and they did not demonstrate any higher levels of depression or anxiety to their peers. What can create mental issues, on the other hand, is being stigmatized or not allowed to transition.
Does a child know enough to make such a decision at a young age? Many transgender adults speak of knowing from an early age about their true gender identity. “The vast majority of kids that come out as transgender stay there. It tends to stick,” says Oger, and if it doesn’t, it’s not really that important. “Children should be able to be who they are, whether or not that identity changes.” The decision later to medically transition, on the other hand, is obviously a more significant one, and one that in Canada is generally made in coordination with a child psychologist and the child’s parents.
Should parents who allow their children to choose their own gender be considered irresponsible … or enlightened? Do we risk doing transgender children more harm by restricting their choices? “One must not pressure one’s children. We know this is detrimental to them,” says Oger. “Just leave them alone.”
Do you agree? Is gender a choice that children should be able to make for themselves? Let us know by emailing thirdrail@ozy.com or by answering in the comments below.

The Buffalo Sabres selected Swedish defenceman Rasmus Dahlin with the No. 1 pick in the NHL draft on Friday night.
Considered far and away the class of the 2018 talent pool, the slick 18-year-old had seven goals and 13 assists in 41 games for Frolunda of the Swedish Hockey League in 2017-18.
Dahlin is the second Swedish-born player selected first overall. Mats Sundin was the top choice of the Quebec Nordiques in 1989.
Dahlin also was named his country's top junior hockey player last season.
The six-foot-three, 185-pound Dahlin was honoured as the top blue liner at the 2018 world junior championship in Buffalo, registering six assists in seven games. He also played twice for his country as a 17-year-old at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
The Carolina Hurricanes, selecting second, took Russian-born Barrie Colts winger Andrei Svechnikov.
The Montreal Canadiens, the first Canadian team to pick, took Finnish centre Jesperi Kotkaniemi with the No. 3 selection. The Ottawa Senators then selected Boston University winger Brady Tkachuk, the son of ex-NHLer Keith Tkachuk, at No. 4.
The Arizona Coyotes selected the first Canadian-born player in the draft, grabbing Barrett Hayton of Peterborough, Ont., with the fifth pick. The centre plays for the OHL's Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
Prior to the start of the draft, NHL commissioner presented the 2017-18 Humboldt Broncos with the E.J. McGuire Award of Excellence.
The Broncos were on their way to Nipawin for a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League playoff game on April 6 when their bus collided with a truck, resulting in the deaths of 16 people, including 10 players.
Created in 2015, the E.J. McGuire Award of Excellence is given annually by the league to the draft candidate who exemplifies commitment to excellence through strength of character, competitiveness and athleticism.
"From this tragedy, the hockey world has come to learn more about the Humboldt Broncos organization and players, their role in the fabric of their community, and their commitment to the pursuit of excellence both on and off the ice," Dan Marr, director of NHL Central Scouting, said in a statement. "The stories we have heard about those who were lost and those who continue to heal have been truly inspirational and serve as great examples of all the characteristics this award was meant to recognize."

Facebook maintained secret deals with a handful of companies, allowing them to gain “special access to user records,” long after it cut off most developers’ access to such user data back in 2015, according to a new Friday report by the Wall Street Journal, citing court documents it did not publish and other unnamed sources.
These arrangements, which were known as “whitelists,” reportedly allowed “certain companies to access additional information about a user’s Facebook friends,” including phone numbers.
Numerous companies, including the Royal Bank of Canada and Nissan Motor Company, apparently maintained such deals.

We’ll take any info about Wonder Woman 2 we can get at this point. Like how it’s being shot, for instance! Patty Jenkins will be shooting a portion of her super-sequel in IMAX, so expect big action when Wonder Woman 2 hits in 2019.
Superhero movies have been embracing the larger-than-life IMAX format for a while now. Christopher Nolan shot large chunks of The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises in IMAX, and the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War is the first movie to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras. Now Wonder Woman 2 is getting in on the action. During a recent IMAX earnings call, IMAX exec Greg Foster revealed that a good chunk of Patty Jenkins’ highly-anticipated sequel would be shot with IMAX cameras:
“I’m excited to announce that Wonder Woman 2, which comes out in the second half of 2019, will be shot with IMAX film cameras in select sequences. This Warner Brothers DC production, the sequel of the global juggernaut from 2017, is directed by Patti Jenkins and produced by Chuck Roven and Rebecca Oakley Roven. And we couldn’t be more excited that IMAX has been chosen to be a part of the film’s design.”
Foster also commented that “Disney’s Lion King, which comes out in July of 2019 and is directed by our longtime partner, Jon Favreau, will feature roughly 30 minutes of key sequences in our aspect ratio.”
While Wonder Woman was released in IMAX 3D format, it wasn’t filmed in IMAX – a key distinction. More often than not, studios will simply stretch their films into IMAX format rather than film in IMAX, since it’s a bit cheaper. Unfortunately, you don’t always get the best quality picture and sound with this method. Directly shooting in IMAX results in high quality picture and sound, and, as Christopher Nolan once said, “it’s the best argument that cinema has against the competition represented by improvement to home video systems.”
Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 2 will bring back Gal Gadot as the Amazon Warrior. Kristen Wiig will play the main antagonist Cheetah, and Game of Thrones actor Pedro Pascal was recently cast in an undisclosed role. Specific details about the sequel are still under wraps, but in the past, Jenkins has said:
“[Wonder Woman 2 is] really still going to other values of hers, and a similar formula insofar as making a great, enjoyable fun movie but that ultimately in its third act turns some very big issues, and a very big experience that will aim to have slightly more weight and profundity than it has to have. Because that’s a formula that I really like, and I like the idea of taking somebody on a very solid, great journey but that arrives at a bigger question being answered. So it’s like that but because she is Wonder Woman and she’s here now and she’s fully developed, it’s got great fun from the start and great big superhero presence from the start, and is funny and a great love story again and a couple new unbelievable characters who I’m so excited about, who are very different than were in the last movie.”
Wonder Woman 2 opens on November 1, 2019.
