When asked about its value on the programme, Charles Hanson said he expected the egg to sell for two to three hundred pounds.

The auctioneer explained: “It’s in remarkably complete condition, with its casing as well. I think to many collectors, this egg really belongs in a museum to celebrate the food fancies through the decades.”

At the auction in Etwall near Derby, buyers scrambled to purchase this piece of history and the hammer price of £800 surpassed all expectations.

The successful bidder was the Bygones museum in Torquay, Devon.

It joins the museum’s collection of unusual historical items and antique food, which includes a Christmas pudding made in 1900.

Viewers can watch this episode of Bargain Hunt in June, although the show airs daily at 12.15pm on BBC One.

Strictly Come Dancing 2019: BBC dealt shock blow as final sees Kelvin Fletcher lift trophy https://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2019-bbc-dealt-shock-blow-as-final-sees-kelvin-fletcher-lift-trophy/ https://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2019-bbc-dealt-shock-blow-as-final-sees-kelvin-fletcher-lift-trophy/#respond Sun, 15 Dec 2019 21:00:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2019-bbc-dealt-shock-blow-as-final-sees-kelvin-fletcher-lift-trophy/

Kelvin and Oti were up against EastEnders star Emma Barton and her partner Anton Du Beke and CBBC presenter Karim Zeroual and his pro-dancer Amy Dowden. They each performed three of their best dances in the hopes of impressing the viewer enough to vote them the winners of this year’s competition. But it seems it wasn’t enough to keep the die-hard Strictly Come Dancing fans interested as their viewing figures took a dip compared to last year.

Last year saw Stacey Dooley, Joe Sugg, Ashley Roberts, Faye Tozer compete to win the Glitterball trophy all the celebs want on their shelf.

The 2018 final saw 11.7 million people tuning in to watch the marathon two hour long show, with a peak audience of 12.7 million.

Stacey and her now boyfriend Kevin beat off all the competition and were crowned the winners.

However, it seems this year viewers aren’t as interested as the amount of people watching last night took a dip.

Last night saw Emma and Anton dance the Charleston  to Thoroughly Modern Millie, their showdance to Let Yourself Go and their favourite dance which was the Viennese Waltz  to Send In The Clowns.

Karim and Any danced the quickstep to Mr. Pinstripe Suit, their showdance to A Million Dreams from The Greatest Showman and their favourite dance, which was the Jive to You Can’t Stop The Beat.

Eurovision 2019: Humiliation for last-place UK after huge blunder sees score LOWERED https://briefnews.eu/eurovision-2019-humiliation-for-last-place-uk-after-huge-blunder-sees-score-lowered/ https://briefnews.eu/eurovision-2019-humiliation-for-last-place-uk-after-huge-blunder-sees-score-lowered/#respond Thu, 23 May 2019 10:25:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/eurovision-2019-humiliation-for-last-place-uk-after-huge-blunder-sees-score-lowered/

The UK’s bottom-placed Eurovision Song Contest entry has had its score lowered by five points after organisers made an error while calculating the totals. Organisers said Michael Rice’s song Bigger Than Us picked up 11 points from Saturday’s finale, rather than 16 as originally stated. The error came about when an incorrect calculation was used to create a substitute score after the Belarussian jury was dismissed, the Eurovision Broadcasting Union said.

In a statement, organisers blamed “human error” for the mistake and said it “deeply regrets” the error.

Eurovision’s top four including winner Duncan Laurence from the Netherlands remained unchanged.

Mr Laurence’s song Arcade gained six points, bringing it to a total of 498 points.

Mr Rice from Hartlepool sang at the Expo Tel Aviv venue in Israel against a backdrop of a starry night sky and racing comets.

The 21-year-old was joined by an outfit of backing vocalists dressed in white as he broke into the song’s gospel-influenced chorus.

While Belarus’ jury was dismissed after its semi-final votes were publicly revealed, breaking contest rules.

Despite finishing in 26th place, Mr Rice said he enjoyed his experience.

He said: “The main thing I wanted to do was come and sing my heart out and make my country proud.

“I’m so thankful to the fans who have supported me and the song, as well as my whole team who have supported me throughout this whole amazing journey.

“I’ve been able to travel and meet amazing artists from across Europe and beyond.

“I can’t wait to see what’s next for me and get back into the studio and bring you some new music soon. And of course congratulations to Duncan – he was amazing!”

The UK came last for the first time since 2010.

Prospects of a British victory were bleak – both Coral and Ladbrokes gave Rice a 150/1 chance of taking the title.

Mr Rice, who rose to fame after winning the singing show All Together Now last year, has said he hopes to improve the UK’s reputation at the contest.

He performed 16th, after Norway and before Iceland – whose techno-punk outfit Hatari were a favourite to win.

Britain has not won Eurovision in 22 years or finished in the top 10 in the past decade.

US Navy probes abrupt death of 5th fleet commander in Bahrain, sees ‘no foul play’ https://briefnews.eu/us-navy-probes-abrupt-death-of-5th-fleet-commander-in-bahrain-sees-no-foul-play/ https://briefnews.eu/us-navy-probes-abrupt-death-of-5th-fleet-commander-in-bahrain-sees-no-foul-play/#respond Sun, 02 Dec 2018 00:19:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-navy-probes-abrupt-death-of-5th-fleet-commander-in-bahrain-sees-no-foul-play/

The commander of US naval forces in the Middle East, Vice Adm. Scott Stearney, has been found dead at his residence in Bahrain. The US Navy investigating the Fifth Fleet chief’s death said no foul play is suspected at this point.

Stearney, who had taken over the command of the Fifth Fleet only in May, was found dead in his quarters in Bahrain on Saturday.

“The Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the Bahraini Ministry of Interior are cooperating on the investigation, but at this time no foul play is suspected,” Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson said in a statement, without elaborating on any circumstances surrounding Stearney’s passing.

The second-in-command of the Fifth Fleet, Rear Adm. Paul Schlise, assumed the command of US Naval Forces in the Middle East, responsible for overseeing more than 20,000 US and coalition service personnel, Richardson said.

Stearney, a Chicago native, had dedicated three decades of his life serving in the Navy, which he entered in April 1984 as an aviator. Throughout his long career, he flew F/A-18 Hornet and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet strike fighters while deployed abroad on the USS Theodore Roosevelt, USS George Washington, and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69). The 58-year-old also served as a tactics instructor at Navy Fighter Weapons School.

Outrage at govt. advisor’s date rape comments sees right-wing come to his defense https://briefnews.eu/outrage-at-govt-advisors-date-rape-comments-sees-right-wing-come-to-his-defense/ https://briefnews.eu/outrage-at-govt-advisors-date-rape-comments-sees-right-wing-come-to-his-defense/#respond Thu, 08 Nov 2018 11:26:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/outrage-at-govt-advisors-date-rape-comments-sees-right-wing-come-to-his-defense/

Calls to sack philosopher Sir Roger Scruton, from an unpaid government role, have grown after quotes stating there was “no such crime” as date rape were attributed to him.

Buzzfeed News unearthed that in a 2005 lecture, Scruton dismissed both date rape and sexual harassment, saying the latter was just “impoliteness,” claiming that there was a “huge injustice” against those accused.

During the lecture, titled: ‘Sexual Morality for Heathens,’ at Rice University in Houston, Texas, the philosopher said that women who made date rape allegations were withdrawing consent retrospectively, because “the whole thing went too quickly.”

On Saturday, Housing secretary James Brokenshire announced that Scruton was appointed on the government’s new buildings commission.

After the latest revelations, Labour’s shadow minister for the Cabinet Office, Jon Trickett, joined in the calls for action, saying: “Theresa May must step in and sack him.”

Downing Street has remained tight lipped on the story, leaving Scruton himself and prominent conservative figures to defend him.

Scruton released a statement attacking the “highly selective quotes,” adding that he was “in no way suggesting that victims of date rape are not victims of a crime.”

Fellow right winger Toby Young, who also was forced to resign from a similar role over various offensive comments, leapt to his defense. Appearing on BBC’s Radio 4’s Today Programme, Young stating that Scruton should not be ‘excluded from public life’ because his views don’t align with the “prevailing progressive orthodoxy.”

Scruton was also supported by historians Niall Ferguson and Anne Applebaum, as well as journalist Tim Stanley.

His quotes on date rape will heap pressure on Scruton who was already facing calls to be sacked over accusations of anti-semitism linked to comments he made about financier George Soros.

In a 2014 lecture, Scruton stated: “Many of the Budapest intelligentsia are Jewish, and form part of the extensive networks around the Soros empire.”

As well as anti-semitism, Scruton has also faced accusations of homophobia – stating it as “not normal” – and saying Islamophobia is “invented.”

Scruton has known far-right Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for decades. The philosopher has expressed both criticism and support for Orban over various policies. His Tory employers have also supported Orban – despite accusations of anti-semitism over his attacks on Soros – ordering them to vote against censuring the country over breaching the ‘EU’s democratic values.’

Scruton’s troubles reflect those of Young, who’s Twitter account was expunged of thousands of tweets when he was hired as a government advisor. The missing Tweets didn’t help the Spectator columnist as journalists dug about many more of his quotes they deemed sexist, racist, homophobic, among other offenses, driving him from the position.

Germany sees Russia as stable energy partner as US demands Europe dump Nord Stream 2 pipeline https://briefnews.eu/germany-sees-russia-as-stable-energy-partner-as-us-demands-europe-dump-nord-stream-2-pipeline/ https://briefnews.eu/germany-sees-russia-as-stable-energy-partner-as-us-demands-europe-dump-nord-stream-2-pipeline/#respond Sun, 21 Oct 2018 04:18:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/germany-sees-russia-as-stable-energy-partner-as-us-demands-europe-dump-nord-stream-2-pipeline/ Europe should stop backing a Russia-led project to deliver natural gas to the continent, according to US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell. However, not all the European nations agree.

Earlier this week, Mitchell urged the European countries not to “deepen the energy dependence” on Russia, saying that supporting projects such as the Nord Stream 2 pipeline is totally unacceptable for US allies. According to the official, Washington is doing its best to protect Europeans from their excessive reliance on Russian energy.

The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project is set to deliver Russian natural gas to European consumers. The pipeline, which is set to run from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea, is expected to double the existing pipeline’s capacity of 55 billion cubic meters annually. Nord Stream 2 is projected to provide transit of 70 percent of Russian gas sales to the EU via the German route when it is built in 2019.

The pipe will go through the territorial waters of Finland, Sweden and Denmark. The project, led by the subsidiary of Russian energy giant Gazprom, is being implemented in cooperation with German energy firms Wintershall and Uniper, French multinational Engie, British-Dutch oil and gas giant Royal Dutch Shell, and Austrian energy company OMV.

The White House has repeatedly slammed the pipeline, threatening to impose sanctions on the European corporations that are participating in the project. Nord Stream 2 has also been opposed by some Eastern European nations, including Ukraine and Poland.

However, construction work is well underway with Nord Stream 2 AG, the company in charge of the project, receiving the final permits from Germany, Finland and Sweden.

Germany, which currently gets around 60 percent of its natural gas imports from Russia, is not planning to give up on the project, which is set to boost the country’s energy security.

“Russia is a well-valued, sure and stable partner, and I think it’s very important to stock up on gas and other forms of energy,” Dr. Robby Schlund, a Bundestag member for Alternative for Germany (AfD) told RT’s Ruptly video news agency during the meeting between a Russian delegation and members of the German federal parliament.

“At the moment, we have four out of five of the necessary permits in the Baltic Sea. We have the time frame, we started construction and have taken all the required steps,” said Ulrich Lissek, the head of Communications of Nord Stream 2.

Russia’s natural gas is more competitive, according to the chairman of the Energy Committee of the Russian parliament, Pavel Zavalny.

“Only Russia can provide Europe with flexible supplies of big volumes of gas both in winter and in summer,” Zavalny said. “Talks on EU energy dependence on Russia are just an attempt to politicize the process, and employ unfair business practices aiming at imposing European consumers with US liquefied natural gas on terms which are favorable for Washington.”

Europe's Home Birth Capital Sees Moms Opt for Hospital https://briefnews.eu/europes-home-birth-capital-sees-moms-opt-for-hospital/ https://briefnews.eu/europes-home-birth-capital-sees-moms-opt-for-hospital/#respond Mon, 15 Oct 2018 13:10:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/europes-home-birth-capital-sees-moms-opt-for-hospital/ Not so long ago, healthy pregnant women in the Netherlands who wanted to give birth in a hospital, rather than at home, were rare. They were usually foreigners who didn’t trust or understand the medical system. Now, says Amsterdam-based doula Maartje Bruning, a “vast majority” of her clients don’t plan to give birth at home — and before they consult with her, starting at about 20 weeks of gestation, they have “heard potential horror stories [from] peers or have read stuff online,” Bruning says.

In 2005, nearly 30 percent of Dutch babies were born at home. By 2016, that figure had plummeted to 13 percent.

Home birth has long been a standard option for Dutch women with low-risk pregnancies, even as many other nations have seen hospital births become de rigueur. And the Netherlands’ current home birth figure is still by far the highest in Europe, while the number in other countries is typically less than 1 percent. That’s partly due to an abundance of highly educated Dutch midwives who held the line in the postwar period by being both competent and far cheaper than hospital deliveries.

That still holds true today: A woman who wants to give birth in a hospital under a midwife’s care but has no complications pays a few hundred euros to do so unless the midwife finds a medical reason to refer the expectant mother for hospital services.

Gettyimages 512696797 (1)

So why the waning enthusiasm in the Netherlands for home delivery in recent years? One reason may be bureaucratic, according to Dr. Martine Hollander, an obstetrician at Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen. “Every new protocol comes up with more reasons for interventions, and for every intervention, a referral is necessary,” she explains.

The optics of giving birth may also play a part: As with most other places in the world, people in the Netherlands are inundated with American films and television — and in those fictional settings, births almost always happen in hospitals. If people see only births in hospital settings, Hollander explains, that becomes the norm. “The less people have a certain experience, the less the next generation will choose it,” she says. “Nowadays, many young women in their 20s only have girlfriends who had a hospital birth.”

Our midwives are very passionate, hardworking women.

Maartje Bruning, Amsterdam doula

There’s also the pain factor. In a hospital you can have an epidural or a similar procedure, and many women may want pain medication close by.

For Bruning, who’s been a doula for about five years, the drop-off in the home versus hospital stats can be traced to a 2008 report that found a higher rate of infant mortality in the Netherlands compared with other EU countries. That, she says, gave insurance companies and hospitals a chance to lobby the Hague to change regulations and give medical centers an advantage over midwives, who work at home and in conjunction with hospitals. “Our midwives are very passionate, hardworking women, but they didn’t have the same power in the Hague,” says Bruning, who, as a doula, often consults on home births but doesn’t have the same medical training as a midwife.

Meanwhile, in the U.S., paradoxically, home births are on the rise. They fell from being ubiquitous in 1900 to just 1 percent of births in 1969 and have remained rare — but saw an increase in popularity, particularly among White women, rising from 1.2 percent of births to 2 percent between 2004 and 2012. However, according to The Lancet, the U.S. maternal mortality rate as of 2015 was 26.4 per 100,000 births and climbing — more than four times the rate in the Netherlands, which is 6.7.

Trump sees no competition & fully intends to run for president in 2020 https://briefnews.eu/trump-sees-no-competition-fully-intends-to-run-for-president-in-2020/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-sees-no-competition-fully-intends-to-run-for-president-in-2020/#respond Sat, 14 Jul 2018 23:12:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-sees-no-competition-fully-intends-to-run-for-president-in-2020/

Donald Trump has confirmed that he is planning to run for president in 2020, not only because “everybody wants him to,” but also because there doesn’t seem to be any viable competition in the liberal Democratic camp.

“They do not have the right candidate,” Trump told Piers Morgan in an interview for the Mail on Sunday, when asked if the “liberals could be facing not two more years of you but potentially six.”

Trump baldly reiterated that, at the moment, he could not name a single Democrat who could potentially beat him. “I don’t see anybody. I know them all and I don’t see anybody,” the US President said on board Air Force One, which he reportedly plans to re-decorate with “more American” colors and fit with bigger beds.

Trump noted that “you never know what happens with health and other things,” but reassured his supporters that he “fully intend[s] to” to seek another term in the White House.

“It seems like everybody wants me to,” he said confidently, despite facing widespread protests on his UK trip, and criticism over his policies at home.

But, while Democratic opponents and critics breathlessly follow every twist and turn of the –thus far– futile Mueller probe into Trump’s alleged ‘collusion’ with Russia, a probe which they hope might eventually bring about an impeachment, the Republican president maintains vast support among his party members.

In an earlier interview with the Sun, Trump claimed that recent polls are showing the he was the “most popular person in the history of the Republican Party,” even “beating [Abraham] Lincoln.”
