The Tesla Model S.

The Tesla Model S. (credit: Wolfram Burner)

The California Highway Patrol on Friday pulled over a Tesla Model S that was traveling down the road—but whose driver appeared to be asleep at the wheel. The vehicle was traveling southbound on Highway 101 in Palo Alto.

Officers said that they were unable to get the man’s attention.

“One of the officers basically ended up going in front of the vehicle and basically tried to slow it down,” a California Highway Patrol spokesman told KCBS radio. The process took about seven minutes, and the car traveled for about seven miles before coming to a stop.

2018 Ford Mustang with unique badge seemingly confirms Bullitt edition https://briefnews.eu/2018-ford-mustang-with-unique-badge-seemingly-confirms-bullitt-edition/ https://briefnews.eu/2018-ford-mustang-with-unique-badge-seemingly-confirms-bullitt-edition/#respond Mon, 11 Dec 2017 14:34:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/2018-ford-mustang-with-unique-badge-seemingly-confirms-bullitt-edition/ When a grainy photo surfaced of a Mustang purported to be the next Bullitt edition at a video shoot recently, we were a little skeptical that it was really, truly a new Bullitt Mustang. But the latest image credited to Tony Zaleski Jr. and posted by a user named “Bullitt” at the Mustang6G.com forum seems to all but confirm the special pony car is coming. In these admittedly still grainy images, we can see that this car has a medallion badge at the back with a circle and a word in the middle. This looks very much like the medallion on the 2008 Bullitt, which featured a round crosshair design with the logo from the movie Bullitt. We can’t quite make out the word on this new version, but it’s probably a safe bet it says “Bullitt.”

2018 Ford Mustang Bullitt

Another shot of the profile also gives us a clearer look at the new wheels, which feature black centers and polished lips, much like the gunmetal pieces used on the last car. The user also reports the car had Brembo brakes and Recaro seats. The Brembo brakes could be evidence that the new Bullitt will come with the GT Performance Pack as standard equipment, meaning upgraded suspension and the shorter 3.73:1 rear axle ratio. Including this package as standard wouldn’t be surprising, since past Bullitt Mustangs have included suspension and brake upgrades. There’s also a possibility that Ford could include a small horsepower boost courtesy of a different intake, the precedent being the 2008 model that picked up an extra 15 horsepower thanks to a high-flow intake.

We expect we’ll see something about the Bullitt Mustang as early as the Detroit Auto Show. After all, Ford is shooting video promos of this car, so it must pretty much be ready to go.

–

A new Nissan Leaf EV is arriving for the 2018 model year. The second-generation electric car eschews the prior model’s dowdy styling and limited 107-mile driving range in favor of a more modern look and a minimum range of 150 miles.

–

Nissan seems to want to go beyond generational upgrades, however, by expanding the model’s lineup. A longer-range Leaf e+ trim is scheduled to arrive sometime next year with perhaps more than 200 miles of range due to trading the base car’s 40.0-kWh battery pack for a larger, 60.0-kWh unit. Now U.K. publication Autocar is reporting that Nissan also plans to introduce a sport-oriented Leaf variant.

–

–

–

The racier Leaf NISMO concept is expected to be unveiled at this month’s Tokyo auto show. A teaser of the hot hatch reveals that the model adds a hint of flavor to the new Leaf’s handsome but decidedly mainstream exterior design. Marked by a set of chunky split-spoke wheels, a redesigned front fascia, and aggressive side skirts, the NISMO concept reportedly previews a future production model.

–

–

While we can’t yet confirm any of the NISMO’s particulars—we’ve reached out to Nissan for comment—we’d be surprised if the vehicle doesn’t feature at least some meaningful chassis differences over its regular counterpart. Needless to say, we’re eager to see if Nissan can produce an EV hot hatch and whether it might even channel some of the spirit of sport-compact icons such as the B13-generation Nissan Sentra SE-R.

Tom Cruise Seemingly Injured During ‘Mission: Impossible’ 6 Stunt Jump https://briefnews.eu/tom-cruise-seemingly-injured-during-mission-impossible-6-stunt-jump/ https://briefnews.eu/tom-cruise-seemingly-injured-during-mission-impossible-6-stunt-jump/#respond Sun, 13 Aug 2017 17:40:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tom-cruise-seemingly-injured-during-mission-impossible-6-stunt-jump/ Mission Impossible 6 - Tom Cruise Injured

Even at 55 years old, Tom Cruise is still known for doing his own stunts across the various blockbusters he’s starred in over the years. The Mission: Impossible franchise has become a consistent showcase for at least one wild stunt that Tom Cruise has decided to do himself. But one of the less complex stunts on the set of Mission: Impossible 6 appears to have not gone exactly as planned.

Footage of Tom Cruise injured on the set of Mission: Impossible 6 has surfaced online after the actor attempted a jump between two buildings in London. Instead of landing on the building where he was jumping towards, he fell short and plowed into the top and side of the building, though he was able to catch himself and hoist his body to the rooftop.

After Cruise pulled himself onto the roof, he briefly continued the scene by limping off camera, almost looking like the fall short was a planned part of the stunt. But then once Cruise gets off camera, he collapses briefly, seemingly catching his breath, before stepping up to limp around the roof, pausing again to compose himself before beckoning to the wire crew on the other side of the jump to pull him back. Once unhooked from the harness on the other side, he limps away, presumably to get checked out by the medic on set.

As of now, the extent of Tom Cruise’s injury is unknown, but this wouldn’t be the first time Cruise injured himself during a Mission: Impossible stunt. During the famous Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation stunt that had Cruise hanging on the outside of a plane, the actor was hit by a runway particle. Cruise explained, “I was hit by a tiny particle from the runway and I literally thought it broke my ribs.”

Cruise was even getting injuries in the early days of the franchise when he was about 20 years younger. In the original Mission: Impossible, when the actor ran from the exploding aquarium restaurant, he hurt his ankle. Plus, during Mission: Impossible II, the actor tore his shoulder while jumping across a cliff-face.

No matter how serious the injury is, we hope Tom Cruise is doing all right and he’ll be back to work quickly. There’s no word on whether production will be delayed due to this injury, but as soon as any new information surfaces, we’ll let you know.

If you want to see how Tom Cruise injured himself on the set, unfortunately you’ll have to head over to TMZ to watch the video of the stunt gone wrong.

As the Federal Communications Commission prepares to deregulate broadband providers and eliminate or weaken net neutrality rules, the commission has not yet made a ruling on a net neutrality complaint filed against Verizon more than a year ago.

There have been tens of thousands of “informal” net neutrality complaints filed since the rules took effect in 2015, but there has been only one formal complaint. Informal complaints can be filed for free but won’t necessarily result in a ruling; formal complaints require a filing fee of $ 225 and kick off a court-like proceeding in which the parties appear before the FCC and file numerous documents to address legal issues.

The only formal net neutrality complaint was filed in July 2016 by a Verizon Wireless customer named Alex Nguyen, who alleged that the carrier has violated the rules with numerous actions that blocked third-party devices and applications from being used on its network. The complaint has its own docket, and Verizon has made several responses to the allegations, yet it has been so little-noticed that the people who wrote the FCC’s proposal to repeal net neutrality rules seemingly forgot that it existed.

Ebola virus (credit: CDC Global)

After the ghastly symptoms subside, Ebola may not be done; it may just shift to a clever stealth mode, a new study suggests.

Examining archived tissue samples from infected monkeys, researchers found that Ebola can create a cryptic viral reservoir in certain immune cells and hide in corners of the body where the rest of the immune system has little reach. The study, published this week in Nature Microbiology, echoes the reports from human Ebola survivors, who complain of lingering symptoms and complications that researchers have struggled to understand.

Overall, the evidence of persistent infections—which threaten to relapse and spark new outbreaks—adds extra concern for an already alarming pathogen. But researchers are hopeful that the study also provides a way forward for research into defeating this stage of infection.

100 evacuated in Paris suburb following ‘seemingly deliberate’ fire in apartment building https://briefnews.eu/100-evacuated-in-paris-suburb-following-seemingly-deliberate-fire-in-apartment-building/ https://briefnews.eu/100-evacuated-in-paris-suburb-following-seemingly-deliberate-fire-in-apartment-building/#respond Sun, 25 Jun 2017 13:19:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/100-evacuated-in-paris-suburb-following-seemingly-deliberate-fire-in-apartment-building/

About a hundred people were evacuated by Paris fire brigades after a fire started in an apartment building in a suburb of the French capital, local media reported. Police suspect arson, saying the fire seemed to be “deliberate.”

The “seemingly deliberate” fire started on Sunday morning at a residential building in Paris’ Boulogne-Billancourt neighborhood, AFP reported.

Firefighters were notified shortly before 7:00am local time. It took an hour to extinguish the blaze and four people were treated for smoke inhalation, a fire brigade spokesman said.

Authorities said they will investigate to determine the cause of the blaze. “It was a seemingly deliberate fire,” a police source told AFP.

The fire seems to have broken out at three separate apartments. One was completely burnt out, another was damaged by the flames, and a third saw a fire flare up outside its door. All are located on the fifth floor.

The building’s residents have been taken to a nearby college.

Boulogne-Billancourt came into the spotlight in December of last year when a fire broke out at a migrant reception center there.

One man died in that blaze after jumping from a third-floor window to escape the flames, and thirteen people were injured. Six migrants were rescued by firefighters.

An initial inspection found traces of a flammable liquid in the lobby of the six-story building, prompting further investigation.

All Things About Introvert: The Seemingly Mysterious Personality That Often Get Misunderstood! https://briefnews.eu/all-things-about-introvert-the-seemingly-mysterious-personality-that-often-get-misunderstood/ https://briefnews.eu/all-things-about-introvert-the-seemingly-mysterious-personality-that-often-get-misunderstood/#respond Fri, 16 Jun 2017 21:03:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/all-things-about-introvert-the-seemingly-mysterious-personality-that-often-get-misunderstood/

A Sneak Peek To “What is an introvert?

Introverts – shy and withdrawn, mysterious people that don’t particularly need human interaction, or do they? With all of the buzz about introverts, extroverts and ambiverts going on lately, are we sure we are not jumping to conclusions regarding someone’s personality, and more importantly, how much of the information we have is accurate and not leading to generalizing and misconceptions?

There’s no doubt that extroverts are easy to spot and recognize since they are outgoing and tend to be the center of the attention. On the other hand, introverts tend to keep everything to themselves and don’t talk too much. They tend to be misunderstood as shy, not friendly and socially disconnected.

Finally, ambiverts are perceived as being in the middle with having some of the traits that belong to introverted, and some of the extroverted personality with neither personality being the dominant one.

Carl Jung defined introversion [1] and introverted people as being completely opposite from extroversion and extroverts. He explained that while extroverts are more prone to focusing their energy outwards, introverted people are more focused on their inner life, their subjective thoughts and feelings. With no single definitive definition of introversion being constructed to this point, it is no wonder that we are prone to misconceptions and generalizing.

However, there are a great number of works and research that have managed to analyze the introverted personality type and draw insightful conclusions.

Some Obvious signs of an introvert

Since they are more focused inwardly, introverts enjoy alone time. They thrive and find inspiration from taking the time for their favorite hobby. In those moments best of their ideas are born. As opposed to popular belief, introverts are a beneficial part of the team at work. Even though they would restrain from giving their opinion, and talk only when asked, their ability to think more independently provides valuable different perspective on the matter being discussed.

As far as daily social interactions are concerned, introverted people would most often choose not to get involved in discussions that involve people who show signs of anger. According to the research [2] by psychologist Marta Ponari and collaborators of University College London, this trait of introverts may come as a result of their sensitivity to potentially negative evaluations.

Most often introverts are wrongly judged as people who don’t enjoy social interactions that much. People can sometimes perceive them as rude or uninterested. This misconception comes from the introverts’ tendency to avoid being evaluated by others, so they would always choose not to engage in small talk with strangers, or people they don’t feel truly close with.

It is also a common misconception that introverts aren’t able to withstand leader positions. Actually, introverts have the potential of being great leaders and drawing the most potential out of the team, given that the team is comprised of people who don’t need extra stimulus to perform well. [3]

How Different Types Of Introvert Act Differently?

With the more thorough research done on introversion, it has become clear that introversion is a far more complex term that has four subcategories. As the psychologist and academic Jonathan Cheek’s research done on 500 adults suggests, there are four types of introverts. Cheek has developed the STAR model [4] in order to explain the four main types of introverts: Social, Thinking, Anxious and Restrained.

1. Social introverts

Social introverts tend to rely more on their alone time for regaining energy. As Cheek explains “The idea that introverts need to alternate sociality and their recharging time, that’s very important in social introversion”.

2. Thinking introverts

People who don’t necessarily shy away from social interactions, but tend to be more introspective and inward oriented are described as thinking introverts.

3. Anxious introverts

Most anxious introverts get described as shy, due to their anxiety when around other people. Anxious introverts tend to feel anxious about how they will be perceived by others and, unlike social introverts, the anxiety doesn’t stop when they are alone. Even though they like to be in social situations, they tend to over-analyze their words and behavior and worry about how they will be interpreted by their peers.

4. Restrained introverts

Inhibited, reserved, or restrained introverts most often think before taking any actions and lack spontaneity. They will most certainly decline a last-minute call to a party, because they like to make plans and sudden events make them uncomfortable.

How are introverts Different From Extroverts?

While Carl Jung was the first to coin the terms “introvert” and “extrovert” and provided theory explaining the main differences between the two types, later research showed the differences in the brain structure of the two types of personalities as well as the different ways in which they react to stimulations and recharge their energy.

Namely, extroverts possess lower levels of arousal, therefore they are always on the lookout for new exciting adventure, while introverts, possessing higher levels of arousal, will look for activities and situations that require lower levels of arousal. [5]

Additionally, extroverts are much more adventurous than introverts due to the difference in their brain structure. The pathway of stimuli of extroverts is shorter than the pathway of introverts, therefore the stimulation process of extroverts is shorter, making them “hungry” for more excitement.

Moreover, introverts would always choose a more relaxing activity for recharging, while extroverts are more likely to choose rewards through excitement. This has to do with the fact that brain of extroverts feeds on dopamine, making them feel pleasant only through challenges and excitement, while introverts’ brain prefers acetylcholine, which creates pleasure through introspection and more self-focused activities.

Extroverts are more aggressive. Does that mean they are more successful?

With introverts getting more positive press, it is refreshing to see the negative stigma surrounding them being erased. For so long, it seems our society has been praising extroverts as go-getters and great leaders and achievers, while introverts were considered awkward and underachieving.

Although at first sight introverts may seem like their performance career-wise may seem poor, their natural abilities to listen, stay focused and calm, provide them with great benefits and make them perfectly able to achieve great success.

If we take a look at the lives and careers of some of the most successful introverts in a number of different areas, we will notice that introversion doesn’t in any way prevent people from being great at what they do. Some of the most famous and successful introverts of our time include

Albert Einstein

Bill Gates [6]

Steven Spielberg [7]

Sir Isaac Newton [8]

Mark Zuckerberg [9]

JK Rowling [10]

Meryl Streep [11]

Introverts: Core strengths and weaknesses

Focused and devoted in every situation, thoughtful to others, insightful and visionary at work, those are some of the common denominators for people with introverted personality type. These are, at the same time, their greatest strengths that make them irreplaceable and beneficial workers, partners, friends, parents…

On the other hand, being introverted usually means being perceived as slightly snobbish, or even rude to others. Also, the more inner focused nature of introverts makes them less likely to get noticed, make more friends or business contacts.

What Are The Ideal Occupations For Different Introverts?

There are plenty of great positions for introverts to thrive in depending on their natural abilities, education and preferences. As mentioned before, not all introverts are the same, therefore not every person with introverted personality will be happy in the same work position. However, certain occupations have been shown to better suit introverts as they require some of the natural strengths that introverts possess.

According to the four types of introverts, there is a list of potential jobs that would perfectly suit each type’s needs.

How introverts can improve themselves?

Introverts can face many challenges, especially at work and in social situations. Since most introverts won’t speak first at meetings, or sound convincing on job interviews, their careers can suffer as those around them don’t always see their true potential.

There is a way for introverts to how their greatest skills at work while still staying true to themselves. At meetings, they can show their great ability to focus and show their insightful and creative side, and contribute to new ideas.

They can start by asking questions to get the pressure off, and then follow the impulse and speak on the idea. Furthermore, they don’t need to become social butterflies all of a sudden, yet they can use their natural abilities to create meaningful relationships, and use it to make a few genuine connections or allies at work that would help them shine. When it comes to nailing job interviews, introverts can be truly successful if they rely on their natural abilities to prepare well, think before they speak and listen to the person they are talking to.

Since introverts prefer one-on-one conversations to group meetings, they can use their ability to connect in these situations. Moreover, as introverts don’t enjoy talking about themselves, they can show their skills in a manner they are more comfortable with – they can imagine it as sharing instead of bragging.

How To Build Better Relationships With Introvert?

Here are some guidelines on how to understand and respect your introverted friend, partner, or a kid.

If you have an introverted friend

Introverts possess some of the best qualities that make true and genuine friends. In order to keep them around, make sure not to pressure them to hang out in crowded places, as they prefer more intimate atmosphere. Also, give them time to be by themselves to recharge, and time to think before making decisions. Keep surprise adventures at a minimum.

If you are in love with an introvert

Introverts are great partners as they can provide genuine love, support and thoughtfulness to their love interest. Since they don’t act before they think things through, their partners can be assured that they are the only center of their attention. If you are in love with an introvert, make sure to respect their need for private time, don’t interrupt them, and don’t force them to make quick decisions about your lives together.

If you have an introverted kid

If you are raising and introverted child, again, make sure to respect their ways of doing things. Don’t pressure them into making a lot of new friends, having a few, genuine friends is what introverts prefer. Help them cultivate their own skills and talents instead of pressuring them to take part in activities they don’t enjoy. Be aware that they won’t always ask for help, so make sure to be observant and present in order to offer your assistance when needed.

On Monday night the Golden State Warriors defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 129-120 to win their second NBA Championship in three years.

But while the victory was enough to please Warriors fans, those that bet on Golden State to cover the spread in Game 5 left the game with an absolutely brutal taste in their mouths, all thanks to J.R. Smith.

Going into the game, the Warriors were listed in most sportsbooks as 9- or 9.5-point favorites, meaning that in order for Warriors bettors to cash in on their ticket, the Warriors had to win by ten or more points.

With the final seconds of the game ticking away and the game in hand, the Oracle crowd rose to their feet in anticipation of their title. The Warriors were sitting pretty with a 12-point lead, Steph Curry pulled up on a three-point jumper that would have served as an exclamation point, but missed.

And at the other end of the court, with literally nothing but pride at stake, J.R. Smith went and changed gambling outcomes across the country, draining a three with just 15 seconds left.

The Warriors inbounded the ball, let the clock run out, and both Warriors fans and Cavaliers bettors started their celebrations.

Needless to say, the fate of millions of dollars shifted on that one shot.

Some were ecstatic with the result.

Others were absolutely devastated.

The lesson as always, is that gambling is a cruel mistress.
