While incarcerated, Jake is recruited by Sam Ramsey (Dermot Mulroney), the leader of a mysterious agency called Section 8, which eliminates powerful people around the world. When he learns the true nature of Section 8, Jake must decide if the life of an assassin is one he wants to live. Dolph Lundgren co-stars along with Scott Adkins and Mickey Rourke.
In conversation with Digital Trends, Sesma discusses his love for the ’80s, praises Kwanten’s talent, and reveals how he shot an integral fight sequence in Section 8.

Note: This interview has been condensed and edited for length and clarity.
Digital Trends: A lot of your films apply a mainstream style of filmmaking. Why does this style appeal to you as a filmmaker?
I’m an ’80s kid. I grew up with Spielberg, John McTiernan, Lucas, Cameron, all those kinds of guys. You’re talking to a guy who, as a kid, watched Aliens, Die Hard, Indiana Jones, and all that stuff. That kind of escapist popcorn film is really ingrained in who I am as a storyteller, and I really think there’s a lot of fun to be had there. That’s the kind of film I enjoy, and I think every filmmaker is influenced by what they were influenced by as a kid, really. Whatever enchants you as a child, I think, will come out in who you are as a filmmaker.
Looking at your filmography, you’ve written and directed most of your projects, but you didn’t write Section 8. What do you look for in a script when it’s not yours?
Christian Sesma: The blueprint of it has to make sense for me. As kind of granular as it sounds, see what I can get excited for from my own movie nerdiness. [Laughs] I’m just a movie nerd at heart so something has to go, “Oh, dude. I can make that. That’s going to be like a mini-Mission Impossible or something.” I have to kind of wrap my head around it that way, and then I take the script and flesh it out from there.
Chad Law is a fantastic writer. We’re good friends in real life. He brought me this project along with Brandon Burrows, the movie’s producer. They were like, “We really think we can make something cool here. We’re putting together a pretty cool package.” It was something that I felt I could do something with on the scope, but also really just at a human level with Ryan Kwanten and his family and all that stuff.

I recently spoke to Ryan about another film, Glorious. Now, he’s the star of this action thriller. My biggest takeaway from talking to him was his commitment level to a project. That as soon as he buys in, he’s in, and he gives it his all. What stood out to you about Ryan during this process?
Exactly what you just said. Ryan is a dream lead to work with. He’s a phenomenal talent and human being. He gives it his all. I come from guerilla filmmaking. I’m self-taught so Ryan was super game to just get loose with a lot of things that other actors or people wouldn’t be so up for. I was able to shoot a lot of this in my backyard in the Coachella Valley and the Palm Springs area. A lot of this was like, “Hey. Let’s go grab these shots.”
A lot of this stuff was also improvised. There are a lot of unscripted elements that Ryan and I were really excited to explore so that was really fun. Because he’s all in, and because we kind of connected and we understood each other’s ideas for this movie, it really made it a true pleasure working with him, which is something that, for a director, makes all the difference in the world. When your lead is all in, that helps you tremendously.
With your directing style, how do you approach unscripted moments? Do you like to shoot what’s in the script first, and then give the actors a few takes to play around with ideas?
Yeah. I mean there’s that. We definitely use the script as our guideline and blueprint. Sometimes, there’s some room to play around the edges. Sometimes, there’s stuff that I feel we could add to the script, like flashbacks of the family, and his relationship with his wife and son. When you’re going through that, you start getting ideas of what could help make this better.
Section 8 has a lot of fight sequences. Take me through the process of directing a fight scene. Are you working in tandem with the stunt coordinators to choreograph every move?
Yeah. Let’s say the end sequence fight with Scott Adkins. That’s all previs out with the stunt coordinator and their team. They go through the choreography, and we’re able to work on it a couple of weeks before. Then Scott gets to set. We start working out the kinks, and then you start shooting it based on what’s called previs, which is basically like a visual storyboard. Then, you just start doing almost like a paint-by-numbers because we’ve already worked out the angles for the shots. Now, you’re doing it for real with the real cameras and lighting and crew and wardrobe. So it really is very pre-planned stuff.
What type of action sequence do you prefer? Are you a long car chase sequence guy, or a big gunfight? Maybe just good old-fashioned hand-to-hand combat?
Hmm. Good question. I probably prefer spaceships or robots. [Laughs] Good ol’ space battles. A good ol’ lightsaber battle. I don’t think you can beat a swordfight or lightsaber battle.
In action movies, a common critique usually involves the story, character development, and dialogue. Maybe the film didn’t have enough dialogue or character development and focused too much on the action sequences or vice versa. Maybe the dialogue was great, but it lacked action. How do you find a healthy balance between the action and the quieter moments?
Again, I think that goes with experience. Early on, maybe I’d be so excited to shoot an action sequence that I would miss the dramatic beats or vice versa. I think now when I’m approaching an action movie, I’ll know that the action movie has plenty of action beats in it so I’ll double down on the dramatic beats. So I know in editorial, we’ll have enough to balance them both.

Did you have a favorite scene to shoot for this film?
To be honest, I really couldn’t wait to get the family stuff done. That was probably the most exciting stuff. I know if that didn’t work and if I didn’t grab you, then you’re just kind of checked out for just another gunfight. I felt like from the moment he gets home to his final cathartic moment in the nightclub where he catches up with the guy who killed his kid, that’s just one big sequence.
That’s a sequence that I really, really like personally because it’s emotional, suspenseful, [and] dramatic. There are some action beats there. I felt like if that wasn’t done the way I wanted it to be done, I don’t know if anybody would be along fully for the right after that. People might have checked out.
Section 8 is now in theaters and streaming on AMC+.
]]>After a series of political battles, the first completed section of President Donald Trump’s border wall has been unveiled. But people are still arguing over whether it’s a wall or a fence.
The two-and-a-half-mile-long, 30-foot-tall barrier was built over eight months and unveiled by US Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen at a ceremony in Calexico, California on Friday. Nielsen pleaded for further government funding to complete the mammoth project, saying that “walls work.” She also refuted the oft-repeated claim that the barrier of steel bollards was actually just a fence.
Earlier this year, Trump unveiled eight border wall prototypes in California, some concrete and some metal structures like this one. “It’s different than a fence in that it also has technology. It’s a full wall system,” she said. “It’s a wall, this is what the president has asked us to do. It’s part of a system.”
Border security is national security. We need funding to continue building @POTUS' wall. We need personnel to secure the border. And we need laws that work for the American people. I refuse to believe that this is too complex for Congress to solve, they must address this crisis. https://t.co/FbDkF6dtyF

The ceremony celebrated the replacement of shorter, older fencing that was installed in the 1990s. On Friday, a plaque was installed on the ‘wall’ to “commemorate the completion of the first section of President Trump’s border wall,” it read.
“Walls work, it’s not my opinion,” Nielsen said. “It’s not a tagline. It’s not a political statement. It’s a fact.”
“Looking at this, I would not attempt to climb it,” she continued. “This is the wall system we are requesting Congress to fund,” she later added.
However, not everyone is convinced by Neilsen’s comments and, once again, whether it is a wall or a fence was the source of furious debate on social media.
DHS Sec Kirstjen Nielsen unveiled 2 new miles of border fencing and declared it the first new section of the Trump's border wall saying it was different than a fence cause it has technology which makes it a wall (It looks like a fence)

A Plaque Says This Fence In Southern California Is The First Completed Section Of Trump's Border Wall…but it wasn't. This is a wall section started under Obama & he is taking credit.https://t.co/aGDAd2EZSu

You are a joke, just like Trump. You acknowledged that this is a stretch of existing border fence being repaired, not a new wall. But then again, the MAGAts swallow whatever lies you spoon feed them.

C’mon now: “[T]he new structure [Nielsen visited] in Calexico is a fence, and the landing mat barrier that [it replaced was] actually a wall.” https://t.co/vM8WsZ7VSe

This year’s congressional spending bill allocated $ 1.6 billion for border security, $ 38 million of which was set aside for border wall construction. However, it specifically stated that it must be the same fencing used by previous administrations.
The construction funding “shall only be available for operationally effective designs deployed as of the date of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2017… such as the currently deployed steel bollard designs,” reads the bill, which dates back to before Trump had even built his prototypes.

The group of Jews within the AfD is aiming to hold its inaugural meeting in the German city of Offenbach on October 7, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported, citing a letter written to the paper.
The Jewish group will be an addition to the already existing Christian section of the AfD – the leader of which maintains that despite widespread claims, the party is not anti-Semitic.
“That doesn’t apply at all to what we are. The AfD is not an anti-Semitic party; we do not tolerate any anti-Semitism in the party. If that arises, if we notice it, then these people are thrown out,” Joachim Kuhs said, according to Deutsche Welle.
Still, the report seems to be a rare instance of “AfD” and “Jews” not appearing as two opposing sides in the media, which have often accused the party of having neo-Nazi links, harboring anti-Semitic views, and downplaying the horrors of the Holocaust. In June, AfD co-leader Alexander Gauland referred to the Nazi era as a “speck of bird s**t in over 1,000 years of successful German history.” Just last month, a local AfD leader came under fire after referring to man who tried to assassinate Adolf Hitler as a “coward” and a “traitor.”
Dimitri Schulz, a founding member of the planned Jewish AfD section, agrees with Kuhs, telling DPA news agency that the AfD “is the only party in Germany that makes anti-Semitism by Muslims a topic without trivializing it.”
Not everyone is convinced, however – including many Jews in Germany who can’t quite wrap their heads around why anyone from their faith would associate themselves with the AfD.
Among those angered by the news are members of the Jewish Students Union of Germany, one of whom told AFP that the party is “one of the biggest threats to Jewish… life in Germany.”
“The AfD is not getting a kosher certificate from us,” said the leader of the group, Dalia Grinfeld, who said her group is urging all Jews in Germany to join a protest in Offenbach to rally against the creation of the AfD’s Jewish section.
The row comes amid a rise in anti-Semitic crimes in Germany, with police data showing that such attacks rose by 10.7 percent in the first half of 2018, compared to the same period last year.

The console-like Linux-based PC gaming future may need a few more years before it’s ready. If you have a PlayStation 4, there’s a good chance you use it as a video viewer. However, you’ll also know that it isn’t ideal for that role — you have to hop between apps just to see what shows are worth watching. Sony is aiming to fix that. American users now have an overhauled TV & Video section that shows new and trending video from a range of services, including live channels on PlayStation Vue. It’s much like the carousel interface you see in apps for Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, complete with featured and themed sections. You can still launch the apps first if you prefer, but it’s now much easier to skip directly to what you want to watch.
You’ll also see personalized recommendations, starting with YouTube. Link your YouTube account to PSN and you’ll see suggested videos right on your PS4’s home screen. Other services are “coming soon,” Sony said.
There’s no word on international expansion, although that’s likely a question of “when” rather than “if.” Even if PlayStation Vue never goes beyond US borders, Sony still has incentives to both promote its original PlayStation TV shows and convince PS4 owners that their console is more than just a game machine. The more capable the PS4 is, the more likely you are to choose it over a rival like the Xbox One or a a media-focused hub like a Roku player.
]]>In discussions of the ongoing battle over fake news, we often hear Facebook and Google criticized for playing a hand in spreading false information. And while both have made efforts recently to stem the spread of misinformation on their platforms, they’ve each had some major missteps.
YouTube is talked about less often when it comes to fake news, though it isn’t short of scandals itself. Last year, a number of companies and groups pulled their ads once it became known that they were appearing alongside extremist content and YouTube has also had to deal with predatory comments on children’s videos, content falsely parading as being appropriate for kids and of course Logan Paul. But today, YouTube has stepped into the fake news spotlight. The number one trending video on the site earlier today was a video purporting to be evidence that David Hogg isn’t a Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student but instead an actor paid to speak out during crises.

Hogg has been one of the many students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School who have chosen to voice their opinions and concerns following the massacre that took place on their campus last week. And that spotlight has attracted hoards of trolls who have made claims ranging from Hogg being coached by his ex-FBI father to him being a paid “crisis actor.” The latter was the claim being made in the comments of the YouTube trending video. The video itself was a CBS News clip from last year that reported on an altercation that took place between a friend of Hogg’s and a Redondo beach lifeguard. Hogg was included in the news report.
Hogg, who was visiting Los Angeles during that time, published his own video about the event, but while the the CBS clip offers no evidence that Hogg is in fact a paid actor rather than a high school student, trolls have pushed it as evidence of such nonetheless. As Snopes writes, “Conspiracy theorists and trolls alike heavily implied that a months-old video (despite the facts that he readily identified himself with the same name, that people occasionally travel across the United States, and that his family moved to Florida from Los Angeles) is somehow ‘proof’ that he is a trained ‘crisis actor,’ a baseless rumor that is inevitably pushed after horrific mass shootings.”
YouTube has removed the video and a company spokesperson told us, “This video should never have appeared in Trending. Because the video contained footage from an authoritative news source, our system misclassified it. As soon as we became aware of the video, we removed it from Trending and from YouTube for violating our policies. We are working to improve our systems moving forward.”
Google, which owns YouTube, has come under fire for spreading fake news in the past. Following the 2016 US presidential election, Google search surfaced a WordPress site rife with inaccuracies about the final election numbers and after the Las Vegas shooting last October, it promoted a 4chan thread spreading misinformation about the massacre. Last year, Google took steps to prevent its search from surfacing fake news, which included adding Fact Check tags, promoting more authoritative sources and partnering with the International Fact-Checking Network. It also began to show more information on publishers, use Trust Indicators and stopped showing news from sources that don’t provide their country of origin. Last month, it also announced that it would start doing more to prevent fake news from seeping into its snippets.
when i go on facebook and click on the trending topic “david hogg,” and then on videos, it brings up a search for “david hogg actor,” which at the top includes videos from a facebook-verified users spouting conspiracy nonsense pic.twitter.com/TJBxnBxtyj
— maya kosoff (@mekosoff) February 21, 2018
But what’s next for YouTube? Though it deleted the offending video, there are plenty more out there still claiming David Hogg is an actor — which is also currently a problem on Facebook as well. YouTube’s Trending section is curated by algorithms, not people, and as today’s news failure shows, that is clearly a problem. Google has become increasingly aware that it may need more actual humans on board moderating its content and training its algorithms and it announced last year that it would hire 10,000 people to review content across its platforms. Similarly, YouTube said earlier this year that it would start manually vetting content included in its Preferred ad program following the Logan Paul scandal.
But that’s not enough. YouTube is a major platform with millions of viewers and when fake news makes its way into Trending, even if only for a short while, it can do irreparable damage. You can’t search for David Hogg anywhere without seeing conspiracy theories making wild, unfounded claims. Today’s event is just the latest issue to highlight YouTube’s content problems, and it’s going to have to do more than cut ad money and vet a handful of videos if it wants to not be a source of fake news and misinformation. It says it’s working to improve its systems, but what those efforts may be aren’t clear. Some transparency and details on what it’s going to do in the future to prevent egregious blunders like today’s would go a long way.
Maybe Logan Paul wasn’t enough to really change YouTube’s culture, but hopefully a vile smear campaign of a teenager and school shooting survivor will.

Facebook may be downplaying news in your actual News Feed, but its Watch team is headed in the opposite direction. The social network has announced that it’s creating a section in Watch that will feature breaking news stories. News partnership lead Campbell Brown didn’t say when it would launch or which outlets would show up, but it recently said the News Feed would prioritize local stories. The Watch tab could easily follow suit.
There are a few reasons why Facebook might push news videos even as it reduces its emphasis on shared articles. First and foremost, of course, is money. While you may not see many original news pieces on Watch (which would give Facebook a 45 percent cut of ad revenue), this could keep many people on Facebook and thus viewing ads. When Snapchat and YouTube are big news sources for some users, Facebook might not want to risk ceding any ground. There’s also a chance that this could filter out some fake news, although bogus videos certainly aren’t unheard of.
Whatever the reasons, this will expand Watch’s role. Most of Facebook’s recent energy has been spent on securing original entertainment programming — this pushes it closer to a balance between fun and informative material. You may have a reason to come back even if you don’t care for dramas or sports.
