Carradine recalls Dalton’s brain tumor in Season 4, which impaired the commander-in-chief’s judgment and led his advisers to consider using the 25th Amendment to replace him. Though everyone (and the country) emerged from that crisis unscathed, “one of the things that was mentioned, and that he lives with, is that [the tumor] could come back,” the actor tells TVLine. “It’s always under the surface in my mind, that sort of niggling self-doubt that will always be there ever since he had that experience.”
Sunday’s installment chronicled an incident that happened in 1983, when Dalton was CIA station chief in Nicaragua. Via flashbacks, viewers saw an op that went very wrong and ended with the death of President Sandino’s wife. In the present-day, Sandino’s son was the Central American country’s dictator-esque president himself. Dalton’s guilt over his involvement in the man’s mother’s death caused him to hold off on taking a strong stance when the Nicaraguan president OK’d a military siege against some charity workers — including a few Americans — holed up in a church.
Read on for Carradine’s take on Dalton’s daring attempt to rectify the situation in both timelines, and make sure to stick around for his take on what Conrad’s life might look like the day after Elizabeth (fingers crossed!) takes over the Oval Office.
TVLINE | If Dalton were still CIA station chief in Nicaragua, do you think he’d still be willing to throw himself into a dangerous situation with Sandino Jr. the way he did with Sandino Sr.?
No. I think he might have gained a little wisdom with age. That was somewhat reckless, and I think that kind of recklessness is the providence of youth, is it not? Perhaps if he had to do it again, I think he probably would have found a more judicious way to try to disarm the situation.
TVLINE | He never told Elizabeth that he directly approached Sandino Sr. It’s a surprise to her when she reads it in the file. They’re close friends. Why do you think he never brought it up?
Well, I think that it was…for me that would have been a case of people only need to know what they need to know, and that was not a need-to-know for her, as far as he was concerned at the time. And I think that that’s about compartmentalizing the process and not wanting to put people in a position of being involved in something that might prove to be sticky for themselves, for their own position within the agency. I think he was probably, in a certain way, protecting those who didn’t participate in that particular operation.
TVLINE | Do you think that Dalton sees the Nicaragua incident as one of the major failures of his career?
I certainly think he carries that as in his bag of mistakes that weigh on him, you know? Absolutely. Those kinds of mistakes, when they are made and the consequences of them, can lead to how one thinks forward from that, and the kinds of decisions one makes having made those mistakes.
TVLINE | I’m guessing you probably have not discussed this at all with the show, and it’s far off, but what do you think Dalton’s retirement plan could be? What will he do, first thing, the first morning he’s not president?
Sleep in. [Laughs]
TVLINE | I’ve often wondered how it feels when you go from being the leader of the free world one day to being a normal American citizen the next.
It has to be an extraordinary change. You know, we’ve watched Obama in his retirement from the presidency, and he’s remained extremely active. He’s obviously an active participant in our democracy and the preservation of such. I think he’s very committed to that, and I would imagine that Dalton, the nature of his character is such that he would probably try to remain some kind of a force for positive, forward movement in our society, in our country and in our democracy. I don’t think Dalton… He doesn’t strike me as a president who takes a whole lot of executive time.

Not that he was planning to share that with the show’s producers if they asked. Thankfully, they didn’t.
“The conversation never came up,” the Madam Secretary star recalls. “And if it had, I’m sure at that point, I would’ve lied through my teeth!”
On the day of the shoot, “They wanted me to canter up to this scene,” he says. “I remember that there was a lot of air under my butt on that ride-up.” He laughs. “They had a double come in and do the long-distance stuff for me. I was kind of chagrinned by that, and I made it a point from that moment on: I said, ‘I’m going to become a decent horseman so the next time I’m given this opportunity, I’m not going to look like such a bozo.’”
The work paid off: Bonanza was far from the last time Carradine would be called upon to mount a steed in his nearly 50-year, self-described “eclectic” TV career. Ahead of his stint as Turner Classic Movies guest programmer Monday — his selections start at 8/7c with Captains Courageous — TVLine got the veteran actor to reflect on a selection of his small-screen gigs.

Sunday’s Madam Secretary ended on an upnote of sorts: A group of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people was able to slip away from the government persecuting it and take refuge in another nation. But the underground, foreign-policy maneuvering Kat and Jay had to pull to make the rescue happen could have negative ramifications in the long-term.
Long story short: The State Department, working via a non-governmental organization, engaged Kurdish smugglers to get the LGBTQ victims from their home territory of Abkhazia to Bulgaria, which promised refuge. But the Kurds and the Turks are archenemies… which is why Elizabeth is wildly unhappy with both her policy advisor and her chief of staff by the end of the hour.
“Originally, some of the producers shared with me that an international LGBTQI storyline was coming down the pipeline, and they expressed interest in my being a part of that conversation,” says Sara Ramirez, who identifies as queer and bisexual and who has been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ issues, as well as for marginalized communities. Series star Téa Leoni “was really supportive around me participating, as well, which I really appreciate,” she adds.

Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.
And if you didn’t quite follow, don’t worry. Sunday’s episode (10/9c) of the CBS drama will make everything quite clear: The 25th Amendment provides the framework for replacing an incapacitated American president, a scenario with which Elizabeth and Russell potentially face after Dalton starts acting wildly out of character.
If you’re wondering, “Well, how outta character are we talking here?,” check out this exchange, which follows Dalton’s making a dramatic — and unvetted — threat against Russia, whom he believes launched a sonic attack on the U.S. Embassy in Bulgaria. (Press PLAY to watch the clip, then scroll down for more.)
“He’s behaving in a way that’s not his usual self, and it does cause some questioning to take place,” Carradine adds.
The atypical behavior quickly becomes a double-edged concern for the secretary of state and the White House chief of staff, who are worried about their friend and duty-bound to uphold the Constitution.
“These people who love him and are friends with him have known him a long time,” series creator Barbara Hall says. “That’s partly why they’re able to spot that he’s acting out of character and that something’s wrong. But they do have to weigh their duties [to the American people] — but they also understand that he’s someone who would want people do weigh their duties.”
She adds: “The man that they knew would want that.”
“I stand in awe, repeatedly, as to how brilliantly they anticipated the human condition,” Carradine says, pointing out that the series is “aspirational” and therefore unconnected to anything actually taking place at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. “So here we have a chance to show, yet again on our little show, how a situation might be dealt with if there was a question about the health of our Commander in Chief.”
He chuckles. ” I think it’s a wonderful hypothetical.”

Madam Secretary‘s Elizabeth & Co. couldn’t avoid a governmental shutdown in Sunday’s episode, but that was hardly the toughest blow the hour offered up: By the end of the hour that Sec. McCord’s Chief of Staff Nadine Tolliver was ending her tenure at the State Department.
Just after the episode aired, Bebe Neuwirth announced her departure from the CBS series — which she requested —via a series of tweets.
During the hour, Nadine got a call from her son, Roman, who informed her she was going to be a grandma before he asked her for a favor: Resolve a travel problem for his expectant girlfriend before the shutdown/she’s too pregnant to relocate with him to the Bay area. Nadine decided to plead her case in person before Homeland Security, and it worked.
But when Roman idly mused that it would be awesome if his mom lived closer to San Francisco, Nadine started thinking. And by the end of the episode, she’d decided: She was going to leave her position at the State Department to be closer to her family.
“I know this is not the best time, but I really need to ask you something,” Nadine told her boss just after the shutdown became a done deal. She asked for leave to spend time with Roman and his budding family. “Something tells me you’re not coming back from that leave,” a shrewd Elizabeth remarked.
“You’re right. I won’t be coming back from that leave. I love public service, but it’s gotten so vicious,” Nadine said sadly. “Somehow, we’ve become our own worst enemy. And I don’t want to spend the rest of my career fighting.”
Elizabeth lamented that they’d made a “damn good team,” and Nadine responded that it had been her “great honor” to serve SecState. They hugged, and then Nadine took one last look around and walked out of her boss’ office for the final time as she accompanied Elizabeth to bid the furloughed (aka “non-essential”) employees a sad farewell.
Neuwirth’s co-star Erich Bergen tweeted his farewell Sunday evening:
Neuwirth has been a series regular on the political drama since its debut in 2014.

A government shutdown becomes a very possible event in Sunday’s Madam Secretary (CBS, 10/9c), and guess which tightly wound chief of staff isn’t pleased with that potential outcome?
While Russell Jackson views Congress’ inability to pass a budget — and the resultant consequences — as quite frustrating, “I actually love that storyline, because it’s not too far from possible reality,” star Zeljko Ivanek tells TVLine. “It’s politics at its worst.”
He recalls that, at the end of Season 3, “We elected a president, an independent, who now has to navigate not just one opposition party, but two opposition parties and all the politics that go with that. I think there’s a lot of rich material there, and you know Russell is always interested in [President] Dalton having the widest range of possibilities and the widest range of capabilities ahead of him.”
