Shortly after the 2016 election, newly elected President Donald Trump—peeved at losing the popular vote to Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton—falsely claimed he would have won the popular vote if not for the supposed votes of 3 million illegal immigrants. The lie spread rapidly across social media—far faster than factual attempts to debunk it. And Twitter bots played a disproportionate role in spreading that false information.

That’s according to a new study by researchers at Indiana University, published in Nature Communications. They examined 14 million messages shared on Twitter between May 2016 and May 2017, spanning the presidential primaries and Trump’s inauguration. And they found it took just six percent of Twitter accounts identified as bots to spread 31 percent of what they term “low-credibility” information on the social network. The bots managed this feat in just two to 10 seconds, thanks in large part to automated amplification.

Why are bots so effective at spreading false information? Study co-author Filippo Menczer attributes their success to so-called “social bias”: the human tendency to pay more attention to things that seem to be popular. Bots can create the appearance of popularity or that a certain opinion is more widely held than it actually is. “People tend to put greater trust in messages that appear to originate from many people,” said Menczer’s co-author, Giovanni Luca Ciampaglia. “Bots prey upon this trust by making messages seem so popular that real people are tricked into spreading their messages for them.”

  • Researchers from KU Leuven university in Belgium demonstrated that hackers can secretly clone the key fob of a Tesla Model S and steal the car within seconds — and with only $ 600 worth of simple computing and radio equipment, WIRED reports.
  • The researchers brought their findings to Tesla — which rewarded them for exposing the security flaw — and Tesla responded by adding a software update with two factor authentication using a PIN code, and it offered updated key fobs to customers with additional security. 
  • However, if Model S drivers haven’t updated their software and don’t have a new key fob, their cars are still theoretically vulnerable to this type of theft.

A savvy car thief could drive off with a Tesla Model S by using just a few, relatively inexpensive pieces of computing hardware and some radios — at least, the thief could have until recently, when Tesla fixed an overlooked vulnerability in its cars’ security systems.

A group of researchers from KU Leuven university in Belgium demonstrated that Tesla Model S key fobs can be cloned, and the cloned signal can then be used to unlock the vehicle and start the engine — all without the owner realizing, WIRED reports.

The UK has recently been hit with a heatwave and This Morning  felt they needed to do something about it. 

With temperatures hitting over 30 in parts of the country, many were begging for rain.

Enter This Morning, who aired a rain dance performance in a desperate bid to help the UK. 

It seems like the ritual worked, with Britain being battered by rain showers over the weekend, causing chaos to many plans.

And This Morning felt the need to apologise for the weather as the show opened today. 

The show started with a blank screen, explaining how sorry the ITV show was for the heavy thunderstorms over the weekend.

And when Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford appeared, they looked coy. 

Ruth giggled: “We are very, very sorry about that rain dance.”

Eamonn added: “We were trying to do a good thing but actually you were seeing a normal British summer.

“Basically every other day looked like that,” he insisted.

Meanwhile, viewers were loving the opening of the show today and flocked to Twitter to share their thoughts. 

One said: “If anyone had their plans for a #bbq on the #weekend rained on (pun intended), I think we found the culprits!”

Another laughed: “[Laughing emojis] @ the rain dance.”(sic)

A third shared: “Sorry about the rain dance #thismorning!”

Eamonn has had a busy day after taking part in a heated obesity debate on Good Morning Britain. 

Weight loss expert Steve Miller this morning argued that doctors ought to be informing their patients if they are approaching obesity.

He even went on to claim that host Eamonn was fat, and that he could do with losing some weight.

But model Gemma Cruickshank was not having it, as she felt patients being told they are too fat is detrimental to their motivation.

After a seriously heated debate, Eamonn stopped the conversation and exclaimed: “Steve, I’m going to be honest with you: Shut up.”
