A Ukrainian parliament hearing on a high-profile murder became heated after the prosecutor general lashed out, calling an MP barely printable names and reportedly saying “suck my c**k” after a vote of confidence.

The Rada, the Ukraine parliament, has witnessed many heated debates and quite a few fistfights. But the Tuesday session will probably be well remembered thanks to an impassioned speech by Prosecutor General Yury Lutsenko, who spared no insults for people criticizing his handling of high-profile investigations.

Lutsenko, who is known for getting his job two years ago despite having no background in jurisprudence, was called to the parliament to give MPs an update on the murder of activist Katerina Gandzyuk. A vocal critic of the government in general and the law enforcement in particular, she was attacked with acid in July.

After three months of agony, she succumbed to her injuries last week, sparking outrage among Ukrainians who accused the authorities of a failure to solve the crime.

After several MPs criticized Lutsenko’s handling of the case, his nerves were apparently on the brink. He marched to the podium to give them a piece of his mind using the terms such as a “gang of scum shedding fake tears”, “collecting interests in blood” and “a young ignoramus, who spills his brain diarrhea right in this chamber” to describe his opponents and said the country cannot tolerate MPs who “do not a damn thing and only know how to babble on TV”.

He said he had enough of this and was going to resign. The parliament speaker even called for a non-binding vote. It showed that if a motion to dismiss Lutsenko were submitted, the parliament would vote against. The prosecutor, according to at least one eyewitness account, told someone in the chamber to “suck my c**k” after the vote as he was leaving for a break.

As of Wednesday, Lutsenko’s resignation was reportedly sent to his friend and patron, President Petro Poroshenko. But in Ukraine this hardly indicates an actual intention to resign. The country is to elect a new president and a new parliament next year, and losing a key ally is against the interests of Poroshenko, whose approval ratings remain in single digits despite already spending months on various publicity exercises.

While verbal skirmishes are common in MMA, Russian UFC star Khabib Nurmagomedov, who is preparing to face Conor McGregor in October, has become involved in an explosive social media exchange with Russian rap artists.

The unlikely conflict with the rappers originates in an Instagram post by Nurmagomedov in the middle of August.

Back then, the UFC lightweight champion posted a video showing a large crowd, mostly consisting of women, at a rap concert in his native Dagestan, complete with the caption: “Modern Dagestan. Is this what was bequeathed to us by righteous predecessors?”

The post from the fighter, who is known for his religious and ultra-conservative views, sparkled a massive debate among Russian internet users and beyond. The row was also mentioned amid the cancellation of a concert by Russian rap singer Igor Krid, who was set to perform in Dagestan’s capital city of Makhachkala on September 9.

The show organizers were forced to call off the event, referring to “safety concerns” and a “tense atmosphere,” while Krid himself said he had “never received so many threats before.”

Reacting to the news, Nurmagomedov posted an Instagram story citing Krid’s concert cancelation and captioning it: ‘Not a big loss.’

The head of Krid’s promotional company Black Star, Russian rap star Timati (real name Timur Yunusov), posted a video addressing Nurmagomedov.

“I’ve hear your statements regarding what (people) should be listening in Dagestan and what not,” said the 35-year-old musician.

“I thought that your opinion on the matter had been exaggerated by the media. But after I checked your Instagram where you say that this is ‘not a big loss,’ after Igor Krid couldn’t come to Dagestan…”

“I understand that some songs that contain love lyrics might not be liked by you, but you have to respect the opinions of others. Supporting the wave that goes against artists’ visits, because they aren’t liked by you personally – that doesn’t seem right. We are not calling for anyone to boycott your fights. That would be ridiculous,” added the rapper, while also inviting Nurmagomedov to call him, citing the fact that they have mutual friends.

Nurmagomedov’s answer came shortly after, and was also posted on Instagram.

“Scum will pay for their words, I’m just too busy for you, and if someone doesn’t like my calls, you don’t have to address (them), I am not forcing anyone, but telling me that I don’t have a right to (have) my opinion is ridiculous. Some demons won’t tell you what to do and what not to, I have other people for that, the ones I am listening to and consider (their advice),” said the 29-year-old UFC champion.

It’s not the first time Nurmagomedov’s actions outside of MMA have sparked controversy. At the beginning of August he was criticized for publishing a video showing his cousin Abubakar Nurmagomedov appearing to offer money to homeless men in the US to do push-ups, while Khabib can be heard laughing in the background.

In April, just days before his championship fight in Brooklyn, Nurmagomedov confronted one of McGregor’s teammates, Artem Lobov, who previously called the Dagestani “a coward” in an interview with Russian media.

A video of the incident went viral and eventually led to a reaction from McGregor, who flew to New York and attacked a bus carrying Nurmagomedov and other fighters.

Days after prisoner survival game Scum came out in Steam Early Access, players discovered their criminal characters could be given Nazi-related tattoos. Today, its publisher Devolver Digital scrubbed the customization options from the title and apologized.

Players on Reddit and Steam noticed that the Scum Supporter Pack DLC included content with the numbers “14” and “88,” well-known neo-Nazi references. Another tattoo included the Iron Cross and skull, which, while not nearly as controversial as the Nazi Swastika, is still used by neo-Nazis. As Polygon reported, all had been removed from the game as of this morning (the left image is from Reddit, the right from Polygon).

While these tattoos fit the game’s lore — every player is a prisoner convicted of serious crimes, and neo-Nazi tattoos aren’t unknown in prison populations — they upset some players. Predictably, others on Reddit and Steam forums argued that these symbols fit the fiction, but it seems Nazi imagery was too hot-button for Devolver or the team that created the game to ignore. The publisher provided this statement to Polygon:

“Devolver Digital has become aware of tattoos representing neo-Nazi symbology in the newly released prison survival simulation game Scum. We do not agree with use of this symbology or any hateful content, regardless of intention.

The use of the tattoo was intended to assist in portraying a realistic element of prison culture and the horrid elements within it. This content has been patched out as of this morning, and Devolver Digital are currently conducting a full review of all assets and content in the game with Gamepires. We strongly condemn any and all use of hateful symbology in our games and agree it should have never been in the game regardless of creative intent or realism. Devolver Digital apologizes unreservedly.”

While Scum’s developers at the Croatia-based studio Gamepires gave this statement to Polygon:

“Recently we patched out content from Scum that included neo-Nazi symbols. Our intention was to create an atmosphere of the worst of the worst criminals in Scum, and to portray the horrible type of people who would find themselves in a “fight to the death” situation for a futuristic reality show where the worst criminals are pitted against one another.

Since our initial response on our forums we’ve discussed this as a team and with our publisher and agree wholeheartedly that this content was unnecessary, should not have been included, and have removed it. We apologize for this misstep and promise to our fans that we will take more caution in our approach moving forward.”

This is a bit of a black eye for Devolver, which tweeted out that Scum‘s launch was its biggest ever. The scrappy indie publishing house releases off-kilter and hyperviolent games like My Friend Pedro and Genital Jousting, respectively, and is known for taking swings at AAA gaming at every E3, lambasting the industry while portraying itself as a perennial underdog. But neo-Nazi imagery has become intolerable material at all levels of gaming: Last fall, Bungie swiftly removed icons from a piece of armor in Destiny 2 that bore a resemblance to a hate symbol.

Facebook has turned its politically correct ire on dozens of female comedians who, sardonically or otherwise, referred to men as either “trash” or “scum” – an act which the tech giant now considers a form of hate speech.

The comments were not directed or targeted toward any specific men but were instead responses to alleged harassment they had received online. Whether these were genuinely held beliefs, simple hyperbole or knee-jerk reactions to genuine harassment has yet to be determined. Facebook’s policy simply bans offending users for a period of up to 30 days for a first-time “hate speech” offense.

“I personally posted men are scum in November and I received a seven-day ban. It’s still ongoing. Two days and 23 hours left,” said comedian Alison Klemp, as cited by The Daily Beast. Men are now considered a protected class on the social media platform, according to a report by ProRepublica.

Following discussion of the issue of “Facebook jailing” in a private group of roughly 500 female comedians on the platform, the women staged a mass protest on November 24 by posting some iteration of “men are scum” to their Facebook timelines. Almost all were subsequently banned.

Comedian Marcia Belsky has previously, and publicly, declared a ‘war on men,’ but this appears to fall under the realm of satire or comedy as far as Facebook is concerned. Belsky is one of the most vocal critics of Facebook’s haphazard approach to censoring alleged, but ill-defined, hate speech.

Despite her pugnacious rhetoric, she does not, it would appear, think all men are scum.

Her comedic contemporary Kayla Avery holds far stronger views on the hate speech crackdown, however. Avery has set up both a website and a Twitter handle for women to share the Facebook jailings online. “Facebook is scum and bans women & people of color to protect men,” reads the Twitter bio. Avery also alleges that Facebook is a white supremacist institution.

Facebook, and other social media giants, have long-grappled with the concept of free speech versus the right to refuse service to any and all users they deem disruptive.

Now, so-called ‘alt-right’ trolls such as Milo Yiannopoulos, feminist activists and comedians and even the President of United States Donald Trump are subject to the whims of Zuckerberg’s and Dorsey’s army of anti-hate speech police, however low-level they may be within the respective companies.

For context, Facebook alone has hired 7,000 content moderators to surveil its estimated 2 billion users. The company is deliberately obtuse when describing, but never defining, its rules and guidelines surrounding hate speech infractions.

“We remove content, disable accounts and work with law enforcement when we believe that there is a genuine risk of physical harm or direct threats to public safety. Learn more about how Facebook handles abusive content,” the company wrote on its community standards page.

At present, in the US at least, there is no overarching definition of hate speech, making it purely subjective, observational and subject to change depending on which way the cultural wind is blowing.

The 52-year-old, who drove in to the House of Commons, stabbed and killed a heroic police officer and mowed down a crowd of innocent civilians in a horrifying attack in the heart of London before he was shot dead, was finally named by police last night, while authorities have revealed they have nine people in custody linked to the slaughter. 

Discussing the knife-wielding killer on the morning new show today, hosts Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway were joined by Major General Chip Chapman who claimed Masood wasn’t considered a high-profile threat because of his age.

“He had great capabilities, but limited resources – there was only a certain number of resources he can use. And his age profile was slightly different from a normal attacker. 

“Typically you’d expect someone to be in their low twenties but this guy was 52.”

Garraway suggested Masood, who was born Adrian Russell, may have been radicalised during his time in prison and called for authorities to crack down on convicts.

“He first went in to prison in 1983 and his last stint was in 2003,” said Chapman. “There are many pathways to radicalisation, which we call peer-to-peer.”

Chapman hit back at suggestions that a major attack on the UK capital was inevitable, and urged the public to come forward with any information they may have to prevent further casualties. 

However, many Good Morning Britain viewers at home called for a ban on giving Masood any coverage whatsoever, with one posting: “He doesn’t deserve to have his name in writing! We need to be looking into prisons, mental health to try and stop radicalisation!”

Another fumed: “Why keep talking about the name and life of the cowardly animal who killed and injured so many on Wednesday. He doesn’t deserve it,” which was followed by: “I can’t understand why the media give him the right to a name just refer to him as terrorist as that’s what he is.”

“Please don’t mention his name again don’t give these Scum the notoriety they want all media should stop doing this we do not care,” cried a particularly disgruntled audience member.

Yesterday’s GMB saw Susanna Reid and Piers Morgan reporting live from Westminster when they were both hailed for their impassioned anti-terror message.

As the Netherlands gears up for its general election in March, Dutch far-right politician Geert Wilders is laying out his stall to the electorate, including a promise to crack down on “Moroccan scum” in the country.

During a campaign walkabout on Saturday in the town of Spijkenisse, described by Reuters as an “ethnically diverse industrial area,” Wilders, flanked by security personnel, reporters, supporters, and protesters, raised the issue of “the Islamisation of our country.”

“The Moroccan scum in Holland… once again not all are scum… but there is a lot of Moroccan scum in Holland who make the streets unsafe, mostly young people… and that should change,” he told reporters.

“If you want to regain your country, if you want to make the Netherlands for the people of the Netherlands, your own home, again, then you can only vote for one party.”

The Freedom Party leader tweeted a link to an article detailing his remarks, as well as numerous pictures of him with his supporters.

Wilders was convicted in December of discrimination and inciting hatred by a Dutch court after calling for “Fewer! Fewer! Fewer!” Moroccans in the country, as well as calling them “scum.”

Despite his controversial statements, Wilders and the Freedom Party lead opinion polls with 17 percent, ahead of the March 15 election. His party’s top priorities are to ban Muslim immigration, shut down all mosques and to leave the European Union.

“Despite all the hate and fear-mongering of the elite both in Britain and Brussels, people took their fate in their own hands,” he said. “I think that will happen in Holland, in France, Austria and in Germany.”

His views have angered many of his political rivals, however, with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte attacking Wilders and his party last month in an advert published in a number of newspapers.

“If you live in a country where you get so annoyed with how we deal each other, you have a choice. Get out! You don’t have to be here!” the advert read.
