High fees down under

PAUL KEATING, a former prime minister of Australia, calls the country’s superannuation system “the envy of the developed economies”. In many ways, it is. The “super”, as Aussies call their private-pension provision, was a crowning achievement of Mr Keating’s premiership. In 1992 he made it compulsory for employers to set aside 3% of all but the very lowest-income workers’ wages. The payment has since crept up to 9.5%, and, by law, will rise further in 2021.

Today 15m working Australians are sitting on a nest-egg for retirement. With assets of about A$ 2.6trn ($ 1.9trn), their private-pension pot has grown into one of the largest in the world. It is almost universal, which should relieve pressure on the means-tested public-pension system. Australia, in other words, has less reason to panic about supporting retiring baby-boomers than most other countries.

Last week, developers on OpenBSD—the open source operating system that prioritizes security—disabled hyperthreading on Intel processors. Project leader Theo de Raadt said that a research paper due to be presented at Black Hat in August prompted the change, but he would not elaborate further.

The situation has since become a little clearer. The Register reported on Friday that researchers at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands have found a new side-channel vulnerability on hyperthreaded processors that’s been dubbed TLBleed. The vulnerability means that processes that share a physical core—but which are using different logical cores—can inadvertently leak information to each other.

In a proof of concept, researchers ran a program calculating cryptographic signatures using the Curve 25519 EdDSA algorithm implemented in libgcrypt on one logical core and their attack program on the other logical core. The attack program could determine the 256-bit encryption key used to calculate the signature with a combination of two milliseconds of observation, followed by 17 seconds of machine-learning-driven guessing and a final fraction of a second of brute-force guessing.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A senior Trump administration rail safety official resigned on Saturday after questions were raised about whether he was conducting outside work after taking the post, the US Transportation Department said.

The department said in a statement Saturday that Heath Hall, who had served as the US Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) acting administrator until last month, had resigned “effective immediately.”

The department added it “was unaware of the information that is being reported regarding outside work Heath Hall took on during his time at FRA, but those allegations, if true, are troubling.”

Politico reported Saturday it had raised questions about whether Hall was simultaneously working as a public relations consultant for a Mississippi sheriff’s department.

Hall, who started work in June as deputy FRA administrator and served as acting administrator for more than six months, took a leave of absence last month for family reasons.

In January, FRA chief counsel Juan Reyes was named acting deputy administrator and has been running the agency on a day-to-day basis.

According to Hall’s financial disclosure report reviewed by Reuters, Hall agreed his “individually owned consulting business…will remain dormant during federal service.” Politico quoted a former FRA official who said that Hall was continuing to receive calls about the sheriff’s department while at the federal agency.

Hall could not immediately be reached Saturday.

During Hall’s tenure at the Federal Railroad Administration, there were a number of high-profile rail crashes.

In December, US Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao urged the nation’s railroads and transit agencies to take all possible measures to meet deadlines to install a safety system called positive train control to prevent crashes.

Since then, FRA officials have held meetings with at least 29 transit agencies and railroads to discuss the status of the technology designed to prevent derailments or crashes caused by excessive speed.

A US House of Representatives committee plans to hold a hearing Thursday on the status of PTC efforts, including Amtrak’s chief executive and Reyes.

Republicans complain Senate Democrats have delayed a vote for months on the nomination of Ronald Batory, a former Conrail president, to head the FRA after he was unanimously approved by the Senate Commerce Committee in August.

Yesterday, I reported that competitive gamer Billy Mitchell may have misled record keepers with some of his best Donkey Kong scores. But while we were getting details of that scandal, the current Donkey Kong world-record holder Robbie Lakeman was setting a new high score. Lakeman beat his previous best of 1,230,100 points with 1,247,700. The record-keeping officials at Donkey Kong Forum and Twin Galaxies have verified the score.

The 3 hour and 49 minute playthrough had Lakeman maximizing his score through skillful jumps over obstacles and through some friendly random-number generation. You can watch the full playthrough right here:

Lakeman may still have better scores yet to come, and he could break the 1.25 million barrier next.
