After initially saying the Saudi version of journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s accidental death seems plausible, Donald Trump now insists that he is not yet “satisfied” with their answer, but won’t pull out of trade deals with Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia said on Saturday that the Washington Post columnist had died in an accidental “fistfight” that erupted inside its consulate in Istanbul on October 2, and announced the first arrests in the probe. While the US president immediately welcomed the news as a “great step,” reluctant to endanger multi-billion-dollar trade deals with the Crown, Trump said he finds the explanation credible yet was waiting for more information from Riyadh before any sanctions could be introduced against the Gulf kingdom.

“I’m not satisfied until we find the answer,” Trump told reporters in Nevada on Saturday. “Nobody seems to know [where Khashoggi’s body is]. It is a concern. We like to find out where it is.”

“With all that being said, we have $ 450 billion, $ 110 billion of which is a military order…I think it’s over a million jobs – that is not helpful for us to cancel an order like that. But there are other things which could be done, including sanctions,” Trump noted.

Explaining that he was planning to discuss the investigation with the Saudis “soon,” Trump promised to have an “answer” by Tuesday.

Meanwhile, concerned over the journalist’s fate, twenty-two senators sent a letter to Trump demanding an independent probe into Khashoggi’s disappearance and alleged murder, under the Global Magnitsky Act. Under the 2016 law, the White House has 120 days to conduct the probe and impose sanctions on those responsible. Trump promised to work with Congress on the issue.

Khashoggi entered the Saudi Arabian consulate in the Turkish capital of Istanbul on October 2 and hasn’t re-emerged since. Turkish officials, mostly on condition of anonymity, blame the Gulf country for the brutal killing of Khashoggi, who was a known critic of the Saudi regime and Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman in particular.

The Conservative MP and leading supporter claimed the European Union would want to secure an agreement with the UK over the current Open Skies arrangement so their citizens can continue travelling across the Atlantic.

The former Tory leader told Good Morning Britain: “nobody from Europe is going to be flying across the Atlantic” without an agreement on Open Skies.

He said: “On the Open Skies issue, the imperative for the EU is to make sure that they do sign up with the UK for that.

“Because the Civil Aviation Authority, the British, is the third largest in the world.

“It dominates all the transatlantic flights.

“Nobody from Europe is going to be flying across the Atlantic if they don’t have an Open Skies agreement with the UK.

“The imperative is as much on their side as ours to get these functional things moving and I think they should be able to be doing that.”

Speaking on Pienaar’s Politics on Sunday, he added: “If they don’t, let’s just say for a second, the EU didn’t agree to do Open Skies, that means all the routes across the Atlantic are shut to them.

“They can’t fly to New York on the Polar routes, on the Northern routes because we control them.

“Did you know that the Civil Aviation Authority, outside of the EU, is the third-largest aviation authority in the world?

“It controls about 70 percent of the EU’s flying. The idea that it’s us somehow begging for a flying deal is absurd.”

British airlines can currently offer services to anywhere they want to within the because of the bloc’s common rules for aviation, also known as the European Common Aviation Area arrangements (ECAA).

Britain is also a member of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) which sets the rules of flying safety throughout the EU.

A “no deal” Brexit would see the UK leave the ECAA and no longer be under the jurisdiction of the EASA without the guarantee flights could take off or land in Britain.

Michael O’Leary, the CEO of Ryanair, has repeatedly warned flights could be cancelled if there is a Brexit no deal.

Last week the Irish Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, warned the UK it might not be able to use Irish airspace in the event of no deal in negotiations.

A spokeswoman for the Prime Minister told the Irish Independent: “It’s wrong to claim that Ireland could simply stop the UK from flying over its land as a result of Brexit.

“The reason we say that is because overflight rights are not guaranteed by the EU, rather by multilateral treaty which both ourselves and Ireland have signed up to.”

“We know of the order to purchase eight gunship choppers for the Mexican Navy, made to the government of the United States, for a total value of 25 billion pesos, that purchase will be canceled, because we cannot [afford] this expense,” Lopez Obrador said Wednesday.

Washington approved the sale of choppers to the Mexican Navy together with multi-mode radars, night vision devices, and other sensors to help its neighbor combat organized crime and drug-trafficking. The deal, worth some $ 1.36 billion, also included a package of armaments, such as Hellfire missiles, lightweight hybrid torpedoes, and machine guns.

In addition to the helicopters, the newly elected leader ordered his team to contact Boeing to negotiate selling Peña Nieto’s 787 Dreamliner back to the company. Back in 2016, the plane (named ‘José María Morelos y Pavón’) cost the country $ 218.7 million, which the government agreed to repay over the next 15 years. “The idea is to sell it, not lose money, sell it for what it’s worth, but I’m not going to get on that plane,” the politician vowed.

Lopez Obrador, an outspoken critic of Donald Trump, received around 53 percent of votes to win the presidential race earlier this month. Honoring his campaign promises, on Wednesday he promised to slash government officials’ salaries, as well as end the practice of lifetime pensions for former presidents. “It is time for the government to tighten its belts,” he stressed.

The French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo has caused offence once again, this time angering Romanians, after it likened that country’s tennis champion Simona Halep to a Roma scrap metal dealer.

The controversy surrounds a cartoon in the magazine which showed Halep clutching her recently won French Open trophy and shouting “Old Iron! Old Iron!”

The depiction, believed to be a reference to the fact that some members of the Roma community, who make up some 3 percent of France’s population, have traditionally made a living from gathering scrap metal.

This didn’t take long to anger Romanians, many of whom took to social media to express their disapproval.

One person tweeted directly to Charlie Hebdo, calling the illustration “racist” and saying that “as a Romanian, this makes me sad.”

Another Romanian tweeted directly to French President Emmanuel Macron. “Is this the type of country you run? I demand a public apology…” he wrote.

One person gave Charlie Hebdo a “f**k you,” saying that Romanians stood by the magazine’s side when gunmen killed 12 people at its Paris office in January 2015.

Twitter user @Nicoleta_020 had some strong words for the magazine, saying “it is clear you deserved what happened in 2015 because you people are horrible.”

One person said the magazine is lucky that Romanians are “neither gypsies or islamists because 2015 would repeat itself from the garbage you talked about Simona Halep.” The comment references the fact that the magazine’s depiction of the Prophet Mohammed is believed to have been the principal motive for the massacre by the Islamist attackers.

The depiction of Halep also inspired the phrase “Je Suis Simona,” with one person tweeting the cartoon version of the tennis player giving the middle finger.

At least one person had a sense of humor about it all, implying that the cartoon actually looked like France’s first lady, Brigitte Macron.

When asked for comment, Halep said she wasn’t in a position to do so, according to AP. Meanwhile, the French ambassador to Romania, Michele Ramis, has defended “freedom of expression and a free press,” adding that the cartoon “doesn’t at all represent French public opinion.”

The my15 trentbarton service will be adding extra pick-up points across South Derbyshire, North-West Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire, as well as other places in the East Midlands region, helping holidaymakers beat expensive airport parking charges and reach the airport on schedule. 

The changes came into effect on Sunday March 25, including new stops at Shardlow and Castle Donington which go directly to the airport. 

It also connects holidaymakers starting from Ilkeston, Stapleford and Sandiarce.

The service will run hourly from 5am to midnight, seven days a week and cost £5 one-way or £10 return. 

It’s great news for the 4.3 million passengers that pass through the airport every year. 

However, “it’s not just for jet setters”, a press release from trentbarton says.

“10,000 people work at or near East Midlands Airport and a potential 20,000 new jobs are set to be created at the largest pure freight airport in the UK”.

It will also “play a vital role in connecting Erewash [a local borough in east Derbyshire] to jobs, and the beaches across Europe”. 

It’s expected the new route will take around one hour between Ilkeston, in Derbyshire and East Midlands Airport, although it peak times this may rise to one hour and fifteen minutes. 

The exciting new service is also expected to increase job opportunities in the region, with the potential to create 20,000 new jobs.

The news coincides with the creation of 1,400 jobs thanks to the building of a new UPS parcel sorting and delivery complex next door. 

Tom Morgan, director of service delivery at trentbarton, said to Burton Mail: “Linking local communities to such a developing employment hub is incredibly important for the region and should have a positive effect on the local economies. We are very excited by the changes and expect them to be warmly received by our customers.

“There are of course some things that won’t change, such as our friendly passionate driving team, who have become renowned for delivering excellent customer service over a number of years.”

Despite the airport closing last week due severe weather conditions caused by the ‘Beast from the East’ and Storm Emma last week, East Midlands is back up and open for business as usual. 

The airport, located in Leicestershire, flies to over 90 business and leisure destinations including Dublin, Belfast and Edinburgh. It also flies to summer sun destinations in Europe such as Lanzarote, Malaga and Tenerife. East Midlands Airport is a vibrant hub, drawing in 6,000 jobs and generating £300 million for the region.

The battle between a male tiger and a female sloth bear in India’s Maharashtra was captured on film. The violent footage makes for tense viewing.

The epic fight happened at Tadoba National Park in Maharashtra on Wednesday. The video was shared by the Bamboo Forest Safari Lodge in Tadoba and filmed by naturalist Akshay Kumar.

The video shows the tiger spotting the bear and pursuing it through the trees. The bear and tiger then face each other and start to fight as one of the bear’s cubs looks on.

The two roll around in the bush as they struggle. The tiger appears to be getting the better of the bear, catching her with his paws and biting at her body. The pair then break apart and go head to head, before wrestling on the ground and biting one another’s heads.

The tiger again seems to have overpowered the bear, and digs his teeth into the animal’s neck as she struggles to break free. Eventually, she does and chases the tiger away. The pair clash again, each baring their teeth, before the tiger runs into the water to escape the ferocious bear.

”Finally he gives up and the sloth bear disappears,” the video says. “T54 [the tiger] comes back to the waterhole totally exhausted and tired.”

Kumar told NDTV the tiger is a seven-year-old called Matkasur, who had marked the water as his territory.

The Act was scrapped in Scotland and Ireland, though it remains in Britain’s statutes and is to this day still enforced.

“It’s hard enough being in one of the most vulnerable situations imaginable in this country without them [rough sleepers] feeling like they are being hunted, pushed around and harassed by authorities,” Alex Kumar, who launched the petition, told RT.

According to the Act, police are given powers to arrest and detain for up to three months anyone found “lodging in any barn or outhouse, or in any deserted or unoccupied building, or in the open air, or under a tent, or in any cart or waggon, not having any visible means of subsistence.”

A Freedom of Information (FOI) request revealed that in England and Wales, between 2016 and ‘17, there were 1,810 prosecutions under the Act, and as recently as 2015, the number was more than 3,000, the New Statesman reports.

Kumar – whose petition has garnered 14,000 signatures – said the anachronistic law, which faced criticism when it was passed in the 19th century, is just “ridiculous” in modern times. The campaigner added that authorities should acknowledge that homelessness is not a “criminal issue,” but a “humanitarian crisis.”

MPs from across the political spectrum have previously called for relevant sections of the Act to be repealed, including current Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott.

Kumar hit out at the government’s failure to appropriately address the issue with what he deems a “barbaric” piece of legislation, saying: “I think they haven’t really addressed the Vagrancy Act. If there were an open debate on the Act no real case would be made in favour of repealing it.

“I don’t think there is any real argument for keeping it and that is why the government has not engaged in a real debate.”

It comes after the Windsor and Maidenhead Tory council leader Simon Dudley sparked widespread outcry after he suggested removing all homeless off the streets for the royal wedding between Prince Harry and American TV star Meghan Markle later in May.

Kamur said the scandal “wasn’t just the story of one bad man… cleansing the streets of homeless.”

It is in fact the law itself, he claims, that “allows for authorities to move on rough sleepers, harass, arrest and prosecute them.”

He said local authorities are “trying to push the problem” of homelessness out of their jurisdiction, and the “endemic” way of doing so is through the removal of rough sleepers.

Kamur said this is “fitting” with Dudley’s approach.

CRUISE stops in Majorca and Ibiza may soon be a thing of the past thanks to a battle between tourist organisations and the Balearic government. 

The Balearic Islands, a group of islands including Formentera, Ibiza, Menorca and Majorca, has long been a haven for tourists.

However, the government last summer announced they were doubling their controversial tourist tax, forcing holidaymakers to pay up to €4 extra a day.

Previously, cruise passengers were exempt from this tax as long as they were on land for less than 12 hours.

However, the proposed changes will force them to pay €2 a day – ignoring the fact they are there for less than a day period.

Now, according to Balearic press, the Cruise Lines International Association, the largest body of its kind in the world, has threatened legal action against the Balearic government. 

The line looks after a number of cruise companies such as Norwegian, Royal Caribbean and Tui, which often bring visitors to the island.

It has dubbed the tax illegal and urged the government to change its mind, warning that liners might go elsewhere if the tax comes in.

The changes are planned to come in to effect during the summer of 2018, unless something changes in the mean time. 

It could encourage tourists to travel to rival holiday destinations such as Turkey and Greece.

Turkey was recently announced as the third most popular holiday destination for Britons this summer, despite terrorist activity earlier this year.

It is home to Istanbul, a popular city for tourists to visit because of its rich cultural history.

Earlier this year, the Balearic tourism chief Biel Barcelo also announced a campaign to tackle unruly behaviour on the Balearic islands.

He said: “The tourism sector must also collaborate to improve tourism and to improve our image and the first step to collaborate is to comply with the rules.”

While it is unclear what these rules are, it is likely they will apply to the party image associated with the island.

This might include restrictions on what constitutes acceptable public behaviour and stricter alcohol laws.
