The Houston Rockets had their most impressive win in recent weeks by beating the Raptors, who are second in the Eastern Conference.

The win kept the Rockets fifth in the Western Conference, secure in the playoff places.

Harden also maintained his record of consecutive 30+ point games.

He has scored more than 30 in his last 22 games, and showed no signs of stopping against the Raptors.

After dropping 61 against the New York Knicks on Wednesday night, he took more of a back seat role against the Raptors.

And speaking after the game, Harden explained that he is willing to let his team-mates take more shots if needed.

“I’m just trying to do whatever it takes to win,” he said.

“Honestly, if I have to score a lot of points tonight [I would have].

“My teammates were making shots, Kenneth brought amazing energy.

“It was a great team effort.

“Whatever the team needs me to do, I’m willing to do.”

The game went right down to the wire, with the Rockets up by two while the Raptors had the ball with 15 seconds left.

Kawhi Leonard took the ball down court, and Harden guarded him effectively.

The Raptors star airballed, giving the win to Houston.

And Harden admitted that he knew exactly what Leonard was going to do.

“I knew he was going to pull up for the three,” he said.

“I was just trying to contest it as good as possible.

“He hit two big three’s previously, it was kind of sloppy, but we won. That’s all that matters.”

Harvard Is Scoring Big in the NFL. Here's Why https://briefnews.eu/harvard-is-scoring-big-in-the-nfl-heres-why/ https://briefnews.eu/harvard-is-scoring-big-in-the-nfl-heres-why/#respond Sat, 01 Dec 2018 05:33:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/harvard-is-scoring-big-in-the-nfl-heres-why/

During a Week 3 NFL game in sunny Tampa Bay this season, Buccaneers quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick connected with tight end Cameron Brate for a four-yard touchdown. That same week, in Kansas City, San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk took a pass 35 yards for a touchdown.

Back in Boston, these plays no doubt made Tim Murphy smile. After all, the Harvard University head football coach had groomed all three players to succeed at the NFL level, and they aren’t letting him down.

Harvard has long enjoyed a global reputation as the apex of academic excellence, as an institution students dream of attending, from India and Indonesia, Paraguay and Pakistan alike. Now, the school is showing another side of its success story. Harvard is enjoying an unprecedented level of NFL success. In 2014, there were three Harvard players on the NFL’s opening day rosters. To open this season, that number has ballooned to eight, with a ninth player signed to a team’s practice squad.

No matter what the FCS school, NFL teams always want to find the best players, wherever they are.

Matt Mano, former NFL scout

These eight Harvard players in the NFL comprise more than half of the Ivy League’s total representation of 15 players, with the University of Pennsylvania claiming three and Columbia, Cornell, Princeton and Yale with one apiece. In fact, Harvard sends the most players to the NFL of any Division I FCS program, which includes the Ivy League conference as well as 13 others and is less competitive than Division I FBS. That’s significant when you consider the talent other top FCS programs like North Dakota State have produced recently, such as Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz and Indianapolis Colts right tackle Joe Haeg.

“No matter what the FCS school, NFL teams always want to find the best players, wherever they are,” says Matt Mano, former NFL scout with the New Orleans Saints and Cleveland Browns. “Harvard has gotten some great scholar-athletes recently who have made their mark, and they are as well-positioned as any FCS school to attract NFL talent.”

Once upon a time, if Harvard was producing NFL players, they were likely to be offensive linemen or quarterbacks — you know, the “brainy” positions. But recent Harvard products who have made their way to the NFL are demonstrating they got more than a good education at their alma mater. Harvard has landed a collection of talented H-backs (fullback/tight end hybrids) in the pros in Kyle Juszczyk, Cameron Brate, Ben Braunecker and Anthony Firkser. The 49ers made Juszczyk the highest-paid fullback in NFL history in 2017 with a four-year, $ 21-million deal. And don’t forget Tyler Ott, currently signed to the Seattle Seahawks, who boasts skills at both tight end and … long snapper.

Firkser, now with the Titans, credits Murphy’s unique offense as the reason he chose to commit to Harvard. “During recruiting, [Murphy] showed me a lot of film on the H-back position I didn’t really know existed,” Firkser says. “As a bigger receiver, Harvard best suited my play style.”

Coach Murphy’s special breed of pass-catcher has caught the eye of NFL teams looking to get tight ends and fullbacks involved in new ways as passing continues to dominate the professional game. “The NFL has trended more toward what’s going on in college football, and that’s why you have more athletic quarterbacks, more spread sets,” says Murphy. “It’s become a much more dynamic game.”

NFL teams have found myriad uses for these Harvard pass-catchers — whom Murphy, also Harvard’s tight ends coach, describes as the “SEALs” of his system because they must be able to line up anywhere on the field.

Before Murphy took over at the helm of this program 25 years ago, NFL scouts weren’t lining up to watch its players, save for an offensive lineman here or there — guard/center Joe Pellegrini in 1982 or tackle Roger Caron in 1985. But the type of athletes Murphy and his staff have focused on recruiting has put the program on the map, opening up a well that scouts find themselves returning to year after year. In total, since the league was founded in 1920, Harvard has sent 36 players to the NFL — 13 since Murphy took his current post in 1994. It’s no coincidence that Harvard has the fifth-highest winning percentage in all of Division I this century, sitting just behind FBS heavyweight Oklahoma.

“We’ve definitely developed some credibility in that when we recommend a kid, it’s certainly worth a look,” says Murphy. “All those tight ends were not heavily recruited kids out of high school,” he adds. But they thrive in the Crimson system “because they have to adapt.” That’s an ability more NFL teams are looking for as offensive playbooks get more complicated.

However, while we can quantitatively point to a growing number of Harvard athletes on NFL rosters, Mano can’t say for sure the trend will continue to rise. “All of this has probably led to a bit of a trend, but at the same time the sample size is small,” he points out.

If Harvard is going to not only dominate the FCS in getting players on NFL rosters but actually start competing with FBS programs — where Alabama leads the pack with 43 players on NFL rosters — it starts and ends with recruiting. “We are the ultimate human resources industry,” says Murphy. “The better kids and better athletes we recruit, the more successful our program has been. We certainly believe we will have more of these kinds of athletes in the future.”

NFL scouts certainly seem to hope so.

Entangling alliances or scoring at home? Why US went out of its way with Russian diplomat expulsions https://briefnews.eu/entangling-alliances-or-scoring-at-home-why-us-went-out-of-its-way-with-russian-diplomat-expulsions/ https://briefnews.eu/entangling-alliances-or-scoring-at-home-why-us-went-out-of-its-way-with-russian-diplomat-expulsions/#respond Tue, 27 Mar 2018 01:21:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/entangling-alliances-or-scoring-at-home-why-us-went-out-of-its-way-with-russian-diplomat-expulsions/ The decision to expel 60 Russian diplomats suggests that President Donald Trump is either following the siren call of ‘entangling alliances,’ or taking the lead in escalating the conflict with Moscow to appease domestic critics.

Not only did Trump’s order affect more than twice as many diplomats as the March 14 move by London, it accounts for more than half of the total Russian diplomats expelled by various US allies on Monday. Monday’s action is the biggest expulsion of alleged “intelligence officers” since the Cold War and the largest in US history, according to US ambassador to Russia, Jon Huntsman.

Though Trump campaigned on the “America First” foreign policy, openly critical of the nation-building and “humanitarian” interventions his predecessors engaged in, little of that remains after the first year of his presidency. The media and the opposition Democrats appear to have buttonholed the president with never-ending accusations that he is somehow “soft” on Russia.

Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump at the APEC Summit in Danang, Vietnam November 11, 2017.

In reality, the current administration has taken the hostility toward Moscow, inherited from Barack Obama’s second term, and turned it up a notch, from pressuring Russian media to register as foreign agents and approving the sale of anti-tank missiles to Ukraine, to expelling more Russian diplomats and shutting down consulates.

In addition to expelling the diplomats, Trump ordered the closure of the Russian consulate in Seattle, Washington. The decision cited the consulate’s proximity to a US submarine base and to Boeing production facilities, implying the diplomats were really intelligence operatives.

That was echoed by White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah, who told reporters the expulsion is aimed at “significantly degrading their intelligence capabilities around the world, not just in the US.”

Shah said the move was “coordinated with NATO allies,” and represented a US response to Russia’s “brazen and reckless” actions, namely, the alleged nerve agent attack that reportedly injured former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury, UK, three weeks ago.

British authorities have asserted that Russia was “highly likely” to have been behind the incident, but have refused to provide any evidence to back up Prime Minister Theresa May and Foreign Minister Boris Johnson’s words. Johnson even went so far as to compare Russian President Vladimir Putin to Adolf Hitler – twice! – though it was Russia that carried the disproportionate burden in defeating Hitler’s “Thousand-year Reich” in the Second World War.

On March 14, May ordered the expulsion of 23 Russian diplomats. Russia retaliated by expelling the same number of British diplomats, as well as shutting down the consulate in St. Petersburg and British Council operations in Russia.

Seasoned observers of international relations might note that it is usually Britain that follows the US lead – whether in the 1999 attack on Yugoslavia, the 2003 invasion of Iraq, or the 2011 regime change operation in Libya – and not the other way around. Yet, according to White House’s Shah, the US is “joined at the hip” with the UK on this. What gives?

America’s first president, George Washington, warned way back in 1796 of the danger of “entangling alliances,” which would draw the newly created country into foreign wars on behalf of allied governments. Such alliances would also lead to poor relations with other nations and distort US policies to favor the wishes of its allies over the will of the American people.

Yet today’s US policymakers, from the highest officials of the Trump administration to the NeverTrump think-tanks, treat it as an article of faith that the US is strong because it has entangling alliances with countries all over the world, and a military presence all over the planet.

Washington and other allies of London “blindly follow the principle of Euro-Atlantic unity at the expense of common sense, the rules of civilized state-to-state dialogue and the principles of international law,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said, condemning the expulsions.

Shah’s comments, that the US relationship with Russia is entirely “up to the Russian government and up to Putin,” as if Washington had no agency in the matter, certainly seems to suggest that Trump is all tangled up in the “special relationship” with London.

However, there is also the possibility that Trump or some of his advisers are pursuing hostility towards Moscow in order to counter the narrative of ‘Russian collusion’ – which originated from the Hillary Clinton campaign after the humiliating loss in the 2016 election, and continues to be pushed by many in the US media and the Democratic party.

“What we are witnessing now is part of a long-term program of unbridled Russophobia,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Rossiya-1 TV.

Reporters covering the White House presented a good example on Monday. In the rare moments when they digressed from discussing Trump’s alleged affair with porn star Stormy Daniels, reporters mostly wanted to know “what took so long” to expel the diplomats and why more is not being done against Russia. CNN’s Jim Sciutto finally got a question, only to demand more sanctions against “Russian oligarchs” and Putin personally.

No matter what Trump does against Russia, it fails to mollify his critics, who see evidence of his “collusion” with Moscow in absolutely everything.

Whatever the intent behind Monday’s decision, its timing and execution were certainly problematic. The expulsion of diplomats came as Russia was collectively mourning the deaths of 64 people, many of them children, in a mall fire in the Siberian city of Kemerovo. Adding insult to injury sounds like really poor diplomacy, no matter who’s behind it.

Then again, as the former UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali noted in his 1999 memoir, Washington sees no need for diplomacy when power will do.

“The Roman Empire had no need for diplomacy. Nor does the United States,” wrote Boutros-Ghali.

‘Destiny 2’ Nightfall raids get an improved scoring system https://briefnews.eu/destiny-2-nightfall-raids-get-an-improved-scoring-system/ https://briefnews.eu/destiny-2-nightfall-raids-get-an-improved-scoring-system/#respond Sat, 10 Feb 2018 04:48:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/destiny-2-nightfall-raids-get-an-improved-scoring-system/

Just a few days ago, Bungie released its Destiny 2 development road map, full of improvements to counter complaints about diminishing rewards. Now the company has announced a new scoring system for the game’s weekly Nightfall raids aimed at rewarding players for more fine-grained achievements instead of a simple time-based pass/fail mechanism.

Destiny 2‘s Senior Design Lead Tyson Green admits that the time limit for Nightfalls was driving players away. “It only acknowledges success as being a clear, with no degrees of success past that, so no competition exists in that space,” he said in a blog post. “It turns a lot of people off of Nightfall too, since it is both difficult and indexes performance solely on speed.”

Scoring is now team-based and the sum of individual performances, which should encourage teams to work together more. Scores will again be driven by kills and orb of light generation, a back-to-basics approach that won’t be cluttered up by special point awards like medals (though the team may add these back in the future). Finally, your score will slowly decrease over time (“score decay”) so that teams able to finish it faster will get a higher score than those who take their time. In addition, scoring points is cut in half after 15 minutes in a Nightfall, while no points can be scored after 18 minutes. These two changes are meant to make your score more meaningful than just the current pass/fail mechanic. In addition, once you complete a Nightfall run, you’ll get a Challenge Card that will help you tune the level to better match your fireteam’s ability. Plus, you’ll get new Nightfall Emblems so everyone can see their high score on specific Nightfalls. These emblems also give you a cool-looking aura if your personal score is higher than a certain global threshold.

So now, instead of racing through a Nightfall, you’ll want to be a bit more methodical. “With Nightfall strike scoring,” said designer John Favaro, “we were looking to give players a little more control, allowing them to modify their experiences to provide them the challenge they want and incentivize more methodical progression through the activities. People like big numbers, and the best way to get big numbers is to kill everything.”

But in the past few years, unicorns have become far more plentiful, more like horses.

A year ago, the venture capital industry looked like it was going to tighten its belt and bring valuations back to earth. But in 2017, venture investment continued to flow heavily and is on track to match or exceed dollars deployed in 2016, says PitchBook, a database that tracks such deals.

Mega deals, where investors poured giant sums into one company at a high valuation, made up less than 1% of total transactions, but, by the third quarter, PitchBook says they accounted for 22% of the total deal value.

All of that means that new unicorns were plentiful in 2017. Dozens of startups were crowned with unicorn status worldwide, including these 23 US companies, according to CB Insight’s list of unicorns. (We took the valuations of these companies from Pitchbook.)

The one proven trick to scoring a cheap flight — and 5 ways you can use it to your advantage https://briefnews.eu/the-one-proven-trick-to-scoring-a-cheap-flight-and-5-ways-you-can-use-it-to-your-advantage/ https://briefnews.eu/the-one-proven-trick-to-scoring-a-cheap-flight-and-5-ways-you-can-use-it-to-your-advantage/#respond Thu, 21 Dec 2017 09:37:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-one-proven-trick-to-scoring-a-cheap-flight-and-5-ways-you-can-use-it-to-your-advantage/ woman airportShutterstock / tsarevv

  • Finding the cheapest airfare relies on several factors — including time of year and day of the week.
  • Sometimes, rewards points aren’t the most important thing.
  • Having a layover can be a major difference in prices.

Although there are lots of tips and tricks for saving on airfare, there is no money-saver quite like flexibility.

Travelers who are locked into rigid plans will almost always have to shell out more money than their freewheeling counterparts.

As you consider your next destination, here are five ways that being flexibility can help you travel on a budget.

Time of year

airportScott Olson/Getty

Don’t take vacation when everybody else is taking vacation. The day before Thanksgiving, the days before Christmas, and spring break around Easter are often the most expensive times of year to book a flight.

Flexible travelers should try to book flights in early November or early December, and January or February to save on airfare. Those looking to save on a getaway in the summer should aim to travel in early June or the middle of August.

Day of the week

google flights calendarGoogle Flights

Fridays and Sundays are among the most expensive days to fly, according to FareCompare. Those who can arrange plans to fly in the middle of the week will likely find lower airfares.

When searching for flights, you can also see which days are cheaper using tools like the fare calendar in Google Flights.

Time of day

airport security TSA lineAP

Passengers who don’t mind sacrificing a few hours of sleep can often find the lowest prices of the day on red-eye flights. (Bonus: Airports are generally less crowded in the mornings, so security lines are faster.)

Routes

airportMaja Hitij/Getty Images

Making a detour instead of taking a direct route is often the cheapest option for passengers traveling through smaller airports. Because airlines operate on a spoke-and-hub model, flying to an out-of-the-way hub (and sacrificing a few hours) can result in less expensive airfare.

Loyalty

plane ticket boarding passdebaird™ / Creative Commons

Price is a deciding factor for most airline passengers — except those with brand loyalty. Even though you may be trying to rack up frequent flier miles with a particular airline, shopping around may reveal that fares are low enough on another airline that the rewards for a single flight aren’t worth the price difference.

DIGITAL DISRUPTION OF CREDIT SCORING: How developments in the credit scoring space are opening up new opportunities for incumbent lenders https://briefnews.eu/digital-disruption-of-credit-scoring-how-developments-in-the-credit-scoring-space-are-opening-up-new-opportunities-for-incumbent-lenders/ https://briefnews.eu/digital-disruption-of-credit-scoring-how-developments-in-the-credit-scoring-space-are-opening-up-new-opportunities-for-incumbent-lenders/#respond Sun, 19 Nov 2017 02:44:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/digital-disruption-of-credit-scoring-how-developments-in-the-credit-scoring-space-are-opening-up-new-opportunities-for-incumbent-lenders/ Underserved US CustomersBII

This is a preview of a research report from BI Intelligence, Business Insider’s premium research service. To learn more about BI Intelligence, click here.

Traditional consumer lenders, like banks and credit unions, have historically served segments of the population they can conduct robust risk assessments on.

But the data they collect from these groups is limited and typically impossible to analyze in real time, preventing them from confirming the accuracy of their assessments. This restricts the demographic segments they can safely serve, and creates an inconvenient experience for potential borrowers.

This has hobbled legacy lenders at a time when alternative lending firms — which pride themselves on precision risk assessment and financial inclusion — are taking off. These rivals are starting to break into a huge untapped borrower market — some 64 million US consumers don’t have a conventional FICO score, and 10 million of those are prime or near-prime consumers.

Incumbents can get in on the game by tapping into new developments in the credit scoring space, like psychometric scoring, which use data besides borrowing history to measure creditworthiness, and by integrating new technologies, like artificial intelligence (AI), to improve the accuracy of conventional risk assessment methods. There are still risks attached to these cutting-edge methods and technologies, but if incumbent lenders are aware of them, and take steps to mitigate them, the payoff from implementing these new tools can be huge.

In a new report, BI Intelligence looks at the drivers encouraging incumbent lenders to consider adopting new credit scoring methods or innovative technologies that make the lending process more seamless. It also outlines what incumbents stand to gain from adopting alt scoring, the types of models on the market to choose from, the risks still appended to onboarding them, and recommendations on how to mitigate them to add real value to legacy lenders’ businesses.

Here are some of the key takeaways from the report:

  • Alternative lenders are disrupting the credit scoring space in two key ways: by using alternate credit scoring methods and integrating new technologies.
  • There’s a range of methods and technologies incumbent lenders can choose to implement. But the solutions that are best suited for a particular lender will vary based on its specific business needs, the demographics it aims to attract, and its jurisdiction’s regulatory landscape.
  • If executed correctly, the payoff can be huge for incumbent lenders. In addition to boosting financial inclusion and enabling lenders to tap into new demographic segments and markets, new methods and technologies can improve returns on existing demographics.
  • However, disruptions carry both short- and long-term risks that both fintechs and incumbent lenders must navigate. These include inbuilt biases, fraud, conflict with third-party data policies, and poor financial literacy among underserved demographics.

In full, the report:

  • Outlines the drivers behind incumbent lenders’ growing awareness and adoption of credit scoring disruptions.
  • Looks at the current range of methods and technologies changing the face of credit scoring.
  • Explains what incumbent lenders stand to gain by adopting these disruptions.
  • Discusses the risks still attached to these disruptions, and how incumbents can manage them to reap the rewards.
  • Gives an overview of what the credit scoring landscape of the future will look like, and how incumbents can prepare themselves to stay relevant.

Strictly Come Dancing 2017: Host Tess Daly takes swipe at Craig Revel Horwood's scoring https://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2017-host-tess-daly-takes-swipe-at-craig-revel-horwoods-scoring/ https://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2017-host-tess-daly-takes-swipe-at-craig-revel-horwoods-scoring/#respond Sat, 18 Nov 2017 12:13:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2017-host-tess-daly-takes-swipe-at-craig-revel-horwoods-scoring/

The blonde beauty gave the judge a taste of his own medicine on the extravaganza as she critiqued his role as Miss Hannigan.

The judge looked unrecognisable as he transformed into the villain from West End musical Annie to give a special performance.

At the end of his routine, Tess decided to get her own back on her co-star as she scored him out of 10 using a Pudsey Bear paddle.

The 48-year-old generously awarded Craig with a 10 before commenting: “What a performance, thank you so much.

“I was expecting something fabulous and you did not disappoint.”

However, she then jokingly took a swipe at his notoriously mean marking on as she quipped: “Yeah, it’s a ten from me – feels good holding up a ten. I think Craig should try it more often. Do you?”

It came after following a segment including Aston Merrygold.

Fans of the BBC series were stunned when the former JLS star was eliminated from the competition two weeks ago and the presenter couldn’t help but make a joke about his departure.

Following the singer’s appearance on Children in Need, Mel laughed: “It was nice to see Aston Merrygold again… Thanks Shirley.”

Unsurprisingly, those tuning into the show picked up on the cheeky swipe and rushed to Twitter to comment on Mel’s remark.

“Haha Mel got a dig in at Shirley,” one viewer shared, while another added: “Haha did Mel really throw a dig at Shirley over Aston? Haha.”
