Uber is working on its own scooter to compete with Lime, Bird, Scoot and others, according to Bloomberg. The project is being overseen by Jump, a bike-sharing firm that Uber acquired in April for a reported $ 200 million. Little is known about the hardware, however, and how it might differentiate from existing push and electric scooters. The only tidbit, for now, is the location of Uber and Jump’s engineers: San Francisco. Both companies are yet to confirm the story. In an interview with Bloomberg, though, Nick Foley, Jump’s head of product, discussed the need for stronger scooters and hidden brake cables. Make of that what you will.

While the scooter is developed, Uber needs to work on courting city officials. Yesterday, San Francisco’s Municipal Transportation Agency awarded scooter permits to two companies, Skip and Scoot. Bird, Lime and Spin, the first companies to drop a fleet of scooters in the city, were denied alongside Uber and Lyft. San Monica, however, has given Bird, Lime, Lyft and Jump a 16-month permit for a pilot program starting on September 17th. Through Jump, then, Uber has at least one market to test its own hardware in. The expansion could affect Uber’s partnership with Lime, which allows users to rent green scooters through its ride-hailing app.

Electric scooter rentals have been hugely controversial. They’re cheap to rent, reduce traditional traffic and help people complete “last mile” journeys. The dockless system, though, means they’re regularly discarded on the sidewalk, blocking doorways and causing unnecessary congestion for pedestrians. Like dockless bikes, they’re also easily damaged and a prime target for thieves who want a free ride or to sell them for quick cash. These issues are the reason why San Francisco and Santa Monica have introduced purpose-built regulation. Scooters may have a place in our cities, but they need to be implemented in a fair and thoughtful way.

Shown in concept form at last year’s EICMA, the Vespa Elettrica scooter has reached production form. Piaggio, the company producing Vespa scooters, has announced the Elettrica will ship next year, and that it’s good for a range of 100 kilometers or 62 miles. Crucially, though, there was not mention of a selling price.

A regular-issue, gasoline-powered Vespa from the cheaper end of the portfolio has a range of 174 miles, but thanks to the wonders of an electric motor, the silent Elettrica should be far perkier than the non-electric version. Piaggio says the Elettrica delivers “continuous” power of 2 kilowatts, with peak power at 4 kilowatts. The Elettrica will charge fully in four hours, and the projected lifetime of its lithium-ion batteries is 10 years or roughly 40,000 miles. After 1,000 charge cycles the batteries’ capacity will be down to 80 percent. A hybrid version called the Elettrica X will have double the range to more than 120 miles.

In addition to the electric hardware, there’s software on offer. A 4.3-inch Vespa Multimedia Platform display shows information pertinent to the charge and range, and will also connect to the rider’s smartphone and eventually a Bluetooth-pairable helmet that can be used for voice commands.

Scores of teenagers disrupted traffic in parts of Brisbane on Sunday after they decided to race through Fortitude Valley on push scooters. The bizarre incident resulted in a number of arrests.

Footage of the scooter cavalcade, described as a ‘street jam’ on social media, shows a large group of teenagers taking over roads and pathways along Wickham and Queen Street on their way to Kangaroo Point.

Queensland Police said those involved were weaving “dangerously” in and out of traffic.

“Police became aware of a large group of young people riding dangerously on scooters throughout the valley and the city this afternoon,” a police statement read.

“At times, those involved were riding the wrong way down the road and were weaving in and out of traffic. It appears as though the ride was organised via social media. Preliminary information suggests that police were not advised of this so-called event prior to it happening.”

Footage released by Nine News Queensland appears to show cops clashing with members of the scooter gang.

Video blogger Jack Dauth posted on Instagram about his arrest during the incident, which threatened to boil over into scuffles between police and the youths.

Mobility scooters are ubiquitous. At hot-rod shows, they fly in squadron formation with each pilot trailing a gray ponytail.
