Mercedes-Benz is joining the ranks of car manufacturers working on hyper-luxurious EVs. In a chat with Autocar, the company’s large car division leader Michael Kelz promised an electric car “at the level” of the high-end S-Class sedan. The exec unsurprisingly isn’t providing many details, but confirmed its EQ S name (the company had trademarked the badging earlier) and noted that it wouldn’t share the S-Class’ underpinnings — the conventional car just can’t accommodate a pure electric design. We’d expect the EQ design language to find its way into this model as well.

The company had previously promised electric versions of all its cars by 2022, but the EQ S could be ready as soon as 2020.

This isn’t exactly democratizing EVs (that’s up to the sibling Smart brand). However, the EQ S could still be important. Technology from Mercedes’ highest-end vehicles sometimes filters down to other models, for starters. Also, having an S-Class parallel could give EVs a degree of prestige they haven’t had before — this would be one of the first EVs for customers with their own chauffeurs.

Mercedes-Benz is making its top-of-the-line S-Class coupe and convertibles even more luxe by planning to unveil Exclusive Editions at the Geneva Motor Show. They’ll go on sale at the beginning of April and be available with almost any S-Class V8 or V12 engine.

The Exclusive Edition comes with a choice of aragonite silver or rubellite red paint finishes, with the soft top on the cabriolet available in dark red or beige, depending on the paint finish. Standard features include LED Intelligent Light System with Swarovski crystals and “Exclusive Edition” lettering on the center console cup holder cover. There’s also 19-inch light-alloy wheels painted in either aragonite silver or himalaya grey with thulium silver, while the AMG line comes with the option of 20-inch multi-spoke light-alloy wheels painted in black with a high-sheen finish.

Interior trim is done in light brown high-gloss sen, an Asian hardwood, and nappa leather in the seats, front and rear center armrests, instrument panel, door center panels and map pockets on driver and front passenger backrests, and contrasting topstitching galore. It also gets a Burmester surround-sound system, diamond-shaped perforated seat upholstery, microfiber roof liner and sun visors, door sills with illuminated MB lettering and special floor mats with edges trimmed in either titian red or porcelain.

Mercedes-Benz announced a mid-cycle refresh last fall that included new OLED taillights on its two-door models, plus common-to-the-sedan features like new semiautonomous driver-assist features, 12-inch Widescreen Cockpit dash and infotainment system and the Energizing Comfort system for lights, massage, ventilation and atomizing cabin odorizer. Pricing on the Exclusive Edition wasn’t announced, but expect it to climb north of the 2017 Cabriolet’s $ 131,400 starting MSRP.

The resurrection of Maybach under the Mercedes-Maybach sub-brand was a late—and mildly controversial—decision. The long-wheelbase version of the Mercedes-Benz S-class could have been launched as just that. Instead, a group of executives, including chief designer Gorden Wagener, lobbied hard to bring back the Maybach moniker, resulting in the Mercedes-Maybach S-class. That was despite the somewhat disastrous run of the Maybach 57 and 62, behemoths built upon the platform of the W140 S-class between 2002 and 2012. As a stand-alone brand, Maybach never came close to meeting its production targets.

Launching Mercedes-Maybach in November 2014 as a more luxury-oriented sub-brand parallel to the performance-minded Mercedes-AMG variants, however, has been a smashing success. Priced within reach of the standard car, the longer Maybach models (stretched nearly 10 inches beyond the length of the Benz-branded S-class sedans sold here, which are themselves the “long-wheelbase” models in Europe) have proved especially popular in the United States, Russia, and China. Parent company Daimler already has decided that the brand will be expanded to further segments: think next-gen GLS.

2019 Mercedes-Maybach S-class Sedan

Now that Mercedes-Maybach is established, Daimler has decided that it needs its own face. So here, revealed ahead of its public unveiling at the upcoming Geneva auto show, is the 2019 Mercedes-Maybach S-class, complete with a fresh and brand-specific grille of vertical slats similar to that used on the 2002–2012 models—only this time topped by a Mercedes three-pointed-star hood ornament. The photos that Mercedes released show a car painted in a newly available two-tone scheme, which also is reminiscent of the earlier Maybachs and intended to emphasize the brand’s position as a competitor to the likes of Bentley. The catalog will include a total of nine two-tone paint schemes, and customers can order the darker colors enhanced with a double clear coat manually applied “by specially trained varnishers,” the company says. The interior benefits from additional available color schemes and new trim options as well. That’s all before you get into the sort of custom offerings often available on cars priced far north of $ 150,000.

The differentiation from the regular S-class and the entire Mercedes-Benz range is a logical step following Maybach’s initial success. Right now, it still is possible to order a Mercedes-Maybach with a relatively frugal equipment list, keeping the price gap from a regular S-class fairly modest. The new face and more upscale options will only enhance its appeal and expand the price range upward.

The more visually distinctive 2019 models—both the V-8–powered Mercedes-Maybach S560 and its V-12–powered S650 sibling—go on sale in Europe in April; the U.S. market will follow in late summer, by which time we’ll know more about pricing.

When the Lexus LS first hit the scene in 1989, it undercut the competing German sedans by thousands of dollars. Nearly 30 years later, that’s still the case, as the new 2018 LS starts at $ 75,995, or $ 14,900 less than the least expensive Mercedes-Benz S-class and $ 8100 less than the cheapest BMW 7-series. Lexus’s latest flagship sedan comes in LS500 and LS500h forms, the former of which is powered by a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 while the latter uses a hybrid drivetrain incorporating a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6.

Not only is the Lexus less expensive than its European competition, it also comes better equipped, with even the base rear-wheel-drive LS500 coming standard with a full suite of active safety features that cost thousands extra on the S-class and 7-series. Lexus’s only real competition in the “budget-priced” flagship-sedan realm is the Genesis G90, which starts at an even lower $ 69,325 and includes plenty of standard equipment of its own.

2018 Lexus LS

All-wheel drive is a $ 3220 option on both the LS500 and the $ 80,505 LS500h hybrid, and several packages are available that can drive the sedans’ price above the six-figure mark. The LS500 F Sport that adds a performance-oriented wheel-and-tire package, larger brakes, sharper chassis tuning, and plenty of visual aggression inside and out, costs $ 81,995. A $ 9700 F Sport performance package turns up the sportiness a notch higher with active anti-roll bars, rear-wheel steering, and a variable-ratio steering rack.

For those interested more in the luxury side of the spectrum, numerous interior upgrades are offered for non–F Sport models. The lowest level is the $ 3730 Interior Upgrade package with nicer leather, 28-way front seats with massage, and heated rear seats; one step up is the Luxury package ($ 12,250–$ 12,290) with the above features plus four-zone automatic climate control and power reclining rear seats with heating, ventilation, and massage functions. The top-dog Executive package offers even more adjustability for the front and rear seats for between $ 17,080 and $ 17,100, while an extra $ 6000 on top of that adds exclusive Kiriko glass interior trim.
