For more than two years, research teams across the country — and around the world — have been using human waste to monitor rising and falling SARS-CoV-2 levels. The same sewage surveillance systems can track pathogens from polio to monkeypox. So what’s the future of wastewater testing?

Countryfile returned to BBC One this evening and those watching at home tuned in to see Tom Heap on a quest to find out what the UK’s beef industry had to do in order to survive following a decrease in profit last year. From discussing vegan and vegetarian alternatives, to the prices beef farmers were being paid for their produce, the presenter also looked into reports and health headlines. But some viewers questioned whether all sides to the argument were looked into and discussed during the segment and took to Twitter with their thoughts, suggesting more experts needed to be involved in the debate.
One viewer said: “#Countryfile talking about huge losses in the beef industry, talking about how TV advertisements are fuelling it. yet same show now interviewing militant vegan, and @BBC1 is showing another anti-meat how tomorrow. why isn’t it trying a little bit to be balanced? In GB lower co2.”
Someone else commented: “#Countryfile yet again just one view??”
“Surprised how biased Countyfile is tonight! They are pretending to be impartial. Nothing wrong with eating less meat. Healthier, cheaper & environment friendly. Fact #Countryfile,” a third suggested.
While one tweet read: “Bloody @BBC banging on about the #ClimateHoax Again. It’s all BullShit. #Countryfile.”
“#Countryfile annoyed Tom is not asking some real scientists.. but then he has already made his mind up seemingly!!” One viewer claimed.

“We were once known as a nation of roast beef lovers..but that may be changing,” Ellie Harrison commented. “And at what cost to UK farmers – Tom’s been finding out.”
“How and what we farm feeds into all aspects of life, from the health and wealth of our nation to our global environment and what we, as consumers choose to eat can have an immediate impact on farmers’ livelihoods,” Tom introduced in a voiceover.
The presenter explained how it has “been a pretty tough year for our beef farmers” in the UK and then went onto discuss the “health fears to environmental concerns” sweeping the nation and said red meat was currently suffering a “major PR problem”.
Countryfile then played clips from a variety of BBC News segments discussing scientists warning of food production needing to become more sustainable in order to combat climate change, as well as revealing some health headlines which suggest red meat can increase the risk of certain cancers.
Those watching at home also learnt how the sale of beef burgers had fallen by nearly five percent, and steaks by 6.5 percent, but while total beef sales are only slightly down, Tom said “the real problem or farmers is what they’re being paid at the farm gate”.
Joining Tom was to discuss how her farm has been impacted was fifth generation cattle farmer Jilly Greed and she wasted no time in explaining the struggle she has endured in the last year.
“I must say your stock is looking fantastic, but your business isn’t in such good fettle. Tell me about that,” Tom asked.
“No, we’re seeing a shortfall of about 16 percent and if we take Esther here and her calf, there’s a £185 loss in margin,” she revealed.
“And if you multiply that £185 across your business, what difference is that in income say, this year to last?” The presenter enquired.
“We’ve seen a shortfall of about £18,000 in our turnover, like-for-like, just with the fall in beef price. And it’s unsustainable, we’re working our socks off to make it sustainable,” she stated.

According to NFU, 2019 via Countryfile, it has been estimated in the last 12 months, UK beef farmers have lost £170 million.
Tom then went to speak to John Davies, the president of NFU Cymru to discuss the dire situation cattle farmers are finding themselves in.
A clip from a supermarket’s television advert was played encouraging shoppers to switch their meat choice to vegan and this led into Tom to explore what alternative meat free options consumers were being tempted to try and buy.
After briefly discussing two health reports, one from Cancer Research UK and then anther from the UN, Tom moved onto speak to vegan and academic researcher Joseph Poore from Oxford University about meats impact on global warming and climate change.
After writing a paper warning about the environmental impact the meat industry was having globally, Joseph told Tom: “The most important things are the methane that cows produce in their digestive systems that comes up.
“Second thing is manure. Cow’s manure creates both methane and nitrous oxide, both of which are very powerful green house omissions.
“Thirdly, if you look globally, beef and cows are one of the biggest drivers of forest loss and deforestation. And when you clear a forest, that releases carbon that was stored in those trees.”
“Just to interrupt -t that both for their grazing themselves and also for fee that is given to them alter?” Tom clarified and Joseph said: “Exactly.”
But what Tom did make sure was clear, was how the UK farmed beef “very differently” to other big beef-producing nations like Brazil where the “system is less environmentally sustainable”.

How do the larvae of black soldier flies eat so much, so fast, despite their tiny size? Scientists at Georgia Tech have been studying this “collective feeding” behavior and found that one strategy for maximizing the larvae’s feeding rate involves forming maggot “fountains.” The scientists described the results in a recent paper in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, along with an entertaining video showing a swarm of larvae consuming an entire pizza in just two hours.
“This is the first time, as far as I know, that we’ve really tried to quantify how much they were able to eat, and how they are able to do it,” said graduate student and co-author Olga Shishkov, who demonstrated the research on Saturday at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Washington, DC. It’s not the first time she’s had fun demonstrating the maggots’ hearty appetite in creative ways: last year, she videotaped the critters devouring a heart-shaped donut for Valentine’s Day.
Shishkov’s advisor is David Hu, who runs a biolocomotion laboratory at the Georgia Institute of Technology studying how various creatures move. He is perhaps best known for his work with fire ants, but his lab also studies cat tongues, water striders, snakes, various climbing insects, mosquitos, and, of course, black soldier fly larvae.

The 116th Congress was sworn in on Thursday, with 10 new scientists in the ranks.
Many of the incoming science experts on the Hill hold medical degrees, have worked in healthcare, or have an intimate understanding of topics like nuclear energy or climate change. It’s a major boost in the science credentials of the US governing body, which still has only one PhD scientist and one PhD mathematician among the 535 members.
While there are no additional PhDs on this list of new-comers, the doctors, engineers, and energy wonks who joined Congress bring knowledge of science, technology, and healthcare.
“Scientists are essentially problem-solvers,” Shaughnessy Naughton, president of 314 Action, a nonprofit political action committee dedicated to recruiting, training, and funding scientists and healthcare workers who want to run for political office, previously told Business Insider.
She said the new science-minded politicians will change the political conversation in Washington and “bring a much more nuanced and productive conversation to the healthcare debate,” while at the same time taking on environmental issues, cybersecurity, and election integrity.
“Who better to be tackling these issues than scientists?” she said.

The 36-year-old told The Post and Courier that he’s “pumped” to get to work in DC and end the government shutdown.
“People in the 1st Congressional District have sent me up here to extinguish those flames of partisan hatred and political divide as opposed to pouring kerosene on it,” he said.

If you ever find yourself trapped in a real-life Game of Thrones-style nightmare, don’t be afraid to cast your morals aside in pursuit of survival. New research shows loyalty led characters in the popular show to an early death.
The research, published in the Injury Epidemiology journal, showed that Game of Thrones characters were more likely to survive if they switched their allegiances when necessary.
The researchers at the Macquarie University in Australia analyzed 330 deaths across seven seasons of the TV show based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books, in an effort to decipher which characters were more likely to survive into the final season, reaching the conclusion that loyalty reaps few rewards.
Take Tyrion Lannister, for example. He managed to avoid a premature death by dropping his allegiance to the house Lannister in favor of the house Targaryen.
Early death was also more likely to befall a character if they were ‘lowborn’ compared to those who were ‘highborn’ (a Lord or a Lady, for example).
Death is a common occurrence in the hit TV show. In fact, by the end of the seventh season “more than half of the characters had died,” with most of the deaths being violent, according to Dr Reidar Lystad, an author of the study. The probability of a character dying within the first hour of appearing on screen was 14 percent, with the survival time of individual characters ranging from 11 seconds to 57 hours and 15 minutes.
Most of the deaths (over 80 percent) also took place in Westeros, with the most common location being the unlucky character’s own home. As for the causes of death, 73.7 percent were injuries, particularly to the head and neck — including 13 decapitations. Other top causes were burns (11.8 percent) and poisonings (4.8 percent). Dying of natural causes was rare, with only two characters, Maester Aemon and Old Nan, dying of old age.
Having qualities that are associated with higher chances of survival might not be enough to save show favorite Tyrion Lannister, however. Lystad predicted to Newsweek that the popular character probably won’t make it “all the way to the end.”
As for comparing the fictional world of Game of Thrones to reality, the study’s authors said that while the show obviously “cannot be interpolated into human history,” it still might be instructive to compare the drama of Westeros and Essos to the chaos and violence of real history.
“The political structure of the realm is evidently unstable. The legitimacy of the ruling power is questionable and the rule of law is ineffective,” they wrote, adding “knowledge and reason do not appear to play a significant role in problem-solving and decision-making” and that violence prevention in this kind of society is clearly “not a priority.”
