Last week, suspected Boko Haram gunmen dressed in camouflage descended on the town of Dapchi in Yobe state, north-east Nigeria, firing weapons as they set upon the school and forcing hundreds of students to flee in panic. While most of the students who managed to flee the school have been accounted for, the fate of 110 girls remains unknown, and there are fears they might have been taken as brides by the Boko Haram fighters, according to the country’s Ministry of Information.

“The federal government has confirmed that 110 students of the Government Science and Technical College in Dapchi, Yobe State, are so far unaccounted for, after insurgents believed to be from a faction of Boko Haram invaded their school on Monday,” Information Minister Lai Mohammed said in a statement on Sunday. 

Families of the missing girls have slammed the government for what they see as a slow response to the crisis. A few officials falsely claimed some of the girls had been rescued.

This could become the worst such incident since 2014, when 276 schoolgirls were kidnapped in Chibok, Borno State (also in north-eastern Nigeria). The notorious incident got worldwide attention and triggered a massive social media campaign Bring Back Our Girls.

On Sunday, Nigerian Air Force spokesman Olatokunbo Adesanya also issued a statement, announcing that the air force was mounting a rescue operation with the “immediate deployment of additional air assets and Nigerian Air Force personnel to the northeast with the sole mission of conducting day and night searches for the missing girls… in close liaison with other surface security forces.”

Boko Haram (roughly meaning ‘Western education is forbidden’) began its terrorist activity in 2009 using both suicide bombings and hit-and-run tactics. Since then, over 20,000 people have been killed and two million forced to flee their homes, while the militant group itself has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists. Although both Nigerian and African Union forces have driven Boko Haram from many of its former strongholds, the group remains highly active and launches deadly attacks on both military and civilian targets.

The operation involved efforts by a variety of national and international actors, including the Swiss government, the International Red Cross, the Nigerian military and security services, as well as local and foreign non-governmental organizations.

The girls will be personally welcomed in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, by President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday.

An anonymous government source earlier told CNN that 82 former captives were transported to the northeastern Nigerian town of Banki on the border with Cameroon. He said the girls are now set to undergo a series of medical checks before eventually being flown to Abuja to be reunited with their families after three long years of separation.

There was some confusion about the number of the freed girls, with different government sources providing slightly different accounts earlier in the day. 

A military and a civilian militia source on the ground cited by AFP said the girls that have been temporarily accommodated in military barracks in the town. 

Little has so far been revealed about the details of the operation.

The girls were allegedly exchanged for two high-ranking Boko Haram operatives and an unspecified ransom, according to SaharaReporters citing senior army sources.

The deal had reportedly been struck between Boko Haram senior commanders in Banki and Nigeria’s federal government.

During the first phase of the two-step operation, the two commanders, escorted by representatives of the military and Red Cross, were handed over to Boko Haram in Banki. Honoring their part of the deal, the militants then reportedly took the schoolgirls outside the town, where they were subsequently picked up by the military.

Some eyewitnesses were caught unawares by the supposed clandestine operation.

“We were not sure why the helicopters were landing until we saw two men handcuffed and driven away in a military convoy and also the Chibok girls driven into town under heavy military escort,” Sani Usman, a local resident, told SaharaReporters.

The much-awaited news sparked a flurry of activity on Twitter and Instagram.

The 2014 kidnapping made headlines and prompted exchanges on social media, with celebrities and politicians joining the campaign #BringBackOurGirls calling for the release of the children. Those included former first lady of the US Michelle Obama and Nobel peace prize winner Malala Yousafzai.

The co-founder of the movement, Obiageli Ezekwesili, former Federal Minister of Education of Nigeria hailed the release.

“This is very, very exciting news for us,” she told Sky News.

Meanwhile, the UK Foreign Office warned its citizens on Saturday that Boko Haram was now eyeing to kidnap westerners in Borno state, where Banki is located.

“We have received reports that Boko Haram is actively planning to kidnap western foreign workers in Bama local government area of Borno state, along the Kumshe-Banki axis,” it said in a statement, as cited by The Telegraph. The statement added that British citizens working in the area should be “alive to the potential risk of kidnapping as a means by the terrorist group to raise funds.”

Of the 276 girls, abducted from the school in Chibok, 21 were released last October in a deal negotiated by the Red Cross.

Some 50 girls have managed to escape not long after they were kidnapped while several others have been rescued.

Some 200 girls were believed to be in captivity until the latest release.

The girls, aged 16 to 18 at the time of the abduction, were forced to marry militants with many believed to have had children.

“The educational policies of educational organizations in the Chechen Republic must be conducted without any infringement to national traditions and religious beliefs of the students,” the head of the Chechen parliament’s Committee for Education, Science and Culture, Bekhan Khazbulatov, said in comments on the motion.

Russia does not have a single school uniform, but standard school clothing can be introduced by local authorities at regional and municipal levels.

In Chechnya school uniforms were introduced in the capital city Grozny from September 1, 2016. The current model of the Grozny uniforms includes a red headscarf for girls.

In 2015 however, Russia’s Supreme Court ruled to uphold the ban on Muslim headgear in schools introduced by the authorities of the central Russian Republic of Mordovia. The court rejected a complaint lodged by the Mordovian Muslim community, which claimed that the ban on religious headwear in schools violated the constitutional principle of freedom of conscience. The judge ruled that the ban on wearing headscarves in schools did not prevent Muslims from believing in God and did not infringe on constitutional rights.

Back then, the head of the Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, spoke out against the ban, saying that the Russian constitution guaranteed freedom of conscience to every citizen, including schoolchildren. He also called the ban on hijabs in schools “deadly for society” in press comments.

In early February this year, the Presidential Council for Human Rights released a statement in which it urged the federal and regional authorities to develop a common approach to values and to jointly find an unambiguous solution to the problem.

Members of the council agreed that future rulings must not violate the constitutional principle that describes the Russian Federation as a secular state, but at the same time allowed for special exemptions for regions where the majority of the population were religious.

On Friday, presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the Kremlin did not have a particular position on the issue, adding that the constitution described Russia as a secular state, but that it was necessary to understand if federal and regional authorities could introduce their own regulations concerning school uniforms.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his own position on the issue of hijabs in 2012, when he opposed them being worn in schools. He said that although people’s religious feelings must be respected, Russia is a secular state.

“We should see how our neighbors, European states deal with [wearing hijabs]. And everything will become clear,” Putin said.
