Snohomish County Judge Linda Krese was “surprised” and “outraged” by the deficiency in Washington’s state law which only allowed her to sentence Brian Varela to 34 months in prison – the maximum judgment for an individual with no prior criminal record.

Varela pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter, third-degree rape, and unlawful disposal of remains of Alyssa Noceda last February. According to case documents, the 20-year-old, who was known to use and sell drugs, invited the teenage victim to a house party where he offered her narcotics.

After Noceda snorted a “large line of Percs” [painkillers], he offered her a “dab” of liquid marijuana, at which point the 18-year-old collapsed unconscious. But instead of calling for help or administering aid, Varela raped the high school student.

He then took selfies with his victim and sent them to his friends, and went on playing video games until passing out.

When he woke up the next morning, Noceda was dead. As if nothing had happened, Varela got dressed and went to work, where he bragged about the ordeal to a coworker, who notified the police. When authorities arrived at Varela’s mobile home they discovered the body with her legs broken to fit in a crate. Authorities also discovered that Varela tried to use Noceda’s finger to gain access to her phone to post messages that would give the impression that she had run away from home.

“It’s a joke,” the victim’s mother Gina Pierson, told a local news outlet after the judgment on Thursday, noting that she intends to fight the verdict and demand a life sentence for the killer. “Usually people who do stuff like this don’t get away with a slap on the wrist.”

“You might as well let him walk free with that kind of time,” Noceda’s aunt, Rachelle Palmer added.

Shortly before Kiri (played Felicia Mukasa) is due to be adopted by the Warner family, she is permitted an unsupervised visit with her biological grandparents.

However, during the visit Kiri goes missing and is later found strangled with the blame squarely put on her social worker Miriam Grayson (Sarah Lancashire), who organised the meeting. 

The Channel 4 show explores race and the care system in Britain and whether or not it works. 

Kiri will continue with episode two tonight as the four-part story written by Jack Thorne explores what happened on that tragic day and consequences on the adults involved in her life. 

Ahead of episode two, we’ve put together a list of all the suspects from the Channel 4 show.

IS KIRI BASED ON TRUE STORY?

Nate Akindele

The key suspect is Nate Akindele (Paapa Essiedu), Kiri’s estranged father recently got out of prison and met her on the day she was killed.

Nate was the last person to have seen her alive before she went missing and was murdered.

Also, he’s been kept away from Kiri by the authorities and her biological grandparents, which sounds like it could be for a good reason.  

Simon Warner

Kiri’s teenage foster brother Simon Warner (Finn Bennett) seems pretty shady too and was calmly smoking cigarettes as he watched a search party frantically looking for the schoolgirl. 

He clearly seems unhappy about something, which could be his parents’ desire to adopt another child and the feeling that he’s not good enough for them. 

There was a sense of underlying jealousy when Simon spoke about his mother loving Kiri more than her own biological son. Where was he when Kiri went missing on that day?  

WHERE IS KIRI FILMED?

Tobi Akindele

Biological grandfather Tobi Akindele (Lucian Msamati) deeply cares about Kiri and is devastated when he finds out what’s happened to her. 

However, he falls under suspicion because he allowed Nate to see her – in clear breach of guidelines and it ultimately led to her death. Has he been complicit in her murder? 

A trailer from the end of the first episode revealed that Tobi is not as squeaky clean as he first seems. 

WHO STARS IN KIRI?

Alice Warner 

Foster mother Alice Warner (Lia Williams) claims to love Kiri even more than the child’s biological family but is there something sinister at play here? 

Again, from the teaser preview aired last week, Alice has her own secrets and even her marriage could be in turmoil.  

Jim Warner 

Kiri’s foster father Jim Warner (Steven Mackintosh) again seems fairly benevolent but does he have some skeletons hidden in his cupboard?

Kiri’s grandmother Rochelle (Andi Osho) is another potential suspect, she was the one who convinced Tobi to allow Nate to see Kiri.

Teenager Emily Bowen, now 18, poured One Shot drain cleaner into a viola case owned by Molly Young after she discovered the girl had started dating her former boyfriend.

The instrument was destroyed and Young was severely injured when she pulled her viola case from a shelf and the liquid poured over her legs, the Times reports. She was left “screaming in pain” as the acid burnt her clothes and skin at Knox Academy in Haddington, East Lothian.

Bowen, appearing for sentencing at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Tuesday, admitted recklessly and culpably pouring sulphuric acid into a viola case in the knowledge that it would be removed from a shelf by the victim, causing her injury and permanent disfigurement, on September 18.

Sheriff Michael O’Grady, QC, said he had no other option but to jail her for 21 months for the “utterly wicked” attack. He also imposed a five-year non-harassment order.

“You actually researched this topic and you should have been aware of the potentially horrendous consequences for any young woman maimed by this mechanism,” O’Grady said.

Previously the court was told the girls, both “talented musicians,” were acquaintances who played together in the school orchestra. Bowen, who played the clarinet, fell out with Young when she began going out with one of her former boyfriends.

The court heard the victim, now 18, suffered psychological problems, had “shooting pains and nerve damage” and had undergone painful laser treatment for the burns.

Jim Stephenson, Bowen’s lawyer, said the jailed teen had recently been diagnosed with autism and was suffering from depression.
The case is one among a worrying trend of attacks.

Dr Martin Niall, a burns surgeon at Mid-Essex Hospital, told National Public Radio (NPR) in the US that acid attacks in Britain “are now at levels that one of my colleagues described as epidemic.”

“Everyone, ourselves included, has been shocked by this emerging threat to public health.”

Since 2010, there have been more than 1,900 reports of attacks involving corrosive fluids in London. The British capital has seen a 74 percent rise in the number of acid attacks – from 261 to 454 – between 2015 and 2016.

Already 2017 has seen a spate of assaults. Twelve people suffered burns and in some cases lost their vision after an attack in a Hackney nightclub in May, and two teens riding stolen mopeds attacked five people around London in under 90 minutes in a July crime spree.

Under the current law, police must prove a person found carrying acid has intent to cause harm. Home Secretary Amber Rudd has said acid attackers could in future face life imprisonment.
