Cue up W.G. Snuffy Walden’s Emmy-winning West Wing theme in your head, because the HBO Max special that reunites the acclaimed drama’s original cast promises to make your Barlet-loving heart salute. Premiering Thursday, Oct. 15, A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote marks the first time in 17 years that the original cast of the Emmy- and Peabody Award–winning drama has come together — accompanied by series creator Aaron Sorkin and executive producer/director Thomas Schlamme, for a theatrical stage presentation of the “Hartsfield’s Landing” episode from Season 3. Among the chosen episode’s plotlines, Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman anxiously awaits the 42 votes cast by the titular town in a portentous New Hampshire presidential primary. “It’s about democracy, it’s about the beauty of voting, it’s about living up to your potential and living up to your brilliance,” Richard Schiff, who returns as White House Communications Director Toby Ziegler, tells TVLine. “That’s why it was so special to do this particular episode.” In addition to Schiff, OG cast members Martin Sheen, Rob Lowe, Bradley Whitford, Dulé Hill, Allison Janney and Janel Moloney also reprise their respective roles from the episode, while Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us) succeeds the late John Spencer as White House chief of staff Leo McGarry. TVLine spoke with Schiff about the special’s “poignant” timeliness, what about the staging gave him goosebumps, and more. TVLINE | I don’t think I realized how excited I was for this special until the trailer came out, and I got so emotional watching just those 90 seconds. When’s the last time that anywhere close to this many of you were together in one space? TVLINE | Is a stage reenactment like this something you would be game for anyway, or did the “Get Out the Vote” cause make it a must do? TVLINE | A cash grab? always go back to my acting class in college, when a 20-year-old girl played the mother of another 20-year-old girl, and we were so engrossed in the scene. The master teacher, Earle Gister, who was my mentor, said, “You see, when you believe it, they believe it.” And there was no question that we believed that Kim, who played the mother, was the mother of Otta, who played the daughter, because they believed it. So age never even crossed my mind when Sterling was on set, no. TVLINE | I’m always fascinated when an actor goes to reprise a role that they haven’t played for like 15, 20 years. Was there something you had to remind yourself about Toby to really lock back onto the character? TVLINE | One thing I remember fondly about Toby is he could cut you off at the knees and make you feel like the dumbest person in the room with a casual, muttered aside. In those days, think about what [President George W.] Bush was doing to this country with the Invasion of Iraq, and how different we would be had [Al] Gore been allowed to accept his victory in 2000. Think about where we would be with alternative energy, all these things…. Now when you think about that, it’s mind-boggling. It’s mind-boggling that there’s an existential threat to the very existence of this democracy and that someone is succeeding, with a whole lot of help I’m sure, in stealing this country from us. That’s what makes this particular episode [‘Hartsfield’s Landing”] so much more poignant, because it’s about democracy, it’s about the beauty of voting, it’s about living up to your potential and living up to your brilliance, and to not be afraid of that. That’s another reason why it was so special to do this particular episode. TVLINE | It was swirling around inside that theater.
The lull in the US-China trade war amid new flaring tensions over the arrest of Huawei finance chief can only backfire at Washington as Beijing holds a trump card, veteran stockbroker Peter Schiff has warned. Schiff, who serves as the CEO of Euro Pacific Capital, voiced his grim prediction for the outcome of US’ attempts to make others live by their rules as he sat down with RT’s Rick Sanchez. Beijing is not going to sit idly in this situation and its possible retaliation can undermine the American economy. “I think this has much bigger and broader ramifications …I think long-term, this is going to undermine the dollar and its role as a reserve currency. And when that goes, so does the American standard of living because it’ll collapse,” the strategist told RT America. There are several reasons for Washington to think twice before facing off against China, according to Schiff. First of all, the US is clearly in a bear market despite no one wanting to admit that fact. Otherwise the news on the Huawei’s Meng Wanzhou arrest would not have sent the markets south, the investor explained. Secondly, the US is in a much weaker position compared to Beijing, and the huge trade deficit with China does not give Washington an upper hand. “I think the fact that they [China] supply us with all this merchandise that our economy needs, and the fact that they hold a lot of our bonds and continue to lend us a lot of money so we can live beyond our means, they’re the ones, I think, that call the tunes and we have to dance to it.” The analyst also reiterated his previous doomsday warning on what he calls the US economic “bubble.” He said that as US President Donald Trump inherited it and made it only bigger, the bubble is going to “pop on his watch” leading to dire political and economic consequences. “We are headed for a much worse financial crisis than the one we experienced in ’08, and we are headed for a much greater recession than the one we lived through following that crisis – the one we call the ‘Great Recession.’” the veteran expert concluded. This many of us? It’s been a while. We’ve been together maybe with this many of us but with different groupings, like Joshua Malina (who played Will Bailey) instead of Rob [Lowe]. When we were campaigning in ’16 in Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, that was a pretty big group with Mary McCormack (who played Kate Harper), and Josh, and Allison, and Brad, and Dule. Other than that, it might have been a party at Allison’s house. And I think Brad had a dinner at his house about five or six years ago, and that was the last time we were all together sitting down.
Well, it seems like anytime that they ask The West Wing to come together for some reason or another, it’s for political reasons, so it’s not a surprise that this is to help to get out to vote, that that’s our cause. But just to get back together for the sake of getting back together, other casts get to do that and reap millions of dollars from it, but we of course have to do it pro bono because we’re good people. [Laughs] But that’s what makes it so special, literally special, because there’s a purpose behind it, and it always feels better to do this kind of work for a reason. Otherwise, it’s just kind of self-congratulatory or, you know…
A cash grab, exactly — which I don’t have a major objection to in principle! [Chuckles] But that doesn’t seem to be who we are.
TVLINE | There is one new face in the mix, and while Sterling K. Brown is a fine, fine, Emmy-winning actor, he’s almost a decade younger than John Spencer ever was in the role. Might that change a bit how we perceive Leo in this?
No, because it’s really about gravity. It’s really about the ability to understand, to have the knowledge and the gravity to appreciate each other in the world, and Sterling Brown has that hyperintelligence and gravity that John Spencer had. It’s actually a brilliant choice.
You know, Aaron [Sorkin] was so good at capturing or utilizing elements of who we were as people that eventually it filtered into the role, into the character, so Toby was very much made up of Aaron’s mind but my soul and my body, and it’s hard to separate that after doing it for seven years. In fact, when I go off on political stuff — which I would, of course, not be invited to do if I didn’t play the part — it’s very hard for me to create my own persona as opposed to going there as Toby. Of course, that’s what they would rather see — they would rather see Toby give a speech than Richard give a speech — but it’s easy for me to capture his passion, and his depth, and complexity.
Yes, but that comes from, I think, a real disappointment with humanity while maintaining a hope that somehow we can elevate ourselves to reach our potential. I think that’s what the dichotomy was within him, because his desire to cut people down is minimal. It’s something he could do in his sleep, and it’s not the point. The point is, “Why aren’t people on board with what will make this world a better place?” And when people were not on board is when he became a bit more cutting than he otherwise would be, considering this world is not abiding by Toby’s plan.
TVLINE | Was there a moment on stage when seeing somebody make a gesture or hearing the timbre of a co-star’s voice gave you goosebumps and sent you back 18 years?
I wouldn’t frame it like that, but yeah. I mean, just being across from Martin again, because all of my stuff was with him and a bit with Dulé. Martin has a very particular rhythm with Bartlet, but it was a combination of things. It was Dulé on the set at one point. And then when we’re rehearsing, there’s Aaron pacing back and forth as if he had just written it last week, and Tommy Schlamme with his intense energy. Tommy has the utmost respect for what actors have to do, so despite his hurried disposition to everything, he always yields to what the actor might need for that moment. So that whole dynamic, that perfect storm of ingredients that made up our soup 20 years ago — that’s a mixed metaphor, but you know what I’m saying — was alive again.
And that was awesome. That was goosebumps right there.

Earlier this month, we learned that Disney and Lucasfilm had another live-action Star Wars series in the works. It’s a Rogue One prequel series that will focus on Diego Luna reprising his role as Cassian Andor, and it just got the best showrunner that a series focusing on a Rebel spy could ask for: The Americans executive producer Stephen Schiff.
Deadline has word on the Rogue One prequel series landing Stephen Schiff as showrunner. He’s coming off five years working on the FX series The Americans, one of the best shows to hit cable in the past decade. The series frequently flew under the radar, but it finally got the recognition it deserved when it was nominated for Best Drama Series this year, and Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell landed Best Actor and Best Actress nominations, with the former taking home the trophy.
But the most important thing about The Americans is that it focused on two Russian spies tasked with siphoning the United States government for information after Ronald Reagan is elected president. It was a series that was packed with suspense, drama and style, and if Schiff can bring that level of intrigue to this Rogue One series, then we’re in for a real treat.
We don’t know much about the Rogue One series so far, but it will be focusing on Rebel spy Cassian Andor during the formative years of the alliance. It all takes place before Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and we got a taste of what that seedy world is like at the beginning of the movie, where Cassian Andor has to make the difficult decision of dispatching with one of his sources before they’re found out by Stormtroopers.
One big question we have is whether any other cast members from Rogue One will be brought on board the series. Obviously most of the primary cast won’t be involved since Rogue One is the story that brought the ragtag team of Rebels together for their mission to retrieve the Death Star plans. But there are plenty of other Rebel Alliance members who could be part of the supporting cast, including the beloved Admiral Ackbar, who never appeared in Rogue One, despite being around during that time.
Stephen Schiff is the only name from behind the scenes of the new Rogue One prequel series that we’ve heard about so far, but apparently a writers room has already been put together and production is slated to begin next year.

After the dramatic early drop, US stocks recovered but finished lower after a wild day on Wall Street. By the closing bell, the Dow was down 126 points, or 0.5 percent, recovering most of its early losses. The Nasdaq closed down 0.4 percent, while the S&P 500 shed 15 points, finishing 0.6 percent lower.
According to Schiff, who currently serves as the CEO of Euro Pacific Capital, the stock market is definitely looking like it’s heading for another bear market.
“All the signs are already there. Look at what’s happening out there. The stock market is falling, 40 percent of the S&P is already in a bear market. Look at homebuilders, the housing stocks, the financials, the retailers – all these are the same things that were happening in 2007 leading to that crisis,” the strategist told RT America.
The economist urged people be prepared for not only an economic crisis, but a political crisis as well with the current administration likely to take the blame. According to Schiff, the US national currency is set to meet with the worst losses.
“So, what you’ve got to do is get out of US dollar assets. The dollar is going to be the biggest casualty along with the American standard of living,” he said, adding that foreign stock markets, especially emerging markets, currently depressed by the strong dollar would see a strong rise.
“They are going to see a boom, when the dollar weakens,” Schiff said.
“Look at the price of gold up another eight bucks, but it’s still about $ 1,230, gold’s going to new highs, it was at $ 1,900 in 2011, it’s going to go much higher this time,” the analyst added.
According to the economist, the US household debt that is about $ 15 trillion represents a crucial issue for the standard of living in the country.
“Everybody is loaded up with debt, and it’s not like we began this monetary experiment without much debt. We had a lot of debt in 2008. In fact, the financial crisis was about debt, it was about our inability to pay the debt that we had,” Schiff said.
“But instead of addressing the problem and allowing the debt to be paid down, the Federal Reserve led us down the primrose path into much deeper debt by keeping interest rates at zero and holding them for so long. The Federal Reserve actually encouraged an overly indebted nation to borrow even more money.”
The expert stressed that interest rate hikes would only worsen the current situation, as all the facets of American society that are leveraged to the hilt, including individuals, corporations, the federal government, state and local governments.
“So, everybody is loaded up with debt. And guess what? Interest rates are now finally rising, and that means the cost of servicing that debt is going up, and this is going [to] be a problem just like adjustable rate mortgage was a big problem in 2008, when these things were resetting,” he said. “People couldn’t afford to pay. Well, the same thing is going to happen on a national scale. Rates are growing up, and we too broke to pay.”
According to Schiff, there’s no way to avoid the chaos and normalize things. “It’s impossible, because in fact we kept it going so long that collapse is going to be that much bigger, and sooner we face that reality the better. But no politician wants to face that reality, they want to pretend everything is great.”
The tax cut pushed by the US President Donald Trump is also set to worsen the current concerns about stocks, the economy and the living standard, according to Schiff.
“If the government is collecting less revenue, then the deficits are getting bigger and so the government has to borrow even more money, and that becomes an even bigger problem,” he said. “What we need is smaller government, but nobody wants to shrink government, including Donald Trump, who is now the defender of Social Security and Medicare.
“He wants to launch another nuclear arms race and start the space race, so it’s all about spending more money, so Trump wants to spend more money and cut taxes at the same time. That’s completely reckless.”

“This is a bubble not just in the stock market, but the entire economy,” he told Fox News. Schiff predicts a recession, accompanied by rising consumer prices, that will be “far more painful” than the 2007-2009 Great Recession.
“I think as Americans lose their jobs, they are going to see the cost of living going up rather dramatically, and so this is going to make it particularly painful,” he said.
Stock markets sank on Wednesday and Thursday, led by a steep decline in tech shares and worries of rapidly rising rates which made investors flee the risky stocks.
Both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 posted their biggest one-day drops since February. The Nasdaq notched its largest single day sell-off since June 2016.
US President Donald Trump has blamed the central bank for the selloff, saying the Federal Reserve “has gone crazy.”
According to Schiff, the Fed has been acting irrationally for a long time: “What is crazy is for the Fed to believe that they can raise interest rates without pricking their own bubble.”

Schiff added: “All bear markets start off as corrections. I think this one is probably a bear market. It’s long overdue. This is a bigger bubble than the one that blew up in 2008, and the crisis that is going to ensue is going to be far larger.”

“Erdogan ‘won’ reelection in Turkey this weekend only by decimating the opposition through arrests, violence and squashing freedom of the press. Turkey’s descent into autocracy is another reminder that democracy is under assault worldwide,” Schiff tweeted on Monday.

DO NOT CONGRATULATE.
— Adam Schiff (@RepAdamSchiff) June 26, 2018
Schiff followed this up with the all-caps warning “DO NOT CONGRATULATE.” This part was likely a dig at president Trump, as the White House is currently working to set up a call between Trump and Erdogan to “reaffirm our strong bond,” Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said Monday.
Schiff’s Twitter feed is a stream of anti-Trump sound bites, delivered multiple times daily. The California Congressman regularly blames ‘Russian trolls’ for his country’s misfortune, and blasts the President for his foreign policy dealings with China and North Korea.
Ibrahim Kalin, President Erdogan’s adviser and spokesman, fired back at Schiff, telling him that the Turkish electorate had spoken, and that he should “shut up.”
Kalin’s slap drew cheers from his supporters on Twitter and, back in the US, Schiff’s comment drew a mixed reaction. “You have to respect Turkish people’s choice,” read a reply from Bilal Kenasari, a journalist with Turkey’s Andalou press agency.
At least no Russia interruption discussion etc in Turkish election. And you like it or not, Erdogan is the choice of Majority of Turkish population. You have to respect Turkish people’s choice.

Erdogan was re-elected as president on Sunday, winning 53 percent of the vote. Erdogan now faces into a further five years in power, while his AK party and its allies secured a parliamentary majority.
Sunday’s polls are the first since Turkey switched to a presidential system of governance after an April 2017 constitutional referendum. The plebiscite effectively split Turkish society in half, as the amendment package passed by a close margin, securing 52 percent of the vote.
The victory allows Erdogan to further consolidate political power and implement constitutional reforms. The powers in question include the abilities to pick cabinet ministers from outside of the legislature, pass laws by decree, single-handedly declare a state of emergency and launch extraordinary elections. The post of the prime minister is also set to be abolished.
While opposition leaders see Erdogan’s reforms as a power-grab, Erdogan sees them as the will of the people.
“Turkey is staging a democratic revolution,” he said. “With the presidential system, Turkey is seriously raising the bar, rising above the level of contemporary civilizations.”
Just days into Erdogan’s first term under Turkey’s new presidential system, Turkish authorities ordered the detention of 132 people, in a nationwide crackdown targeting supporters of a failed 2016 coup against the President. According to the UN, Turkey has jailed 160,000 people since the coup attempt.

“The bad news is, we are going to live through another Great Depression and it’s going to be very different. This will be in many ways, much much worse than what people had to endure during the Great Depression,” Schiff said, as quoted by ZeroHedge. “This is going to be a dollar crisis.”
According to Schiff, the US Federal Reserve is propping up the markets to urge people to spend more, but in fact, the wealth created is a bubble.
“It’s actually doing damage. If you create a bunch of phony wealth, and people end up spending money that they otherwise would have saved, you are undermining economic growth,” he said.
In January, Schiff predicted that “the economy is going to blow up like a bomb” because of the Federal Reserve policy, but President Donald Trump will be to blame.
“Unfortunately, that’s what Trump has inherited from Obama. But it’s not even really just Obama, it’s the Federal Reserve. It’s the monetary policy that has been passed like a baton from Clinton to Bush to Obama and now to Trump. And we’re near the end of the game and unfortunately, Trump’s gonna be the fall guy. This thing is all gonna collapse while he’s president,” Schiff said. The tax cuts will give the Democratic Party a reason to blame the collapse all on Trump and the Republicans, the investor added.

Now Republicans are hoping that the decision to shut down the House Intelligence Committee’s probe into supposed Russian meddling in the 2016 election might provide the added bonus of Schiff spending less time on television.
“It’s not shocking that the person most upset by the outcome had used the investigation to launch his TV career,” Republican National Committee (RNC) spokesman Michael Ahrens told the Washington Examiner.
Angered by the decision to end the investigation, Schiff said that Democrats would release their own findings, including a list of leads and witnesses that should be followed up.
A report released by the RNC in February found that Schiff had given a whopping 227 television interviews since Trump’s inauguration. Republicans also frequently accused Schiff of leaking details of the committee’s work to the media. The report described Schiff as a “day-to-day, hour-to-hour fixture on cable TV news.”
Now that the GOP-led House probe has been concluded after finding “no evidence of collusion,” Schiff might have to find something else to do.
“If Schiff stopped going on TV to talk about his Russia collusion conspiracy theory, he’d free up an unbelievable amount of time,” one Republican official said. “Maybe he could use it to track down who killed Jimmy Hoffa or chase UFOs.”
Rumors abound that Schiff has set his sights on even greater fame, however. A story in Politico last year claimed the California Democrat could use the Russia probe as a springboard to run for a seat in the US Senate.
Last month, Fox News mocked Schiff for allowing himself to be interviewed by RT back in 2013. Fox host Tucker Carlson joked that prolific Russiagater Schiff must now be regarded as a “key player” in the supposed Russian conspiracy against the US.
Even more ironic was that Schiff used his RT appearance to discuss his efforts to reform the process whereby the FBI and other agencies can acquire warrants to spy on Americans – an effort that obviously didn’t have much of an effect, given that the FBI later relied on information contained in a dossier paid for partly by Hillary Clinton’s campaign to obtain a warrant to spy on Trump foreign policy adviser Carter Page.
Schiff rejects the idea that he spends too much time on television. He made the denial during an interview on CNN.
House Intelligence Committee concludes its investigation with its final report – there was no Russia/Trump collusion. Adam Schiff placed on suicide watch, now that his TV career may be over. #HouseIntelligenceCommittee
