Thankfully, its centrepiece, the magnificent Gothic cathedral, was largely untouched and the aftermath of the war provided an opportunity for some innovative modern architecture, which contrasts with the city’s more traditional historic core. Here, you’ll find a mixture of classic and street art, modern, Michelin-star restaurants rubbing shoulders with old-fashioned beer halls, a variety of interesting neighbourhoods perfect for strolling around, and even some Roman remains. And you can’t go far without passing a store selling the city’s 4711 fragrance; bottles cost around £27, nearly the same price as the return flight.

CHRISTMAS MARKETS AND FUN FESTIVALS

This year, Cologne starts preparing for the festive season on November 26, when its many Christmas markets are set up, and the city starts to sparkle under reams of twinkling lights. 

You’ll find traditional stalls selling presents and decorations in several areas, including in front of the cathedral, where a giant tree adds to the atmosphere.

Don’t miss Heinzels Winter Fairytale, Cologne’s oldest Christmas market. 

This extends throughout the narrow, cobbled streets of the Old Town, with an iceskating rink on the Heumarkt, not far from the river. Browsing is essential while sipping on a mulled wine.

The other big event in the city’s calendar is the Carnival, held in the run-up to Easter, which culminates in a six-day street festival known as the “Crazy Days” (in 2019, this will run from February 28 to March 6). 

There are parades, balls and fancy-dress parties throughout the city – but be warned, many public institutions close.

OLD AND NEW

Standing proudly on the left bank of the Rhine, not far from the Altstadt, or Old Town, is the magnificent, dual-spired cathedral.

The elaborately-carved structure looms over the skyline, its dark exterior masking a more plain, stone interior, enlivened by a series of stained glass windows.

Construction started in 1248 but it was left unfinished in 1473; happily, it was eventually completed in 1880.

city A few minutes’ walk away, by the old fish market, is a row of pretty, pastelcoloured houses, originally dating from around the 15th century but rebuilt after the war. 

Today they’re mostly restaurants, but you can read about their history on the walls of the orange one. Behind them rises the fairytale castle-like facade of Great St Martin Church. 

Get a flavour of what the city was like just after electric trams were installed here, in 1901, with a virtual reality tour at TimeRide on Alter Markt, a historic market square.

Then take a river cruise, where you’ll get a great view of some of the interesting new buildings Cologne is good at constructing, particularly the Kranhauser, three upside down, L-shaped apartment blocks dating from 2008.

They are named after the cranes which were used to load and unload goods from trading ships. You’ll pass underneath the iconic, arched Hohenzollern Bridge, which connects both sides of the city across the Rhine.

ART AND CULTURE

Aside from fascinating architecture, Cologne has plenty of galleries and museums to keep visitors entertained. 

Contemporary art lovers should head to the Museum Ludwig, behind the cathedral, founded after a local couple donated their collection to the city in 1976. Inside the striking, airy building, you’ll find everything from Picasso to Pop Art.

The Romano-Germanic museum nearby has a range of artefacts from Cologne’s past as a city founded by the Romans in 50 AD – you can still see remnants of fortifications and towers around the centre.

Got a sweet tooth? Then make a beeline for the Lindt Chocolate Museum, set on its own little island on the river. 

Take a tour to learn just how this quality chocolate is produced, and finish off with a hot chocolate, chocolate cake or chocolate bar in the cosy cafe.

If the weather’s good, head to the beautiful botanical gardens of Flora, Cologne’s oldest and most traditional public park, home to more than 12,000 species of plants and flowers.

And you can’t miss a visit to the House of Fragrances 4711, opposite the cathedral, where Cologne’s signature scent has been created since 1792. 

You can learn all about its history on a guided tour or even create your own personal Eau de Cologne during a fragrance workshop.

EATING AND DRINKING

Cologne has its fair share of Michelin-star restaurants; there are currently 13 scattered around the city, including the gourmet, three-star Vendôme.

But its traditional food scene remains popular, and the best way to experience it is to head straight for one of the local brewhauses such as Päffgen, which brews its own beer on site.

The local drink here is Kölsch, which is, unusually, an ale which is stored cold.

Brewhauses serve hearty, traditional dishes, such as blood sausage and potato dumplings.

And Cologne’s bar scene is second to none. No other German city has as many pubs per capita, from mainstream drinking dens to more sophisticated cocktail bars.

Sensorwake burst onto the scene with a smell-based alarm clock that operated on the belief that scents were better than sounds. Now, the company is attempting to make a further in-road into our bedrooms with its next product, the Oria night-time diffuser. The idea being that folks will sleep easier if all they can smell is the sweet perfume that’s being pushed out while you catch some shut-eye.

Part-way through 2017, Sensorwake’s parent company received a cash injection from the Givaudan Group, a Swiss perfume and flavoring giant. Givudan has conducted numerous EEG sleep studies claiming that, when exposed to specific scents, people have longer, and more restful slumber. Oria will use a tailored capsule that can last up to a month at a time before you need to replace it.

Right now, Sensorwake and its founder, Guillaume Rolland, are working on finishing the Oria hardware in anticipation for a Kickstarter. That’s expected to launch in April, with interested users also being given the chance to register to join the beta-testing program for the product. Shipping is expected to take place towards the end of the year, although specifics on the cost of the hardware, and the capsules, is still TBC.
