It also ushered into the fray, however briefly, a guest star who’s had more experience with vampires than zombies. Who was it? Read on…

the walking dead season 9 episode 14 recap daryl michonne scars‘THIS ONE’S BEEN KICKING THE S— OUT OF ME EVERY MORNING’ | The hour began back when Michonne was pregnant with R.J. but still scouring the area for any sign of Rick. On one occasion, she found his gun. On another, she found Daryl and learned that he’d followed the river all the way to the ocean and back — nada. Still, “I ain’t gonna stop looking,” he insisted. “Not ever.” In the present, Michonne had no sooner put back Rick’s — now Judith’s — gun in its box when Aaron announced that Daryl was at the gate — and he wasn’t alone; he was, of course, with Henry, Connie, Dog and Lydia. Despite Michonne’s no-admittance policy, she couldn’t turn away Daryl, so she let them all in so that Henry could get patched up. (Also, who could say no to Dog?) Back in the past — and don’t worry, rather than give you whiplash with this then-and-now business, from here on, I’ll just tell you what happened then all the way through, then we’ll return to the present — Rosita brought some kids to Alexandria’s gate. And what are the odds? Michonne just happened to have once been besties with the group’s lone adult, a woman named Jocelyn (Queen Sugar’s Rutina Wesley, late of True Blood).

the walking dead season 9 episode 14 recap daryl michonne scarsDespite the newcomer’s injuries, she immediately wanted to go back out to save the other youngsters they’d left behind. Rather than let her do so in her condition, Michonne had an older boy from the group lead her, Aaron, Eugene, Rosita and Gabriel to a place where Jocelyn had once hidden her troupe. And lo and behold, that was where the angel-faced moppets were. That night, after Michonne marveled at what excellent hunters the kids were — they’d killed enough game to open their own barbecue joint — Jocelyn shared that the adults that had been with them “just… broke. The children… they grow, they learn, they’re capable of anything.” Jocelyn also revealed that she could still read her old college classmate like a book: For instance, she knew that Michonne’s expression meant that she had to keep searching for her missing man. In the morning — I’m not 100 percent clear on whether this was the following morning or some time later — Michonne and some other parents went to pick up their offspring from a sleepover with Jocelyn’s kids. Only neither were Jocelyn or the kids at the house in which they’d been put up. Ruh-roh.

the walking dead season 9 episode 14 recap daryl michonne scars‘I TOLD YOU KIDS ARE CAPABLE OF ANYTHING’ | Upon finding a dead Alexandrian as well as the pantry and infirmary raided, Michonne and her fellow parents realized that Jocelyn had spirited away the kids — all of ’em! Teamed up with Daryl in search of the youngsters, Michonne blamed herself for letting her guard down with her old friend. It wasn’t her fault, though, Daryl said. “Some people just got so much evil in their hearts, they hide it like they’re wearing a mask or something. This is on her.” After the two of them tracked the whippersnappers to a school, those angel faces suddenly looked decidedly devilish. One shot Daryl with an arrow, and another knocked out Michonne. Then, with Jocelyn observing, the kids coldly prepared to brand their prisoners. “The strong survive,” said little Linus as he burned an X into Daryl’s back. “And thrive,” added his twisted teacher, bragging to Michonne that she’d taught them to be merciless. After all, “they can’t be soft, not now.” With that, young Winnie singed Michonne’s flesh. Later, as you’d expect, Michonne and Daryl got free.

the walking dead season 9 episode 14 recap daryl michonne scarsAfter our heroes split up to search for Judith and the Alexandrians, Michonne first was slashed in her pregnant belly by a kid, then nearly bludgeoned to death (or at least unconsciousness) by Jocelyn. In the end, Michonne was forced to kill not only her old friend but… aw, man. Poor Michonne. She invited Jocelyn’s gang to come back and live in Alexandria, but their teacher had warped their minds so badly that they preferred instead to attack Michonne. The older boy even ordered Winnie to slaughter the Alexandrians! In the end, Michonne wound up having to kill all but one of Jocelyn’s JV murder club. (Winnie chickened out and ran. And while we’re on the subject of Winnie, how slowly did she move when given the order to kill? She hadn’t even made it into the camper in which the Alexandrians were huddled when Michonne was done dispatching her fellow brats.) At least Judith and the Alexandrians were OK. For a second, Michonne feared that Jocelyn had warped her brain, too. But then Lil’ Ass-Kicker cried “Mommy” and ran to her.

the walking dead season 9 episode 14 recap daryl michonne scars‘YOU HAVEN’T HEARD ALL THE STORIES’ | In present-day, Daryl told Michonne that, after Henry was stitched up, they’d head to the Kingdom. “This wasn’t the plan,” Connie wrote to Michonne, “but I’d do it again. With different shoes.” (And it has gotten pretty hard not to like Connie, no?) When Henry noted that he’d have a scar forevermore, Lydia said that she liked it. “You’ll never forget what you did. Neither will I.” Upon getting the (former?) Whisperer alone, Michonne attempted to put an idea in her head. “To save my people, I’ve had to risk others,” she said. “I’ve made my peace with that. Might be easier if the only life I had to risk was my own, if I could just walk away and… make everyone else safe. Now that wouldn’t be so hard. Think about that.” Nearby, Judith cross-examined Daryl like a top attorney, getting him to admit that he’d helped Lydia even though it might have put Hilltop in danger, then busting him when he said Michonne was right, keeping her and Judith safe is what’s important. “No, it isn’t,” she argued. “I mean, not just us.” (Somewhere, Carl had to have been smiling… )

When Daryl set off that night with Connie, Dog, Henry and Lydia, he suggested that Michonne tell a disgruntled Judith the truth. “She’s not ready,” she replied. “Neither am I.” What’s more, “she gets to keep being a kid as long as I can help it.” Getting in the last word, Daryl made it count. “That’s not just a little kid ya got there,” he said. Later, when Michonne went to Judith’s room to take Daryl’s advice, she found her daughter missing. Immediately, she headed for Negan’s cell and demanded that he tell her what the two of them talked about. In addition to stories about the Saviors war and how much like Carl Judith is, Negan discussed with the little girl her dim view of her mom’s no-newbies policy. Off the prisoner’s remark that Judith might be doing what Michonne would — “not taking s— lying down” — Michonne ran home and found a letter in Judith’s gun box. “I’m sorry, but I need to go,” it read. “Our friends need help.” The following morning, Michonne at last tracked down her daughter, just in time to save her from a bunch of walkers (many of whom the kid had handled fine, it should be noted). “We need to talk,” Michonne told her.

‘I THOUGHT I WAS TOO LATE’ | Back in Alexandria, Michonne went through the whole Jocelyn story, right down to the moment when she’d been afraid that the madwoman had warped Judith’s brain. “You didn’t look like you because of the blood; that’s all it was,” Judith said. Turned out, she remembered everything! Why hadn’t she spoken about it in so many years? “Because it made you sad,” Judith explained. All this time, Michonne marveled, “I thought you didn’t understand [why Alexandria had been shut off] because you didn’t know, but you did.” How on earth did they get to this place? “Our friends need our help,” Judith said matter-of-factly. And then she spelled things out as simply as beautifully. “You’re my mom,” she told Michonne. “You chose to be because you love me and I love you, and loving someone means doing whatever it takes to keep them safe, right? But when did we stop loving Daryl… Aunt Maggie… Carol… the King?” They hadn’t, Michonne insisted. “Then why,” Judith asked, “does it feel that way?” (Game, set, match.)

As the episode drew to a close, Michonne took Judith to the grave that she and Rick had dug for Carl. That day, “I made a promise to never bury another child again,” she said. But after losing Rick and almost losing Judith, “I was scared.” And since she wasn’t the only one left fearful in the wake of the Jocelyn incident, the decision was made to make Alexandria only about the people who lived there. But, she now thought, “we have to protect the people we love — all the people we love. And we will.” With that, the two of them set off in a horse-drawn convertible to give Daryl & Co. a lift to the Kingdom. Of course, since no good goes unpunished, the group was spotted reaching their destination by Whisperers who were only too eager to report back to Alpha. So, what did you think of the episode? Rutina Wesley’s guest turn? The explanation of Michonne and Daryl’s scars? Hit the comments.

Can Sea Creature Slime and Stem Cells Put an End to Scars? https://briefnews.eu/can-sea-creature-slime-and-stem-cells-put-an-end-to-scars/ https://briefnews.eu/can-sea-creature-slime-and-stem-cells-put-an-end-to-scars/#respond Thu, 21 Sep 2017 02:10:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/can-sea-creature-slime-and-stem-cells-put-an-end-to-scars/

Dr. Maral Skelsey recently examined a 10-year-old girl who was extremely self-conscious — and in pain — from a scalding accident that had left a discolored burn on her leg. If the girl had been born in the ’90s, she likely would have been given a compress and steroids and sent on her way. But these days, Skelsey, the director of the Mohs Surgery Unit at the Dermatologic Surgery Center of Washington, D.C., has a battery of treatments in her arsenal. Using compression, silicone and a fractionated laser, which divides light into thousands of microscopic beams for deeper and faster healing, Skelsey was able to reduce the discoloration significantly, freeing up the girl to wear shorts and go swimming without feeling uneasy.

Skelsey’s patient is one of the 450,000 burn victims who receive treatment in U.S. emergency rooms each year — scalding is common among minors, who make up around 55 percent of all hospital-treated injuries, according to a 2016 issue of The Burns Journal. But the number of patients who now walk away pain- and scar-free is increasing as innovators develop new methods to help healing.

On the basic science level, we’re learning how to make a scarless wound.

Dr. Maral Skelsey, Dermatologic Surgery Center, Washington, D.C.

Wisconsin-based Stratatech is at the vanguard of the revolution. Its StrataGraft treatment consists of a sheet of living skin cells that is stapled over burns. Phase Three trials of the procedure, funded in part by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command team, began in June. Perhaps sensing a winner, the U.K.-based specialty pharma outfit Mallinckrodt purchased Stratatech last year for $ 76 million.

A study underway at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine shows that healing cells can be turned into fat cells, which don’t produce scar tissue. In Brazil, burn victims are being dressed in strips of sterilized tilapia, while in New York, a biotech firm has developed a stem cell gun that sprays a water-based solution containing stem cells harvested from a small patch of the patient’s skin on the wound, where healing begins at the cellular level.

In sum, a mix of cosmetic and medical concerns is projected to boost the global scar-treatment market to $ 34.5 billion by 2025, according to Grand View Research. By comparison, in 2000 the cost of caring for children with burns in the U.S. was only about $ 211 million, according to the World Health Organization.

It’s an exciting time to work in wound care, but doctors and patients are quick to inject a note of realism. “There’s so much data getting published,” Skelsey says, warning that the journey from lab to end consumer can take a while. “On the basic science level, we’re learning how to make a scarless wound,” she says. “The idea is to figure out how to replicate what happens in fetal skin — that’s the holy grail for reduction of surgical scars.” The fetus is capable of regenerative healing without scars — and if that mechanism could be reproduced outside the uterus, it would be groundbreaking.

It’s a goal that Tomas Svoboda, CEO of the Swiss-German company Elanix Biotechnologies, has pursued for the past few years. Elanix’s hero product embeds progenitor cells, which can differentiate into specific types of cells, in a bioactive skin dressing. The result: healing by stimulating the patient’s body to produce new cells. Clinical trials on a gel form of the product began in Taiwan in July.

Svoboda also notes the financial benefits of such a treatment for overextended public health budgets: An intensive care unit stay for burn patients can cost $ 5,000 per day. With the gel, Svoboda contends, those patients could be kept in day-unit beds for $ 1,000 per day. “This product is proven to provide less painful healing, more flexible skin and less scarring,” he says, adding that he hopes it can offer some relief to the estimated 11 million people who suffer from burns every year.

In England, a space technology engineer and a plasma physicist joined forces to launch the Fourth State. The company’s main product is a plasma-generating pen called the Nebulaskin, which is used to smooth scars and reduce healing time. It’s currently undergoing trials at a number of British hospitals, with a burn-treatment version of the pen in the works. The pen delivers a jolt of energy to the skin, using an inert gas to protect the epidermis while stimulating subdermal plasma; the only side effect is a temporary “sunburn.” Meanwhile, South Korean scientists are combining the slimy secretions of mussels, which contain sticky amino acids, with the skin protein decorin and a collagen molecule to produce a superglue-like healing bandage that reduces scarring.

Then there’s the category of “Why didn’t we think of that first?” Scientists at Boston University have developed a hydrogel dressing that can be washed off — meaning no more painful bandage changes. And companies in Iceland and Brazil are using fish scales to treat burns — one of the projects is funded in part by the Department of Defense. It turns out that tilapia skin is chock full of collagen proteins — far more than human skin. Factor in elasticity and the material’s moisture-retaining properties, and you have the ideal wound dressing — once it’s sterilized. “I never want to be the first person to try something,” Skelsey says. “I like to wait for the data and clinical experience. But tilapia scales are pretty benign, and I wouldn’t hesitate if I’d exhausted all options.”

“War and military medicine have contributed significantly to the advancement of burn and resuscitative care due to traumatic injuries,” says dermatologist Chad Hivnor, a former U.S. Air Force physician. The San Antonio–based Hivnor, who specializes in using lasers to treat scars, believes that genomics eventually will lead to more personalized treatments, with skin sprays and stem cell therapy creating complication-free wound care — potentially scarless skin, forever. Now that’s something we can all get behind.

Swedish comedian plans ‘man-free’ music festival after mass sexual assaults scars popular event https://briefnews.eu/swedish-comedian-plans-man-free-music-festival-after-mass-sexual-assaults-scars-popular-event/ https://briefnews.eu/swedish-comedian-plans-man-free-music-festival-after-mass-sexual-assaults-scars-popular-event/#respond Wed, 05 Jul 2017 04:06:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/swedish-comedian-plans-man-free-music-festival-after-mass-sexual-assaults-scars-popular-event/

A Swedish comedian has proposed what she terms a ‘man-free’ music festival after the cancellation of an event last weekend amid a slew of sexual assault reports and at least four allegations of rape.

Comedian and radio host Emma Knyckare first posited the idea on Sunday, with the idea soon gaining support.

“What do you think about putting together a really cool festival where only non-men are welcome, that we’ll run until ALL men have learned how to behave themselves?” Knyckare tweeted.

Knyckare’s Tweet received a mixed response, but she was seemingly buoyed by multiple offers of help and support. She took to Instagram the following day to confirm that plans for the festival were already taking shape.

“Sweden’s first man-free rock festival will see the light next summer. In the coming days I’ll bring together a solid group of talented organizers and project leaders to form the festival organizers, then you’ll hear from everyone again when it’s time to move forward,” the post read.

Over the weekend, Sweden’s annual Bravalla music festival was called off amid a spate of sexual assault and rape reports. Swedish police have confirmed they are investigating four potential rapes and some 22 counts of molestation reported on the grounds of the three-day musical festival, which prematurely concluded July 1.

As news of the incident hit the headlines, the company in charge of the festival, FKP Scorpio, issued a statement, denouncing the violence and announcing that the event would be canceled next year.

“Words cannot describe how incredibly sad we are about this, and we most seriously regret and condemn this. This is not f**ing okay. We do not accept this at our festival,” the company said.

It’s not that hard to understand the changes that have controlled the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere during past climate changes. But methane (a potent greenhouse gas itself) does some mysterious things. A lot of it is secreted away in seafloor mud in the form of an odd substance called “methane hydrate”—methane gas in molecular cages of water ice that only survive at low temperature and high pressure.

The thawing of these methane hydrates would release the gas into the ocean and atmosphere. For several rapid climate change events in Earth’s history, this has been proposed as a possible source for sudden increase in greenhouse gasses.

Many questions remain unanswered about methane hydrates, including a rather big one: could our current climate change thaw some hydrates, contributing to further warming in the near future? After all, there are places where plumes of methane bubbles can be seen rising from the seafloor today. Some of those plumes have been active for thousands of years, and (counterintuitively) they might even have the net effect of removing greenhouse gases. But other areas have inspired concern about the risk of accelerated warming.

Kozzy takes shine off Glory0:48

A-League: So while Perth got the win, City were far from their best, which means next week should be a much bigger challenge.

Tom Smithies – Football EditorThe Daily Telegraph

SYDNEY FC captain Alex Brosque has moved quickly to put pressure on semi-final opponents Perth Glory, predicting that Kenny Lowe’s side will carry a mental burden from three heavy defeats to the Sky Blues already this season.

Glory will travel to Allianz Stadium on Saturday night after a 2-0 win at Melbourne City in the elimination final, and while Brosque admitted that was a result to give them confidence, he warned that “parking the bus” could have dangerous consequences against the Sky Blues.

Sydney have scored 11 times in three games against Perth this year, conceding only two in reply, and Brosque suggested Glory face a balancing act in how attacking they dare to be.

“They’ll come here and know it will be a tough match,” he said. “If they draw on all three games this year, they were all very tough for them. It’s got to be on their mind.

“I don’t think it’s in their style of play (to sit back), they have to focus on their strengths which are going forward and scoring goals. If they park the bus against us, they sort of tried against us in the last game down there and held out for a certain amount of time but we fed on that.

FINALS: One record Sydney don’t want to break

“We saw they were sitting back on us and started to put more pressure on them and scored a few goals. You could see the confidence drain out of them and I don’t think it’s in their nature to sit back.

“But it’s a tricky one for them because if they go forward and leave themselves open, and we can get in between the lines, it starts to become an open game and we have the players to really hurt them. We’ve been going forward really well against them and scored a lot of goals, for us it will be doing the same.

“In saying that, the game against Melbourne City should give them confidence that they can achieve another upset.”

Brosque suggested that the biggest danger to Sydney lies in the distraction of playing a finals game, after a regular season where they have dominated more than any team previously. Having collected the Premier’s Plate with a record number of points, Brosque said his team’s approach to Saturday’s semi-final could not be even fractionally different.

“If we treat it like just another match, which can be hard to do, and do as we have in the last 27 rounds, then nothing will change,” he said. “We’re expecting to win and expecting to have the same outcome as the past three games.

“If we start thinking about other things then we can quickly find ourselves in the same position as Melbourne City, where passes start going astray and your structure’s not there. All of a sudden you’re one or two down and you’re thinking about the end of your season rather than the grand final. “
