Somalia has been gripped by a perpetual cycle of drought, famine, and violence for decades, but 2017 could mark a tipping point in the nation’s fortunes, as the twin threats of climate change and an Islamist insurgency threaten an impending cataclysm.

At the start of 2017, Somalia required $ 1.5 billion to reach 5.5 million people at risk of famine. The total number of people in Somalia in need of humanitarian assistance rose by 500,000 between 2016 and 2017, from 6.2 million to 6.7 million, according to figures from the Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit.

At present, 3.2 million people face “Crisis and Emergency” levels of food insecurity as a result of drought, internal displacement through conflict, and a sustained bombing campaign by Al-Shabaab militants. On a global scale, one in every 110 people is currently displaced by violence, famine, or persecution, the worst such displacement in human history, including both World Wars.

In addition, Somalia is also facing its worst outbreak of cholera in five years as a direct result of the forced movement of people and a subsequent lack of adequate hygiene and water facilities.

So far in 2017, there have been 38,000 cases and approximately 683 deaths from cholera. Somalia is also facing a measles outbreak which has affected over 7,000 people this year, 65 percent of whom are under the age of five.

These figures were expected to be compounded by the rainy season and projected flooding in several regions of the country. However, thus far, the rains have underperformed, compared with neighbors Ethiopia and Sudan, who have both experienced flooding.

One million people have already fled to neighboring Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, and even Yemen, which is facing its own famine crisis, Oxfam reports.

Persistent and recurring cycles of violence have prevented Somalia from establishing and maintaining any kind of coherent and functioning transport, agricultural, and sanitation infrastructure.

Al-Shabaab militants have carried out 71 attacks that have claimed the lives of 784 people so far in 2017. The deadliest twin attacks took place on October 14 and claimed over 300 lives marking the worst terrorist bomb attack in Somali history.

For context, there were a total of 395 IED attacks in Somalia throughout 2016 which killed 723 and wounded over 1,100, which marked a 110 percent increase from 2015. While the number of attacks decreased, the overall intensity of the explosives used and the destructive consequences greatly increased, further destabilizing an already precarious security situation and exacerbating the country’s multiple humanitarian crises.

Somalia never really stabilized for any great period of time following the unification of Italian Somaliland and British Somaliland in to form the Somali Republic on July 1, 1960. Immediately after the assassination of former President Shermarke on October 15, 1969, Mohamed Siad Barre led a military coup which seized power. Siad Barre was viewed as a dictator by many and ruled with an iron fist while declaring Somalia a “Scientific Socialist” state.

“When I came to Mogadishu…[t]here was one road built by the Italians. If you try to force me to stand down, I will leave the city as I found it. I came to power with a gun; only the gun can make me go,” Siad Barre said, as quoted by Mohamed Diriye Abdullahi in his book, “Culture and customs of Somalia.”

Barre ruled Somalia from 1969 to 1991 but was overthrown and exiled by militias. The power vacuum left by the collapse of the military junta shortly thereafter has led to an ongoing system of tribalism, with North Somalia, or Somaliland, cutting ties with the South and the Puntland region following suit.

The fractured clan politics within the country, combined with a dearth of natural resources, led to increased competition for power and resources, allowing Islamist extremists to take hold as just another faction vying for control.

“Clans form the bedrock of Somali society and identity, but political exploitation of their rivalries has blocked every attempt at peace since Somalia collapsed into war in 1991,” Reuters reported in 2011.

Since 1991, Somalia has experienced at least seven periods of famine resulting from droughts. Concurrently, Somalia has been in a state of civil war between rival factions, clans, and insurgents since the collapse of the Siad Biare government in January 1991.

Apart from Somalia’s two main rainy seasons – ‘Gu’ from April to June and ‘Deyr’ from October to the end of November – the country experiences relatively little precipitation. When these rainy seasons fail, as is the case so far in 2017, both agriculture and pastoral industries collapse as inflation precludes the vast majority of the population from buying food.

Already this year, the ‘Gu’ rains failed to meet expectations, leading to a low harvest in one of the main bread baskets in the country’s south, the vast majority of which is under the control of Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab.

“Because of the increase in food prices, [the famine] has been a boon for al-Shabaab’s recruitment campaign because when you don’t have purchasing power to buy the food, you will be encouraged to be recruited because then you will be saved, and you can use that salary or you could be given food,” Bruno Geddo of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Somalia said of the 2011 famine that killed an estimated 260,000 people. Little has changed in the interim.

As persistent drought and governmental failure compound the suffering of the people, ordinary citizens are forced to either flee or cooperate with the Islamist extremists in order to survive. Al-Shabaab, acutely aware of the predicament facing the general population, provides its own infrastructure programs in order to boost recruitment and increase its hold over the southern and eastern spheres of influence.

In addition, in 2011, Al-Shabaab expelled foreign NGOs from its territory.

“We want our people to be free of NGOs and foreign hands. We want them to depend on each other and to stand free of outsiders,” Sheikh Abu Abdullah, the al-Shabab governor of Lower Shabelle province, told Al Jazeera previously.

Given the extent of global conflict and displacement, the situation in Somalia is likely to remain extremely precarious for years to come.

‘We didn’t come here to kill’: Hundreds of ISIS wives, scarred kids stranded in UN-backed Iraqi camp https://briefnews.eu/we-didnt-come-here-to-kill-hundreds-of-isis-wives-scarred-kids-stranded-in-un-backed-iraqi-camp/ https://briefnews.eu/we-didnt-come-here-to-kill-hundreds-of-isis-wives-scarred-kids-stranded-in-un-backed-iraqi-camp/#respond Mon, 11 Sep 2017 06:25:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/we-didnt-come-here-to-kill-hundreds-of-isis-wives-scarred-kids-stranded-in-un-backed-iraqi-camp/ The constant fear of revenge and bleak hopes of returning home are the factors that shape the lives of former wives of Islamic State militants with whom RT met at an Iraqi army camp. Many claim they only followed their terrorist husbands along an ill-fated route.

Hundreds of women, mostly of Turkish, central Asian, Russian and European origin, and the children they bore to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS,ISIL) fighters that were killed, captured or forced to flee after government forces liberated the city of Tal Afar have been housed in a UN-sponsored camp in Iraq.

The exact location of the camp and identities of its residents are kept secret by the UN which fears that any information leaks will compromise the site’s security and put hundreds of vulnerable lives at risk.

In exclusive footage from the camp, RT’s Murad Gazdiev reached out to some of the Russian-speaking women who told him they are now cherishing only one dream.

“I want to go home. I’m here by accident. I really want to go home… Please get me out of here,” a widow of an IS widow told Gazdiev, crying.

She said her husband perished during the months-long Iraqi offensive on Mosul earlier this year. The city’s much-awaited recapture spurred the liberation of the nearby ISIS stronghold of Tal Afar, held by militants for three years. As the remaining jihadists surrendered and were taken into custody by the Kurdish militia, their wives were handed over to Iraqi forces.

The woman claimed her attempts to escape the clutches of IS were in vain.

“It was impossible to get out of here. I tried running away, but nothing worked.”

Many women, who had overcome numerous obstacles and dangers en route to the IS-controlled territory, did not have the slightest idea of what life under the terrorist group will entail, another one confessed.

“Most women here came with their husbands. We didn’t come here to fight, or to kill. We came here to live,” she said, adding that once someone arrives at an IS-controlled territory, there is no way back.

“My mother came for me, and they held her too. ISIL wouldn’t let anyone go, even if you needed medical treatment.” she said, adding that she was desperate to leave as well. “Who would want to live there?”

Another woman told Gazdiev it did not occur to her that the road to the jihadist hell was one-way and she would have to be stranded there despite her desire to go back to Ukraine.

“I came here willingly, but I didn’t want to stay. I wanted to go back… but I couldn’t. I saw the fighting, the war, it hit me psychologically.”

While many IS wives say they now feel lost and scared of the future without their killer husbands, there is also the other side of the story, as some chose to end their lives on the path of terror.

“When we came here, one of the women with us blew herself up. Soldiers started shooting. We ran, and one woman hid under a car. We knew she had heart problems, and I saw her die. That was it,” a woman who witnessed the incident told Gazdiev.

The deceased woman’s three-year-old daughter Maryam remained at the camp. Shortly before her death, the mother said she wished for her daughter to brought back to her grandparents in Russia’s Dagestan.

After years spent with the terrorists, many women and children are deeply traumatized by the daily horrors they have encountered. Scores of children have been orphaned by the war.

The children are now being cared for by UNICEF, with dozens of Russian-speaking children of parents who came to Iraq to join IS stranded in orphanages.

RT has launched its ‘Bring them home’ campaign after relatives recognized some of the children in one of the videos RT filmed in an orphanage in Baghdad. Several children have already been brought back home with help of the Chechen and Dagestani authorities.

The Iraqi camp’s administration is now working to establish the identities of the women, which is a challenge as many lack even basic documents.

However, there are also those who are reluctant to alert their relatives of their whereabouts.

“I don’t think my parents know that I am here, but I told my daughter and asked her not to tell them. My parents are elderly and ill – they could have a heart attack,” a woman said.

But the young demographic is also helping some industries. Ad agency Moosylvania analyzed 15,000 responses from millennials — age 17 to 37 — that the agency has collected over the last five years on their favorite 100 brands.

There are many complex reasons millennials’ preferences differ from prior generations’, including less financial stability and memories of growing up during the recession.

“I think we have got a very significant psychological scar from this great recession,” Morgan Stanley analyst Kimberly Greenberger told Business Insider.

We’ve selected their 25 favorites that are poised to grow.

Ryan Reynolds Drops the First Look at a Scarred and Scary Josh Brolin as Cable in ‘Deadpool 2’ https://briefnews.eu/ryan-reynolds-drops-the-first-look-at-a-scarred-and-scary-josh-brolin-as-cable-in-deadpool-2/ https://briefnews.eu/ryan-reynolds-drops-the-first-look-at-a-scarred-and-scary-josh-brolin-as-cable-in-deadpool-2/#respond Mon, 07 Aug 2017 16:26:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ryan-reynolds-drops-the-first-look-at-a-scarred-and-scary-josh-brolin-as-cable-in-deadpool-2/ josh brolin as cable

He’s no Keira Knightley, but Josh Brolin does look plenty proud as Cable in the upcoming Deadpool 2.

Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool marketing machine extraordinaire, posted two first looks at a heavily scarred and cybernetically enhanced Josh Brolin as Cable on his Twitter. And true to form, he threw in a “premium Cable” joke too.

Just like Reynolds’ previous posts of Zazie Beetz as Domino last week, the Deadpool actor dropped a whopping two photos of Brolin’s Cable: one close-up of Brolin holding a finger up to his mouth and shushing the audience as his cyborg eye glows yellow, the second a full body shot where we can see Cable’s machine arm and machine gun, as well as a beat up teddy bear he carries on his person.

“We all have that one, grumpy, heavily armed Uncle from the future,” Reynolds wrote in the caption for the close-up shot.

Brolin has been beefing up for the role of Cable in 2018’s Deadpool 2, the sequel to 2016’s surprise hit Deadpool, which starred Reynolds as Wade Wilson, a foul-mouthed, self-aware superhero. In the closing credits of Deadpool, Wade promised that Deadpool’s infamous buddy Cable would appear in the sequel and be played by Keira Knightley, in a riff off on the after-credits bumper in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Knightley was busy I guess, and Brolin got cast in the part instead. Since then, he has expressed excitement for the role, posting several pictures of himself working out for the part — and promoting active wear. Hey, he can multitask!

In the comics, Cable is a fellow mercenary descended from Scott Summers and a Jean Grey clone, but his backstory may change for the film. Brolin’s Cable is a time traveling soldier described as being “in many ways the opposite of Deadpool.” In other words, he could be the stoic foil Reynolds’ wisecracking superhero demands.

Cable is an adversary-turned-buddy to Deadpool, first crossing paths with the Merc with a Mouth when Deadpool was tasked with assassinating him. Cable and Deadpool were soon paired together in an extremely popular comic book series and eventually became members of the X-Force, a strike team of mutants with a harsher edge than the regular X-Men.

Reynolds has promised that Deadpool 2 will lay the groundwork for an X-Force movie, and with essential members like Cable and Domino already a part of the Deadpool sequel, it seems like we’re not long for it.

Deadpool 2 is set to hit theaters June 1, 2018.

Grease star's life scarred by tragedy as Sandy hit by cancer again https://briefnews.eu/grease-stars-life-scarred-by-tragedy-as-sandy-hit-by-cancer-again/ https://briefnews.eu/grease-stars-life-scarred-by-tragedy-as-sandy-hit-by-cancer-again/#respond Thu, 01 Jun 2017 08:02:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/grease-stars-life-scarred-by-tragedy-as-sandy-hit-by-cancer-again/

As Sandy, the teenage goody-two-shoes who finds her inner rock’n’roll vixen in Grease, Olivia Newton-John captured the hearts of a generation. And although she went on to enjoy spectacular success as a solo pop artist, behind the glamour and infectious songs the actress and singer has faced more than her fair share of tragedy.

This week Olivia announced the news her fans have been dreading for decades: the breast cancer she thought she had beaten after first being diagnosed in 1992 has returned.

In a statement on Facebook her spokesman said: “Olivia Newton-John is reluctantly postponing her June US and Canadian concert tour dates. The back pain that initially caused her to postpone the first half of her concert tour has turned out to be breast cancer that has metastasised to the sacrum.”

Those close to the 68-year-old star insist she remains “very positive” but Olivia’s diagnosis is the latest struggle in a life frequently punctuated by heartbreak. Born in Cambridge, she moved to Australia with her parents, brother Hugh and sister Rona when she was six and formed her first pop group aged just 14. Through the early 1970s she racked up a series of minor hits and after moving back to Britain represented the UK in the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest (coming a respectable fourth behind Abba’s Waterloo).

But it was the role of Sandy opposite John Travolta in 1978’s Grease that was to make her a megastar and launched a career singing smashes including 1981’s Physical, which topped the US charts for 10 weeks. In 1984 she married actor and singer Matt Lattanzi and two years later gave birth to daughter Chloe – but if the future seemed golden for Olivia then less than a decade later tragedy was to strike.

In 1992 she lost her beloved father Bryn to cancer… and in a cruel twist of fate on the same weekend received her own breast cancer diagnosis. She underwent a partial mastectomy, chemotherapy and breast reconstruction as well as alternative therapies including massage, meditation and yoga.

She also channelled her pain into music. “When I went through breast cancer, I wrote an album called Gaia,” she said. “Everyone at some stage of life goes through loss. We’re connected as human beings. We feel the loss of others. We’re hoping it will help people connect and share and feel.”

After beating the disease, further struggles were to come as she and Lattanzi divorced in 1995. And then 10 years later, in June 2005, new love Patrick McDermott mysteriously disappeared from a fishing boat trip off the Californian coast. His body was never found and he was declared dead in 2008. “Grief has no time period,” said Olivia. “People need to know that because they feel, ‘Gosh, I should be over this by now’. But truthfully you’re never really over it.”

Bizarrely reports have since emerged alleging that McDermott faked his own death and had moved to Mexico where he was living with a new girlfriend.

Meanwhile daughter Chloe had her own problems. Aged 15 she was revealed to have a £550-a-week cocaine addiction and an eating disorder that saw her weight drop to just 5st 8oz. Now 31 and recovered, Chloe described in a 2013 interview how fame “totally messes you up”.

She added: “I don’t blame my mother for my problems but I would never want to raise a child of my own around the cult of celebrity. I don’t want to say anything to hurt my mother. It was very difficult for her. She’d never faced anything like that before and she didn’t know how to deal with it.”

That same year tragedy was to strike at the heart of her family again as sister Rona died of brain cancer. If losing her father, the disappearance of her boyfriend and the battles of her daughter were all heartrending, the death of Rona was perhaps the biggest blow. “Your sister is someone you can share things… that no one else understands,” she said. “I don’t have that now so that was really hard to get used to. I would pick up the phone with something to tell her about my brother or someone that we’d known for ever, so that was really odd to let go of.”

She started a brain tumour fund in Rona’s name and is a high-profile campaigner for cancer research, as well as founding the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre in Melbourne, Australia.

In 2008 she married John Easterling, founder and president of the natural remedy firm Amazon Herb Company, which aims to promote the benefits of botanicals from the Amazon rainforest.

But if life had since seemed to have settled back into something like normality – the latest tour was to promote new album Liv On, inspired by Rona’s death – this week’s news has once again been devastating for the star. In typical style she has vowed to beat the latest setback just like all the others in her life.

“In addition to natural wellness therapies Olivia will complete a short course of photon radiation therapy,” continues her statement. “And she is confident she will be back later in the year, better than ever, to celebrate her shows.”
