Former President Bill Clinton said Democrats can retain control of Congress in the 2022 midterms, but warns Republicans will "scare the living daylights out of swing voters" in an interview with CNN's Fareed Zakaria.
Zakaria asked Clinton if Democrats, who have seen encouraging signs about their midterm prospects in recent weeks, can break the decades-long trend of the president's party losing control of Congress in midterm elections.
"Absolutely we could hold both these Houses, but we have to say the right things," Clinton told Zakaria in the interview, which aired Sunday. "And we have to know the Republicans always close well. Why? Because they find some new way to scare the living daylights out of swing voters about something. That's what they did in 2021 when they made critical race theory sound worse than smallpox."
In 2021, Republicans swept the top three statewide offices in Virginia, which had previously been trending towards Democrats, and put up an unexpectedly strong showing in New Jersey's gubernatorial race partly by mobilizing voters, especially parents, over both the teaching of race in schools and COVID-19 induced school closures.
"They just scare people," Clinton added. "And in the end, the breakpoint in American politics is not that much different than the 90s. You still have to get those people, it's just that there's so many fewer of them, because as the parties have gotten more ideological and clear and somehow psychically intolerant, they pull more and more people towards the extremes."
—Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) September 18, 2022
Increased polarization and partisanship since Clinton held office in the 1990s means fewer persuadable swing voters and fewer willing to cross party lines. The 2020 election, for example, saw record-low numbers of voters splitting their tickets between elect. But Clinton still argued that "there's some people who are hanging on there and trying to think, and trying to understand what's going on."
Zakaria also asked Clinton about the recent death of Ken Starr.
The hard-charging special prosecutor, who died at age 76, doggedly investigated the Clintons first in the Whitewater probe, over their real estate dealings in Arkansas. The investigation then zeroed in on Clinton's extramarital affair with then-White House intern Monica Lewinsky, which became the biggest scandal of his presidency and led to his impeachment.
"Well, I read the obituary, and I realized that his family loved him, and I think that's something to be grateful for, and when your life is over that's all there is to say," Clinton said of Starr."But I was taught not to talk about people that I — you know. I have nothing to say. Except I'm glad he died with the love of his family."

Before the 17th episode of Bull Season 4 got underway on Monday night, series lead Michael Weatherly stepped on screen to deliver a viewer advisory.
“Tonight’s episode deals with a citywide panic, not unlike the fears and concerns people are experiencing all over the world at this moment,” Weatherly said, alluding to the coronavirus outbreak. “Before we start, we wanted to remind you this is a work of fiction. It was written and filmed months ago. And its only purpose is to entertain you.”
In the episode that followed, which was titled “The Invisible Woman,” Weatherly’s Dr. Jason Bull took on the trial defense of Dr. Natalie Reznick (played by guest star Brooke Bloom), an anthrax expert who was accused of orchestrating a series of anthrax attacks that terrorized New York City. Though the facts were against his client, Bull set out to prove that the city was in such a rush to get the bacteria off the streets and calm the public’s hysteria, they arrested the wrong person.
Along the way, we saw one of Bull’s colleagues toss aside an N95 mask when the anthrax threat appeared neutralized; there was also a scientist who made mention that the U.S. government had slashed funding for adequate anthrax research.
If you watched the episode, did it hit at all close to home for you?

Superstore is looking towards the future in Season 5, as the fate of Cloud 9 hangs in the balance.
While Mateo’s immigration imbroglio will be at the forefront of the premiere (more details on that here), the workplace comedy will also set a course that drives the episodes in a new, forward-thinking direction.
“An overall theme for this season is the future, stemming from the fact that a lot of retail stores are trying to prove that they’re still relevant in the face of online shopping,” co-showrunner Jonathan Green tells TVLine. “Cloud 9 [has] introduced an initiative called Cloud 9.0,” and “there’s a lot of automation going on.” That includes a new, self-acting floor cleaner with a very familiar name.
Changes at the Ozark Highlands store ultimately will inspire big, potentially life-changing decisions. “[Season 5] talks about the future being in the air, and all of our characters are dealing with versions of that,” Green says. Jonah, for instance, “is inspired by the union movement to think about stuff beyond Cloud 9,” while new district manager Maya (played by One Day at a Time‘s Justina Machado) “starts making Amy think about her [own] future more.” And while fans should not be overly concerned, floor worker Glenn is poised to suffer a health scare, “which leads him to think about his priorities a little bit.”
Superstore returns Thursday, Sept. 26 at 8/7c on NBC. For more intel on Season 5, check out TVLine’s Fall TV Preview Spectacular and watch a sneak peek below.

Jean Slater (played by Gillian Wright) has been on a never-ending rollercoaster since she discovered she may have cancer.
She spent weeks hiding her diagnosis, but the truth eventually came out when Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace) found one of her appointment letters.
Kat went on to tell Jean’s daughter Stacey Fowler (Lacey Turner), who begged her mother to undergo further tests.
But an anxious Jean fled EastEnders last week, leaving her family fearing for her safety and well-being.
On Monday’s instalment of the BBC soap, Stacey lied to the police and told them she received a phone call from Jean, saying she was suicidal.
The barmaid hoped the information would force officers to speed up their investigation and it appeared to be working as PC Campbell rushed to the house to speak to her.
However, after questioning Stacey the detective soon learned she had made up the suicide threat, as she did not feel the police were taking Jean’s disappearance seriously.
“She’s probably out there dying from cancer,” Stacey shouted at the officer.
“She’s tried to kill herself before!”
Screaming at the top of her lungs, she raged: “How do I know she’s not out there doing the same thing right now?”
Stacey was then warned by the PC about “wasting police time” and her family feared she was struggling with her mum’s decision to run away.
Later, Shirley Carter (Linda Henry) told the Slaters Jean had got in touch with her to say she was fine and asked to be left alone for a few days.
“She’ll be back for her appointment next week,” Shirley assured the family.
The Slaters were relieved by the news, but later Jean made an alarming discovery, which could prove difficult to handle.
Jean, who suffers from bipolar disorder, find out she was running out of her medication.
With very little medication left, will she return home sooner? Or, weather the storm?
No doubt, Jean will find herself in an unimaginable predicament, one EastEnders boss Kate Oates recently alluded to.
Of Jean’s storyline, the producer spilled: “She’s going to have a challenge coming her way where we look at her mental health through her physical health.
“So I’m excited about that one too.”
EastEnders continues Thursday on BBC One at 7.30pm.
Emmerdale aired an emotional double episode tonight as viewers finally saw Bob Hope (played by Tony Audenshaw) receive help.
It comes after a plethora of bad fortune over the last few weeks where he has experienced money issues, being thrown out of the B&B, breakdown in relationships as well as most recently losing his job at the pub.
This week, viewers have tuned in to see the former post office owner sleep rough.
It started with a night in the cellar of the Woolpack, but once Chas (Lucy Pargeter) and Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) found out he then turned to sleeping in Brenda Walker’s (Lesley Dunlop) car.
Last night however, after being forced to return Brenda’s car keys, Bob had nowhere else to go and spent the night on a park bench.
Scenes in tonight’s episode showed vicar Harriet Finch (Katherine Dow Blyton) find Bob in the early hours of the morning, freezing and blue.
In a blind panic she called the emergency services and he was rushed to hopsital to be treated for hypothermia.
After an initial assessment followed by medical treatment, Bob was given the all clear apart from resting.
However, during a conversation with Brenda by his hopsital bed, did Bob reveal his turmoil has not ended and the only way for him to move forward is to leave Emmerdale for a while?
It comes after Bob was discussing how he was going to try and get his life back on track.
He said: “It’s obvious I’m going to have to move away. There’s no work for me here.”
But Brenda tried to convince him otherwise and suggested: “Go back to the pub?”
“Not after what I said to Chas. No, no I’m not going back, couldn’t stand the pity. It might not look like it but I’ve still got some pride.”
During the rest of the episode Bob struggled to come to terms with his situation and be honest to Brenda about the changes to his life.
So much so he kept bringing up his pride and how panicked he felt about everyone in the village knowing what had happened to him.
Does this confirm a potential exit for Bob?

But, will Moira Dingle (Natalie J. Robb) go as far as lying to the police to become Cain’s alibi the night Joe was killed?
A Jet2 flight from Manchester Airport was grounded in Prague following a “potential bomb threat” on the plane. According to a passenger, a “threatening note” had been found in one of the aircraft’s bathrooms. Travellers were told to evacuate without their belongings on arrival at Prague Airport. Police proceeded to check all cabin baggage and interview passengers. Firefighters also arrived on the scene.
Fliers were held at a terminal gate for around four hours during the search, 26-year-old Beth Parkinson told Manchester Evening News.
She revealed that a single toilet cubicle at the front of the aircraft was locked for roughly 30 minute before the plane landed.
“We were just told the flush was broken and we should use the toilets at the back of the plane,” she told M.E.N. “Everything seemed normal during the flight.
“As soon as we landed the captain said someone had left a threatening note in a toilet and we were not to move and had to leave everything on the plane.”
Beth added that they were given water, tea and biscuits using the wait but were given no further information about the threat.
Prague Airport confirmed the incident on Twitter. They posted “Hello, @PolicieCZ checked the aircraft because of potential bomb threat.
“At the moment all cabin baggage need to be checked, estimated time is after 10 pm. Please contact handling employees on site for further information. Thank you.”
They later added: “Update: All checks are finished with negative results. The flight back to Manchester will be operated by backup aircraft around midnight. Departing PAX should contact their handling agents in the gate for additional info.”
Passengers also took to Twitter during the incident, with some claiming the threatening note was a picture of a bomb.
“Sons out there. Had to evacuate the plane and take nothing with them. No bag passport nothing. Was hoping someone could get info,” one Twitter user posted.
“Prague airport tweeted bomb scare. A picture of a bomb was found in the toilet and now al bags are searched 1 at a time. Police everywhere (sic).”
A Jet2 spokesperson told Jet2: “Czech Authorities were called to undertake security checks on one of our aircraft in Prague yesterday, due to a security alert.
“The aircraft has been cleared to return to service following these checks. We apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused, however the safety and welfare of everyone onboard will always be our number one priority.”
Express.co.uk has contacted Prague Airport for further comment on the incident.
Last week a Ryanair passenger was left needing surgery after a laptop fell on her head.
The woman – whose name and age are not known – was disembarking a Ryanair flight from London Stansted to Lisbon, Portugal when the incident took place.
It is understood she was removing her hand luggage from the overhead locker of the aircraft. As she did so, a laptop fell out and hit the passenger on the head leaving her with a 2.5cm opening on her scalp.

“They didn’t do that with President Obama with the church,” Trump said during a Fox News interview. “The horrible situation with the church. They didn’t do that. They put my name in the headlines.”
President Donald Trump again bemoaned what he perceives as unfair treatment from the news media on Monday night, nearly a week after the attempted mail-bombings that targeted his political critics and Democratic leaders.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

US President Donald Trump has slammed the mainstream media for using the recent “sinister” string of anti-Democrat bomb mailings to blame him for inciting political violence. He said he would do all in his power to stop it.
Trump previously dismissed the notion that he bears any responsibility for the crude pipe bombs mailed to high-profile Democrat figures, including former President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former Attorney General Eric Holder, as well as big party donor George Soros and the CNN headquarters. A total of 13 such explosive devices have been discovered so far, but none actually exploded.
Speaking at a rally in Charlotte, NC, Trump accused the media of working hard to make him look guilty.
We have seen an effort by the media in the recent hours to use sinister actions of one individual to score points against me and the Republican party.
The suspect, Cesar Sayoc, 56, was apprehended on Friday and is facing up to 46 years in jail for five federal crimes. Sayoc, who has a vast criminal record, including making bomb threats, was reportedly an ardent supporter of Trump, attended Make America Great Again (MAGA) rallies and had his van plastered with pro-Trump slogans and anti-Democratic stickers.
Trump compared the mail bomber to the shooter who wounded House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) during Congress baseball practice in June 2017. Several people were injured in the shootout and Scalise was on the edge of death when he was taken to hospital.
Yet when a Bernie Sanders supporter tried to murder congressional Republicans and severely wounded Steve Scalise and others we did not use that heinous attempt at mass murder for political gain, because that would have been wrong.
Trump appeared to blame the media for creating a divisive environment and fueling the attacks. “Everyone will benefit if we can end the politics of personal destruction,” he said.
Before the suspect was arrested, Trump took to Twitter to lament that the bomb scare had consumed all the news coverage, distracting Americans from the upcoming mid-term elections. In his tweet, he referred to the plot as “this “Bomb” stuff.”
Republicans are doing so well in early voting, and at the polls, and now this “Bomb” stuff happens and the momentum greatly slows – news not talking politics. Very unfortunate, what is going on. Republicans, go out and vote!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 26, 2018
While there were reports that some of the devices might have been dummies, FBI Director Christopher Wray told the media on Friday that the IEDs were real, albeit rudimentary pipe bombs. Since none detonated, however, it’s unclear whether the suspected intended them as threats or just botched their construction.
