  • Starbucks announced on Monday that it plans to eliminate single-use plastic straws globally by 2020.
  • The chain is rolling out more strawless lids, which are already in use for certain drinks, as well as developing new plastic-free straws.
  • The announcement comes at a time when cold beverages are making up an increasing percentage of Starbucks’ sales. Cold drinks account for more than half of the company’s beverage sales, according to Starbucks.

Starbucks is making a massive effort to eliminate single-use plastic straws globally.

  • Starbucks could be pricing itself out of the market, Bernstein warned clients on Tuesday.
  • The firm says Starbucks coffee is priced about 38% higher than competitors, which is especially hurtful in the afternoon.
  • With already high prices, Starbucks could struggle if the price of raw coffee beans increases.
  • Follow Starbucks’ stock price in real-time here.

  • A judge has ruled that Starbucks must add cancer warnings to its coffee cups in California.
  • A lawsuit, filed in 2010, accused coffee companies of violating state law by not warning consumers that a chemical in their products could cause cancer.
  • Starbucks, along with other chains supported by the National Coffee Association, is considering appealing the case.

Starbucks drinkers in California could expect to see cancer warnings on their coffee cups in the future.

On Wednesday, a Los Angeles judge ruled in favor of a nonprofit that sued 90 coffee companies on the grounds that they have failed to comply with a state law that requires companies to warn consumers about chemicals in their products that could cause cancer, Reuters reported.

  • The syrup was discontinued as Starbucks revamps it tea menu.

Starbucks has cut its peach green tea lemonade from the menu — and people are furious.

This week, people began posting on social media saying that Starbucks had discontinued its mango and peach syrups. The peach syrup is a key component in the chain’s peach green tea lemonade, a beverage with a cult following.

Starbucks confirmed with Business Insider that the peach syrup was no longer on the menu. According to spokesperson Sanja Gould, the peach and mango syrups were discontinued in July with the debut of the new Teavana Shaken Iced Tea Infusions.

“As a result of the new approach to flavoring iced tea, peach and mango syrups were discontinued at that time and available only while supply lasted,” Gould said.

Gould suggested fans of the peach green tea lemonade try the Peach Citrus White Tea Infusion Lemonade or the Pineapple Black Tea Infusion Lemonade.

Starbucks is in the midst of revamping its strategy as it attempts to grow tea sales to $ 3 billion in the next five years, nearly triple its current figures. In July, Starbucks announced plans to close all 379 Teavana stores in the coming year. Earlier in November, the chain announced it had reached an agreement to sell the Tazo tea brand to Unilever for $ 384 million.

Here’s what Wall Street is looking for from Starbucks’ earnings report (SBUX) https://briefnews.eu/heres-what-wall-street-is-looking-for-from-starbucks-earnings-report-sbux/ https://briefnews.eu/heres-what-wall-street-is-looking-for-from-starbucks-earnings-report-sbux/#respond Fri, 03 Nov 2017 01:47:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/heres-what-wall-street-is-looking-for-from-starbucks-earnings-report-sbux/ Starbucks baristaDan R. Starbucks will report fourth quarter earnings after the bell on Thursday.

Wall Street is expecting the Seattle-based coffee chain to post earnings of $ 0.55 per share on revenue of $ 5.81 billion, according to Bloomberg data. Analysts are also expecting adjusted net income of $ 795.52 million.

Ahead of the earnings announcement, Wall Street’s outlook for the company is mostly optimistic. 26 of the 34 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg rate Starbucks’ stock as “buy,” while eight give it a “hold” recommendation.

The away-from-home coffee market continues to grow at roughly 5% every year, estimates from Bernstein show, with Starbucks barely outpacing that growth. Still, away-from-home coffee makes up just 30% of all coffee consumption, according to data from the National Coffee Association, so there’s more room for the segment to grow.

Wall Street will also be watching Starbucks’ digital rewards program, which has showed slower growth in recent quarters.

Shares of Starbucks are down 0.38% so far this year.

Starbucks has almost fully penetrated the US markets — here’s where it could expand next (SBUX) https://briefnews.eu/starbucks-has-almost-fully-penetrated-the-us-markets-heres-where-it-could-expand-next-sbux/ https://briefnews.eu/starbucks-has-almost-fully-penetrated-the-us-markets-heres-where-it-could-expand-next-sbux/#respond Wed, 25 Oct 2017 22:49:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/starbucks-has-almost-fully-penetrated-the-us-markets-heres-where-it-could-expand-next-sbux/ coffee drinking Starbucks woman caffeineBoyloso/Shutterstock

  • A new study shows the average American Starbucks is within one mile of 3.5 other locations.
  • To keep growing, it will need to look to less-saturated markets overseas.

Starbucks may have hit a saturation point when it comes to opening its basic cafe units in the United States.

A recent study from BMO Capital Markets pointed out that the chain’s average store has 3.6 other Starbucks cafes within a one-mile radius. That means adding new locations in most of its markets won’t add sales. Instead, it will cannibalize customers from existing stores.

To keep growing, at least in its home market, the coffee chain won’t succeed by adding thousands of new locations. Instead, Starbucks’ U.S. growth will be fueled by getting more money out of its existing customers by offering higher-end, higher-priced experiences.

What’s next for Starbucks?

When former CEO Howard Schultz stepped down in April, he did not move into retirement or a hands-off role. Instead, he went back to his entrepreneurial roots. The man who made his idea of creating a “third place” after home and work took over efforts to grow Starbucks’ Roastery and Reserve brands.

The coffee chain has one Roastery location in Seattle that serves as sort of a coffee theme park for visitors and a test lab for the company. The original Roastery offers a higher-end, more-barista-led coffee experience for visitors and its serving as a model for premium expansion for the company.

Starbucks has plans to eventually open 20-30 Roastery locations around the world with New York on track for 2018 and Chicago following in 2019. In addition, the new group being led by Schultz plans to open several hundred Reserve stores all around the world, while adding Reserve bars to up to 20% of its global locations by 2021.

Why Reserve?

If Starbucks has become a place to work or casually meet with friends over a drink, the Reserve and Roastery experiences will be much more about the coffee. The Seattle Roastery offers limited-edition coffee beans, and drinks that can’t be sampled anywhere else. It also operates somewhat like a wine bar where the barista will, if you want, learn about your preferences before crafting a personalized coffee for you.

Obviously, these locations will drive higher check prices and adding Reserve Bars to existing stores may expand the hours a location remains busy. So far, the sample size is small, but in 2016sales at the original Roastery grew by 24% over the previous year. During the chain’s Q4 2016 earnings call, Schultz credited that to an average ticket that comes in at four times what a typical customer spends in a regular store.

A bright path forward

In addition to Starbucks’ opportunity to grow its premium brand, the company also has a huge opportunity in China. In August, the company said it would spend $ 1.3 billion to buy the half of its East China joint venture it did not previously own. That gives the coffee giant full control of 1,300 stores in three Chinese provinces. In addition, Starbucks plans to open 5,000 stores in Mainland China by 2021.

Big things ahead

Starbucks has a growth plan that may take decades to realize. It will take years to build out its premium strategy in the U.S. and abroad, while its global expansion plans will also drive growth for years.

The company clearly has found a model that works across the world with its traditional cafes. As it grows its footprint with those, it can pick and choose which markets will support Roastery locations, as well as Reserve stores or bars.

Morgan Stanley on Wednesday said that Starbucks’ stranglehold on the high-end coffee market is here to stay, despite some big names getting into the business.

“Given the increasing importance of super premium chains to the category, investors–both public and private–are paying closer attention,” analyst John Glass said in a note.

“Many of the high profile artisanal ‘Third Wave’ coffee brands have yet to develop significant footprints relative to Starbucks, and most highlighted here are highly concentrated in the Northeast or the West Coast.”

While they might not make a dent in Starbucks’ business just yet, Morgan Stanley is still keeping tabs on them. Nestle, after all, paid $ 500 million for a majority stake in Blue Bottle Coffee, even though the chain only has 40 locations.

Here are some of the smaller coffee brands Morgan Stanley thinks could be making headlines soon:
