Medical drama Grey’s Anatomy aired season 16 in September and now we wait until 2020 to find out what’s going to happen next in the series. Actress Sandra Oh played Dr Cristina Yang for the show’s entirety up until 2014 when she left the series. So why did the actress make her exit from the ABC series? Oh was one of the show’s breakout stars, where she played Cristina Yang, a researcher, Chief Medical Officer, and Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Klausman Institute for Medical Research. During her time on the show, she was engaged to Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington), had a tumultuous relationship and marriage with Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and a good friend of the head of general surgery Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo). In her very last episode, Cristina hopped in a cab, headed to the airport and left Seattle to start her new life as a director of cardiothoracic surgery in Switzerland. READ MORE: Grey’s Anatomy: Why did Kate Walsh really leave Grey’s Anatomy? The actress told The Hollywood Reporter in 2013 the reason behind leaving the show for good was because she had played Cristina Yang for long enough. She said: “Creatively, I really feel like I gave it my all, and I feel ready to let her go. “It’s such an interesting thing to play a character for so long and to actually get the sense that she wants to be let go as well. “[Cristina] wants to be let go, and I am ready to let her go.” From the sounds of it, it looks very unlikely Oh will return to Grey’s Anatomy anytime soon. Speaking to Extra in April during the premiere of Killing Eve season two, she said: “I just got to tell you, creatively you have moved on and while I know, and I deeply appreciate it, because I can feel it from the fans how much they love Cristina and that the show also still keeps Cristina alive, for me, [Killing Eve] is my home now. “This is where I am. I am Eve and that’s where I plan to stay as long as the show will have me. CBS’ Survivor has revealed the cast for Season 39 of the long-running reality-TV competition — as well as announced how series vets “Boston Rob” Mariana and Sandra Diaz-Twine fit in. Premiering on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 8/7c, Season 39 brings back “legendary winners” Boston Rob and Sandra — who together have plated more than 200 days of Survivor — as mentors to a group of 20 new castaways. As such, Boston Rob and Sandra will serve as the “idols” in this season’s “Island of the Idols” twist, in that some castaways will be afforded the opportunity to visit the Island of the Idols to learn skills and strategy. Each castaway who visits the “island” must then decide if they should put their knowledge to the test for a chance at a possible advantage in the game… or risk losing something very important in the process. “It’s a Survivor boot camp where each week, players will be instructed on a different facet of the game and then have a chance to test what they’ve learned for a shot at an advantage,” explains executive producer and host Jeff Probst. Learn more about “Island of the Idols” in this video, then read on for cast list: The castaways for Season 39 include: Ronnie Bardah (35) Elizabeth Beisel (26) Missy Byrd (24) Dean Kowalski (28) Tom Laidlaw (60) Aaron Meredith (36) Vince Moua (27) Karishma Patel (37) Elaine Stott (41) Chelsea Walker (26) Lauren Beck (28) Molly Byman (27) Janet Carbin (59) Kellee Kim (29) Jason Linden (32) Jack Nichting (23) Noura Salman (36) Tommy Sheehan (26) Jamal Shipman (33) Dan Spilo (48) The headteacher was the victim of an armed siege in her own home on the ITV soap in last night’s terrifying double bill. It all came about as Max (Jordan Reece) sought revenge on Jessie’s (Sandra Marvin) son Billy Fletcher (Jay Kontzle). However, the troubled Emmerdale character wasn’t home so it was Jessie, Marlon (Mark Charnock) and his daughter April (Amelia Flanagan) who were caught up in the ordeal and held at gunpoint. After an altercation when Billy returned home, Jessie fell into Marlon’s arms and was taken off in ambulance but her fate remained unclear. Now, actress behind the role, Sandra Marvin, has spoken about the scene on Twitter. “Oh Jessie! Thank you for your messages following tonight’s #Emmerdale … And yes Amelia Flannigan @pinkferg84 is an absolute star! Such an amazingly talented young lady! So much love for her @emmerdale xxx,” she wrote to her followers. But could Sandra’s message thanking fans for their support signal that Jessie is gone for good? Viewers will have to wait and see if she manages to pull through the horrific ordeal. The shooting unfolded after Max forced Jessie to get Billy to come back to the house. When he arrived, he helped young April escape as armed police surrounded the building. Billy tried his best to reason with Max and the pair began to struggle. He got the gun off Max and then set about delivering a brutal beating. Poor Jessie was horrified and told him to stop before the situation escalated and she was shot. Meanwhile, Billy could’ve got Max out of his life for good as he had the chance to kill him then and there, but before he could the police burst through the door. Jessie was then carted off into an ambulance and Marlon was left distraught. Elsewhere in the village, it looks like one couple will be splitting up following a major betrayal. Faith Dingle (Sally Dexter) and Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell) have seen their relationship blossom in recent months but it seems as though the end is near. The arrival of Bear Wolf (Joshua Richards) caused some degree of tension and it will get too much for Eric next week. He prepares to fight wrestler Bear in the ring but Faith halts the fight leaving Eric to storm off. But is it really over for good? Viewers will have to wait and see. Emmerdale continues tonight at 7pm on ITV.

Oh’s sketch-comedy debut came a week and a day ahead of the launch of Killing Eve Season 2, a show that has already earned her a Critics’ Choice, a Golden Globe and a SAG award. And while there was no parody of the aforementioned BBC America drama to be found during this weekend’s broadcast, Oh had plenty of great showcases and proved herself a total pro. (Don’t be surprised if she picks up two trophies at this year’s Emmys: one for Lead Actress in a Drama Series, and the other for Outstanding Guest Actress in Comedy Series.)
As good as she was, though, the sketch that will have everyone talking on Sunday morning featured Oh in a supporting role opposite repertory player Chris Redd, who once again portrayed embattled Empire star Jussie Smollett in a meeting with Fox executives.
Scroll down for all the highlights…
BEST: FUTURE SELF
There’s no denying it: Tishy definitely got that “good goo goo!” Oh was an absolute riot as the 47-year-old, Four Loko-fueled girlfriend of Mikey Day’s future self, whose appeal was… definitely up for debate.
BEST: THE DUEL
This digital short featured Oh as the hapless victim of a Victorian-era duel gone horribly wrong. The more excessive the wounds, the funnier the sketch got, as multiple bullets ricocheted and struck the woman whose affection was up for grabs.
HONORABLE MENTION: NETWORK MEETING
Yes, SNL went there. Redd’s Smollett (who was first seen in the March 9 “Shark Tank” sketch) arrived late for a meeting with Lee Daniels in a Make America Great Again hat and alleged that he’d been attacked — again. The studio audience seemed unsure how to react as Smollett presented a plastic bag full of supposed evidence (including Crest White Strips, three letter ‘K’s and… a Teletubbies doll?) and referred to himself as the “gay Mike Tyson.” The skit was more awkward than it was funny, but it wasn’t a total failure, either. (Watch it above.)
HONORABLE MENTION: DISCOVER CARD
This Ego Nwodim-led commercial skit — which doubled as a parody of the Jordan Peele film Us — was far too short to have any lasting impact. As far as SNL parodies go, last season’s “A Kanye Place” was significantly better.
WORST: KREMLIN MEETING
Oh had very little to work with in the role of Kim Jong Un’s translator. She appeared opposite Beck Bennett’s Vladimir Putin in this dud of a sketch, during which the Russian president tried to convince those in his inner circle that he was still a “powerful, scary guy,” even after the Mueller report (or rather, a four-page summary of the report) concluded that Trump did not in fact collude with Russia.
WORST: ROOTS OF ROCK
It’s hard to go wrong when you put Kenan Thompson at the center of a sketch and just let him sing (“What Up With That,” anyone?). This, however, was a total misfire. Jarvis Filmore’s relentless encores would have been amusing had his song about electric shoes been the least bit funny, but it wasn’t. It was four minutes of Thompson rambling incoherently through a melody with very few actual lyrics.
What were your favorite sketches this week? And what missed the mark? Watch all of the highlights above, then grade Oh’s Saturday Night Live hosting stint in our poll.

“I hung out with her that night after she won,” McKidd tells TVLine. “She invited me to her after-party. It was pretty amazing to see her get such props and be honored in that way. I was a bit
tearful. She saw me across the room and she ran over and we hugged for a long, long time.”
McKidd, meanwhile, says Oh aced her job as Globes’ co-emcee. “She was terrified about the hosting thing,” he notes. “It’s not what we [as actors] are trained to do. But she nailed it. I was really proud of her.”
McKidd has maintained a tight relationship with Oh since the actress departed Grey’s four years ago. What’s the secret behind their enduring bond? “We really trust each other and know each other,” he says. “During all of those hours working together [on Grey’s] we watched each others’ lives unfold… When she was going through a hard time, or I was, [we] leaned on each other.
“Some co-stars hate each other,” McKidd adds with a chuckle. “But I feel very fortunate in these last years of my career to have been blessed with Sandra Oh and now [current Grey’s squeeze] Caterina Scorsone.”
Grey’s Anatomy kicks off the second half of Season 15 this Thursday (8/7c, ABC).

The Netflix thriller is about a group of survivors after a mysterious presence has taken over the planet – some kind of creature that can drive whoever looks at it to commit suicide. But at the beginning of the movie, before anybody is aware of it, there are many fatalities. Fatalities including someone who audiences would perhaps be expecting to hang around for much longer.
WARNING: Minor spoilers for Bird Box ahead.
Sarah Paulson’s character Jessica meets a shocking early death, despite being one of the most famous names in the cast.
In an interview with HeyUGuys, Bullock said that Paulson was cast because she has the ability to make you care about her in a very short amount of time.
“Susanne [Bier, director] and I came up with Sarah’s name at the same time, literally on the same call,” she said.
“We needed somebody who, if you only had her for a few minutes and she was gone, she would leave a massive vacancy. And Paulson is someone who can leave that vacancy.
“Since we are that close and we have that fun, there was an instant history that I think you could feel.
“So as sisters you have to feel that the two people knew eachother.
“[Paulson] had a lot of things she had to accomplish in her short time on screen, and she does it effortlessly.”
Bird Box has become a hit for Netflix since its release, with lukewarm – if unspectacular – reviews behind it.
The film picked up a 65% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus reading: “Bird Box never quite reaches its intriguing potential, but strong acting and an effectively chilly mood offer intermittently creepy compensation.”
Alongside Bullock and Paulson, stars include Trevante Rhodes, John Malkovich, Jacki Weaver, Rosa Salazar and Tom Hollander.
Bird Box is streaming on Netflix now.
The Sandra Bullock-fronted thriller is about a mysterious presence roaming the Earth, and anyone who stares directly at it is somehow driven to commit suicide. The survivors of the initial outbreak figure out how to make it through: they have to roam around wearing blindfolds. It’s a great, incredibly dramatic element of the film – but surely it was difficult to shoot?
In a new interview, director Susanne Bier has recalled how it was all put together.
“They were wearing blindfolds, and Sandra Bullock was hitting trees, hitting the cameras and, at one point, getting a proper wound,” she told Radio Times.
“But she had trained with somebody who teaches blind people how to navigate – how to, through sound, figure out distances – so she had training in how to move around without looking.
“Still, with the speed and everything, it was kind of nerve-wracking, but we wanted it to have a feeling of being very real. Which it did.”
She added: “I don’t think it necessarily takes longer, but it puts pretty huge strain on one’s sense of harmony or one’s calm.
“The steady cam operator had to start with Sandra every day kind of moving around, anticipating her next move and trying to be out of the way. But it was pretty exciting.”
In the same interview, Bier had explained why we never see the horrifying monsters.
“The creatures mess with your mind; they tap into your deepest fear. And, because they tap into your deepest fear, we can’t ever see them, because that deepest fear is going to be different whoever you are,” she reasoned.
“For me, the most exciting point in any thriller has always been that point right before you see the monster, right before you see the villain. That has always been the most frightening, and I wanted the whole movie to have that atmosphere.
“To be completely honest, every time I see a monster in a movie I kind of go, ‘Is that all?’”
Bird Box, which is based on a novel, also stars Sarah Paulson, John Malkovich and Trevante Rhodes.
Bird Box is now streaming on Netflix.
After giving one heck of an audition at this year’s Emmy Awards, Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh got the gig: The Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Killing Eve stars will co-host the 76th Annual Golden Globes, TVLine has learned.
“Sandra and Andy are the perfect choices to host this world-class event,” said Paul Telegdy and George Cheeks, co-chairmen of NBC Entertainment. “They bring wit, charm and style to a room filled with the very best of film and television. It’s sure to be another unforgettable fun-filled night.”
Added Meher Tatna, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association: “We’re excited to welcome Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg as co-hosts of Hollywood’s Party of the Year. Both Golden Globe Award recipients have continually showcased their talents in film and television, and we can’t wait to see what their undeniable chemistry will bring to the Golden Globes stage.”
Of course, Samberg and Oh already proved their chops back in September, when they co-presented an award at the Emmys and nailed their scripted banter — a moment that landed on our list of the broadcast’s highlights. And Samberg is no stranger to hosting award ceremonies: He also emceed the Emmys back in 2015.
The 2019 Golden Globes will air Sunday, Jan. 6, at 8/7c on NBC. Nominations will be announced on Thursday morning.

Footballer manager Harry has been married to her for 50 years and he has often spoken about her in camp. In her first interview, Sandra, 71, said: “Will he be a new man? I doubt he will change. We’ll soon find out when he comes home. “He’s never cleaned the toilet at home or even the sink, so I’m surprised to see him clean the dunny. I doubt he will do it at home but it would be a good idea. And when he did the floss I really couldn’t believe it, the only other time I saw him dance was when we got married.”
She added: “It has been quite hard to watch him, he just doesn’t realise that everybody is hearing him say things and talking about me. It’s quite embarrassing really.
“It’s very flattering after 54 years. Of course it’s still flattering, it’s really nice. I think my favourite moment was the rapping.”
Harry, also 71, shocked viewers when he showed his romantic side and spoke of continually calling Sandra throughout the day and likened his relationship to “winning the lottery”.
During a chat, he said: “Even when I’m out I ring her 10 times a day. She’s my life. I’m a bit scared, getting a bit older. I love her too much, if anything happened it would just kill me.”
Sandra admitted it had been hard not speaking to him. “I miss him terribly,” she said.
“I didn’t realise they take your phone off you in the first week before the show starts, so he rang me to say I can’t speak to you any more. That was hard.”
She arrived at Brisbane airport yesterday with granddaughter Molly and relatives of other contestants ahead of the first eliminations. Liz Edmonds, 49, landed to see husband Noel, 69, with Kirstie Brittain, 23, for boyfriend James McVey, 24, Kate Robbins, 56, for daughter Emily Atack, 28, and Jon Hegerty, brother of Anne Hegerty, 60.
Meanwhile, Liz said Noel and Harry were “like the Chuckle Brothers” – but she has admitted she worries about the state of her husband’s normally immaculate beard and said he had tackled his phobias.
She added: “We’re not surprised people have been voting for him to do the trials because of all the gotchas and the gunging over the years [in his TV shows]. It is kind of payback.”
Redknapp left puzzled in vat of slime hellhole
HARRY Redknapp went head to head with heavyweights John Barrowman and Nick Knowles at a Deadly Dash in the Bushtucker Trial last night.
After being chosen by the public as team captains, the trio was forced to go bobbing for puzzle pieces.
Harry was first to retrieve from a “hellhole” filled with mud crabs before plunging face-first into the next vat of slime and fish guts. But after defeating water dragons and cockroaches, he fell at the final hurdle and was last to complete his six-piece puzzle.
He told Holly Willoughby: “I can’t do puzzles…I’m useless, a bit like a striker who gets in front of the goal and doesn’t score, that was me.”
Nick chose Malique Thompson-Dwyer and Sair Khan to join him on Team Galahs. John picked Anne Hegerty and Emily Atack for Team Koalas, and Fleur East and James McVey joined Harry’s Team Roos.
