To close out its first, albeit unorthodox episode since the coronavirus pandemic put everyone in lockdown mode, Saturday Night Live enlisted cast members past and present for a moving tribute to Hal Willner, an acclaimed music producer who had been with the show since 1980. Willner, who in his work for SNL selected the music used in sketches, died on April 7 at age 64, after being diagnosed with symptoms consistent with those caused by COVID-19. SNL’s tribute, embedded above, was fittingly musical, as numerous cast members (including Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph and Rachel Dratch) sang, from their quarantine homes, Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day,” while some (including Kate McKinnon, Bill Hader, Pete Davidson and Fred Armisen) shared personal remembrances. Outside of SNL, Willner was highly regarded as a producer of tribute projects that brought together eclectic creative personalities, including 1981’s Amarcord Nino Rota and 1995’s September Songs. There was a joyous vibe to Adam Sandler’s star-studded Saturday Night Live homecoming, which featured cameos by Chris Rock, Jimmy Fallon and Kristen Wiig, as well as a tuneful tribute to Chris Farley (as seen above). The third-to-last episode of Season 44 was one of its very best. The writers seriously stepped up their game for the return of one of their most beloved alumni, who seemed genuinely thrilled to be back in Studio 8H — and back behind the Weekend Update desk as Opera Man. And in lieu of having Sandler reprise all of his characters, current castmates paid homage to their predecessor with some of their own impressions in one of the very best sketches of the year. BEST: OPERA MAN
BEST: SANDLER FAMILY REUNION
BEST: LAST CALL
BEST: RECTIX
BEST: ROMANO TOURS
WORST: HOLES
What were your favorite sketches this week? And what missed the mark? Watch all of the highlights above, then grade Sandler’s return to Studio 8H in our poll. Nearly 25 years after being booted from Saturday Night Live, former cast member Adam Sandler returned to Studio 8H with a lot to get off his chest — in song, naturally. Sandler’s musical confession came during his monologue. After acknowledging his wife and kids in the audience, he said that his daughter once asked why he left SNL if it was really the greatest time of his life, as he always told her. The answer, he sang, was simple: “I was fired, I was fired. I was fired, sad to tell. Well I never saw it coming, I got fired from SNL. Between seasons I heard a nasty rumor that I was getting the sack. I tried to call Lorne Michaels, but he never called me back. … I guess NBC had enough of Crazy Spoon Head and the songs I sang on the news. Maybe the were sick of Canteen Boy, but I think they just hate the Jews. I was fired, not rehired, well it made me sad and blue. I told my boy Chris Farley I got fired — and he said, ‘Same, man. They fired my ass, too.’” Sandler was then joined by fellow former cast member Chris Rock, who also spun a sad tale of woe from his SNL days: “I got fired, I was fired, I was fired by NBC. Then I went on In Living Color. Three weeks later, they took it off TV.” Current cast member Pete Davidson was the next to take the stage, though Sandler was quick to explain that he hasn’t been fired yet. “I wasn’t?” Davidson replied. “How that’s even possible.” “I don’t know,” Sandler told him. “But be patient. It’s coming soon.” He then returned to his solo act: “Well, it broke my heart to pieces, cause SNL was my home. Where could I do my silly voices now? I never felt so alone. … Yeah, I was fired. I was fired. NBC said that I was done. Then I made over $ 4 billion at the box office, so I guess you could say I won.” Then came the big finish: “So I was fired, but tonight I’m rehired, and I’m the happiest man alive. Cause it feels so good to be back with you here tonight where it all began for me, right here on Saturday Night Live.” Hit PLAY on the video above to watch Sandler’s musical monologue, then drop a comment with your thoughts below.

Sandler hit all the right notes as he reprised this fan-favorite character and sang about “hands-on” presidential hopeful Joe Biden (“Gropa gropa, sniffa sniffa”), Attorney General William Barr (“Where did Barr go? He did not show. Check every single Wendy’s!”) and President Trump’s relationship with Russian prez Vladimir Putin (“I get to make-a the wall, and Putin make me his beetch!”).
Fallon, who’s long been known to do a killer Sandler impression, was one of the many attendees at the aforementioned gathering. This instant classic skit also featured a surprise cameo by Wiig as Sandler’s Carrie-inspired mother, musical guest Shawn Mendes as Billy Madison, and Pete Davidson as Little Nicky.
Wiig stuck around long enough to play one-half of a polyamorous polycystic couple looking to spice things up in the bedroom. But first, she enjoyed a plate of trash spaghetti — Lady in the Tramp-style — with Kate McKinnon’s Sheila Sovage.
This especially perverse erectile dysfunction ad featured an unusually large alternative to “the little blue pill” which… wasn’t actually a pill at all. Even funnier than the graphic when the rectal remedy was inserted were Beck Bennett’s reactions as his parents explained how Rectix has improved their sex lives.
Sandler’s spokesman went into great detail about his award-winning vacation packages before emphasizing what a trip to Italy can’t do for you: “If you are sad where you are, and then you get on a plane to Italy, you in Italy will be the same, sad you from before, just in a new place,” he clarified. “We can provide you with a wine-tasting tour of Tuscany, but we cannot change why you drink, or the person you become you do.”
The night’s one true dud came in the form of this forgettable music video where Sandler, Bennett and Kyle Mooney sang about… the holes in our clothes? (It’s best not to overthink it.) Make no mistake, this one bombed. There was not a single audible laugh from the studio audience.

In case you didn’t hear, Adam Sandler has an original comedy special on Netflix, and unlike most of the movies he’s released over the past couple decades, it’s actually a return to hilarious form for the comedian who got his start doing goofy songs and silly characters on Saturday Night Live. Along with the funny storytelling and roster of all-new original song, there’s one particular moment that you might be surprised to have pull at your heartstrings.
Adam Sandler’s 100% Fresh comedy special features a tribute to the late, great comedian Chris Farley, who has now been gone for 21 years. Sandler sings a simultaneously funny and heart-warming song about the Tommy Boy star, the various characters he played on Saturday Night Live, the profound effect he had on everyone who came into contact with him, and the tragic day when he left us all too soon.
If you would have told me that Adam Sandler’s comedy special in 2018 would genuinely bring tears to my eyes, I would have said you were crazy. But here we are, and this is one of the most touching moments of the year in pop culture. You can tell Sandler really loved Chris Farley, as did all of his friends, and knowing the tragic fate that he met by living life too fast only makes it that much harder. But at least he gave us years of laughter and still inspires new generations of comedians to this day, hopefully with a bit of caution too.
Trust me when I say Adam Sandler’s comedy special will be one of the most pleasant surprises of 2018 if you give it a shot. It’s available to watch on Netflix right now, so maybe watch it with the older members of your family over the holidays.

For the past decade, Adam Sandler has made a name for himself as a goofball movie star who makes movies solely for the purpose of earning him a trip to Hawaii. But every now and then, we get reminded — hey, this guy is actually a great actor.
After giving a quietly stunning performance in last year’s The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected), Sandler may be ready for a new creative comeback. Sandler is reportedly being eyed by the Safdie brothers for their follow-up film to Good Time. That’s right, an Adam Sandler Safdie brothers movie may soon be on its way.
Ben and Joshua Safdie have slowly become some of the most exciting, visceral independent directors in Hollywood. And no film demonstrated it better than last year’s brutal, discomfiting crime thriller Good Time, starring Robert Pattinson as a bank robber attempting to get his disabled brother (Ben Safdie) out of prison. It’s an astonishingly pulpy film that marked another turning point in Pattinson’s career from heartthrob to character actor, and heralded the Safdie brothers as the next generation of Hollywood auteurs.
Now, the Safdie brothers could work their magic on another Hollywood actor in need of a career turnaround. Hidden in reports of Sandler and Jennifer Aniston’s lame-sounding Netflix comedy, was a report (via The Playlist) that the Safdie brothers are reportedly eyeing Sandler to star in Uncut Gems, replacing former star Jonah Hill.
This is a hugely exciting prospect for all parties. Uncut Gems is a Martin Scorsese-produced story written by the siblings’ frequent collaborator Ronald Bronstein (Heaven Knows What) about the corrupt diamond district of New York City. It sounds like another grimy crime film for the Safdie brothers, and a huge 180 for Sandler.
Sandler is still in the thick of his historic Netflix deal, churning out one bad broad comedy after another, but one recent role has people thinking that he may be looking for a creative comeback. Yes, I’m talking about Noah Baumbach‘s The Meyerowitz Stories, in which Sandler played Ben Stiller’s bedraggled, resentful brother. It was a revelatory performance that had several critics predicting that Sandler could win an Oscar, though The Meyerowitz Stories ended up being shut out of the awards ceremony altogether.
But Sandler’s not a one-trick pony. Though he’s more known now for Grown-Ups and his countless forgettable Netflix comedies these days, Sandler has proven that he can be a great actor when he wants to be in films like Punch Drunk Love and Funny People.
Now with a career-best performance in The Meyerowitz Stories behind him, could we see the beginning of the Sandler-ssance? We’ll have to wait and see.

After the huge box office splash made by The Wedding Singer in 1998, a winning romcom duo was established.
Normally this would signal a rush of repeats, with Hollywood always keen to cashing in on a successful formula.
It seems like Drew and Adam have made more since then but, in fact, they have only teamed up twice since. Drew became a romcom queen but with various leading men.
The only partnership that sticks in popular memory, though, is with Adam and the good news is the actress just revealed fans can expect another movie on the way.
Drew was appearing on Watch What Happens Live to promote her latest hit show, The Santa Clarita Diet.
The chat show traditinally has a viewer call-in section and the actress answered a question about returning to work with Adam in among talking about her zombie project and responding to a shock question about plans for a sequel to E.T.
Drew said that there is a clear pattern to her movies with Adam.
WATCH THE MOMENT NEXT
Drew said: ” Adam and I have done a movie every 10 years, three decades in a row. You cannot mess with that.”
Actually, there was only a six year gap between the first two. The Wedding Singer (1998) was followed by 50 First Dates (2004) before Blended arrived in 2014.
Hopefully this means the next movie will arrive some time at the start of the 2020s and not in 2024. Both stars currently have projects with Netflix, so hopefully tihs will hurry things along.
Drew seemed to indicate that the pair have already discussed what comes next.
Drew added: “We did The Wedding Singer, Fifty First Dates and Blended, and we will do (another one). We just haven’t figured out what it is yet.”
The E.T. child star is enjoying great success in the Netflix comedy series Santa Clarita Diet on Netflix, while Adam has a looser multi-movie deal with the streaming giant.
His latest film, The Week Of, also stars Chris Rock and will be released on April 27.
Before reuniting with Drew, Adam is rumoured to be returning to another former leading lady next, in an unconfirmed project with Jennifer Aniston.

Several actors are jumping aboard a few high-profile projects, and we’ve rounded them all up for your convenience. Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston are teaming for a new Netflix movie, Hugh Jackman might join Bad Education from a producer of La La Land, and Avengers co-star Sebastian Stan will team with director Gore Verbinski for Beat the Reaper.
Adam Sandler has already made a slew of films for Netflix, and now he’s getting Jennifer Aniston involved. The Tracking Board reports Sandler and Aniston will star in Netflix’s Murder Mystery, a comedy directed by Anne Fletcher, from a script by James Vanderbilt. Murder Mystery will be a reunion for Sandler and Aniston – they both appeared in the 2011 comedy Just Go With It – a film I didn’t even remember existed until I Googled it. Per The Tracking Board, “Sandler will play a NYC cop who finally takes his wife (Aniston) on a long promised European trip. A chance meeting on the flight gets them invited to an intimate family gathering on the Super Yacht of elderly billionaire Malcolm Quince. When Quince is murdered, they become the prime suspects in a modern day whodunit.”
I’m hesitant to pay attention to any sort of Netflix movie starring Adam Sandler. But then again, The Meyerowitz Stories was a Netflix movie that featured Sandler, and it was fantastic – and Sandler was great in it. Maybe Murder Mystery will turn out okay in the end.
Song-and-dance Wolverine Hugh Jackman has a new project lined-up. Variety reports Jackman is about to board the film Bad Education. Mike Makowsky, who wrote I Think We’re Alone Now, penned the script, and Thoroughbreds director Cory Finley will helm. There are no concrete details about Bad Education, but reports indicate the film is similar to Alexander Payne’s 1999 comedy Election. There was a 2004 Pedro Almodóvar film called Bad Education, but this film is (thankfully) not a remake of that. Fred Berger, who produced La La Land, is set to produce.
I saved the best for last. The Tracking Board broke the news that Sebastian “Bucky” Stan will star in Gore Verbinski’s new film Beat the Reaper. I’m pretty darn excited about this, because for one thing, that title rules – Beat the Reaper! For another, I’m a Gore Verbinski fan and after A Cure for Wellness, I’m willing to watch anything he directs. The film will be adapted from the book by Josh Bazell. Here’s the book’s synopsis:
Dr. Peter Brown is an intern at Manhattan’s worst hospital, with a talent for medicine, a shift from hell, and a past he’d prefer to keep hidden. Whether it’s a blocked circumflex artery or a plan to land a massive malpractice suit, he knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men. Pietro “Bearclaw” Brnwna is a hitman for the mob, with a genius for violence, a well-earned fear of sharks, and an overly close relationship with the Federal Witness Relocation Program. More likely to leave a trail of dead gangsters than a molecule of evidence, he’s the last person you want to see in your hospital room. Nicholas LoBrutto, aka Eddy Squillante, is Dr. Brown’s new patient, with three months to live and a very strange idea: that Peter Brown and Pietro Brnwa might-just might-be the same person…Now, with the mob, the government, and death itself descending on the hospital, Peter has to buy time and do whatever it takes to keep his patients, himself, and his last shot at redemption alive. To get through the next eight hours-and somehow beat the reaper.
Yep, let’s do this. Let’s Beat the Reaper.

Appearing on Jimmy Fallon’s talkshow, Cyrus – who is in residence all week – teamed up with actor and musician Sandler for a heartfelt performance.
With Cyrus on guitar and the pair of them on vocals, they covered Dido’s No Freedom.
Fallon introduced them by saying: “This morning we woke up to the news of another senseless shooting. This time in Las Vegas.
“In the face of tragedies and acts of terror, we need to remember that good still exists in this world.
“We’re here to entertain you tonight, and that’s what we’re going to do.
“Ladies and gentlemen, with help from Adam Sander: Miley Cyrus.”
Cyrus tweeted afterwards: “No Love without Freedom …No Freedom without LOVE. Thank you so much to Adam Sandler for joining me tonight in remembering all those lost.
“and singing lyrics that I believe are so important at this time …. #LandOfTheFree #StopTheViolence #GivePeaceAChance @fallontonight.”
She had also performed her song The Climb, in dedication to those lost and injured.
59 people died when a gunman fired into crowds in Las Vegas late on Sunday night, with more than 500 more injured.
The 64-year-old shooter killed himself, with President Donald Trump branding his act “pure evil”.
Next week brings the release of Adam Sandler‘s latest original movie coming exclusively to Netflix. The film is called Sandy Wexler, and it takes place all the way back in 1994, starring Adam Sandler himself as a goober of a talent agent with a roster of peculiar clients who are from from making it big. But Sandy Wexler’s life changes when he stumbles upon a new face, and more importantly, a new voice.
Sandy Wexler also stars Jennifer Hudson as Courtney Clarke, an aspiring singer who the titular agents takes under his wing and somehow ends up having a fledgling career despite having a complete buffoon for representation. The Netflix original movie is really going for the music side of the movie with at least one original song being produced for the film, and an official Sandy Wexler music video introduces us to the catchy tune. Unfortunately, it’s accompanied by footage from the movie too.
Here’s the Sandy Wexler music video straight from Netflix:
The video has some 1990s flair to it, and the sound actually feels like a blend of the pop music of today and 20 years ago. Helping give the song the right vibe is the fact that it was written and produced by Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, complete with a rap verse from Ma$ e, who gets a little too close to “Courtney Clarke” for Sandy’s comfort.
For those paying attention to the footage in the music video, it pretty much gives away the whole story (though it wasn’t that hard to predict how it was going to go anyway). Besides that, the footage includes shots of all of Adam Sandler’s usual cronies making appearances as Sandy Wexler’s weird clients. You know what, maybe just look away and listen to the song, because it’s not bad for a pop tune.
If you dare, watch the Sandy Wexler trailer released not too long ago right here.
