The president announced the pullout from Syria on Christmas Eve, leaving Turkish forces to “eradicate whatever is left of ISIS” there. Following the announcement, the New York Times reported on Monday that Trump would give the military four months to extricate itself from Syria completely.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Trump denied giving the military a concrete timeline. “I never said fast or slow” he told reporters. “Somebody said four months, but I never said that either,” the president added.

Trump’s abrupt pullout – which was criticized by a raft of current and former officials from both parties – fueled speculation that Kurdish fighters in Syria would be left at the mercy of the Turkish military, with whom some of them have been fighting a low-intensity conflict for  decades. Dozens of Turkish tanks are currently waiting at the country’s southern border, as the country prepares for a major offensive into Syria.

The Pentagon reportedly mulled allowing Kurdish fighters to keep their US-supplied weapons after the pullout, but Trump announced on Wednesday that US forces would remain there to protect the Kurds for some time to come.

“We want to protect the Kurds, but I don’t want to be in Syria forever,” Trump said, adding that the country is “sand and it’s death.”

At the time of Trump’s Christmas announcement, some 2,000 American troops were on the ground in Kurdish-controlled northern Syria.

Despite the vague timeline, some US troops have begun the journey home from Syria. Turkish media reports over the weekend claimed that some 50 US soldiers abandoned a base in the north-east of the country, leaving the 400-square-meter compound completely empty.

Putting an end to the US’ military adventures in the Middle East was a key promise Trump made while on the campaign trail. At Wednesday’s meeting, Trump also touched on his planned withdrawal of some US troops from Afghanistan, where they have been fighting Taliban militants for 17 years.

“It’s the craziest thing I’ve ever seen,” Trump said, adding that the US should pull out and let Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) and the Taliban fight each other. “Why isn’t India there? Pakistan? Russia?” Trump asked. “Why do we have to be?”

  • NASA captured images of this bright blue sand dune on the red planet.
  • The photo was taken in Lyot Crater, known for its patterned ground.
  • The dune has a different composition to dunes nearby, hence its colour.

NASA found an exquisite sand dune on Mars that is literally out of this world, it confirmed in summer 2018.

‘Underwater Chernobyl’: Norway burying Nazi submarine in sand to stem leak of toxic chemicals https://briefnews.eu/underwater-chernobyl-norway-burying-nazi-submarine-in-sand-to-stem-leak-of-toxic-chemicals/ https://briefnews.eu/underwater-chernobyl-norway-burying-nazi-submarine-in-sand-to-stem-leak-of-toxic-chemicals/#respond Fri, 12 Oct 2018 21:22:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/underwater-chernobyl-norway-burying-nazi-submarine-in-sand-to-stem-leak-of-toxic-chemicals/

A Dutch firm has been commissioned by the Norwegian government to bury a sunken Nazi submarine in sand to stop the 1,800 barrels of toxic chemicals onboard from leaking into the sea.

More than 60 years after the 2,400-ton U-boat was torpedoed by the British Navy off the coast of Norway, the vessel continues to leak dangerous mercury from rusted containers resting 500 feet (152 meters) below the surface.

About 4 kilograms (8lbs) of the toxic mental oozes into the water each year, contaminating 30,000 square metres of seabed, high numbers of fish and enforcing a boat and fishing ban in the area about two miles off the coast of Bergen.

Now, a Dutch company Van Oord has been hired to bury the wreck, and 11 acres of the seabed, in 100,000 tons of rubble to stem the leakage. The burial operation, expected to cost up to $ 32 million, will start next year and finish in 2020. Researchers say the technique has been effective in containing about 30 mercury-contaminated sites over the last 20 years.

Previously described as an “underwater Chernobyl” by a spokeswoman for the Norwegian Coastal Administration, the process is not a permanent solution, but simply a delaying tactic for the the 65 tons of metallic mercury that will be leaking into the sea for decades to come. Campaigners reportedly wanted the wreck to be brought ashore but authorities deemed the suggestions to be too risky as the bottles could break up as they were moved.

U-864 was struck in early 1945 as it headed for Japan carrying jet parts, killing all 73 crew members onboard. It was first discovered in March 2003 by by a Royal Norwegian Navy minesweeper after being alerted by local fisherman.

Running rivers in Namibia, far from the sand dunes of the Skeleton Coast https://briefnews.eu/running-rivers-in-namibia-far-from-the-sand-dunes-of-the-skeleton-coast/ https://briefnews.eu/running-rivers-in-namibia-far-from-the-sand-dunes-of-the-skeleton-coast/#respond Sat, 21 Jul 2018 11:31:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/running-rivers-in-namibia-far-from-the-sand-dunes-of-the-skeleton-coast/
Tim Johnson

Tim Johnson

July 20, 2018

While most travelers to Namibia head for the Skeleton Coast and world-highest sand dunes, Tim Johnson takes his chances on a trip along the Zambezi, Okavango, Kwando and Chobe rivers.

All was calm and peaceful—eerily quiet, you could say—before the hippos came for us. Sliding into the soft mud and tall grasses on the right bank of the Kwando River, a semicircle forms quietly, conspiratorially, the heads of these gray beasts lurking just above the water line.

Almost cartoonishly ill-tempered, hippos are huge, and irritable by nature. And these ones, a half-dozen or so in total, snorting and shooting water from their nostrils and yawning—all signs of aggression, according to our guide and boat-driver Higlee—are slowly closing the circle, striding toward us, their mighty, semi-aquatic legs unseen below the murky waters.

Earlier in the trip, right after we launched, someone asked him if a hippo could flip the boat. “Oh yes, they do,” Higlee responded, leaving open a couple of important, unsettling, and rather germane questions, including where, exactly—and how recently?

RELATED: Welcome to Africa’s secret summits

Perhaps spotting the bubbles that I see fairly close off our port side, and almost certainly noting their steady advance, Higlee cranks up the motor and turns us back upriver, the hippos continuing after us, off the stern, one popping his head up above the surface with a sudden whoosh of the water, much closer than any of us had anticipated.

I’m running the rivers in northern Namibia, a southern African nation better known for its world-highest sand dunes and skeletal coasts, traveling along the Caprivi Strip. A strange historical and geographic quirk, the Caprivi is in many ways a hidden corner of the continent, sandwiched between several nations and running deep into the heart of Africa, all the way to the edge of Victoria Falls.

Traveling with Blue Crane Safaris, a Namibian-owned-and-operated tour company, I’m here to trace the four famous rivers—the Zambezi, Okavango, Kwando and Chobe—that run through here, meeting the residents and learning how these waterways sustain life in this part of Africa.

I meet my guide and proceed by jeep to a lodge on the banks of the Zambezi River. Navigated by David Livingstone and running more than 2,500 kilometers, the Zambezi is one of the world’s great rivers; here I’m well above the crash and splendour of Victoria Falls, further inland.

Cruising out on a pontoon boat, the waters are swelled by the rainy season, and my local guide Joseph promises to seek out crocodiles and other toothy animals. “And before us, right here, we have snakes!” he says, and for a moment, I excitedly look over the side of the boat, anticipating a slithering mass before realizing that I haven’t quite gotten used to the accent. He’s actually offered me snacks.

There’s no television or video games or electricity—just solar panels to charge non-smart cell phones—but a local elder tells me that people find better ways to entertain themselves, anyway. “We sit around the fire and tell stories,” he says. “These, they were passed to us by our grandmothers and grandfathers.”

Later, we see villagers from the far side of the river. The Caprivi is a sort of crossroads of Africa, with Botswana and Zambia and Angola all nearby, and near Hakusemble Lodge, on another boat cruise, my local guide Bernard Shakanda notes that, with the closest shop more than 400 kilometers away on their side, Angolans routinely cross the river to shop here in Namibia. Soon we see one, a solitary man paddling a makoro—a dugout canoe—laid low in the water by his purchases, his kids excitedly receiving him (and perhaps a couple new toys) on that far side.

While it’s the first thought on my mind, Shakanda notes that people around here don’t fear the potentially dangerous wildlife. Growing up, he went for tiger fish with hand lines and took care of his father’s cows. His family bathed and washed clothes in the Okavango, and people still gather drinking water here too, boiling it over a fire before using it. “I even swam in the river,” he tells me. “I was not even thinking about the crocodiles.”

But back on the Kwando, hippos are definitely on my mind. With the animals closing in faster than expected, the engine on our boat thrums away and we motor downriver from the threat—only to encounter two elephants nearby, white tusks flashing in the fading light, moments later. “They are fighting for the womans,” says Higlee in imperfect English, explaining that we’re witnessing an alpha male protecting his territory, vanquishing a potential usurper.

We watch as the alpha vanquishes the upstart, the smaller elephant eventually making his way to the water’s edge, just a few meters from where we sit, wide-eyed, in our little tin boat. It’s all a bit amazing, although now, several days into my journey, this kind of thing has become commonplace—heading back to the lodge, the boat happily un-tipped by hippos, it’s just another night on the river.

World running out of sand, making it the black market’s hot commodity https://briefnews.eu/world-running-out-of-sand-making-it-the-black-markets-hot-commodity/ https://briefnews.eu/world-running-out-of-sand-making-it-the-black-markets-hot-commodity/#respond Sun, 17 Jun 2018 06:52:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/world-running-out-of-sand-making-it-the-black-markets-hot-commodity/ A global shortage of sand is prompting black-market gangs to steal large amounts from rivers and beaches. Scientists are warning that the global supply of sand is slipping through our fingers.

Statistics show that worldwide, we go through 50 billion tons of sand every year – twice the amount produced by every river in the world during the same period.

According to writer and journalist Vince Beiser, who wrote a book on the subject, “Sand is the essential ingredient that makes modern life possible. And we are starting to run out.”

Reuters/Navesh Chitrakar

That’s mainly because the number and size of cities is exploding, especially in the developing world, Beiser told Business Insider.

“Every year there are more people on the planet, and every year more of them move to cities. Since 1950, the world’s urban population has ballooned to over 3.9 billion from 746 million,” he said.

The demand for construction aggregates will rise by 5.2 percent annually to 51.7 billion tons in 2019, according to researcher Freedonia Group. Some estimate that sand’s share of the aggregate business is already worth $ 70 billion in annual sales.

Up to 90 percent of the world’s beaches have shrunk by an average of 40 meters since 2008. Popular shores have replenished their dying beaches with even more sand, imported from elsewhere. Up to 70 percent of Southern California’s beaches could be completely eroded by 2100.

China has used more sand in recent years than the United States did throughout the 20th century. In India, sand has become such a hot commodity that it has been taken over by organized crime, which illegally mines and sells it on the black market. The Sand Mafia, India’s strongest criminal organization, employs 75,000 people to dive for sand in rivers. Divers work 12-hour days, diving up to 200 times and making only $ 15 per boatload.

The UN Environmental Program has already suggested better pricing and taxing on sand mining. They also recommended an immediate need to create regulations in all countries, as well as in international waters.

“We’re on track to be a planet of at least nine billion people in the next 20 years. Most of them are going to want to consume resources the way we do in the Western world, and that is just physically impossible,” said Beiser.

An alarming statistic for you: 67% of Southern California beaches? GONE by 2100. All because of sand. Even if you don’t think about the grainy stuff, you use it daily. You’re reading this off something made with sand, looking at it through a screen made with sand, surrounded by buildings made with concrete. I could let you guess what’s in concrete, but I suspect you’re already catching onto a theme here. The following is a transcript of the video.

I’ll try to make this quick since we don’t have a lot of time. The world is running out of sand.

Crazy right? We literally have tons of it on beaches, deserts, and under the ocean, but we’re using it up faster than the planet can make it.

The most colourful beaches in the world – with pink sand and purple sunsets https://briefnews.eu/the-most-colourful-beaches-in-the-world-with-pink-sand-and-purple-sunsets/ https://briefnews.eu/the-most-colourful-beaches-in-the-world-with-pink-sand-and-purple-sunsets/#respond Tue, 03 Apr 2018 22:52:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-most-colourful-beaches-in-the-world-with-pink-sand-and-purple-sunsets/

Some of the most colourful beaches around the world have been revealed as the beautiful pictures are captured by lastminute.com.

The holiday provider has rounded up some of the most unusual holiday destinations that boast a symphony of colours.

From glittering waters to violet sunset, where are the more colourful beaches found in the world?

Pink Beach, Harbour Island, Bahamas

The distinctive pink sands of Pink Beach make it one of the most unique and picturesque locations in the world.

Found on the Eastern side of the island, the colour is created from the microscopic coral insects which have a light pink shell.

Mudhoo, Vaadhoo and Rangali, Maldives

Often seen as one of the most beautiful destinations in the world and frequented by honeymooners, the Maldives is home to a beautiful natural event.

A chemical reaction between phytoplankton in the water and the sea means the water appears to glitter as they glow a deep blue.

Visiting the shores after sunset guarantees a look at the mystical sight.

Puerto Naos, La Palma, Spain

Forget white sandy beaches and head to Spain for a jet black sand beach.

Found on the Canary Islands, the 600-metre beach features the dark sands thanks to the volcanic origin of the island.

Punaluu Black Sand Beach, Hawaii, USA

Nestled amongst volcanos, the bright red sand of Punaluu Black Sand Beach makes for a different beach experience.

The surreal blue sea contrasts against the red rock cliffs, which supplies the beach with the rich coloured sands.

Pfeiffer Beach, California, USA

It isn’t just multicoloured sands to make some of the destinations some of the most colourful.

A sunset at Pfeiffer Beach in California lights up the skies in rich violets and pinks which bounce off the crystals and appear to light up.

Even better, the beach has an element of privacy due to not being signposted on Highway 1, making it an untouched secret.

Whitehaven Beach, Australia

Made of up 99 per cent quartz, the white sand is found next to the green hills and clear blue waters of the Great Barrier Reef.

Shell Beach, Australia

Another beautiful beach found in Australia is home to one of only two shell beaches in the world.

Found in the UNESCO World Heritage Shark Bay, the small shells reflect the sun and appear to shine bright white.

Ramla Bay, Malta

Despite other beaches showing off white, black, pink and white sand, Ramla Bay in Malta has another colour of its own with its deep gold sand.

Of Mice & Sand: Revised Brings A Desert Journey And Shelter Management To PC https://briefnews.eu/of-mice-sand-revised-brings-a-desert-journey-and-shelter-management-to-pc/ https://briefnews.eu/of-mice-sand-revised-brings-a-desert-journey-and-shelter-management-to-pc/#respond Thu, 29 Mar 2018 07:15:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/of-mice-sand-revised-brings-a-desert-journey-and-shelter-management-to-pc/ mice.jpg

The desert is a ruthless landscape, a sandy expanse littered with the wastes of abandoned architecture. But in Of Mice & Sand: Revised, an expanded version of a 2017 3DS release, you have the means to cross, with your tiny crew and sprawling home on wheels. Managing them effectively is a different story though.

To face the looming wasteland of an alien planet, Of Mice & Sand starts you off with a small mobile home, with beds and workshops for your meager crew. But as the rodents travel the dunes, encounter other inhabitants, gather resources and riches, your craft grows larger and more sprawling, from a big rig to an entire town on treads, complete with gunsmiths and bars and other luxuries. You’ll need to keep growing your vehicle and crew to survive the more aggressive threats roaming the desert, and survive the draining stretches of uninhabitable sand.

Managing food and fuel is paramount, as is accepting quests from the folks encountered in towns and outposts along the way. Bounty, rumors from saloons, and other tidbits about the world flesh out this blend of apocalyptic western and rodent world, complimenting the management and strategy side of the gameplay.

Of Mice & Sand: Revised is now available for $ 9.99 on Steam and Switch, and is releasing soon on PS4. You can visit the game’s site for more details.

NZ revelers build sand island to defy alcohol ban, authorities admire their ingenuity https://briefnews.eu/nz-revelers-build-sand-island-to-defy-alcohol-ban-authorities-admire-their-ingenuity/ https://briefnews.eu/nz-revelers-build-sand-island-to-defy-alcohol-ban-authorities-admire-their-ingenuity/#respond Mon, 01 Jan 2018 22:04:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nz-revelers-build-sand-island-to-defy-alcohol-ban-authorities-admire-their-ingenuity/

A group of New Year holidaymakers in New Zealand built a sand island in a bid to defy a local liquor ban, local media reports. The authorities turned out to be quite relaxed about it, too,

It is illegal to consume alcohol on beaches or in other public places in the Coromandel area during the New Year period.

In an effort to beat the booze ban, an enterprising group of friends constructed a sand fort that included a wooden picnic table and a chilly bin. They reportedly claimed the ban did not apply to them because they were in “international waters.”

They continued drinking and watched the fireworks from the comfort of their sand island.

A picture of the friends enjoying their think-outside-the-box solution was posted on the local ChitChat! Facebook page.

In the spirit of the holidays, the local authorities turned out to be really chill about the whole situation.

“That’s the one thing I absolutely love about the Coromandel: the inventive nature of the people. It’s about creativity, the legal reality is somewhat different,” the Coromandel mayor said, as cited by the Stuff.nz news portal.

The local police said they were not aware of the sandcastle drinkers, but Inspector John Kelly echoed the mayor’s admiration for their creative thinking. “If I had known that, I probably would have joined them,” he said.

It is forbidden for the New Year revelers in Coromandel to drink alcohol in public, and the fine for breaching this law could amount to US$ 180. Police can also search vehicles in the area without notice, as the terms of the ban have been made clear on signage.
