The author made the announcement on his blog and has since been responding to fan questions in the comments section. While some sample chapter have been released before, he’s not going to do anymore for The Winds of Winter. He wrote: “I think I have probably released too many sample chapters already. “Put them all together, and what, there are probably more than a hundred pages (I honestly don’t know, I have never tried the exercise).” Martin continued: “In the past, I have always been happy to release sample chapters, and to read other chapters at cons. “But in this age of the internet, no good deed goes unpunished. “That was brought home to me when the Dozois anthology Book of Swords was released, and I found myself reading reviews that slammed Sons of the Dragon as “old, retread” material because I’d read the story at a couple cons… for the entertainment of the few hundred people in the audience. “But of course summaries went up all over the web, and somehow in the minds of some what should have been a brand new reading experience became old and familiar. “It’s not worth it putting up sample chapters and giving readings if it means it will come back and bite me in the ass when the book is finally published.” Nevertheless fans do have a Martin book to look forward to this year in Fire and Blood: A History of the Targaryen Kings from Aegon the Conqueror to Aegon III. Set 300 years before A Game of Thrones, the author describes what is just volume one of a two part history as his “GRRMarillion… my version of Tolkien’s mammoth history of Middle Earth.” Fire and Blood is released on November 20, 2018. The doping violation committed by Russian curler Alexander Krushelnitsky has been confirmed by the Russian Olympic Committee website, which announced on Tuesday that his B sample revealed the presence of a banned substance. Krushelnitsky and his wife Anastasia Bryzgalova, who secured Russia’s first ever Olympic medal in curling, last week, are now set to be stripped of the bronzes they won in the mixed doubles. DETAILS TO FOLLOW Throw in visits to some of the city’s best restaurants and our taste buds were tingling. We flew from Heathrow with British Airways and, although the plane could do with an upgrade, we were really impressed with the cabin crew service, allowing us plenty of time to relax. On arrival in Chicago we headed for the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel, where we were wowed by the curved balconies that make it look like the exterior is rippling in the wind. The interior is just as impressive, with huge modern rooms and beds so big you need a map to find your way out of them. Its third-floor pool and gardens, complete with a 360-degree running track, offer great views and its Italian-themed Filini restaurant is as stylish as the clientele. Heading out on our first night, we were jolted out of our jetlag by a couple of drinks at the lively bars on the Chicago riverfront, then dinner at the brilliantly named Duck Duck Goat, a Chinese restaurant in the up-and-coming Fulton Market area. Delicious dishes such as beef and broccoli and grilled shrimp were served in generous portions and even early on a midweek night the place was really buzzing. We’d been to Chicago before but the Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise is always a must-do, so the next morning we boarded the First Lady for a narrated tour that serves as a refresher about the city’s history and impressive skyscrapers. After that it was lunch at the Gold Coast branch of Lou Malnati’s, Chicago’s legendary pizza chain where the signature deep dish creation is as hearty as the chocolate chip cookie dessert. The food festival wasn’t for another two days so that gave us plenty of time to take advantage of the CityPASS vouchers, fast-tracking us into attractions like the world-class Art Institute of Chicago and to the top of the Skydeck Chicago (famed for its pop-out glass booths that are a no-no for someone like myself who is scared of heights). The pass also included entry to 360 Chicago, which has the better views and is in the Magnificent Mile shopping district, so you can combine a visit with some retail therapy. As impressive in its architecture as New York but roomier and more relaxed, Chicago is a very walkable city, but it’s fun to hop a ride on an “L” train (the elevated transport system) or the Big Bus Tours hop-on/hop-off service to explore its many diverse neighbourhoods. The River North area is especially vibrant and it was here we headed to RPM Steak, where the décor is sophisticated, the service impeccable and the dry-aged Kansas City Cut steak is beyond incredible – big enough to share – while the key lime tart is a dessert to die for. Still full from lunch, we only managed to sample a couple of the many dishes at the Hamburger Hop – Gourmet Chicago’s launch event in the city’s famed Millennium Park. The next day we were back at the park for the main event and it turned out to be quite something, with more than 60 stalls plying visitors with fine wines, tasting menus and cocktails alongside cooking demonstrations and drinks seminars. The $ 185 (£137) per day entry fee might sound steep, but everything is included and having the spectacular Chicago skyline as a backdrop makes it a really special event. There’s only so much fine wining and dining a body can handle so, after a second day at the festival, we were ready for home. We headed to the airport fully satiated, vowing that next time we’ll bring a bigger doggy bag. For more about Chicago and Chicago Gourmet, visit choosechicago.com and chicagogourmet.org. China has been quietly collecting biometric data from millions of people in Xinjiang, according to a new report from Human Rights Watch (HRW). Since February, authorities have been gathering DNA samples, fingerprints and eye scans of those in the region, which apart from Tibet is the only region where ethnic Han Chinese are not in the majority. The government imposes tighter surveillance controls here than anywhere else in the country.
According to the Xinjiang government website, the data — taken from everyone between the age of 12 and 65 — will be linked to household registration cards (hukou), which already limits residents’ access to healthcare, housing and education. The government document states that “regulating the management of identification cards is the foundation to creating a basic population database, based on one’s ID numbers, for the autonomous region”.
However, HRW claims compulsory biodata collection has “particularly abusive potential” and “hardly seems justifiable as a security measure” considering the extensive controls already implemented in the Xinjiang region. According to Sophie Richardson, China director for HRW, “Chinese authorities seem to think they can achieve ‘social stability’ by placing people under a microscope, but these abusive programs are more likely to deepen hostility towards the government”.
China, which has pushed biometric data collection for years, isn’t the first country to implement such a scheme. In 2009, India set up a “voluntary” scheme, Aadhaar, which was billed as a way to streamline benefit payments and reduce fraud, but in recent times has become mandatory for carrying out basic financial business such as opening bank accounts and even making payments over a certain amount.
Critics of the scheme say Aadhaar gives the government unacceptable powers of surveillance, and following several data breaches, also puts citizen’s privacy at risk. However, a landmark judgement earlier this year ruled that Indian citizens have a fundamental right to privacy. It’s very unlikely that authorities in China, with its zero-tolerance approach to anything that could upset government control, would pass the same judgement.

Ordering wine can be intimidating. It’s a complex drink with a lot of history, and there are certain rules surrounding it that shouldn’t be broken, particularly when it comes to ordering it at a restaurant.
While attending Wine Riot, an event that aims to take the pretentiousness out of wine culture, I chatted with sommelier Jason Tesauro, who’s also known as The Modern Gentleman.
I had so many questions: when the waiter pours a sample into your glass, are you supposed to sip it? If you don’t like it, can you ask to return it? And, luckily, Tesauro had the answers.
Sarah Jacobs
Don’t get intimidated or confused by this move — the waiter is simply making sure they didn’t make a mistake.
“They are coming over with the contract. [They’re asking] ‘Is this what you ordered?'” Tesauro said.

If you want to look like an expert and have a proper glass of wine, check the temperature of the bottle with the palm of your hand.
“The first thing I do is put my hand on the bottle and feel it. Are my red wines too warm? Are my white wines too cold?” Tesauro said.
Light-white wines, rosés, and sparkling wines should be served at around 40° to 60° Fahrenheit. More full-bodied white wines and light reds should be around 50° to 60° Fahrenheit, and darker, full-bodied reds should be 60° to 65° Fahrenheit.
If the temperature feels off, Tesauro suggests asking your waiter to either ice a too-warm red or leave out a too-cold white.

When the waiter pours you a sample before serving the whole table, it’s not a taste test.
Tesauro explains: “They are not asking you whether or not you like the wine. They’re asking you whether the wine has survived. Did the wine make it from the vineyard, to the importer’s containership, to the distributor, to our cellar, to your glass correctly?”
“When they pour the wine, all you need to do is swirl it, look at it, and smell it,” he said.
General rule of thumb: if it smells fruity and fresh — not musty, or like vinegar — the bottle is fine, and you should not return it.
By not sipping the sample, you’re also taking your first drink with the rest of the table — after a toast, of course.

Every new electric-car announcement is touted as another nail in the coffin of the internal-combustion engine. But the internal-combustion engine keeps fighting back. The latest counterpunch comes by way of the new 2019 Infiniti QX50, expected to hit the market in early 2018. It will be powered by a technically fascinating engine that promises to improve its fuel efficiency by about 10 to 15 percent compared with the best of its competitors, while also delivering better performance. Road surfaces inevitably break down and need to be repaved. That’s true of any road, be it a city street, interstate or even a race track. Cars and trucks barreling around the same piece of pavement for miles and miles and miles take their toll. In the 108-year history, the track surface has changed and been redone so many times that this core sample tweeted out by the speedway stands more than 18 inches tall. Have a look at all the changes through the years.
Did you see the core sample @jdouglas4 shared last week?

While Indy may be known as the Brickyard, the very first iteration of the track surface in the spring and summer of 1909 consisted of a 2-inch-thick layer of creek gravel, a 2-inch layer of crushed limestone and a layer of taroid. That was followed by a half-inch layer of stone chips mixed with larger stones. That was topped with another layer of taroid (a coal-tar preparation) with stone dust worked into the surface.
In the fall 1909, a two-inch layer of sand was put down, then 3.2 million road-paving bricks were placed. There was roughly a quarter of an inch between each brick. After the surface was leveled, a concrete was poured between the bricks to hold things in place.
That brick surface lasted more than 50 years. In 1961, nearly the entire track surface was covered with asphalt, leaving just a three-foot strip of bricks at the start/finish line. That strip remains there to this day. In 1976, the entire track was cleared and resurfaced for the first time since 1909. Further track work took place in 1988, 1995, 2002 and 2004 — the core sample reflects eight layers in all, but of course doesn’t reflect material that was removed. The last round of work included the pit and warm-up lanes, too.

The bizarre interpolation comes in Swift’s Look What You Made Me Do – which came out last night.
Fred Fairbrass, Richard Fairbrass and Rob Manzoli are credited alongside Swift and Jack Antonoff on the track, destined to become a global No1.
Taking to Twitter, the group praised the unlikely move.
“Thank you @taylorswift13 [love heart],” they wrote. “What a marvellous reinvention!”
Swift’s sixth album Reputation is out in November, and this track is its first single.
Rumours are abound that she could perform it at the MTV VMAs on Sunday; which would be particularly notable given that her rival Katy Perry is hosting.
Perry has been touted as a potential target of Look What You Made Me Do’s lyrics, but many have argued that Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West are more likely targets.
Swift fell out with the married couple last year over West’s song ‘Famous’.
Right Said Fred, meanwhile, released their latest opus Exactly in February of this year.
I’m Too Sexy was released in July 1991 and hit No2 in the UK, and No1 in the US.
It briefly resurfaced in 2007, when it peaked at No56 in the UK.
OZY Fest 2017, which takes place on July 22 in Central Park, will be a feast in many forms. We’re talking mental nourishment from the likes of Katie Couric and Malcolm Gladwell and satisfying sustenance with chef Eddie Huang. But OZY Fest is also about the music or, as we like to call it, soul food. For a sampling of the tasty sounds on offer at this year’s fest, feed your ears with these five artists:
Her vocals will cover your cochleas like satin and transport you to instant zen as you float among lush beats. But don’t think for a second she’s soft. The Malaysian-born, Los Angeles-based singer’s lyrics make nudges like, “Know you didn’t think that I could be this cruel / I don’t need to be mean, but I’m just gonna ignore you.” Yuna’s musical journey, which started 10 years ago in her bedroom, has taken her from Myspace playlists to collaborations with Usher, Jhené Aiko and Tokimonsta. The collabs don’t just take place in the studio, though — scarves are another focal point of her talent. In fact, she dropped a line last fall.
Known for his infectious vocals — like that infamous tag you can’t help but sing — Jason Derulo’s energy is contagious. In an era when live instrumental hooks rule the hip-hop industry, let it be known that “Wiggle,” his 2014 ballad to the backside, sampled the recorder before the Migos knew where Portland was. While his songs dance across both sweet and dirty talk, Derulo isn’t worried if you don’t speak the same language, because, according to him, “Your booty don’t need explaining.” When he’s not posing shirtless for a cover shoot, the 27-year-old is busy burning up the charts with singles. His most recent, “Swalla,” features Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ ign.
While the “So Good” singer may have seen only 19 trips around the sun, she’s hardly a novice. After winning Sweden’s version of Britain’s Got Talent at age 10, Larsson climbed the charts to become the princess of Scandi-pop. Her 2017 debut album has already racked up six singles, and collabs have her kicking it with Clean Bandit and Ty Dolla $ ign. If sound were a drink, Larsson’s would be rosé: sweet, indulgent and pairs well with summer.
With influences ranging from Lauryn Hill to the Mulan soundtrack to the Afrikan school in which he was raised, Kamau’s crunchy beatbox gibberish cascades across rich drum patterns. To see him perform is to be engulfed by crisp syntax, roaring beats and vocal throws. The Brooklyn artist works frequently with No Wyld and Lion Babe, and he can be heard on Issa Rae’s Insecure. If his Twitter hints prove true, fans can expect a new album, TheKAMAU-CASSETTE: ŭRTH GōLD, to drop soon.
The OG of the lineup, Talib Kweli has been dropping knowledge for more than 20 years. Often a face of the “conscious rap” scene, the New York native is known for creating music that breathes social and political truths. Kweli has worked with everyone from Kanye West and Mary J. Blige to Lupe Fiasco and Pharrell Williams. And although it’s been two decades since he first started spitting, he’s not done yet. In fact, in today’s electronic-influenced hip-hop climate, Kweli’s intricate, authentic lyrics might just provide you with the escape from reality you need.

PRESS RELEASE:
Grand Challenges grant, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, seeks a novel sample preparation technology to become a “universal method” for Low and Middle Income Countries
FREDERICK, Md.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–June 6, 2017–
Akonni Biosystems, a molecular diagnostics (MDx) company that develops, manufactures, and intends to market advanced MDx systems, today announced it was chosen as one of the recipients for a Grand Challenges grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The grant highlights the current unmet need for an affordable, effective sample preparation technology that can serve as a reliable front-end for nucleic acid purification from a variety of targets and sample types. This award reinforces Akonni’s position as a major contender in the $ 1 billion global sample preparation market – a critical component of Akonni’s corporate objectives – and complements another recently awarded NIH contract for sample preparation.
Under the grant, the Gates Foundation will evaluate the suitability of Akonni’s proprietary TruTip low-cost sample preparation technology to meet the needs for adoption in resource-poor settings (e.g. efficiency, ease of use and affordability). To do so, Akonni has been tasked with demonstrating the effectiveness of their technology by isolating DNA/RNA from a panel of blinded samples (containing bacteria and/or virus) prepared by PATH, an international nonprofit and leader in global health innovation. The resulting DNA/RNA will be evaluated by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reference laboratory. The grant will fund the TruTip nucleic acid extraction of the blinded samples in three panels (blood, sputum, and stool). Akonni will have approximately two weeks to complete the extractions and send the extracted nucleic acid to the US CDC reference laboratory.
“We are very excited for this opportunity to work with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation,” said Michael Reinemann, Director of Business Development for Akonni. “Akonni has spent several years and millions of dollars advancing the product development of our proprietary sample preparation technologies, and developing effective procedures for a wide range of relevant targets and sample types. We now have robust data that demonstrates excellent performance, even in the most challenging sample types like blood, sputum and stool, with a universal approach that is low-cost and very easy to use.” Akonni hopes that this challenge grant will result in further collaboration with the Gates foundation, allowing continued advancement and wider distribution of its effective and affordable solutions for sample preparation.
