They are two of the most iconic franchises in modern popular culture. In 2018 both Star Wars and Doctor Who encountered major fan backlashes. Jodi Whitacker’s ground-breaking first season as the Gallifrey globe and universe-trotter wraps up this evening on BBC 1 in a series that has seen falling viewer numbers and rumblings of discontent. Star Wars Episode 8 also faced a major backlash on social media and threats of a franchise-wide boycott. Extremists with racist and misogynistic views have been grouped with the frustrated majority who feel the latest incarnations of their beloved franchises have lost sight of their core.  Documentary maker Marc John is currently making Episode Backlash, a film about the Star Wars situation with contributions from fans, and now he is asking the same questions of Doctor Who fans.

Marc told Express Online: “Some Whovians have already been critical of showrunner Chris Chibnall’s storytelling choices, calling out a perceived obsession with political correctness. 

“Are there any ‘Whovians’ who feel that a similarly perceived political hijacking has occurred within their own beloved sci-fi mythology too? It’s open knowledge that the ratings for Doctor Who dropped dramatically over the course of Series 11, from around 10million viewers at the start of the series to a little over 6million at its close a few weeks ago.

“The gulf of opinion on Rotten Tomatoes between mainstream critics (94%) and ordinary fans (26%) is staggering. Doctor Who returns on New Year’s Day for a special episode titled Resolution. The fan reaction to it will be interesting.”

 

“What reactions have they encountered from cast members and the mainstream media generally in the wake of speaking up? Are we beginning to see a near identical debate to what’s happening with Star Wars?

“More worryingly, have we started to see a shift in the cultural landscape where some quarters are seeking to stamp out diversity of thought and freedom of expression altogether? Episode Backlash is not a film about Doctor Who. But to add perspective from neutral sources, Whovians will also be asked what they think about the Star Wars fan backlash and how it resembles their own experience.

“It looks increasingly to me that the Star Wars fan revolt is not just about honouring the mythology, protecting our right to free speech is also at stake.” 

“Unfortunately, we continue to see mainstream news articles bashing fans for expressing valid criticism.

“The latest hostile news piece comes from the American fashion magazine, Esquire, in an article which failed to make any distinction whatsoever between a radical minority of Star Wars fans and the good-natured rebel majority at large. It makes me wonder what the fan bases associated with other sci-fi franchises think about this extraordinary stand-off between negative news reports and Star Wars fans.

“Looking in on the Star Wars fan backlash from the outside, for example, what do Doctor Who fans think about the rebels? Are there any Doctor Who fans who sympathise with the uprising? Or do ‘Whovians’, as they’re known, think that the Star Wars fan uprising is unjustly critical of Johnson and Lucasfilm generally?”

Pride may come before a fall.

Tye Sheridan is riding high right now with the starring role in Steven Spielberg’s latest blockbuster and the next movie in his X-Men franchise coming up. However, Ready Player One has received mixed reviews and Dark Phoenix has just had its releas date pushed back again to next year.

The young star didn’t mince words when he talked up the X-Men movie and carelessly dismissed every other Marvel movie in the process.

Although all the characters across both franchise are from Marvel comics, the X-Men movies are part of 20th Century Fox and do not overlap (yet) with the main Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Sheridan was trying to explain why fans should be excited about Dark Phoenix, which also stars Game of Thrones Brit Sophie Turner, claiming that it will be breaking new ground for a superhero movie.

He told Collider: “Everyone was on the same page with the idea that we were approaching it as much more of a grounded drama versus a superhero movie.

“Something that’s getting old with those universes and all the Marvel movies is that they all look the same and they’re all doing the same thing.”

Fans were quick to respond, tempering their outrage with an effective does of irony.

One said: “Grounded drama? Isn’t this about a lady with superpowers who gets possessed by an intergalactic flaming bird?”

It is also worth noting that the entire Marvel catalogue of 18 films and counting has met with universal fan, critical and box office acclaim (except perhaps Iron Man 2). The entire X-Men movie franchise to date has been uneven, to say the least.

Sheridan added: “We really wanted to shake it up, in that sense, and take a different approach to this.

“Simon Kinberg, who wrote the past three X-Men, directed Dark Phoenix and I’m super, super excited about it. I think it will turn out well and that it will be a different X-Men than we’ve ever seen before, so that’s exciting.”

Sheridan and Sophie Turner’s Dark Phoenix was expected to hit cinemas in November but has been pushed back to February 2019.

His departure comes just one week after to the police drama set in the Caribbean. 

In the second part of a double-bill instalment, which saw the detective travel to London to solve two murders, he handed over the reigns to his replacement DI Jack Mooney (played by Ardal O’Hanlon). 

Viewers watched as Humphrey then reunited with Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton) after he declared his love for her in front of her work colleagues. 

Craving a quieter life in the capital, he agreed to stay in the country and begin a new life with her.

And, while his departure was a heartwarming one, those tuning in at home were sobbing as they said their goodbyes to the detective. 

One viewer tweeted: “#DeathInParadise won’t be the same without Kris Marshall.”

While another added: “Can’t believe it, you cannot top Kris Marshall in that Role, Thursday’s will never be the same again  #deathinparadise.”

“Don’t think I’ll be able to get over #Humphrey leaving for a while those are big shoes to fill #deathinparadise,” a third wrote. 

Someone else continued: “I know Father Dougal will be v good, but @HumphreyGoodman I’m sobbing you’re gone #deathinparadise.”

As the episode came to a close, DI Jack Mooney was seen arriving on the island of Saint-Marie with his new colleagues. 

With two instalments left to go until the end of series six, fans of the show will have the chance to see how he settles into his new role over the next couple of weeks. 

Death In Paradise continues on One on Thursday at 9pm.
