  • Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has gotten into high-profile fights with Disney and Big Tech.
  • It's a model Republicans should follow, he said at a conservative conference near Miami. 
  • "I think that's an absolutely appropriate use of government power," he said. 

AVENTURA, Florida — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has battled large corporation on everything from diversity trainings to environmental, social, and governance investing. He even took on family-favorite Disney by stripping the company of its self-governing status.

It's a surprising approach to business for a Republican who has support from more than 40 billionaire donors, and one that some critics have called heavy-handed and polarizing. Republicans have historically doled out major tax breaks to corporations while eschewing regulations in favor of a more hands-off posture. 

But on Sunday evening in an hourlong speech before the National Conservatism Conference, DeSantis said Republicans' approach and thinking about big business needs to change, arguing that his experiences in Florida provide a "lesson for people on the right." 

"Corporatism is not the same as free enterprise, and I think too many Republicans have viewed limited government to basically mean whatever is best for corporate America is how we want to do the economy," DeSantis said during his keynote speech before a crowd of friendly attendees at the JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort.

"And my view is — obviously free enterprise is the best economic system — but that is a means to an end. It's a means to having a good fulfilling life and a prosperous society. It's not an end in and of itself."

DeSantis has pushed through numerous contentious policies as governor that netted him national headlines and criticisms from the Biden administration. With the attention has come speculation that he may run for president in 2024.

First, however, he has to win reelection in Florida in November. He'll be facing off against former Rep. Charlie Crist, a Democrat who was a Republican governor of Florida from 2007 to 2011.

DeSantis' list of actions against corporations is growing

DeSantis has taken numerous actions against what he refers to as "woke corporations." Most recently, he pushed the State Board of Administration to ban the consideration of "social, political, or ideological interests" — such as ESG — when it decides what investments to make for the state's pension fund. 

The governor also revoked Disney World's self-governing status after the company pleaded with the governor to oppose the Parental Rights in Education Act. The bill limits discussions about gender identity and sexual orientation in a way critics say is too vague and will harm LGBTQ students, parents, and teachers. Critics have dubbed the law the "Don't Say Gay" bill. 

Another law, the "Stop WOKE Act," would limit the way private companies carry out mandatory diversity, equity, and inclusion trainings. Companies that have 15 employees or more could face civil lawsuits if a worker accuses them of violating the law, which says businesses can't implement trainings saying members of a specific ethnic group are inherently racist or that people should feel guilty for actions committed by their predecessors.

And soon after former President Donald Trump left office and was booted off social media platforms for his role in the January 6, 2021m violent attack on the Capitol, DeSantis signed a bill into law to prevent tech companies from censoring political candidates. 

"There's some people that criticize us in Florida because we've taken action to stand up to big tech companies," DeSantis said Sunday evening. "They say you know what, it's private. Let them do what they want to do. First of all, they cannot be viewed as private entities given that we know without a shadow of a doubt they are doing the regime's bidding when it comes to censorship."

But not all his plans are working 

Some of the business laws in Florida are in litigation. The business portion of the "Stop WOKE Act" is being stayed after a judge cited free speech violations. The tech law has been blocked by an appeals court, with Circuit Judge Kevin Newsom writing in the opinion that "the government can't tell a private person or entity what to say or how to say it." 

Other Florida laws have been confusing to navigate. This week, for instance, a Miami school board rejected a measure to observe LGBTQ History month, even though the governor's office said it wouldn't have violated the Parental Rights law. 

But DeSantis doubled down on his actions during Sunday night's speech and predicted his administration would prevail against legal challenges. He accused "corporate America" of having too much power in America and of "exercising quasi-public power in terms of using their economic power to change policy in this country."

"What I'm doing is using government to give space to the individual citizen to be able to participate in society to be able to speak his or her mind," DeSantis said.

"And I think that's an absolutely appropriate use of government power. "

During Tuesday’s episode, Piers Morgan and Matt Hancock became embroiled in a fiery row when the Health Secretary claimed he and his team should be “thanked” for their roles in combatting the coronavirus pandemic. Inevitably, Piers didn’t see things the same way and furiously blasted the MP for being “disingenuous” and “patronising”. However, when Piers discussed the moment with a panel of guests on Wednesday’s Good Morning Britain, Edwina Currie was the one who leapt to Mr Hancock’s defence.

“With all due respect, Piers, if I can come in, he didn’t ask to be thanked personally, he asked for his team to be thanked,” Edwina furiously snapped at Piers after he played the GMB clip again.

“And actually a lot of us are very thankful indeed,” she continued. “18 million people who’ve had their vaccines, including me,

“It’s running at about three million a week. Somebody had to order those jabs, somebody had to pay for them, somebody had to take the decision -“

Piers began to speak over Edwina to try and make his case, but the journalist wasn’t going to let him without a fight as she hit back: “Let me talk.”

However, Piers insisted Mr Hancock wasn’t behind the vaccine feat Edwina had suggested: “That was Kate Bingham, (rather than Mr Hancock).”

The two then clashed as Edwina refused to let Piers jump back into the debate: “Hang on, Edwina, that was a non-Government – you can’t just say that without me coming in and saying that was not Matt Hancock.”

But Edwina felt this supported her point as she barked at Piers: “That’s his team! He asked for his team to be recognised,

“Anf I think indeed it should,” Edwina continued. “I think we should recognise all the efforts gone into all the genomic research, that was funded by the Government.”

“Piers, darling, you are a very responsible person, I agree with about 95 percent of what you say,

“Had you been in charge of PPE back in the Spring of last year, you’d have done exactly the same.

“You would’ve defied all the critic, you’d have failed to have done all the paperwork I’m sure,

“And you would’ve made sure that we got what we could at that time,” she insisted.

The Chancellor was confronted by the BBC Breakfast host over his latest budget announcement as Naga Munchetty claimed the job retention bonus have benefited from a more targeted approach. But Rishi Sunak hit back: “I actually think it will make a significant difference, it is something that people were actually interested in calling for. Given the income distribution of those on furlough, we know that £1,000 can be a significant reward and incentive to employers to successfully bring staff back and continuously employ them.

“I think actually having a broad offer to all those 9 million people is the right thing to do.

“In situations like this and throughout the crisis, I’ve always had a choice between whether to act at speed and at scale, given the severity of what we’re facing, or to do things in a more nuanced and targeted way.

“And in an ideal world, you would do that. But the problem with doing things in a more targeted and nuanced way is it takes a lot longer.

“We don’t have necessarily the luxury of time when you’re dealing with a crisis of this magnitude.

“So I’ve been on the side of a broader approach, I think that is the right thing to do.

“I would make the same decisions again. 

“And I’m sure if we had a more targeted approach in this instance you’d probably have me on this show saying ‘well, why are these people excluded?”‘

The Chancellor said the Government’s support plan is one of the “most comprehensive and generous set of interventions” in the world, but acknowledged some people would still be badly affected.

After outlining the schemes announced on Wednesday, Mr Sunak told BBC Breakfast: “The analysis we published yesterday which shows the totality of what we’ve done demonstrates very clearly that the lowest income households are the ones who have been supported the most by everything we have done but I would acknowledge that this has been a period of extreme hardship for many people and indeed hardship lies ahead.”

Mr Sunak was later asked about self-employed curtain fitter Mark Whittaker, who said he was severely struggling and felt abandoned as he was not eligible for the self-employment support scheme.

Mr Sunak said the scheme had helped 2.5 million people and later added: “If you’re saying to me there are individual people who are suffering hardship as a result of what’s happened then I completely agree and I sympathise with that, it is not possible to ensure that every single person is not impacted by what’s happening.

“We’ve shut our country and economy down for months on end, that is sadly going to have a significant impact and I’ve consistently been honest with people that hardship lies ahead and that’s why we’ve tried to mitigate as much of that hardship as possible.

“Are we going to be able to mitigate all of it for every single person? Of course not, but when I look at the totality of what we’ve done, I do know that it stacks up as being one of the most comprehensive and generous set of interventions out of any country in the world.”

On Wednesday, Mr Sunak announced a sweeping package of measures on Wednesday including giving firms which have furloughed staff a £1,000 bonus to keep workers in jobs.

While warning that “hardship lies ahead”, he insisted no-one will be left “without hope”, as he revealed plans to cut stamp duty, slash VAT on food, accommodation and attractions to 5% and give diners a discount to support pubs and restaurants.

Speaking in the Commons Mr Sunak said his plan would help protect livelihoods after the economy contracted by 25 percent in just two months.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies will give its initial analysis of the summer economic update on Thursday.

Sunday’s launch attempt of a Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, with a primary launch window from 1:32pm ET (18:32 UTC) to 2pm ET (19:00 UTC), is significant for a number of reasons.

For one, this will be the company’s 19th launch of 2018, and if successful, it will break SpaceX’s record for most missions flown in a calendar year. With a handful of launches remaining on its manifest in December, SpaceX is on pace to fly as many as 22 rockets this year. This signifies that SpaceX has solved production and processing issues that prevented it from launching more than eight rockets a year prior to 2017 and that last year was not a fluke.

Chinese President Xi Jinping was in for a full-on welcoming ceremony as he arrived in Argentina for the G20 summit. It seemed to kick off a little early, though – as soon as the honor guard saw a Chinese person exit the plane.

When the plane door opened, and a Chinese official stepped out, a member of the honor guard shouted the formal introduction for President Xi. Salutes were made and music started playing… except it wasn’t Xi – not yet.

The premature ceremony continued until the official made it all the way down the stairs, and for a few seconds after that, and had to be restarted once the actual Chinese president got off the plane.

It might not have gone off without a hitch, but at least Xi got a formal greeting – unlike French President Emmanuel Macron, who had to shake hands with airport staff on his way along the barren red carpet.
