The New Zealand director dedicated well more than a decade to bringing this world to the screen, and he did so with remarkable success in the original trilogy. Although The Hobbit trilogy is less universally beloved, and with good reason, it’s important to acknowledge that there are still some moments of magic in that chapter of Jackson’s saga as well.

The best moments from Jackson’s work get at something elemental about what makes this story so powerful. There are speeches, battles, and everything in between, and while this list does tilt towards his original trilogy, The Hobbit gets a few nods as well.

10. Pippin sings a song

Peter Jackson is often incredibly good at cross-cutting, and one of his best moments of parallel editing comes when Denethor tells Pippin to sing for him. The musical montage that follows shows Denethor eating a feast in truly horrific fashion as he sends his son off to what is likely to be his death.

It’s a moment that highlights Denethor’s cruelty both to his servants and to his children, and it’s also a truly sublime piece of filmmaking. Billy Boyd’s voice will give you chills, as will that moment when the juice from a tomato drizzles down Denethor’s chin.

9. Riddles in the dark

It may seem cheap to say that one of the few moments from The Hobbit trilogy that really stacks up to its predecessor comes when Gollum shows up, but the riddles that pass between Gollum and Bilbo are undeniable. These riddles are evidence of the difference in tone between the two trilogies, but here, Gollum manages to be just as sinister as he was during his worst moments in the original trilogy. Bilbo’s ultimate decision to take the ring and run off is what sets the entire story into motion, but even if it was a less impactful meeting, the writing and performances would still make it worthy of inclusion.

8. Sméagol finds the ring

The opening prologue of The Return of the King is almost like a self-contained horror film. We see Sméagol and his cousin, Déagol, fishing together on a small lake. When Déagol falls into the lake and discovers the ring, Sméagol is quickly ensnared by it and murders his cousin to take possession of it. Then, we’re treated to a horrific montage as Sméagol slowly transforms into the creature we know as Gollum. It’s a horrific preview of what’s in store for Frodo, as well as a reminder that Gollum was once not so different from a hobbit himself.

7. Bilbo meets Smaug

Bilbo & Smaug Complete Scene

The first introduction of Smaug is not just a stunning piece of CGI, it’s also an indication of how central this talking dragon is to the story of The Hobbit. Much like Bilbo’s conversation with Gollum, his interaction with Smaug is defined in part by Bilbo’s ability to talk his way out of deeply frightening situations. The behind-the-scenes footage of Benedict Cumberbatch writhing around is pretty amusing, but it’s hard to deny the effect. Smaug is every bit as terrifying as he should be, even as he displays an intelligence that may surprise some viewers.

6. The lighting of the beacons

A moment that soars on the back of Howard Shore, who puts to music a thrilling montage showing a series of men light beacons to signal that Gondor has called on Rohan for aid shouldn’t be nearly as thrilling as it winds up being. On top of the score, what makes this moment work is the sheer scope of it, as we see beacon after beacon alight, and are reminded that the world of men truly can band together if the egos of kings can be overcome. It also gives us a chance to appreciate the beautiful landscapes of New Zealand, which stand in for Middle-earth throughout the trilogy.

5. Aragorn’s speech at the Black Gate

Aragorn’s Speech At The Black Gate | LOTR – The Return of the King (2003)

Aragorn assembles an army of elves and men with the intent of distracting Sauron so that Frodo and Sam can destroy the ring. It’s a final battle designed as a heroic sacrifice. Our new king’s forces are wildly outnumbered, but he marches into battle anyway. Before he does so, though, he gives one of the more rousing speeches in the entire canon, affirming his belief that the end of men will come, but not today. It’s inspirational and moving, and he closes it in almost a whisper, looking at the people he’s shared this journey with and saying: “for Frodo.”

4. The Battle of Helm’s Deep

Perhaps the greatest battle sequence ever put to film, Jackson stages the Battle of Helm’s Deep with such remarkable clarity that every beat of it seems totally logical. There’s plenty of humor to break up the pacing, including Gimli’s decision to allow Aragorn to toss him into an army of Uruk-hai. Ultimately, what makes Helm’s Deep so impressive though is the sheer scale of it, and the genuine feeling you have roughly two-thirds of the way through that all hope is lost. When Gandalf shows up, no one will blame you for standing up and cheering.

3. You. Shall Not. Pass!

The Lord of the Rings – You Shall Not Pass – (HD)

Gandalf’s death near the end of Fellowship is the first indication for the hobbits that their adventure is going to exact a real cost. The moment works so well because it is both epic and utterly sorrowful. Gandalf gets to utter a few instantly remembered lines in this sequence, but everything about it holds up well, including the more-than-20-year-old CGI. Fellowship is the movie in the trilogy that is the lightest on the action, but when the fighting does break out, it’s some of the best in Peter Jackson’s entire oeuvre.

2. Sméagol talks to himself

Andy Serkis’s performance as Gollum/Sméagol is one of the great wonders of Jackson’s entire run, and Serkis’s skills are never more apparent than when Gollum and Sméagol argue with one another in Two Towers. Through simple editing and angling, we get to see a real conversation play out between the two personalities warring within Gollum, and come to understand how this poor, tortured creature thinks. Sméagol may win this argument, but we know that Gollum will not be gone for long, even though Sméagol tells him to “leave now, and never come back.”

1. Sam talks about hope

LOTR The Two Towers – The Tales That Really Mattered…

Frodo has the hardest job in Lord of the Rings, but Samwise Gamgee is the heart of the entire story. In a single speech near the end of Two Towers, Sam sums up the entire project of Tolkien’s work, describing the better world that he and Frodo left home to fight for. Sam talks about how, in the darkness, it can feel like there’s nothing else to see. Ultimately, though, darkness passes, and the sun shines all the clearer for having disappeared. He urges Frodo to hold onto hope, and we all weep. “There’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo,” Sam says. “And it’s worth fighting for.”

Fate The Winx Saga season 2: Terra star shares hopes for character ‘Doesn’t change’ https://briefnews.eu/fate-the-winx-saga-season-2-terra-star-shares-hopes-for-character-doesnt-change/ https://briefnews.eu/fate-the-winx-saga-season-2-terra-star-shares-hopes-for-character-doesnt-change/#respond Sat, 13 Feb 2021 07:22:22 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/fate-the-winx-saga-season-2-terra-star-shares-hopes-for-character-doesnt-change/

At the end of season one, viewers saw Bloom (played by Abigail Cowen), Stella (Hannah Van der Westhuysen), Musa (Elisha Applebaum) and Aisha (Precious Mustapha) and Terra return to Alfea College after a trip to California to find Rosalind (Lesley Thorp) had taken over as headmistress.

The fairies are yet to find out Farah Dowling (Eve Best) is dead but with Stella’s mother Queen Luna (Kate Fleetwood) showing support to Rosalind, it’s likely they will need all the allies they can find.

On what fans can expect from season two, Eliot said that “Your guess is as good as ours,” since Netflix hasn’t yet officially renewed the show.

For Terra, however, she thinks “it’d be interesting to see the limits of her powers. Terra is quite focused on little flowers and vines at the moment, so any expansion on that would be great.”

Fate The Winx Saga: What is a Changeling? https://briefnews.eu/fate-the-winx-saga-what-is-a-changeling/ https://briefnews.eu/fate-the-winx-saga-what-is-a-changeling/#respond Sat, 23 Jan 2021 06:34:51 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/fate-the-winx-saga-what-is-a-changeling/

WARNING: This story contains spoilers for Fate The Winx Saga

Fate: The Winx Saga is a new teen drama series on Netflix based on the original Winx Club animation. The show includes themes of friendship and each of the fairies has the ability to control the elements. Bloom (played by Abigail Cowen) is called a “Changeling” in the series and fans are wondering what it means.

What is a Changeling?

Fans of the original Winx Club cartoon have been waiting for many years for a live-action adaptation.

The new series has added a dark twist to the story which saw a friendly group of glittering fairies fight off evil.

While the premise of the new series remains similar, the creators have chosen to add plenty of fight or flight moments.

The main protagonist in the series is Bloom and she is a Fairy of the Dragon Flame.

This means she has the ability to control fire and the strength of her powers comes from channeling her emotions.

Bloom and her friends have just started school at Alfea College – a magical teaching establishment in the Otherworld.

As the fairies get settled in they start to discover the quirks and mysteries within the area.

Bloom is called a “Changeling” in the series and fellow fairy Aisha (Precious Mustapha) explained to her what it meant.

A “Changeling” is a fairy baby switched with a human baby at birth – a theory Bloom strongly denies.

Many people wondered if Bloom was adopted as she did not come from a specific bloodline.

There is an understanding Rosalind took Bloom from Aster Dale and swapped her with a human baby born to a Californian family.

Her followers had then destroyed an entire village in Aster Dale to kill the dreaded Burned Ones.

Rosalind has embedded certain memories in Beatrix so she may not be revealing the whole truth.

Eva Birthistle plays Vanessa, Bloom’s adoptive mother who is covered in burn wounds from when Bloom once lost control of her powers.

Before Bloom started school she was blind to what really happened to her parents.

Fans are eagerly awaiting news of a second season so they can find out if Bloom discovers the truth about her past.

One said on Twitter: “Just finished Fate: The Winx Saga on Netflix and let me tell you I’m hooked!

“Don’t judge it on the TV show and just go watch it and make up your mind then. But it’s really so good.”

Cowen took part in an interview with Glamour Magazine about her iconic character and the intensity of her role.

She said: “I found out [about the role] a week or two before I had to fly out so it was a huge shock. I never had a role this big before.

“I think you just have to kind of roll with the punches when you get there and hope for the best.”

IN 2010 GOLDMAN SACHS created a “business standards” committee to try to repair the reputational damage the financial crisis had done. Clients and transactions were to be screened for ethical shortcomings. Charges of money-laundering and bribery filed by federal prosecutors in a Brooklyn court on November 1st suggest that the investment bank had diagnosed a real problem, if not found the solution.

The allegations relate to work done by Goldman for 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), a sovereign-wealth fund set up in 2009, shortly after Najib Razak became Malaysia’s prime minister. Since 2015 investigators in various countries, including America, Singapore, Switzerland and latterly Malaysia itself, have been trying to trace the money it raised and channelled through a maze of financial institutions and shell companies. According to the filing in New York, funds were misappropriated to buy paintings, luxury properties and jewellery (including a necklace costing $ 27m), and to…

Lindsey Graham gets his ‘thug life’ memes in afterglow of Kavanaugh saga https://briefnews.eu/lindsey-graham-gets-his-thug-life-memes-in-afterglow-of-kavanaugh-saga/ https://briefnews.eu/lindsey-graham-gets-his-thug-life-memes-in-afterglow-of-kavanaugh-saga/#respond Sun, 07 Oct 2018 23:08:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lindsey-graham-gets-his-thug-life-memes-in-afterglow-of-kavanaugh-saga/

Sen. Lindsey Graham didn’t mince his words defending Brett Kavanaugh as his Supreme Court nomination was debated, slamming his political opponents and smugly dismissing protesters. So ‘thug life’ memes were called for.

The videos of him interacting with protesters, or rather shrugging off protesters, have gone viral as supporters professed their love to the controversial senator from South Carolina. Some of them revived the ‘thug life’ meme of circa 2015 that glorified a cool self-image and was usually combined with depictions of White suburban stereotypes. Might be appropriate, as Republicans are gloating over the successful end to the roller coaster nomination process.

USA Today adds ‘pedophilia’ angle to Kavanaugh saga, sparks outrage https://briefnews.eu/usa-today-adds-pedophilia-angle-to-kavanaugh-saga-sparks-outrage/ https://briefnews.eu/usa-today-adds-pedophilia-angle-to-kavanaugh-saga-sparks-outrage/#respond Sat, 29 Sep 2018 14:20:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/usa-today-adds-pedophilia-angle-to-kavanaugh-saga-sparks-outrage/ With tensions over SCOTUS nomination at a boiling point, a USA Today article discusses if Brett Kavanaugh should continue coaching girls’ basketball team, bringing into the story recent child sex abuse scandals in US sports.

The article by USA Today’s Erik Brandy has triggered a major backlash among conservatives on social media.

The FBI is now investigating the accusations of Christine Blasey Ford that Kavanaugh assaulted her 36 years ago, after both gave emotional testimonies at the Senate Judiciary Committee that decided to move the Supreme Court nominee vote to the full Senate.

Christine Blasey Ford and Brett Kavanaugh

Kavanaugh denies he is the culprit in the attack on Ford and accuses Democrats of orchestrating the scandal that he says ruined his life. Brandy focuses his vitriolic piece on Kavanugh’s remark during the hearing that he might not be able to coach his daughter’s basketball team again – something that he said he loved more than anything he has done in his life.

The article’s headline “Is Brett Kavanaugh right that he can no longer coach girls basketball?” remains rhetorical throughout and leads to the conclusion that “accused sex offenders should not coach youth basketball, girls or boys, without deeper investigation.”

Brandy brings in references to the case of Larry Nassar, USA Gymnastics team coach who was found guilty of multiple sexual assaults, and after setting this background for the readers expresses his surprise that Kavanaugh can still coach for the Catholic Youth Organization and his daughters’ private school in Washington.

“He has no record and has no criminal background. He’s gone through the (training) process. He can coach,” Edward McFadden, spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Washington is quoted.

Yet Brandy goes on to wonder if he should and brings in the US Center for SafeSport, set up in 2017, to probe sexual misconduct claims while admitting that it has essentially no relation to the issue, as it does not cover youth sports.

The organization’s spokesperson, Dan Hill, says that a credible allegation of sexual misconduct may spark an investigation even with the lack of formal charges. Again, Hill did not refer to Kavanaugh, speaking in general, Brandy concedes, but his remark fits the narrative anyway.

As soon as the US Today article came out, conservative Twitter responded with indignation and outrage.

Some saw the piece as a reflection of partisan brinkmanship, that is getting uglier as the congressional elections inch closer.

The conservative commentators did not mince words, calling the op-ed “disgusting,” “horrifying”, “reprehensible” and “stupid”.

Have the Left have reached the bottom yet? – Mike Cernovich, right-wing political activist and writer asked.

The question will probably also have to remain rhetorical, though.

  • Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley granted Christine Blasey Ford’s attorneys an extension to decide whether she’ll speak to lawmakers about her claim that Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were in high school in the 1980s.
  • Ford’s attorneys sent a letter to the committee on Friday ahead of an initial 10 p.m. ET deadline to ask for more time. The lawyer, Debra Katz, also scolded the senators for displaying what she called a “cavalier” attitude toward a “sexual assault survivor.”
  • After granting the extension, Grassley appeared to fume about it on Twitter, and seemed to apologize to Kavanaugh, who is waiting for the senators to vote on his confirmation to the Supreme Court.

Fresh twist in crazy Bennett saga https://briefnews.eu/fresh-twist-in-crazy-bennett-saga/ https://briefnews.eu/fresh-twist-in-crazy-bennett-saga/#respond Thu, 16 Aug 2018 23:51:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fresh-twist-in-crazy-bennett-saga/ FORMER Souths coach Michael Maguire has responded to reports Brisbane is in “secret talks” with him to take over from Wayne Bennett at Red Hill.

The Courier Mail revealed on Thursday the Broncos have identified Maguire as the man to take over from Bennett, but will allow the 68-year-old to see out his contract through to the end of the 2019 season.

Bennett asked for a one-year extension to take him through to the end of 2020 but that was reportedly denied by club powerbrokers who are in the midst of a power struggle with the seven-time premiership winning coach.

But Maguire, who coached the Rabbitohs to the 2014 premiership, has denied receiving a formal approach from any club about returning to the NRL coaching ranks next season.

Maguire said he had “taken my head out of a lot of the chatter” about the coaching merry-go-round but revealed he was definitely interested in coming back to coach.

“I’m aware that there’s a lot of noise around the coaching but at the moment I have full respect for the coaches who are there and I’m not going to go into too much detail because I don’t have any around the clubs that have obviously been put forward,” Maguire told Macquarie Sports Radio.

“We’ve had no contact so I’m not quite sure where that one has come from. They’re a great club the Broncos and they’re working through some things up there and as I said I’ve got full respect for the coaches that are there so I don’t want to add to anything but no there’s been no contact (from Brisbane).”

Maguire said if he did coach in the NRL again, he would be selective in choosing which club he joined.

“I’ve sat back and learnt a lot from my time at Souths and our time in Wigan and I guess once you’ve been in those positions where you’ve seen a club be extremely successful there’s certain things that need to be in place,” Maguire said. “To be able to go back into a club now with those things I’m keen for and I have seen work to create success, it’s a very important part when you’re picking a club.”

Maguire, who started a new job as the referees’ coach this year, said his role means he is in constant contact with decision makers in clubland and while they’ve sounded out about what his interests are, he reaffirmed no official approaches for his services have been made.

But fuelling speculation Brisbane remains an option, Maguire said moving away from Sydney would not be a problem.

“I do a lot of talk of people in administration and CEOs and people like that so you have conversations where they’re sounding (you) out and wondering what you’re up to,” Maguire said. “So I’ve had conversations like that but other than that it’s just a waiting game now.

“My kids are pretty used to flying about … they’re into me everyday about when I’m going back to coaching so I think they want me out of the house so I think they’re pretty keen for me to get into it wherever it might be.”
