WALDORF, Md.—To a casual observer, Regency Furniture Stadium, home of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball team, probably looked like it was playing host to a weekend autocross. There were cones set up in the empty lot as I pulled in and some interesting cars to park alongside, many displaying the subtle tells of trackday service. But on this unseasonably cold and windswept Sunday morning, something else was afoot. The cones were not arranged in the sinuous, continuous course you might expect if time trials were the order of the day.

A closer look revealed that more was going on here. To one side of the stadium’s parking lot, a cone sat alone in the middle of a wide expanse of tarmac. Elsewhere, others were clustered together to delineate other obstacles to negotiate—a slalom course and so on. And while a handful of the cars up front obviously belonged to enthusiasts, the vast majority were much more… suburban. That’s because I was actually here to visit a local event being held by the Tire Rack Street Survival school. It’s just one of a number of events that take place across the country with the goal of instilling good driving habits in impressionable young minds.

You don’t have to squint to see the need for programs like these. More than 37,000 people die on US roads each year, and drivers under the age of 25 are well represented in the annual tabulations. But the data is more complicated than that, and road deaths among young drivers have actually been on the decrease compared to a 29-percent year-on-year increase in fatal crashes involving drivers over the age of 65. Getting our elderly drivers to go to a car-control clinic would probably be a brilliant idea, too, but it’s easier to get ’em while they’re young, particularly if you’re the responsible adult who provides the vehicle, insurance, and gas money. Hence the collection of parents giving up their Sunday mornings (and paying $ 95) to spend time with their teen drivers and some cones.

Looking to modernize voting practices, speed waiting times at the polls, increase voter turnout and generally make voting more convenient, many government officials – and some companies hawking voting systems – are looking to an emerging technology called a “blockchain.” That’s what’s behind a West Virginia program in which some voters serving abroad in the military will be able to cast their votes from their mobile devices. Similar voting schemes have been tried elsewhere in various places around the world.

As researchers in the Initiative for CryptoCurrencies and Contracts, we believe in the transformative potential of blockchain systems in a number of industries. Best known as the technology behind bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, blockchains can do much more than allow anonymous strangers to send each other money without fear of fraud or tampering. They have created new ways for people to invest in technology ventures that have attracted billions of dollars, and may someday store records that make educational credentials, land ownership and food origins more transparent and harder to forge.

French wineries have to use a lot of pesticide to keep their grapes healthy, and that’s both expensive and costly — a problem when some countries don’t have those problems. The country might just have a solution, though. Researchers at France’s Institute of Agronomical Research (INRA) recently received permission to grow four grape varieties that are genetically resistant to mildew rot, eliminating much of the need for pesticides. Where a winery typically needs to spray pesticides about 15 times a year, the INRA varieties may only need one or two.

The grapes weren’t genetically modified. Rather, the researchers identified rot-resistant genes in other grapes (including those from Asia and the US) and cross-bred them to promote the improved traits. They also made sure to get rid of variants that were overly acidic or produced unwanted scents.

You probably won’t be rushing to order a crate of this toughened-up wine when it’s bottled by 2020. At the moment, the quality of test batches is… mediocre. Hybridization may have reduced pesticide use, but it also took the edges off the taste. It may take years for the grapes to evolve into something more flavorful. Don’t be shocked if you see more of this going forward, however. Reducing pesticide use could both lower the cost of producing wines and reduce the use of harmful chemicals. It might be worth passing on some less-than-ideal vintages if winemaking becomes that much more accessible and eco-friendly.

New cars are safer than old cars. Yeah, we know. Obviously. But the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration just released a report highlighting the added safety of newer cars and trucks over older cars and trucks, and attaching real data to an otherwise assumed theory is always a good idea.

There’s an entire PDF worth of numbers to back up the claim that driving newer is driving safer, but here are some of the most powerful data points worth seeing:

  • 55 percent: Occupants fatally injured in vehicles built prior to 1984
  • 53 percent: Occupants fatally injured in vehicles built between 1985 and 1992
  • 46 percent: Occupants fatally injured in vehicles built between 1993 and 1997
  • 42 percent: Occupants fatally injured in vehicles built between 1997 and 2002
  • 36 percent: Occupants fatally injured in vehicles built between 2002 and 2007
  • 31 percent: Occupants fatally injured in vehicles built between 2008 and 2012
  • 26 percent: Occupants fatally injured in vehicles built between 2013 and 2017

Those are statistics sure to catch anyone’s attention. They were gleaned from NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System, and from an analysis of all passenger vehicle crashes that involved a fatality.

And the conclusion, as found by NHTSA, is this: “Using the most recent fatal crash data, this analysis supports previous research in finding that a higher proportion of the occupants of older MY vehicles suffered a fatal injury. In addition, the proportion of vehicle occupants who were fatally injured increases with the age of the vehicle.”

In a statement, NHTSA Deputy Administrator Heidi King added, “We encourage car buyers to select vehicles that meet their individual lifestyle, budget and transportation needs with the added assurance that they are making an investment in safety.”
