Mourinho has paid the price for overseeing a woeful season at Old Trafford that has left United languishing in sixth place in the Premier League table. United’s 3-1 drubbing at bitter rivals Liverpool proved the final straw for executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward. **PREDICT FIVE RESULTS AND WIN £25,000 – FREE TO PLAY HERE** Express Sport understands Woodward held long talks with co-owner Joel Glazer, who is based in Florida, last night. It was then that he decided to pull the plug on Mourinho’s controversial reign at Old Trafford. In a terse statement, United said: “Manchester United has announced that Jose Mourinho has left the club. Man Utd have confirmed Jose Mourinho has left the club “We would like to thank him for his work during his time at Manchester United and wish him success in the future.” Mourinho was paid £15m-a-season and has ploughed his way through more than £300m on big name signings in the last 24 months, but been unable to mastermind a significant title challenge. Woodward gave him the funds to sign the likes of Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku, but the duo have made little impact – with United getting worse instead of better. It is understood Mourinho’s treatment of Pogba, who cost United £90m when he rejoined them from Juventus in 2016, was one of the main reasons Woodward has decided to act. Pogba has found himself axed from the team in recent weeks and was an unused substitute for last weekend’s defeat at Anfield. Jose Mourinho has left Man Utd (Image: GETTY) Jose Mourinho SACKED: Michael Carrick will take over (Image: GETTY) United directors have been baffled as to how a World Cup winner has been deemed not good enough to get into the starting XI. Mourinho also angered Woodward when he criticised the club’s decision not to sign some of his defensive targets in the summer. Their relationship has been on a downward spiral ever since, with Mourinho appearing to act in a manner that suggested he wanted the club to sack him. Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is understood be top of United’s wish list to replace him, but it remains to be seen if the Argentine can be prised away from the London club. United legend Neville gave a passionate response to Mourinho’s sacking – calling for major change from top to bottom at Old Trafford. Jose Mourinho SACKED (Image: GETTY) Jose Mourinho sacked (Image: GETTY) And while speaking on Sky Sports, Neville appeared to hint that Mourinho would be replaced by a manager that United ‘will have to pay for, if it’s the one we think it’s going to be’. It appears the man is Pochettino. “This is a moment for the club to take stock of what they are doing and reset the structure in terms of recruitment and the decision-making at the football club and make sure what they do next is the right move,” Neville said. “It’s not about speed, it’s not about rushing and getting the first manager that’s available, it’s about making sure the next manager is the right manager. They will have to pay for him if it’s the one we think it’s going to be. “They have to make sure they put the right structure in around him. They see it as a positive that they have 65 scouts, I see it as confusion. Especially if you don’t have a definitive person with a level of control. “They’ve got to put more intelligent people in there who understand the football side of things.” Jose Mourinho (Image: GETTY) Jose Mourinho SACKED: Paul Pogba had numerous bust-ups with Jose Mourinho (Image: GETTY) United were in for Leicester’s Harry Maguire, Tottenham star Toby Alderweireld and Diego Godin of Atletico Madrid over the summer. However, Ed Woodward refused to back his manager and United ended up signing Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant instead. “The moment earlier on in the season where it was clear the board had decided not to back a couple of Jose Mourinho signings, to be honest at that point you’re finished as a manager,” Neville added on Sky Sports. “I think that, from a club point of view, they gave him a new contract last January. “In the summer, Jose wanted to sign one or two centre-backs and those were identified and the club have the ability and the right to say ‘no’ to those signings if they don’t feel it’s right but you have to understand the consequences. “Once you undermime a manager, or don’t agree with his signings, and you’re going against them, maybe for the right reasons from a club point of view, but if you’re a manager particularly of the stature of Jose Mourinho, you’re on a collision course. “What we’ve seen in the last three or four months is it play out in public. “I said on Sunday after the game against Liverpool that United had been crawling along on their hands and knees, minute after minute, hour after hour, match to match for the last few weeks and months. “It’s been unpleasant and unsavoury and you could see on the pitch it’s been impacting the players, who to be honest at this moment in time, look demorallised. Some games they look disinterested, some games they look inspired for 20 minute periods but so inconsistent. “The sacking of Jose Mourinho is a result of what happened last summer. When Jose came back for the first day of the pre-season tour and started making complaints in the media, he knew it was going to rumble on. “There had to be some control grabbed at that time. It played out all the way through the transfer window and a consequence of going against your manager never ends well.” Michael Carrick is in charge for two days but United are planning to appoint a caretaker until the end of the season. United want a man steeped in the tradition of the club and it’s understood Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be their man. Jose Mourinho could be replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (Image: GETTY) Lauren Blanc is currently the bookmakers favourite but Express Sport understand Solskjaer is a candidate for the role until the end of the season. The 45-year-old played for United between 1996-2007 and is now managing Molde in Norway. He was Manchester United reserve boss in 2008-2011 before joining Molde. Solskjaer had a spell in the Premier League as Cardiff boss but took them down to the Championship and was sacked in September of his second season. Sky Sports reporter James Cooper delivered an update on the situation this morning. “I’ve spoken to several senior sources connected at Manchester United and the one thing they’ve emphasised to me is that the next person coming in, his job is to bring back and restore the positive attitude,” Cooper told Sky Sports News. “They are not saying it’s not positive but the implication is that things have turned from bad to worse behind the scenes. “The next person, who they have targeted, who they have sorted out, who they have spoken to, I believe the deal is being done and we’ll know in the next 48 hours. “No-one is telling me if it’s British or European at the moment but they are telling me that we will enjoy working with on a journalistic basis and he’s someone who understand the values of Manchester United.” That’s according to Tony Cascarino who reckons the Portuguese is aware that his time at Old Trafford is nearly up. The Red Devils slumped to a 3-1 defeat against Liverpool yesterday afternoon. United are now 19 points behind the Merseyside heavyweights. Cascarino is adamant that the humbling loss will be the death knell for Mourinho’s stint at the Theatre of Dreams. He told The Times: “A few weeks ago I said that, on and off the pitch, Manchester United reminded me of Liverpool and their struggles in the 1990s. “I was wrong. United are in a far worse position than Liverpool were then. “There are no positives for United now. “The manager is waiting to be sacked – there is no way back for Jose Mourinho, the players look lost, the star names are sitting on the bench, the style of football is lifeless and awful to watch, and the club are dishing out new contracts to players who are not good enough.” Mourinho is the third permanent manager to take charge at United after Sir Alex Ferguson retired. David Moyes and Louis van Gaal both got the boot after similarly underwhelming tenures. Cascarino says United no longer resemble the club that Ferguson painstakingly built. He added: “Nothing about the club is even close to the Manchester United that Sir Alex Ferguson created. “Mourinho has talked about needing to build a house at United, referencing the poor structure at the club, which is all a little funny for someone who has spent two and a half years living in a hotel. “There is no love at the club, it is all negative. “Statistics are not everything but in all the big games United are behind their opponents for possession and shots. “Also a quick word on Mourinho’s excuse about Liverpool’s deflected goals. “As a professional you are told that they are not a fluke and they often happen for a reason —- that you are sitting too deep, leaving space outside the penalty area, and then you are not reacting quickly enough to close down the ball. “So the opponent has space to shoot and it deflects off all those players in the box. “There can be no more excuses: Mourinho has to go and the club needs a complete makeover.” United travel to lowly Cardiff on Saturday. Mexican judge Alejandro Rochin scored the fight in Wilder’s favour despite the feeling that Fury had down enough after rising from the canvas TWICE, including in the 12th round. And Fury wants him out of the sport and has told him to go to Specsavers. He said: “I’ve never seen a worse decision in my life. “I don’t know what fight that judge that gave it 115-111 was watching. That judge needs banning. READ MORE: JUDGES GOT IT WRONG… WHO REALLY WON? “He needs sacking or to go to Specsavers. “Stuff like that gives boxing a bad name. “I haven’t seen as bad a decision since the first Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield fight. “The world knows who the real WBC champion is. Wilder has had a gift decision in his home country. “He must be thanking his lucky stars that he still has the green and gold belt. That belt belongs to me, Tyson Fury.” Former world heavyweight king Lennox Lewis also agreed, he said: “It happened to me and I knew it was going to happen to him. Everybody could see who won.” Fury was also angered by British judge Phil Edwards for scoring the fight a draw at 113-113. The Brit’s promoter Frank Warren called the decision a “robbery” and said they will be writing to the WBC to request a rematch. The WBC will sit down in the coming weeks to discuss the matter and vote on whether to force Wilder into a rerun with Fury. The Manchester-born fighter remained unbeaten after he somehow got off the canvas in the last round after a right hand and left hook left him flat on his back. And now he wants the chance to do it again. Fury said: “Getting off the canvas is what true champions do. You can’t stop me getting up. I’m like a phoenix rising from the ashes. We want the rematch now.” Warren is keen to bring the second fight to the UK and Wilder’s co-manager Shelly Finkel is happy for his man to travel. But there is also the matter of WBA, WBO and IBF champion Anthony Joshua and Finkel is expecting a call from his promoter Eddie Hearn. He said: “Anything is a possibility. We will see if the guy (Eddie Hearn) calls us. “Maybe Joshua will think my guy is not so good and will want to fight him now.” The former Red Devils and England ace has often slammed the Special One for United’s dour performances under him at Old Trafford. Mourinho was on the brink of being sacked as Manchester United boss, only for the Red Devils to come from behind against Newcastle before the international break to save his job. It remains to be seen how long Mourinho has left at Old Trafford, with former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane tipped to replace him. And while Scholes is desperate for Mourinho to turn United’s fortunes around, the England hero says the situation might be too far gone. When asked by ESPN whether United’s stars aren’t playing for Mourinho, Scholes said: “It’s hard for me to say because I was never in a team, be it Man United or England, where I went out with the intention of getting a manager sacked. I never went out and thought ‘I’ll not try’. “I’m not saying that any Man United player has ever done that but you hear so much stuff now that you think it could be possible. “I’d hate that if it’s true, if any player set out to play badly on purpose. I’ve had loads of bad games, but never on purpose. “The big thing with United is the effort and the attitude. When you looked at the West Ham game last week, it looked like the biggest sign of players not wanting to play for Jose, but I would not sack him. “I hope the situation is retrievable. I’d like Jose to show people why he’s such a great coach because this is his biggest test in football. It’d be amazing [if he could turn it around]. Is it possible? I don’t know. “He still is [a good manager]. Well, I think he still is, but you wonder why his side keep getting outplayed. People talk about the first 10 games of this season but last year it was the same. “The reason we finished second last year was because of the goalkeeper. Good goalkeepers are not easy to find. [David] De Gea’s not been quite as good this season, not saving them all like did all last year.” Mourinho has cut a frustrated figure this season after United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward refused to back his manager in the summer transfer window. The Special One publicly revealed his desire to sign a new centre-back – despite signing Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof during his time at Old Trafford. However, Woodward wouldn’t budge. United ended up signing Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant in the summer window. And Scholes has defended United’s transfer chiefs, claiming Mourinho has spent plenty during his time at Old Trafford. When asked if he knows Mourinho, Scholes added: “Not really, only from when I’ve played against him. I loved watching his interviews, his cockiness. I thought he was brilliant, but that Jose has gone. “Now it’s just a moaning Jose, which frustrates you. He’s moaning at his players and what he hasn’t got. But look what he does have. He tells people he’s the best coach, so he should now prove that. “It’s not like he’s been given nothing [at Man United]. He’s been given fortunes to spend and he’s bought a lot of these players. He’s bought the two centre-halves who don’t look good enough. If he doesn’t think they’re good enough, then coach them and make them better.” Scholes also hit out at Mourinho for praising West Ham’s transfer business in signing Issa Diop. After United’s 3-1 defeat at West Ham, Mourinho said the Hammers’ scouts got it right, hinting that his talent-spotters weren’t up to standards. And the Red Devils hero says Mourinho was completely wrong to criticise his scouts. “I didn’t like the manager praising West Ham’s chief scout after the defeat there and congratulating him on finding Diop. It was a massive dig at his own scouts,” he said. “If you’re a scout at Man United, how can you know what type of player to look for when the manager is changing his team every week and his formation all the time? Where’s the blueprint for the player you want? It must be an impossible job.” Mourinho is coming under increasing pressure at Old Trafford after United made their worse start to a league campaign since the 1989/90 season. A run of four winless games, the most recent of which came against Valencia on Tuesday night, has seen United chiefs face calls to sack the Portuguese. And Jose Mourinho will be mindful that his job is on the line as United prepare to welcome Newcastle to town on Saturday. Ex-Red Devil Paul Ince believes Mourinho will be in “real danger” if his old side fail to get a result against the Magpies. Ince’s former England team-mate Keown agrees with his take on Mourinho’s future being in jeopardy. And he says defeat to Newcastle coupled with fans getting on his back will spell the end of his reign in Manchester. “I don’t believe he can — especially if he loses the fans,” Keown told the Daily Mail, when asked if Mourinho can survive defeat to Newcastle. “The Manchester United faithful have been incredibly patient with their team. So far, Mourinho has not lost them. “The players are playing with fear. Is it any wonder their confidence is looking brittle if their manager is ranting for 45 minutes before an important match? “That could go some way to explaining why United looked devoid of confidence against Valencia. “As a former player, I would love to pull on my boots and play for Jurgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola. “With these managers, you feel they are taking every step with their players. They nurture their players and only have their best interests at heart. “With Mourinho, it feels like the players are on their own. It is like they are always on trial. It must be a lonely road for them at United.” Zinedine Zidane and Mauricio Pochettino have already been touted as potential candidates to replace Mourinho. But United legend Ryan Giggs has urged the top brass at Old Trafford to stick with the former Chelsea gaffer. “No [he should not be sacked],” Giggs said. “They are going through a tough time but change and you will be in the same position in a year or two years. “I believe [Mourinho] should keep his job. The problem of late has been forward planning. So just take stock, it’s a tough time, but my stance hasn’t changed.” Graeme Souness, meanwhile, has backed Giggs to replace Mourinho if Ed Woodward does wield the axe. “I wouldn’t go with Zidane,” Souness said. “I don’t think they want another big one given a short space of time to get it right. “If I was having a say, I would be looking at, sounds daft, Ryan Giggs. Someone that will be given more time going forward to get it right. “It doesn’t have to be a spending splurge again. It has to be someone this time around that will be given time because of his affection and his history with the football club. “They’ve tried [Louis] Van Gaal, they’ve tried [David] Moyes, who knew his way in the Premier League. They’ve gone for arguably the biggest name in Mourinho and it’s been an unmitigated disaster just spending big money chasing it. And that’s when you make mistakes.” The post Sacked: Dealerships Owned By Former NFL Linebackers Face Legal Action appeared first on The Truth About Cars.

If Jose Mourinho leaves Manchester United… where next for the ‘Special One’? (Image: GETTY)
Tottenham’s 3-0 hammering of the Red Devils on Monday evening has fuelled further speculation as to how much time Mourinho has left at Manchester United.
One of the highest-paid managers in world football is unlikely to walk away from such a lucrative role, but Ed Woodward and co. could decide to relieve the Portuguese coach of his duties should the crisis deepen at United in the coming weeks.
Before storming out of his post-match press conference on Monday evening, the former Chelsea boss demanded respect for the three Premier League titles he has won during his two spells in England.
And despite his arrogance, Mourinho is right. Should he be sacked by United, it would not take long for the 55-year-old to walk into another top job. But it seems as though there is not many realistic positions available for the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’.
Mourinho isn’t afraid of returning to clubs he has previously worked at. After popping back to Chelsea for a second bite at the cherry, the Blues won the Premier League title for the fourth time before it all went horribly wrong for their messiah.
Madrid achieved success under Mourinho before his departure back in 2013, where the Portuguese coach claimed he had endured the ‘worst season of his career’.
Despite managing in Spain during a time when Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona were undoubtedly the best side in the world, Mourinho won the La Liga title in 2012, ending a four-year league drought for Los Blancos.
However, the manager’s time in Spain was filled with controversy.
Mourinho failed to see eye-to-eye with key stars such as Sergio Ramos, Cristiano Ronaldo and Iker Casillas, who he eventually dropped from the first-team.
But Florentino Perez remains a keen admirer of the Manchester United boss, and should Julen Lopetegui fail to achieve success in the capital this term, there may be a Bernabeu return in the offing for Mourinho.

Mourinho has tasted success in each of the four countries he has managed to date – but one top flight he has not yet had a crack at is France’s.
PSG are arguably the only French side big enough to attract Mourinho’s signature and pay his monumental wages.
And reports midway through last season suggested the outspoken coach was high on the list to replace now-former coach Unai Emery.
“The other day my son who lives in London went to Paris and not to Manchester to watch the match,” Mourinho said last year.
Asked why his son chose the French giants, the United chief said: “Because at the moment in Paris there is something special. Magic, quality, youth, it’s fantastic.”
Thomas Tuchel replaced Emery at the Parc des Princes over the summer.

One of Mourinho’s best spell of management came when he decided to coach in Serie A.
Inter Milan won every honour available to them after the former Blues boss left west London and moved to Italy back in 2008.
Mourinho picked up his second Champions League winners medal at the Serie A side but arguably left the club too soon, opting to move to Real Madrid days after beating Bayern Munich in the final.
Speaking last year, Inter chief Massimo Moratti said: “Mourinho himself regretted it even before he had made the move: a few hours later, in my office in Milan, he told me that he realised he was going to a business and not a family. Mourinho said that if he could, he would’ve remained at Inter.”
The San Siro outfit may now struggle to tempt Mourinho back to Italy unless they promise him a transfer kitty big enough to challenge the likes of Juventus and Napoli.
Luciano Spalletti is currently in charge but with the club not finishing higher than fourth in Serie A since the 2010/11 season, the need for a title-winner remains a topic of conversation with San Siro chiefs desperate to get back to their glory days.

Usually a role left until the end of a manager’s career, Mourinho could delve into international management for a reprieve of the day to day pressures of club football.
Portuguese fans would surely love the coach to return to his native country and take over the national side.
But Mourinho has admitted in the past that it is the England job he once considered taking.
“My wife told me not to take it and she was right,” he said back in 2014.
“It was the right decision. We are talking about seven years ago and I cannot wait two years for a big competition. I cannot be spending two years playing against Kazakhstan and San Marino.”
However, it seems unlikely Gareth Southgate will be replaced in the near future after the Three Lions’ World Cup run during the summer.

He couldn’t, could he?
Only a handful of players dare to play for both Barcelona and Real Madrid during their careers and only two managers have ever coached both of Spain’s biggest clubs.
Mourinho may not be the most popular man in Catalonia but he did work under Sir Bobby Robson at the Nou Camp in the 1990’s so has experience at the current La Liga champions.
As for Chelsea, Roman Abramovich clearly holds a special place in his heart for Mourinho despite sacking him twice.
Undoubtedly Chelsea’s most successful manager in history, some fans would still need persuading if the former boss was to be given a third crack of the whip in west London.
A section of supporters vented their frustration at Mourinho last season, labelling him ‘Judas’ during a clash between Chelsea and United in the FA Cup.
The Blues are flourishing under new boss Maurizio Sarri, meaning a third stint at Stamford Bridge would not be in the near future for Mourinho.
After serving just 18 months as head of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), Jutta Cordt was fired this week by Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, after an internal review discovered that the agency’s branch in the city of Bremen had violated legal and internal regulations for the approval of asylum applications. The decision was quietly announced on Friday, and Rainer Rothfuss, a geopolitical analyst and professor at Tübingen University’s Institute of Geography in Baden-Württemberg, feels the sacking was long overdue.
“It is quite late now that Horst Seehofer tries to find the responsible or the culpable person at the top of the BAMF organization,” Rothfuss said. “He should have broken up the coalition already in 2015 to protest against Angela Merkel for breaking the German laws and letting migrants flow into our country.”
In April, it was revealed that a former BAMF official at the Bremen office was under investigation on suspicion of taking bribes from at least 1,200 asylum seekers, starting in 2013. Other officials at the agency were also probed for possibly having taken part in the scheme. They include an interpreter and three lawyers. After reviewing some 1,371 asylum cases from 2013 to 2017, an internal audit allegedly found the Bremen branch responsible for violating the law in 142 instances, Der Spiegel reported. In 54 percent of the Bremen decisions there had been no admissible request. In about 40 percent of cases, the identity of the asylum seekers was not clarified, the report said.
In the wake of the scandal, BAMF launched additional probes at other locations. Meanwhile, the scandal only deepened the problem with the country’s asylum system and has threatened Angela’s Merkel fragile ruling coalition, which barely formed a government in March, after the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) cruised into the Bundestag in last year’s national elections. With some 50,000 applications backlogged, many in Germany wonder how the refugee crisis will be sorted.
“Just changing the head of the office does not solve the problem. The problem is of a structural nature. It is just the sheer number of asylum applications which overwhelm those structures,” Rothfuss explained to RT. “It is not the right decision now by Horst Seehofer just to exchange Jutta Cordt again and put a new person in charge because the basic problem remains the same.”
More than a million migrants –from predominantly Muslim countries– have entered Germany since the refugee crisis erupted in 2015, fueling strong anti-migrant sentiments and protests against Merkel’s open-door policy. A number of terrorist attacks involving refugees followed, as well the notorious sexual harassment incidents during the 2015 New Year’s Eve celebrations in Cologne and other cities.
Some 62 percent of Germans polled by Infratest dimap are in favor of turning back undocumented migrants at the border. The poll, released on Friday, also showed that some 86 percent want faster deportations of rejected asylum applicants.

Mourinho has come under criticism this week following Manchester United’s shock Champions League exit to Sevilla.
The Portuguese came out fighting at his press conference yesterday, highlighting United’s failures in European competition in recent years before he came to the club.
But Merson cannot understand why Jose Mourinho would say such a thing about his own club unless he was unhappy in his role.
The former Arsenal forward claims Mourinho may be regretting taking the United job and will be thinking he should have gone to rivals Manchester City or Paris Saint-Germain instead.
“It seems to me that he’s trying to make it a bit unrestful at the moment,” Merson said on Sky Sports.
“You look from a distance at the PSG job, you look at that now, he’s probably looked at the Man City one and he’s probably sitting there thinking ‘I think I’ve bitten off more than I can chew here and Man City are a million miles above us and I need to sort of find a way of getting out of here’.
“You don’t talk like he’s talking at the moment.
“You don’t start knocking Manchester United for what they’ve done in the last so many years.
“Them supporters surely aren’t sitting there going ‘he’s right here’. Surely they’re not saying that.
“And then he’s saying to the players they need to grow up. Everything’s about everybody else but not about him at the moment.
“I think this will end soon, I think it will end soon.”
Goldstein, who took the job on December 4, was fired on Tuesday, shortly after he issued a statement suggesting that former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was in the dark about his departure and learned the news not from the president himself, but from his tweets.
“The Secretary had every intention of remaining because of the tangible progress made on critical national security issues,” Goldstein, the fourth highest-ranking official at the State Department and Tillerson’s top aide, said in a statement.
He claimed that Tillerson “did not speak to the President this morning and is unaware of the reason.”
In a few hours, Goldstein followed his boss into retirement.
Prior to his firing, Goldstein told CNN that Tillerson learned of his termination through one of Trump’s tweets, which was shown to him by an aide. Trump later told reporters he didn’t discuss the impending ousting with Tillerson “very much,” but indicated that the decision did not come out of the blue either, saying the two had “talked about this for a long time.”
It is unclear what exactly set Trump off. While speaking about his motives, he referred to long-standing disagreements over the Iran nuclear deal, of which Tillerson was a proponent.
Exactly when the final decision was made is also up for speculation. AP reported, citing White House officials, that White House Chief of Staff John Kelly phoned Tillerson on Friday to tell him that Trump wanted him to go. Tillerson reportedly wanted to discuss it with the President in person, and cut his Africa trip short for that reason.
According to another account of the events, Kelly was not so clear about the president’s intentions when he spoke to Tillerson. The New York Times reported, citing a senior State Department official, that Kelly merely told Tillerson that he “may get a tweet” and advised him to wrap up his Africa tour.
As the chain of events unfolded, another two State Department officials, Tillerson’s chief of staff, Margaret Peterlin, and Deputy Chief of Staff Christine Ciccone both filed resignation letters, CNN reported, citing senior State Department officials. Confirming the reports that Tillerson and his staff were surprised by the sudden government reshuffle, it cited a Tillerson aide who said that “everyone is totally shocked.”
In his farewell remarks, Tillerson did not mention the reason for his departure, only stating that he received a call from the president “a little after noontime from Air Force One,” which was several hours after the tweet was posted.
Goldstein is being replaced by State Department spokesperson and former Fox News host Heather Nauert.
Nauert has fully embraced Washington’s anti-Russian narrative, courting controversy for snubbing Russian journalists during a press briefing earlier this month and unleashing a massive anti-Russian campaign on Twitter, blaming Moscow for Syria’s east Ghouta standoff, praising Oscar-winning “Icarus” for shedding light on the alleged state-sponsored doping system in Russia and commending Ukraine for taking a stand against Russian energy giant Gazprom in defiance of its contract obligations.
While the timeline surrounding Tillerson’s ousting is still disputed, some commentators linked it to the statement he made on Monday, regarding a case of former double agent Sergey Skripal, poisoned by what the UK claims is a military-grade nerve gas that originated from Russia. Tillerson said that he has “full confidence” in the UK government’s assessment that Russia is “likely” behind the attack.
Attempts to link Tillerson’s fall from grace to his criticism of Moscow, however, are inherently flawed, since his replacement, former CIA Director Mike Pompeo, is known to be particularly hard on Russia. Appointed as the CIA chief in November 2016, Pompeo has repeatedly called Russia a major threat to the US’ interests.
