Flights with stringent hand luggage rules can be highly frustrating for holidaymakers – and Ryanair in particular has made its rules even more restrictive. Strict regulations mean careful planning is required when packing cabin bags. The key is to pack as lightly as possible and to take items that will prove highly versatile. Travel expert Adam Ewart, CEO of luggage delivery business Send My Bag, has revealed one key piece of luggage you should pack.

It’s important the clothing you’re taking on holiday is both versatile and low maintenance. This is crucial if packing light.

One very useful item – especially if you’re going to a warm destination – is a sarong.

“A sarong is great for a hot day but can also be used as a changing room at the beach,” Adam told Express.co.uk.

Further uses include: “A tablecloth for a picnic, a scarf if you’re chilly, a makeshift satchel for your souvenirs, a pillow when you’re weary, a head scarf to protect you from the sun… the list goes on. Be inventive and pack multiple-use items.”

The fabric of your clothing could make all the difference when packing for a budget airline flight.

“Consider the fabric of the clothing you’re taking and factor in its quality, thickness, weight, and texture,” Adam said.

“Try and whittle your selection down where possible to clothing that is durable, light, and isn’t bulky.

“Synthetic materials are often better than cotton because they’re lighter, smaller and they dry faster.”

In a further bid to be versatile, make sure you take clothes that go with each other.

“Think carefully about the different colours of clothing you’re taking with you,” Adam advised.

“Choose options which are compatible with a number of other colours, reducing the number of clothes you will need to bring along and increasing the variety of outfits you can make. The extra 10 minutes of outfit planning is always worth it.”

The way you physically pack the items you’re taking in your bag will also make all the difference.

“Rolling your clothes (not folding!) is a great way to maximise the space in your bag,” said Adam.

“Use the same principle with your socks and underwear and then tuck them inside your shoes. These techniques will save you space in the rest of your bag.”

A very useful packing technique has been revealed by Bag company Trakkle. The method is called the ‘overnight burrito’ as it sees the traveller tightly packing enough stuff needed for one night in a nifty burrito style. 

In the video, the demonstrator successfully packs a T-shirt, underwear, a pair of socks, a charger and a toothbrush.

Flying Ryanair is a game of luck at the best of times, but a mathematician claims to have debunked a member of its cabin crew’s claim that buying two scratch cards for the price of one doubles the odds of winning.

David Robert Grimes, a doctor of physics and postdoctoral researcher at Oxford University, was traveling on the no-frills airline when he took exception to the claim that buying two scratch cards for the price of one would drastically boost a passenger’s chances of winning.

The scientist posted a picture of a notepad on Twitter with a scribbled calculation working out whether what the airline said was true.

Concluding that claim was inaccurate, Grimes scribbled “No Dice O’Leary” in reference to the airline’s chief executive, who has had a difficult year at the airline, with pilot shortages and complaints over Ryanair’s seating policy.

The airline has also come under fire in the past with accusations that it does not pass on profits from its scratch card sales to charities, as it claims.

Grimes told The Independent: “In his defence, if your chances of winning per card, p, are absolutely miniscule, then the claim that buying twice the number of cards ‘doubles your chance of winning’ is not a bad first-order approximation.

“Certainly it’s less of a mouthful than ‘increases your chance of winning by a factor of 1 + (1-p)^n’. Though the only way the claim could strictly be true is if your chances of winning are absolutely zero, or if you buy zero cards — probably not the ringing endorsement Ryanair intended.”

Grimes conceded that the airline’s slogan was “more catchy” than his calculation.

He was keen to note that calculations like the one in his tweet are “quite removed” from his usual line of work, which focuses on mathematical modelling of tumours and science writing. “It’s all a bit of fun pedantry,” he tweeted. “I was simply procrastinating on a short-flight instead of actually being productive, but as most of my work consists of cancer modelling or debunking dangerous pseudoscience in media, it was a pleasant distraction. Promathstination if you will.”

It’s not the first time experts have disputed Ryanair’s claims. Earlier this year, Oxford scientists worked out that there is more chance of winning the lottery than beating the airline’s “random” seating allocation policy.

In this case, Ryanair, and its long-suffering cabin crew, can probably stick with the more “catchy” claim.

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) – Malaysia Airlines’ outgoing chief executive Peter Bellew said on Wednesday his decision to leave the airline for Ryanair was due to a sense of responsibility to his native country.

His departure after just over a year in charge means Malaysia’s national carrier must appoint a third chief executive in three years as it continues to recover from two tragedies in 2014, when flight MH370 disappeared in mysterious circumstances and flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine.

Ryanair announced on Tuesday that Bellew, its former director of flight operations, would be rejoining the Irish airline as chief operating officer on December 1 to help address a pilot-staffing issue that has led to the cancellation of around 20,000 flights.

Bellew, an Irish national, said his return to Ryanair was due to “love for country” and that he could not turn down a request to help the struggling airline.

“It is Ireland’s greatest company. They need my help and there is a big challenge. It is a form of national service,” he said in a statement released in his personal capacity and not on behalf of Malaysia Airlines.

‘Unexpected’ departure

Malaysia Airlines said Bellew’s decision to leave for Ryanair was “unexpected”, and that its board would meet to discuss the move.

Bellew was Malaysia Airlines’ chief operating officer before taking over as chief executive in July last year, after his predecessor Christoph Mueller abruptly quit less than a year after being hired for a three-year mission to revive the firm.

malaysia airlinesREUTERS/Edgar Su Under Bellew’s leadership, Malaysia Airlines has been restructuring its fleet, while its owner, the state investment fund Khazanah Nasional Bhd, has said it plans to re-list the airline’s shares on the stock exchange in 2019.

Bellew in his statement refuted reports in Malaysian media saying that political interference had played a role in his departure.

A report by the New Straits Times, citing unnamed sources, on Tuesday had said both Bellew and Mueller’s departures were due to Khazanah’s interference in the running of the state-controlled airline.

“Khazanah, in actual fact, was micro-managing Malaysia Airlines. There were cases where Khazanah bypassed the MAB board,” a source was quoted by the paper as saying.

But Bellew said there was no interference. “They (Khazanah) have been incredibly supportive to me personally and corporately… there has been no interference”.

Khazanah in a statement called the allegations “erroneous and misleading”.

Malaysia Airlines was de-listed from the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange in 2014, and had removed around 6,000 jobs – at least a third of its workforce – at the peak of the airline’s crisis in 2015.

Under its restructuring program, the company is in talks to buy several widebody aircraft and is targeting a return to profits next year.

Bellew said Malaysia Airlines needed just 4-5% increase in monthly revenue to return to profitability and urged the airline not to change its brand.

“Much work has been done globally through the media and travel agents to rebuild our heritage…That work must continue and will yield the 5% revenue growth,” he said.
