A flat performance in a soda-themed challenge got another competitor canned on Friday’s Drag Race, leaving us with but a six-pack of queens.

Following an arousing — sorry, make that a rousing — game of Are You Smarter Than the Pit Crew?, which challenged the queens’ knowledge of Drag Race institutions like Lil’ Poundcake and the Interior Illusions Lounge, the group was presented with this week’s maxi challenge: to create and brand a soft drink, design the can, produce and star in a commercial, and write a catchy jingle. You know, totally normal things that all drag queens do in their day-to-day lives.

In a surprising turn of events, some of the night’s worst commercials came from some of the season’s supposed frontrunners. Let’s start with Tina Burner, whose “Viagra in a can” called Burnin’ Up (she will be hearing from the Jonas Brothers’ lawyers, by the way!) was a surprise flop, especially considering how consistently she’s performed until now. Watching her struggle to nail that line about Victoria’s Secret, I couldn’t help but flash back to Kahmora Hall’s iconic performance as a tree. (“I was ROOTING… for US!”)

Other missteps included Gottmik’s confusing sex juice commercial, which even she admitted made no sense; Utica Queen’s uncomfortable teat suckling, a tribute to her childhood cow Clara, the same one mentioned by that medium last week; and Olivia Lux’s overall directionless performance. Carson Kressley and Ross Mathews didn’t need to tell her to look confused — she took care of that herself.

Drag Race RecapThat said, sometimes the top performers are exactly the ones you expect, like Symone and Rosé, who ended up sharing this week’s win. Both took direction very well while filming their commercials, maintaining a natural humor throughout. Symone looking at the camera and asking “Is your blood sugar low?” was a moment in itself.

In fact, Symone probably could have been the sole winner of this week’s challenge, had it not been for Rosé’s devilishly stunning “Beast Couture” runway look (pictured here). Seriously, The CW should call her up to consult on HIM‘s makeup for the live-action Powerpuff Girls show. Symone’s foxy look was a hysterical stroke of brilliance, especially in its styling, but it just didn’t have the same wow factor as Rosé’s.

Check out the rest of this week’s runway — including Utica’s tribute to Maleficent, Kandy Muse’s lazy alien outfit, and Tina looking like a gay version of Barf from Space Balls — below:

Given the quality of her commercial and her tepid reception on the runway, Utica was a udder-ly destined for this week’s bottom two. But it was a bit of a surprise to see Tina lip syncing alongside her, especially when some queens (*cough* Kandy *cough*) appeared to have put in far less effort. Still, if ever there was a perfect battle to be rocking a giant dog suit, it was this one, set to Black Eyed Peas’ “My Humps.” The sheer ridiculousness of Tina twerking in that oversized costume sent Ru into hysterics, while Utica was stuck doing a way-too-serious interpretation in her constricting gown.

So imagine the viewers’ collective shock when Ru announced Tina’s elimination!

RuPaul’s Drag Race: Vegas Revue — Grade the Series Premiere! https://briefnews.eu/rupauls-drag-race-vegas-revue-grade-the-series-premiere/ https://briefnews.eu/rupauls-drag-race-vegas-revue-grade-the-series-premiere/#respond Sat, 22 Aug 2020 03:38:04 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/rupauls-drag-race-vegas-revue-grade-the-series-premiere/

After going nearly an entire month without airing a new episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race, VH1 quenched fans’ collective thirst on Friday with the premiere of the franchise’s latest offshoot — and there was plenty to drink in.

The first hour of RuPaul’s Drag Race: Vegas Revue picked up two weeks before the official opening of RuPaul’s Drag Race Live!, a Las Vegas revue starring six of the competition series’ most iconic queens: Yvie Oddly, Asia O’Hara, Derrick Barry, Kameron Michaels, Naomi Smalls and Vanessa Vanjie Mateo.

I expected much of the drama to feel completely contrived — and like all reality shows, some of it definitely was — but it was frankly refreshing to get better acquainted with some of these queens outside of the werkroom. For example, I could watch an entire spinoff just about Vanjie and Silky Nutmeg Ganache (they’re neighbors?!), or Derrick and his functioning throuple. (Can we start a GoFundMe to buy them a slightly bigger bed? I got claustrophobic just watching all three of ’em squeeze into that thing.)

We also got an update on Yvie’s battle with Ehlers–Danlos syndrome, a condition that prevents her from producing or retaining a lot of collagen. As a result, her joints are in a state of rapid deterioration, which means being a stunt queen is probably one of the worst things she can do for her overall health. It’s a story we first learned when Yvie won Drag Race Season 11, but it’s one worth following. Hearing her speak with Ru about avoiding seeing a doctor was heartbreaking.

Most of the premiere’s drama came from Naomi’s lingering feud with fellow Season 8 queen Derrick, both of whom took every opportunity to add more fuel to the fire. Naomi began by mocking Derrick — albeit behind her back — for using her Britney Spears aesthetic to avoid actually having to develop a unique persona of her own. Even when Yvie casually complimented Derrick’s work ethic and willingness to try anything, Naomi couldn’t resist adding, “It’s so hokey.”

Their tension reached a boil during a get-together at Derrick’s house, when one third of her throuple — Nick San Pedro, better known as Alaska’s drag daughter Nebraska — read each other to filth. Derrick started by calling out Naomi for saying you’d have to be “braindead” to be a Derrick fan, then Nebraska followed by making fun of Naomi’s performance in the Snatch Game. (Kind of weird to bring up a random challenge from six years ago, but OK.) Naomi then shut it down by informing Nebraska that being 6′ 5″ doesn’t make her fierce.

The premiere ended with Nebraska crashing another of the queens’ post-rehearsal outings, so we’ll have to wait and see how things play out between her and Naomi. (I’m thinking… not great.)

Hit PLAY on the trailer below for a taste of what else you can expect this season. Then, grade the premiere in our polls and drop a comment with your review.

RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 5 Finale: Who Will Win? And Who Should Win? https://briefnews.eu/rupauls-drag-race-all-stars-5-finale-who-will-win-and-who-should-win/ https://briefnews.eu/rupauls-drag-race-all-stars-5-finale-who-will-win-and-who-should-win/#respond Sun, 19 Jul 2020 09:24:05 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/rupauls-drag-race-all-stars-5-finale-who-will-win-and-who-should-win/

First things first: With all due Ru-spect to the other seven queens who competed this season, Jujubee, Miz Cracker and Shea Coulee were always destined to battle in the All Stars 5 finale.

As for which of them deserves to be immortalized in the Drag Race Hall of Fame, however, that answer isn’t quite as clear. (Guest judge Jane Krakowski really did put it best: “I just want them all to do so well!”)

If we’re going by report cards, I suppose Cracker is the frontrunner with three wins to Shea’s two and Jujubee’s one. It’s also worth noting that neither Cracker nor Jujubee were ever up for elimination prior to the suspension of All Star rules, whereas Shea stumbled a bit and found herself on the chopping block midway through the season. Look, I’ve never been great at math, but no matter how you crunch the numbers, these three queens feel pretty even. If this was RuPaul’s Math Race, I’d call it a three-way tie. (Actually, I shouldn’t even joke about that. We must never forget the Great All Stars 4 Face Crack of 2019.)

But as Cracker pointed out while picking her lipstick last night, it isn’t necessarily fair to just go by wins. For example, I feel like Cracker entered the competition with something to prove… and that mission has been accomplished. That leaves Shea or Jujubee to snatch the crown, and while I’d be fine with either outcome, I think I’d prefer to see Jujubee’s portrait hanging in the Hall of Fame. The Season 2 queen can be hysterical, uplifting and real all in the same breath — and no one can say she hasn’t fought hard to make it to this point. For crying out loud, this is the third time she’s made it to the Top 3 of a Drag Race season. Just give her a crown already!

This is the part where we ask ourselves the difficult questions: First, which of the remaining queens is most likely to snatch the crown on Friday (VH1, 8/7c)? Personally, my bet’s on Cracker. Second, which queen should win, regardless of probability? I’m throwing my support behind #TeamJuju, but would also be pleased with a #TeamShea victory.

How do you hope next week’s finale shakes out? Weigh in via our polls below, then drop a comment with more of your thoughts.

RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 5 Premiere: Was the Right Queen Dethroned First? https://briefnews.eu/rupauls-drag-race-all-stars-5-premiere-was-the-right-queen-dethroned-first/ https://briefnews.eu/rupauls-drag-race-all-stars-5-premiere-was-the-right-queen-dethroned-first/#respond Sat, 06 Jun 2020 10:36:05 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/rupauls-drag-race-all-stars-5-premiere-was-the-right-queen-dethroned-first/ Ten sickening queens Ru-turned to the werkroom on Friday for a shot at redemption in the fifth season premiere of Drag Race All Stars.

One by one, Alexis Mateo (Season 3 and All Stars 1), Blair St. Clair (Season 10), Derrick Barry (Season 8), India Ferrah (Season 3), Jujubee (Season 2 and All Stars 1), Mariah Paris Balenciaga (Season 3), Mayhem Miller (Season 10), Miz Cracker (Season 10), Ongina (Season 1) and Shea Coulee (Season 9) sashayed through the door and laid their claim to the crown.

Relive their entrances via the clip below:

We also got our first nibble of beef this week between noted Las Vegas nemeses Derrick and India, a feud that apparently involves India referring to Derrick’s boyfriend Nebraska as a “pig in a wig.” Derrick didn’t mince words with India, telling her, “You’re two-faced, and I don’t f–k with two-faced people.”

With an assist from extra-special guest judge Ricky Martin, RuPaul kicked off the season with the return of the traditional reading challenge. (Remember when Season 12 cheated us out of this joyful experience by burying its reading/shade challenge under a glorified commercial for FabFitFun? The nerve!)

As always, the queens performed at various reading levels (Ongina flopped so hard, Jujubee noted that “the crickets aren’t even laughing”), but a few queens stood out as being exceptionally literate: Jujubee referring to Mayhem as “Mayhem Filler” and “Meh-hem Miller” was inspired, India got personal by suggesting to Derrick that it might be time to #FreeBritney, and Blair paused her jokes to give everyone at home a chance to Google who India is. I can’t exactly argue with Ru for splitting the win between Jujubee and Blair.

For the season’s first maxi challenge, the queens were tasked with performing show-stopping numbers inspired by Drag Race‘s Werq the World Tour — yet another live experience this show is advertising that, due to the state of the world, fans are unable to attend. (See also: Drag Race‘s Vegas show and Broadway’s Frozen, the latter of which has since closed.)

Alexis got the party started with a “Bam!” by treating everyone to a high-energy dance number; Shea performed a pole-dancing routine that was both sexy and athletically impressive; Mayhem capitalized off of her infamous meme, even if her poor diction made it impossible to understand what she was saying; Mariah (aka “Miss Mariah Angelou”) stunned everyone with a powerful spoken-word performance, honoring all those who have stood up for their rights; and Cracker reintroduced herself as a glamorous pickle.

Both Blair and Jujubee then gave us emotional songs with impressive live vocals; Ongina, as a member of the season that started it all, performed a salute to Drag Race set to a medley of classic RuPaul bops; Derek gave us terrible impressions of Lady Bunny, Madonna, Cher and more, all while dressed like Britney Spears (shocker!); and India slayed with an original song to remind us all that “drag is not a contact sport.”

Before revealing the judges’ decisions, however, RuPaul had something tell the queens: All Star rules have been suspended… forever! Moving forward, Ru will choose one top contestant each week, and instead of lip syncing for her legacy against one of the other All Stars, she’ll have to do it against a mystery lip sync assassin. If the All Star wins, she will choose one of the bottom two queens to eliminate. But if the assassin wins, the bottom queens’ fate will be in the hands of the other All Stars, who will also get to vote each week. I know, it’s a lot — but once you let it sink in, it’s pretty epic.

OK, time for the rulings: After sending Blair, Jujubee, Mariah and Shea to safety, Ru announced none other than India as this week’s winner! (Given how well she performed, I’m in full agreement with Ru, but I’ll be honest — I completely underestimated India. She really is more than just “that girl who got picked up by Mimi Imfurst.”) As for this week’s bottom queens, which also totally make sense, that unfortunate title was shared by Derrick and Mayhem.

Drag Race All Stars RecapDressed in a glittery floral normal, India returned to the runway, where she was greeted by the first surprise assassin: Drag Race Season 11 winner Yvie Oddly! (Something about those pants and shoes was a dead giveaway, but I was thrilled nonetheless when Yvie’s face emerged from backstage.) Facing off to the tune of Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” naturally, India once again impressed me with her versatility, energy and commitment. She brought it. Unfortunately, her competitor embodied the idea of the song in a way that only Yvie could, earning Ms. Oddly a well-deserved win. (Fun fact: The $ 10,000 tip rolls over into next week’s challenge, making the stakes even higher.)

Yvie then revealed the name on her lipstick, sending Derrick Barry packing. Do you think she was the right queen to go home first? Vote below, then drop a comment with your thoughts on the All Stars 5 premiere.

RELATED STORIES

Draped in his finest Phantom of the Opera eleganza, RuPaul crowned the first-ever virtual Drag Race winner on Friday.

After welcoming all 12 non-disqualified queens to the “stage,” the 90-minute event began with a montage of messages from the show’s celebrity pals, all grateful to Drag Race for giving them an escape during these trying times. “Being in quarantine was nuts, and it really helped to watch a lot of nuts,” Adam Lambert said. Other familiar faces included Whoopi Goldberg to Rachel Bloom, the latter of whom had this to say: “Ru, thank you for this excuse to get dolled up for the first time since giving birth about six weeks ago — and for the excuse to show off my pornographically large breasts, which are filled with milk.” (This feels like a good time to remind everyone about the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend song “Heavy Boobs.” Click here to enjoy it, and have fun down that YouTube rabbit hole!)

Next came a series of one-on-one interviews between Ru and this season’s final three queens: Crystal Methyd (in Springfield, Mo.), Gigi Goode (in Los Angeles, Calif.) and Jaida Essence Hall (in Milwaukee, Wis.), giving each of them one last chance to reflect on their experiences throughout the competition. We also got to spend some quality time with their family members, including Jaida’s hot brother and Crystal’s glamorous mom…’s boobs. (“She’s always got those girls out. I mean, she paid good money for ’em!”)

Drag Race Season 12 FinaleThis was followed by an emotional tribute to Jacqueline Wilson, a legendary Drag Race co-executive producer who passed away in late 2019. Countless queens from seasons past — including Monet X Change, Vanessa Vanjie Mateo, Peppermint, Sasha Velour, Bob the Drag Queen, Scarlet O’Hara, Latrice Royale, Adore Delano and Alyssa Edwards — poured their hearts out, sharing fond memories of their experience working with the Emmy Award-winning producer.

Then came the first lip sync of the night: a three-way battle to the tune of RuPaul’s “Bring Back My Girls,” with only the queens’ faces at their disposal. And all three queens indeed gave good face, to the point where I really couldn’t possibly choose a winner. Were I forced to pick, I might give it to Jaida, if only because she exhibited better spacial awareness than her competitors.

The second round of lip syncs, however, was another matter. Crystal was the clear winner there, spinning a full mother-child narrative by way of Nelly Furtado’s “I’m Like a Bird.” The makeup was impeccable, the puppetry was amazing, and I honestly don’t think anything during quarantine has made me laugh as hard. Guys, we watched Crystal regurgitate food into her own mouth. That alone should have earned her the crown. Just watch:

That said, Gigi and Jaida also turned it out when it came their time to shine. Gigi transported us into a black-and-white wonderland, recreating A-ha’s iconic “Take On Me” video with moves and looks to spare (click here to watch!), while Jaida turned her living room into her own personal club, dancing the frack out of Ciara and Chamillionaire’s “Get Up.” (Click here to watch!)

Even after drinking in all three performances, RuPaul still needed to see more. Rather than eliminating one of the finalists, Ru announced that all three would proceed to the final lip sync, a “cross-country battle royale” set to Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor.” Gasp!

But first, it was time to hand out a slightly smaller (but no less dignified!) crown. Nina West made a special appearance — along with Dolly Parton, who may or may not just be Leslie Jordan in a wig — to crown this season’s Miss Congeniality… Heidi N Closet! (Anyone surprised? No? Cool.)

Drag Race Season 12 FinaleThen. It. Was. Time. A toilet-scrubbing Yvie Oddly crashed the party to cue up the final lip sync battle of Season 12, the one that would ultimately determine whether Crystal, Gigi or Jaida would walk away — er, stay at home — a winner. As Ru explained, each of the three finalists were sent the same stage dressing and technical equipment to level the playing field.

And what a battle it was. Gigi got things started immediately with an air violin intro, then got jaws dropping with a mid-performance costume change, fully transforming into Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. She even managed to seamlessly swap out her boots for a pair of ruby slippers. Honestly, I feel like there was some witchcraft afoot. Jaida also gave us a Ru-veal, ditching her big cape for a sexy bodysuit midway through the battle. She was easily the most physical of the three performers, pulling out every trick in the book for a truly show-stopping display. As for Crystal, I feel like she was (and I hate to use this phrase) a little out of her league. Sure, she won her last lip sync face-off, but that was against Jackie Cox, not this savage twosome. I maintain that Crystal gave us the best solo lip sync, but after this three-way melee, I didn’t have high hopes for her victory.

And the winner is… Jaida Essence Hall! Did you see that coming? Vote in our polls below, then drop a comment with your thoughts on tonight’s results.

RuPaul’s Drag Race: Gigi Goode Is the Favorite to Win Season 12 — Which Queens Will Join Her in the Top 4? https://briefnews.eu/rupauls-drag-race-gigi-goode-is-the-favorite-to-win-season-12-which-queens-will-join-her-in-the-top-4/ https://briefnews.eu/rupauls-drag-race-gigi-goode-is-the-favorite-to-win-season-12-which-queens-will-join-her-in-the-top-4/#respond Sat, 11 Apr 2020 22:37:51 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/rupauls-drag-race-gigi-goode-is-the-favorite-to-win-season-12-which-queens-will-join-her-in-the-top-4/

Mandated quarantining may prevent RuPaul’s Drag Race from giving us a traditional live finale for Season 12, but however the results are announced, it’s become fairly clear which queen will get the crown.

Facts are facts, America — Gigi Goode is the obvious frontrunner. Let’s start by crunching the numbers: The Los Angeles-based queen has won three out of six challenges, more than any other contestant this season. And even when she didn’t win, she was almost always counted among the tops of the week.

It’s also important to look at which challenges Gigi has won. She slayed the Ball Ball with a collection of fierce, mom-approved fashions; she acted the hell out of Snatch Game, maintaining full robot realness without sacrificing the jokes; and she totally Marcia’d Jan by crushing the Madonna Rusical with moves and looks to spare. At just 21 years old, she may be the youngest queen in the competition, but she’s also proven herself to be the most versatile.

Now that we’ve established Gigi as the likely winner of Season 12, let’s have a little fun and predict the rest of the (meant for more) Top 4, shall we? I’ll start by addressing the disqualified elephant in the room: Sherry Pie would absolutely be in the Top 4 were it not for, you know, that thing we’re reminded of at the beginning of every single episode. Most of her contributions have been edited out, but Sherry has won two challenges and has never had to lip sync for her life.

Jaida Essence Hall also holds the distinction of being one of the only queens yet to land in the bottom, making her an obvious contender. I also feel that the judges have been overlooking Widow Von’Du’s contributions, and I’d love to see her land in the Top 4. Based on what we’ve seen so far, Jackie is a decent candidate for that fourth spot, though it’s also possible that either Crystal Methyd or Jan could edge her out. I don’t see Heidi N. Closet making the Top 4, but given the audience’s response to her, I have to imagine that she’ll be named this season’s Miss Congeniality.

To refresh your memory, here’s a list of every queen still eligible for inclusion in the Top 4: Crystal, Gigi, Heidi, Jackie, Jaida, Jan and Widow. (Also, any theories shared here have not been influenced by spoilers, which I know are plentiful on these here internets. I remain un-spoiled. Fresh, even.)

Do you agree that Gigi is the queen to beat in Season 12? Use our poll below to assemble your Top 4, then drop a comments with more of your predictions below.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Recap: Season 12’s First Elimination Poses a ‘Problem’ https://briefnews.eu/rupauls-drag-race-recap-season-12s-first-elimination-poses-a-problem/ https://briefnews.eu/rupauls-drag-race-recap-season-12s-first-elimination-poses-a-problem/#respond Sat, 14 Mar 2020 07:26:19 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/rupauls-drag-race-recap-season-12s-first-elimination-poses-a-problem/

The dirty (baker’s) dozen competing in Season 12 of RuPaul’s Drag Race finally shared the screen on Friday, and regardless of who actually won or lost, we can all agree on one thing: This was the night that America fell in love with Heidi N. Closet.

The Powers That Be may hate her drag name — Ru even took the time to explain how difficult it is to pronounce — but anytime Heidi got a spotlight, be it on the runway or on the set of a fake reality show, the judges couldn’t stop singing her praises. I’m not necessarily predicting that she’ll land in the Top 3 (or 4?), but Heidi serves as an important reminder that you shouldn’t judge a closet by its door.

OK, on to the episode. In what may have been the shadiest mini challenge in Drag Race herstory, Ru asked Widow Von’Du and Jaida Essence Hall to rank their fellow queens based on first impressions. For the record, here’s who they each consider their strongest (and weakest) competition…

Widow: Sherry Pie, Jan, Dahlia Sin, Rock M. Sakura, Aiden Zhane
Jaida: Gigi Goode, Brita, Nicky Doll, Jackie Cox, Crystal Methyd, Heidi

But Aiden and Heidi ended up getting the last laugh, as Ru revealed that they would join Widow and Heidi as captains for this week’s four-team maxi challenge. (Thus began the Week of Heidi!)

And the shade continued as the captains assembled their teams: Aiden recruited Sherry and Brita, Heidi enlisted Jackie and Gigi, Widow picked Nicky and Crystal, and Jaida selected Jan and Dahlia. There was already something about Rock that made me want to reach through my TV and give her a hug, so that feeling only intensified when none of the queens chose her to join their team; she ended up tagging along with Jaida.

This week’s maxi challenge was to write and act out an audition for World’s Worst, a reality show for “wannabe performers with big dreams, outrageous backstories and no talent whatsoever.” It actually turned out to be a really fun American Idol spoof, though I feel like the name was more of a nod to Ru’s short-lived CBS competition show World’s Best. (For the record, if the World’s Best judges panel had consisted of Ross Mathews, Charo and freaking Ornacia, CBS definitely would have renewed it for a second season.)

And on the runway, a buttons-and-bows theme inspired a surprising variety of eccentric looks, from Heidi’s “delightful” Pinocchi-ho getup to Nicky’s oversized hair button. But it was Sherry who emerged the winner of this week’s challenge, due to… reasons. (I don’t think we really need to elaborate on her victory, do you?)

Despite the aforementioned hair button, which the judges appreciated, Nicky found herself lip syncing against Dahlia — whose impressive runway look apparently wasn’t enough to redeem her low-energy performance in the challenge — to the tune of Ariana Grande’s “Problem.” Frankly, neither contestant seemed particularly engaged in the battle. If I had been in Ru’s wig, I would have sent them both home, especially after allowing two weeks to go by with nary an elimination.

But I’m not in Ru’s wig. She is. And she chose to send home Dahlia Sin.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Recap: Which Queen Disappeared Like Magic? https://briefnews.eu/rupauls-drag-race-recap-which-queen-disappeared-like-magic/ https://briefnews.eu/rupauls-drag-race-recap-which-queen-disappeared-like-magic/#respond Fri, 03 May 2019 06:50:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rupauls-drag-race-recap-which-queen-disappeared-like-magic/

RuPaul’s Drag Race has always been a magical experience, but that took on a whole new meaning on Thursday’s episode, which ended with the ultimate vanishing act.

The mini challenges in Season 11 have been all over the place — I still cringe thinking about the queens’ inability to read one another — so I really appreciated this week’s sillier competition, which paired each contestant with a Pit Crew member for a little relay race. And while Vanessa Vanjie Mateo technically won by getting the most balls into the basket, I’m pretty sure everyone considers themselves winners after spending so much time attached at the hip (or other appendages) to the show’s beloved Pit Crew.

As the mini challenge winner, Vanjie had the honor — or the burden, depending on your perspective — of splitting the queens into two ludicrously uneven teams for a magic-themed maxi challenge. Vanjie enlisted A’Keria C. Davenport, Silky Nutmeg Ganache and Yvie Oddly for her crew (aka “Team Personality”), leaving Nina West, Brooke Lynn Hytes and Shuga Cain to fend for themselves. Mama Ru tried to stir the pot by asking Brooke Lynn if she was offended that Vanjie didn’t pick her, despite their relationship, but Brooke Lynn appeared unbothered by the turn of events. (“She didn’t want our romantic connection getting in the way of our work.”)

Of course, given how things worked out, I’ll bet Vanjie wishes she had recruited Brooke Lynn, whose team put together a funny, entertaining and professional magic show — even if I not-so-secretly wanted them to dress up like the Sanderson Sisters from Hocus Pocus. Brooke Lynn’s team may not have included the same outlandish personalities as Vanjie’s, but the ability to follow a script and remain cohesive goes a long way in this competition. (I’m also going to be laughing about “Girl, where is Nina? Football practice?” for the next few days.)

Meanwhile, Vanjie’s team was kind of a mess, and no amount of screaming “Da Black Magic!” could detract from that. Yes, I appreciated that A’Keria was able to deep throat that balloon — one of the more perplexing tricks of the evening — but the rest of the teammates, including Yvie, just kind of fell flat for me. Then again, considering Silky fell asleep during rehearsal, I probably shouldn’t be surprised.

Fortunately, some of those less-impressive performers were able to Ru-deem themselves on this week’s caftan-themed runway — especially Yvie, who served us double-jointed “enlightened monk realness.” But no one looked more at home in her caftan than Nina, who earned a well-deserved second win thanks to her impressive performance in the magic show. (I love that Michelle Visage compared Nina’s performance to a Saturday Night Live sketch, since Nina revealed Chris Farley to be her inspiration for the challenge.)

Shuga and Vanjie ending up in the bottom two couldn’t have been less of a surprise. In fact, given their performances up to this point — which have ranged from forgettable to regrettable — I’m a little surprised that either one of them is still in the game. Frankly, I would have gotten rid of both of them after their uninspired lip-syncs to Mary J. Blige’s “No More Drama.” The only thing Vanjie did to (slightly) edge Shuga out was to angrily remove her jewelry as the song went on, though I might not have even noticed if Yvie hadn’t mentioned that in her confessional.

In the end, though, it was Shuga Cain whom Ru sent sashaying away. Your thoughts on her elimination? Drop ’em in a comment below.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Recap: Which Girl Wasn’t Quite Golden Enough? https://briefnews.eu/rupauls-drag-race-recap-which-girl-wasnt-quite-golden-enough/ https://briefnews.eu/rupauls-drag-race-recap-which-girl-wasnt-quite-golden-enough/#respond Fri, 05 Apr 2019 08:36:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rupauls-drag-race-recap-which-girl-wasnt-quite-golden-enough/ After watching Thursday’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race, I kind of feel like all Olympic athletes should be required to compete in high heels. With 10 queens left in the game, this week’s installment featured the franchise’s first-ever Drag-lympics — and not everyone involved was a good sport about it.

But before the ladies could go for the gold, they had to warm up via this week’s mini challenge, a “gal-isthenics” class led by Ru’s pal Love Connie. The dual win went to A’Keria C. Davenport and Plastique Tiara, the latter of whom really impressed me with her floor work. Most of this season’s contestants have been underestimating Plastique as a mere look queen, so I’m always excited when she steps it up and proves them wrong. (Those back-to-back death drops!) That said, I think we should also give a little credit to Yvie Oddly, who did… well… this:

With their limbs properly loosened, A’Keria and Plastique were named the leaders of competing countries — Tuckpantistan and The People’s Republic of Glamazonia, naturally — and got to select team members for this week’s maxi challenge: the Drag-lympics. Proving she knows exactly how to play this game, A’Keria loaded up her team with heavy hitters like Brooke Lynn Hytes, Silky Nutmeg Ganache, Yvie and Shuga Cain. Meanwhile, Plastique’s team consisted of Ra’Jah O’Hara, Miss Vanjie, Nina West… and poor Scarlet Envy, who wasn’t technically picked by anyone. (This actually became a recurring theme throughout the episode, which I didn’t expect.)

Let’s start with that second group, whose members were instantly aware of how much trouble they were in — or as Vanjie put it, “We are f–ed!” From the minute Scarlet was added to the team, Nina worried about her two left feet, which only added to Scarlet’s feelings of inadequacy. (“It’s a hard place to start from,” she admitted.) As for A’Keria’s team, everyone managed to turn it out, though poor Yvie struggled to put her body through some of the more complicated choreography. Hearing about her journey with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome was absolutely heartbreaking, especially as she looked towards a future where this type of drag might not be an option anymore.

Then came this week’s runway, “All That Glitters,” which included an impressive variety of gold-based looks: A’Keria could have passed as Ru’s body double, Brooke Lynn gave us pure Norma Desmond, Yvie kept it comedic as an old lady with a golden cane and Plastique revealed her personal “mega evolution.” Her team’s victory, combined with her stunning runway look, earned A’Keria this week’s well-deserved win.

And while Vanjie’s basic Playboy Bunny-inspired ensemble nearly landed her in the bottom two, Ru let her off with a warning this time. Instead, Scarlet — who had to stand there and listen as her fellow teammates voted her off the damn runway — battled against Ra’Jah to the tune of Donna Summer’s “Last Dance.” Admitting that she’s no dancer, Scarlet opted to pull out every last trick in her bag, from an unexpected reveal of pants to a well-timed golden glitter bomb. And those synchronized death drops! Honestly, both ladies killed it… but in the end, Scarlet was told to sashay away.
